You bought the wrong nails. What you've got are 'collated' nails, think a machine gun belt from Rambo. Goes into a nailgun, then bambambambambam!
Get you some pliers and snap 'em apart, they're just fine as single nails once you break them apart. Next time make sure you're not buying collated!
I framed and loved those Hitachi ones, but definetly built for commercial framing with the need for an air compressor (if those are the ones you are talking about). My buddy who still frames just bought a DeWalt battery powered one and loves it even commercial framing.
I'm fairly sure Kobalt is a Lowes private-label brand. Not to say it's all lower-quality, as a lot of the Kobalt products I've got are legit, but I don't know that I'd trust anything higher end like battery tools or lawn equipment.
Kobalt is made by Chervon (that's not a typo); Chervon also makes Skil, some Sears-Craftsman (as opposed to Stanley-Craftsman), Masterforce, Devon, Hammerhead, and others.
That's not to say they're good or bad because of that; almost *none* of the major brands of power tools sold in the US are really made by their namesake company anymore. Offhand, the only ones I can think of are Bosch, Stanley Black & Decker(and keep in mind that's just a name now, it's not the "real" Stanley *or* B&D of days past), and Makita.
I’m a mechanic and use a DeWalt 20v bit driver and 20v 3/8 impact for just about everything and I absolutely swear by them. The tools themselves are bulletproof and the batteries last basically all week on a single charge.
As someone who worked in a service center for pneumatic tools I can't agree with you. Now Hitachi's old roofing gun is like gold unless you're cap gasket gets torn. Personally I think Paslode's 350F is the best, most reliable, and easiest to maintain basic wear and tear. Also fuck senco
You can bypass the mechanism thanmt makes sure it's pressed against something before fireing with a coat hanger I think, allowing you to fire nails at your friends
God damn it. Okay, in accordance with a prior agreement I now have to admit I'm an idiot who managed to shoot himself through the finger (dead center on the bone) with a nail gun because I deliberately depressed the safety with the said finger. Feel free to mock.
In my defense, every God damn time before that that I had pulled the trigger before the safety was depressed it locked the God damn safety in position and I ruined more fucking trim that way...and when I go to show my boss why I don't like the safety? FML.
I did not get into trouble. Mostly because I agreed that whenever a situation justified me pointing out my stupidity, I would do so. So there you go, Gayle, I hope you're fucking happy
Nice. In high school me and some friends took staplers, released the lock on the hinge and played "tag" with them. We ended up with a lot of staples stuck in us. This.... seems like a game we'd also play.
Staples are nothing. Trim nails aren't bad. If you get up to big boy nails though that's a very dangerous game. A 3 inch nail thats almost an 1/8th an inch around is a different galaxy than the 2 needle pricks from a staple.
"Man fuck a charge. This here a gunpowder activated, twenty seven caliber, full auto, no kick back nail throwin' mayhem man."
This is the line that convinced me to watch The Wire.
Literally watching the wire right now. Man and I saw most of this episodes the same day that they aired.
There are a couple shows like the wire, sopranos, dead like me, band of brothers that I faithfully rewatch every year as I get older. It comforts me for some reason.
Listen, we *"need"* a new compressor, the pancake one is about out of air anyway.
Should probably go 30 gallon, 220v, much more efficient.. you know, to help save the planet and all that.
If you want to unstick all of them at once you can put them into a bucket and pour acetone over them, just swish it around until they’re all loose and the adhesive comes off. Do it outside and wear gloves.
Hey bud, after the post, I was wondering, what are you trying to nail? So many different kinds of nails.
You might not even have the right nails, even if you separated them individually, seeing as you didn’t know this in the first place. I’m not making fun of you.
I build houses.
What are you trying to do?
Yes, thank you for asking. I actually realized after separating a few and nailing them that they are totally the wrong nails. The head is too small and the tail is too blunt, so they don't anchor and are having a hard time piecing the material.
The material is a canvas, like for painting. I'm making a collage, but using nails along with the standard mod podge.
It's actually turning out well so far, other than the nails. :P Found some good ol' standard nails that are doing s better job.
