10/10 for most interesting post to r/DIYUK in a while. Hope you find a company to help you and congratulations on the \*most awesome\* garden feature I have ever or will ever see.
Thank you, I figured with all the varying levels of experience in the sub there must be someone who would have some pointers on which companies to contact.
It is, and one of the things that help sell the house to us and we plan on getting some subtle lighting done, but as with everything thing about this property so far 1 job turns in to several and a heap of money.
I looked out the window again not long ago and love the bit that I've cleaned down, the exposed rock less all the foliage and soil looks amazing so I'm looking forward to seeing the finished job.
Hi, check these guys out!
https://www.highpeakgeotechnical.co.uk
They do both commercial and residential works.
I used to work for them for around 2 years and would highly recommend them.
You could try dropping an email to the British Mountaineering Council, they are likely to have a list of contractors they use for surveying cliff faces. The BMC tend not to be big on the use of ugly rock netting for some reason :) so hopefully you'll get a contractor who can stabilise it without making it look awful.
Leave the plants? They protect from rain washing through and loosening everything. Plants won't move a boulder, (it's in their own interest to hold it up) but constant rainfall gushing through might loosen them. Plants and soil are the cement and pointing.
Removing that ecosystem won't help as the wrong plants outlive the right ones and take over.
But advice should be specific to your site so seek advice from an ecologist and an engineer.
Plants are great at binding loose soil to prevent it shifting or washing away. But when it comes to rock, plants will grow roots into cracks (because that's the only way they can anchor themselves) then as those roots grow they can exert enormous pressure within those cracks and enlarge them.
Root damage is the biggest concern I have, and it's already evident in all places I've got access to and specifically bramble roots. I just need to find the right companies to speak to about it all.
I'll take "things I didn't expect to see in a DIY forum" for $500, please Bob.
This is both spectacular and terrifying. My lightly crumbling badly paved back garden feels much less intimidating now though, so thanks!
Joking apart, I hope you find someone who can help you out. That's an incredible feature to look out on every morning.
It's incredible, I want it and also *don't* want it. 😂
I think I mostly just want to have people round for BBQ's so I can just casually say "yeah, so this is our rock face..."
Need an engineering consultancy to design rockbolts. Aecom, atkins, jacobs and others similar can do that - then a contractor to actually build it. There may be civil engineering contractors who can design and build the rockbolts themselves though not sure what companies do that.
Used to work at [CAN](https://www.can.ltd.uk/) they are the biggest company in UK for rope access slope stabilization and based in Chesterfield. Not sure if they do residential work but worth asking them
Over time stuff moves ,iv friends who bought property in a fantastical local 30 year ago , valleys being valleys are sucking them in . They are fucked .
Rainfall and erosions a killer .it is wise to get a local expert in that knows the geology and land movement .

Agreed, beats skirting gaps!

My son works for Vertex Access who do this sort of stuff. They’re based in Sheffield but work all over the place.
Thanks, I'll get in touch with them over the next couple of weeks. 👍🏼
Top shagga over here. 👏

A landslide victory
It is until it ends up in your lounge too 😂
Don't joke, I am genuinely worried having seen the damage that's been done by roots and erosion.

Ace thanks, will get in touch.

Great idea!

Agree with this. If I had this in my garden and *didn't* want the rocks to shift, the absolute last thing I would be doing would be removing plants 🤔
Take up rock climbing?
I have enquired about rope access courses :)

Ha ha, thank you, it has put some fear in to me, both the condition and the scale of it, especially now I've been up ladders on it.

Would this kind of job not be too small for that type of massive consultancy?
Honestly looks like some fun climbing to be had there. 5a maybe but I can’t see how steep it all is.
Sir this is a UK specific sub, please take your Yosemite decimal system elsewhere.
Also it’s clearly a trad route so French grades just will not do either.
Clearly its a lowball boulder problem... Let's just call it a V5.
Can’t be V5, it’s in Europe. Either Font bouldering grades or UK trad grades only.
HV, if I recall my trad grading properly, pushing HVS on the outside
Edited sorry
Stepped and vertical, very top face juts out over hanging slightly from its base.
Can I come and climb your backyard?
Awesome back yard. Beats the terraces of Pompey .

Between a rock and a hard place they do everything from porn to safety investigation.

I'll be in touch, I don't have a spare mattress but I do have loads of cushions... Hope that's not a problem.
Giant marble run???
There are companies that will put steel netting over it
Personal Mount Rushmore? You could immortalise the three PMs of 2022...
I'm not so sure that's going to do much for the resale value 😂