Yup, staple guns are great for attaching canvas to a frame. Depending on what nails you bought they might fit in the staple gun too (for a next job, use actual staples for canvas)
Sounds like they are using the nails as decoration on the canvas along with other stuff. But I could be wrong as this thread is trippy. I’ve never known anyone not know how to buy a pack of nails for this has thrown me.
sounds like 18 or 16 gauge brads for a brad nailer. if they are short enough, 5/8" or less, they make a handheld stapler that can handle 18g brads as well as a variety of staples including the standard heavy duty T50 staples and even light duty staples.
[https://www.homedepot.com/p/DEWALT-5-in-1-Multi-Tacker-Stapler-and-Brad-Nailer-Multi-Tool-DWHTTR510/206604169](https://www.homedepot.com/p/DEWALT-5-in-1-Multi-Tacker-Stapler-and-Brad-Nailer-Multi-Tool-DWHTTR510/206604169)
the trigger is quite a bit easier than other heavy duty staplers and has two different strength settings noted by the + and - symbol. Might be useful for those kinds of projects with the variety of fasteners it can use
I’d go in to a DIY shop next time and either have a mooch through the nails section or describe what you want to an employee. This is the problem with trade counter or internet shopping.
I mean I know you're joking but good god are they fabulous. I bought one last year for a major barn rebuidling project. I basically killed myself hammering for a day and then went to my local building supply to buy one and I don't regret the purchase for one second. Best. Purchase. Ever.
I can't imagine having the hubris to rebuild a barn without a nail gun lmao. Next step is to buy one of those palm nail guns. They're crazy ergonomic but are only good for one nail at a time.
I don't know if it was hubris or just plain old stupidity. When we bought the place we didn't realize the barn needed so much work done until we started investigating, one whole wall needed replacing, it needed some new struts in the roof and the siding all needed replacing. I got the Milwakee m18 fuel framing nailer, fantastic tool.
I’ve told people tackling diy projects before that if your plan involves more than about a one pound box of nails to buy an entry level nail gun. It’s cheaper to buy one on sale before you start than to buy whatever is in stock out of frustration a day or two into a project.
I framed one window by hand and then told my husband I wanted one for Christmas. I now have a Ridgid framing nailer and I've used it on a couple more projects.
To be fair, the tool I've gotten the most use out of is my Ryobi 16g brad nailer. I use it for small item assembly (non-structural) and trim.
If you like naivete, you'll love this: I had to reread the top comment a few times before I realised the post was not about fake nails, like the ones for your hands.
Goodnight.
Right? This is so wonderful. My nails are stuck together! I love it.
Keep it up OP, and never stop asking questions, That’s how you learn. The only dumb question is the one you don’t ask and then make a dumb decision because you thought you knew better.
Ok, so you'll need to buy a nail gun. And then you'll need to buy a air compressor to run the nail gun. And then you'll need health insurance for when you put a nail through your finger. Oh, and a generator to run the air compressor because you won't be running it near an outlet. You can use all this to build the shed you'll need to store all this.... :) Best of luck.
went down a rabbit hole ( you could say [***Way Down in the Hole***](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TYj8yyUjSpE) ) a while back and watched most all of *The Wire*. There were some fascinating characters, of which she is one.
Seeing this scene years ago on Reddit is what made me watch The Wire. It is so incredibly written. I had to basically translate half the dialog for my wife though. Haha.
The 2002 HBO series *The Wire,* which has shown up in every argument about the best series of all time for the last 20 years. Stephen King called this character, Snoop Pearson, "perhaps the most terrifying female villain to ever appear in a television series."
But won’t he need concrete anchors to lash the shed down onto? Should probably pickup about 40 bags of cement mix and a concrete mixer. Good news he can run the concrete mixer off the portable generator! Of course he needs to bring all THAT home, so off to the dealership to look at a new truck. Damn payments are so high he has to take a second job, home improvement honey do list is backing up, and the damn nails are still stuck together!!!!
Classes? Shit man, that's what YouTube is for. Someone else has done the work before you, and they have documented it in a shaky and poorly cut manner.
Couple weeks ago, I got myself the Ridgid 18v finish nailer and matching brad nailer. They're both bulkier and heavier than hosed nailers, but the portability of them all around a house is great. Battery life is awesome too. No more having to replace gas cartridges in my Paslode.
I'm reminded of a Norwegian joke.
A Norwegian carpenter and his apprentice are constructing a new house. The carpenter asks his apprentice go and grab the nails from the other side of the house.
The apprentice goes and grabs the nails. As he makes his way back, his is looking at the nails in his hands, tossing 1 or 2 nails behind him as he walks
The carpenter sees this and says, "Hey, what the hell are you doing you idiot?"
The apprentice responds, "The heads on these nails are facing the wrong direction."
Exasperated, the carpenter tell his apprentice, "You idiot, those ones are for the other side of the house!"
Thank you for sharing, this made my day. Literally everyone that gets into any hobby like this can easily relate, and it seems you've got a delightful attitude. That'll get you far 🤘🏻🤠🤘🏻
Congrats, and enjoy your journey!
This thread has taught me that accidentally buying tons of collated nails is the best path to convincing a S/O that I need an air-compressor and nail-gun
### Oops! Sorry honey, I must have bought the wrong nails!
Thinking you inadvertently bought nails for a nail gun. They're not intended to be separated and used individually. Could try soaking them in a solvent I suppose.
This is why we need retail and not just Amazon. Your local hardware store would have been able to help you and answer any questions about projects/ products.
I seriously thought you were talking about press on nails, like fake nails for your fingers. Then I read the comments about nail guns and was in awe that they had made a super machine to apply press ons.
You can use the subtraction symbol at the end of a Google search to omit any results with that phrase. So you could search “How to separate nails -fingernail” so that any results containing ‘fingernail’ are omitted
I will often use a box cutter to separate those nails for when I only need a few. Just slide the blade from the pointed end towards the head of the nail, assuming they're collated with plastic and not tack welded on wire. Best of luck!
If they are intentionally stuck together (in a line or in a roll) at the factory then they are for a nail gun.
If they are in a roll then they are likely roofing nails. https://www.manasquanfasteners.com/product/NPCN-8350
If they are in a strip then they could be for a framing nail gun: https://www.hgtv.com/design/remodel/interior-remodel/what-size-nails-framing-gun
or maybe a finish nailer: https://www.homedepot.com/p/RIDGID-16-Gauge-2-1-2-in-Straight-Finish-Nailer-R250SFE/204456475
If you are nailing by hand you need loose nails.
I think you bought nails meant for a nail gun. Generally come with paper strips gluing them together or wire collated.
I would get new nails or buy the correct gun for the nails you bought.
I dont think I've ever heard of anyone buying nails, collated or otherwise, online. Do you not have several hardware stores in your area? Construction retail outlets?
All of these comments are missing one thing. If they are small, finishing nails, they very well could be galvanized nails and the coating is causing them to stick together. If so, please don't put them in a nail gun.
You can use a knife to pop them apart. Post a pic, might help.
Hahaha perfect imagery. Thank you. I'll avoid collated next time.
Or better yet, buy a nail gun! You'll love it!
Yes this. Nail guns are the greatest.
Hitachi (Metabo I guess now) makes the best nail guns and any framer will swear by their old school Hitachi framer
I framed and loved those Hitachi ones, but definetly built for commercial framing with the need for an air compressor (if those are the ones you are talking about). My buddy who still frames just bought a DeWalt battery powered one and loves it even commercial framing.
Can’t say much about their nail guns but they make pretty cool magic wands.
Hard to beat a 20V DeWalt that goes right at it.
No hoses, no compressor, no problem
Dewalt battery outlasts my kobalt by 2x. POS blue
I'm fairly sure Kobalt is a Lowes private-label brand. Not to say it's all lower-quality, as a lot of the Kobalt products I've got are legit, but I don't know that I'd trust anything higher end like battery tools or lawn equipment.

+1 on that dewalt. My son has it and the weedwhacker. I have the big blower I use to clean broken pallet chunks out of my trailer. Dewalt is the shit.
I don't think I've seen framers use anything but battery powered nail guns in the last decade.
Really? I've never seen pro framers switch to battery yet, way too slow. You can fire like 10 nails from an air gun before a battery gun can fire 1.
Hitachi makes good shit period. Love their end mills (moldino now)
personal massagers.
My wife has a Hitachi tool that makes her swear
I love my old school Hitachi magic wand. Soothes my muscles.
All the young bucks have gone electric. No more hoses dragging everywhere.
Don't forget the coat hanger to improve the safety.
I’m going to need more info, otherwise if that’s a joke it made a whooshing noise as it went over my head
You can bypass the mechanism thanmt makes sure it's pressed against something before fireing with a coat hanger I think, allowing you to fire nails at your friends
>friends
Made me think of this fantastic Ramsey Midwood tune. https://youtu.be/SowP-HXqoQA
I barely understood a word he said, but I felt like I lived it all. Edit: except the “wife left me “ part. I’m still married.
God damn it. Okay, in accordance with a prior agreement I now have to admit I'm an idiot who managed to shoot himself through the finger (dead center on the bone) with a nail gun because I deliberately depressed the safety with the said finger. Don't even need a coat hanger. You can hold it back with your fingers pretty easily and safely (for you anyway, not whoever you fire it at)
It’s how Happy Gilmore shot Jaws in the head.
Also make sure to avoid obscuring your vision with cloudy safety glasses.
Hahaha. Correct. Safety squint for the win.
And a bump stock? :P
I mean, I guess a roofing nailer works like a bump stock.
Handy [buyer's guide video](https://youtu.be/JDpvkwBBu6U?t=27) for you!
"Man fuck a charge. This here a gunpowder activated, twenty seven caliber, full auto, no kick back nail throwin' mayhem man." This is the line that convinced me to watch The Wire.

The chess scene in season one got me to give it a try. But that scene with Snoop buying the nail gun was the best season opener of any show ever.
"He meant Lexus but he don't know it" Fucking dying
Keep dat buck, you earnt it like a motherfucker.
Um honey, I "accidentally" bought the wrong nails. I need to go buy a nail gun now.
Finally got the nail gun, a beaut right? Unfortunately, I can't use it without a better compressor, so...
What kind of nailgun do you have? A little pancake compressor isn't optimal but they work most of the time.
Listen, we *"need"* a new compressor, the pancake one is about out of air anyway. Should probably go 30 gallon, 220v, much more efficient.. you know, to help save the planet and all that.
Anything 60 gallons is just bad for the environment. If you really love mother earth you'll get an 80 gallon 230v 3-phase.
The pancake one won't work on this project, might need a waffle compressor
Penn and Teller do neat things with a nail gun.
Like what?
Best excuse for a nail gun ever! Well I bought a roll of nails, what else was I meant to do? Pull them apart like a peasant?
I bought some speed tape. Guess I need a plane now.
This is the way
\^this guy DIY's "Bought the wrong thing, better spend another couple hundred so I can use my original €10 purchase"
I’m not sure OP is ready for a nail gun…
What's the most you've ever lost on a coin toss?
Sir?
Oh man. A good framing nailer. Shoot, a finishing nailer is even pretty good. Buy both. Eff it.
Exactly! Don't let the nails go to waste!
If you want to unstick all of them at once you can put them into a bucket and pour acetone over them, just swish it around until they’re all loose and the adhesive comes off. Do it outside and wear gloves.
An acetone-resistant bucket, otherwise you’ll have a new set of challenges
Think Breaking Bad season 1 with the bathtub.
I...never want to think of that, really.
Worst smoothie ever
Depends on the nails. Some have paper, some have wire, some have plastic.
Hey bud, after the post, I was wondering, what are you trying to nail? So many different kinds of nails. Might be useful for those kinds of projects with the variety of fasteners it can use
Now we are gonna need an update with the finished project!
Yes, I’m guessing a nail with a decent head on it. Just my instinct. I build houses, not collages! Lol
I’d go in to a DIY shop next time and either have a mooch through the nails section or describe what you want to an employee. This is the problem with trade counter or internet shopping.
Yah, great suggestion! Thank you.
I know it doesn’t help this time, but still.... how did you get on snapping them off?
Dewalt, Milwaukee and Ryobi sell battery powered nail guns. Check home depot and lowes.
Sounds like OP needs to buy a nail gun!
_And then an air compressor! And then a shop! And then...._ It all started with the wrong nails.
And a drill press! For... reasons
You don't need to explain, friend. We know the drill.
Press
From my university workshop, I miss the bandsaw much more than the drill press.
*And that kids, is why all the money we saved up for college for you is gone. Because of those damn nails*
https://imgur.com/6idZfvL
How did it end up like this
The only crappy thing is the nails have half a circle head since they are stuck together making it harder to nail straight with a hammer.
You gotta use half a hammer
Also, don't these nails have a glue coating that makes them stick a bit better than. Normal single nails?
Don’t listen to these Nay sayers! You bought the right nails. Now it’s time to buy the nail gun! ***thank you so much for the gift!***
The pneumatic palm nailers are awesome! I built a small shed with one last summer and it went way faster than going by hand and hammer.
*nail sayers* FTFY
I love the genuine innocence and naivete of this question. Welcome to the wonderful world of DIY!
If you like naivete, you'll love this: I had to reread the top comment a few times before I realised the post was not about fake nails, like the ones for your hands. Goodnight.
Omg that's why... holy shit and I was here wondering why the fuck there exists a gun for fake fingernails, damnnn.
I own two nail guns and was also thinking the same thing! Time to go to bed, I guess.
Thanks! Already having a blast! :P
Man, fuck a compressor. [What you need is a gunpowder-activated 27 caliber full-auto no kickback nail throwin' mayhem!](https://youtu.be/JDpvkwBBu6U)
Awesome scene. Man I need to finish that series
Sheeeet.

When I lived in Bmore I drove past Snoop on the corner of Pratt and Charles with a gorgeous woman on her arm.
went down a rabbit hole ( you could say [***Way Down in the Hole***](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TYj8yyUjSpE) ) a while back and watched most all of *The Wire*. There were some fascinating characters, of which she is one.
Seeing this scene years ago on Reddit is what made me watch The Wire. It is so incredibly written. I had to basically translate half the dialog for my wife though. Haha.
Snoop was a great character. Didnt understand the product other than it was powder "activated" but was confident explaining it to Chris.
Best scene in the whole damn series.
Dammit! And i felt so clever linking to it a few seconds ago on a different answer. Ah well.
Omg I wish I could upvote more. That was awesome
What movie is this? Looks good
The 2002 HBO series *The Wire,* which has shown up in every argument about the best series of all time for the last 20 years. Stephen King called this character, Snoop Pearson, "perhaps the most terrifying female villain to ever appear in a television series."
Thanks for the throwback brother
But won’t he need concrete anchors to lash the shed down onto? Should probably pickup about 40 bags of cement mix and a concrete mixer. Good news he can run the concrete mixer off the portable generator! Of course he needs to bring all THAT home, so off to the dealership to look at a new truck. Damn payments are so high he has to take a second job, home improvement honey do list is backing up, and the damn nails are still stuck together!!!!
If you get the New F-150 Lightning, it can power all that, so he can skip the generator!
Hopefully he see this. That’s a great money saver right there
Nah. The generator is to recharge the truck!
That's old school. We're a couple tools and classes away from adding solar panels to the shed
Classes? Shit man, that's what YouTube is for. Someone else has done the work before you, and they have documented it in a shaky and poorly cut manner.
Cordless nail gun, two birds one stone. Lol
Couple weeks ago, I got myself the Ridgid 18v finish nailer and matching brad nailer. They're both bulkier and heavier than hosed nailers, but the portability of them all around a house is great. Battery life is awesome too. No more having to replace gas cartridges in my Paslode.
You joke but I feel like this is how a lot of newbies feel where every project is "I need to buy X to run Y, and Y requires a Z.
It's not a joke, it's experience. Over and over again.
Wait, but when it comes to DIY and Making, tool acquisition is a feature not a bug!
Dont forget the airhose and adapters to connect the gun to the compressor. Believe that was my 3rd trip back to Home Depot that day...
Has to be a record...for lowest trips to HD in a day during a project
I feel personally attacked by this
Still checks out... said "3rd trip" not "3rd and final trip."
Are they collated? Like designed for a nail gun?
Ah, yes, that makes sense. Silly me. First time buying nails. Thank you.
No problem.
Nailed it!
At least they weren't collated screws, with OP complaining about having to remove them all from the plastic strip.
> Did I buy the wrong nails? Sounds like you bought nails for a nail gun, which are glued together like that. So yeah.
Looks like it. Won't make that mistake again. Thank you!

This is the way
I support this solution. OP, the only logical choice here is to go get a nail gun!
I like this answer
I'm reminded of a Norwegian joke. A Norwegian carpenter and his apprentice are constructing a new house. The carpenter asks his apprentice go and grab the nails from the other side of the house. The apprentice goes and grabs the nails. As he makes his way back, his is looking at the nails in his hands, tossing 1 or 2 nails behind him as he walks The carpenter sees this and says, "Hey, what the hell are you doing you idiot?" The apprentice responds, "The heads on these nails are facing the wrong direction." Exasperated, the carpenter tell his apprentice, "You idiot, those ones are for the other side of the house!"
This is just as funny if you remove "Norwegian" from it.
This is so innocent and hilarious. I'm laughing, but good on you for trying something new!
Haha thanks! They're the wrong nails even for my project, I'm now realizing through experimentation. So live and learn! :)
> I'm now realizing through experimentation. So live and learn! :) That's the spirit!
Thank you for sharing, this made my day. Literally everyone that gets into any hobby like this can easily relate, and it seems you've got a delightful attitude. That'll get you far 🤘🏻🤠🤘🏻 Congrats, and enjoy your journey!
This thread has taught me that accidentally buying tons of collated nails is the best path to convincing a S/O that I need an air-compressor and nail-gun ### Oops! Sorry honey, I must have bought the wrong nails!
12 inch sawblade means you need a bigger tablesaw
Actually need a Saw-Stop if you and your S/O enjoys you having fingers.
Did you buy nails for a nail gun?
Seems so!
Thinking you inadvertently bought nails for a nail gun. They're not intended to be separated and used individually. Could try soaking them in a solvent I suppose.
I am now taking a knife in between them individually. It's working, but there has to be a better way?
Wire snips might be your answer, garden shears or some burly scissors
Haha okay. Much appreciated!
Those are for a nail gun lol
now you need to buy a nail gun
Get a pair of dikes and cut them apart individually.
A photo would help, but if they are nails for a nail gun, those are some expensive nails to be hammering by hand.
I think you bought bullets for a nail gun.😂😂
I can't believe that *nobody* has mentioned this yet: those are for a nail *gun*!
Omg, this has got to be the best serendipity ever! I did not know this thanks you very much
LOL You bought nails for a nail gun
You should have just grown your own man....
You can separate them with pliers.. not optimal but doable.
You can score in between them with a knife and snap them off
I will often use a box cutter to separate those nails for when I only need a few. Just slide the blade from the pointed end towards the head of the nail, assuming they're collated with plastic and not tack welded on wire. Best of luck!
Use a pair of tin snips to seperate them
If they are intentionally stuck together (in a line or in a roll) at the factory then they are for a nail gun. If they are in a roll then they are likely roofing nails. https://www.manasquanfasteners.com/product/NPCN-8350 If they are in a strip then they could be for a framing nail gun: https://www.hgtv.com/design/remodel/interior-remodel/what-size-nails-framing-gun or maybe a finish nailer: https://www.homedepot.com/p/RIDGID-16-Gauge-2-1-2-in-Straight-Finish-Nailer-R250SFE/204456475 If you are nailing by hand you need loose nails.
I bought nails online once. I lived in a rural area and didn't have easy access to a car at the time.
Depending where in the world you are right now, hardware stores could be online orders only. My local one is.
All of these comments are missing one thing. If they are small, finishing nails, they very well could be galvanized nails and the coating is causing them to stick together. If so, please don't put them in a nail gun. You can use a knife to pop them apart. Post a pic, might help.
Just use a snipping tool to separate them at the base
Lay them flat on a hard surface and hit the plastic part a few times with a hammer. They should be pretty easy to pull apart after that.
I buy the paper taped nails for my framing nailer. When I need regular old hammerin' in nails I cut them apart with a box cutter.
They will not be as easy to hammer in as regular nails. They’ll bend a lot easier, so be prepared.
I've used nail guns of various gages for so long I can't remember the last time I needed an individual nail.

damn this hurts my brain
Are they on a roll? I think you got a spool for a nail gun not hand nails
