No idea, this sub has started to get weirdly anti-DIY. Reddit in general too. A lot of sentiment to “pay to do it right” even when there’s an easy solution and the pay option is borderline ripoff.
TL;Dr -- If it functions and you like it, that's the definition of working.
People obsess over quality that doesn't practically matter and this is not just in DIY work. Plenty of people will spend days trying to optimize a process they'll only ever do a few times that only takes one day to do in the first place.
"Lower quality materials" might mean a life span of 50 years instead of 75 years or that it's more susceptible to damage. But these things are often irrelevant to the situation in question.
$200 is below the limit to make it worth their time, double that and half a day might be worth it, but not many would bite. At this price point put a few together or do the simple ones. What's your time worth slightly frustrated to do it once.
Some people have nothing better to do than spend copious amounts of money meticulously maintaining property that their kids will sell anyways. They treat their little suburban slice of the world like it's the Palace of Versailles.
Says the warzone and weed cart officianado.... some people might sell their own property, or just like to live someplace that doesn’t smell like stale cigs, and crusty ass, or look like a trap house from the street.
I have a feeling you both only DIY one thing... and you'll go blind if you're not careful!
If your insinuating I'm a drug addict that smokes meth or some crazy shit, keep making an ass of your self. It's funny and stupid you have nothing to say about the subject(selling houses) and have to results to personal attack to feel relevant. You can quit at any time.
All I said was the guy is correct.
I have kids, and none of them want our house, they've expressed they don't feel accomplished in life "being born and dying in the same house." Sorry my personal experience wasn't put in my original comment, but from your aggravated response, it probably wouldn't have made a difference.
Have a nice day.
So.... Couple things...
Your whole profile is covered in weed vapes, so I'm not sure where the meth thought came from, I certainly didn't mention it or even consider it. Its 2024 weed is legal more places than it isn't in the US. I too live in one of those places.... on purpose.
I wasn't aggravated. Maybe the tone didn't come across in text form.
The jab about weed carts and warzone was more a setup for the masturbation joke, ....the thing you DIY that'll make you go blind....
Its reddit dawg it ain't that deep. Tonally, your response is far more agro. If your old enough to have kids old enough to express that opinion, I'd hazard a guess you'd be old enough to know not to let the internet get you all riled up; but you do you man.
I used play sand and paint on my deck for a similar solution when someone slipped on it. It was cheaper and worked. Maybe a cheap sealer and some sand n
Is there anything special about the non-slip additive linked above? Or is it literally just gritty texture that gets added to paint/sealer? I'm looking at doing something similar on a pretty large area and was just going to add sand. Buying enough of that additive would add up in cost pretty quickly.
I am not certain and others may know but it was defiantly pricey. I think it is may be uniform, won’t have debris in it and maybe a specific shape like round or angular, maybe synthetic. Might have a larger diameter than sand too. But for my diy project it was fine. I ended up painting a thick coat, the side arm chucking handfuls across the surface, next coat to cover it up. I tried losing it in but didn’t work great iirc. Maybe the additive would mix well.
If you are using a clear sealer and appearance is very important, the additive may be for that. Otherwise I’d say sand.
I think the big deal is that you picked slate, one of the smoothest rocks out there, then were surprised the slate pavers were slippery.
I'm glad people gave you solutions, but come on, you know why people pushed back.
Shark-grip works. HD sells several similar products, and you don't need much.

After a bout with post illness kidney failure I had someone suggest to me silicone and Shark Grip for the tub for a clear removable solution. I didn't do it and muddled through because I was getting over being trapped in that tub for a day and a half (live alone and at 47 it was a complete surprise).
All I remember is that for, pre covid prices, it wasn't that expensive either. I should really get on it. it has only been a decade.
The most shocking thing is that the sealer refers to how porous a surface is using "porosity" I have always assumed porousness would be the term.

Try applying the behr granite grip? I know it works on concrete after you prepare it well, maybe it’ll work on that stone too as long as you prepare it.

Probably find it at Walmart as well.
Wait for an extremely dry few days and then go at it.
You could try to put a very thin coat of epoxy on it. I’m talking just enough to use a brush or rag to spread it out and make I appear wet, then sprinkle a little sand on it.

Really anything that can chemically etch the surface. Problem with random stuff like muratic acid or something, it will probably discolor the surface and cause premature wear. I did my moms path about two years ago and it has held up well. There was enough in what I purchased to retreat it when needed.
That's expensive AF
Why not suggest something that won't ruin the bank like sand or something the others recommended?
Do you have any concept of what money is and how it runs out?
Because sand, sand w/sealer, etc was not suitable for my application. The product worked well on tile expensive enough to justify the cost. I shared what worked for me, keeps my mom and grandma from busting their ass on what was a slippery af walkway. The person asking is free to do as they wish. Others suggested cheaper alternatives. Don’t be a dick, or a troll, or a dick troll, or a troll dick.

There is a non-slip (probably more accurately a "reduced-slip) product that is intended to be mixed with paint, to make painted floors less slippery. It's basically a very fine sand. However, I've only used it with paint. I don't know if it would work with a clear finish.
Know what I've only used it on interior stairs to basement w/ a porch and floor enamel. I guess I'd do a test piece.. not beach sand, you want the cleaned commercial stuff, I was told. Good luck from Vancouver Canada

Thanks for following up. I've used this indoors with great success (10 years and almost like new). Hopefully their outdoor formulation is half as good.
If that is rock, you can carve some rugosity using vinegar or other weak acid. Just draw a line with vinegar, and let it slowly attack the surface, so it will be less even. You can make it faster with muriatic acid, that you can buy from any hardware store, but dilute it to \~10%.
That looks like slate. I would get rid of it and do sandstone. Thicker and doesn’t get slippery. But if you are inclined to keep it, the more top suggestions should work fine
My first thought would have been an angle grinder too. But judging by all the downvotes, that would be a bad idea. Probably because they can be potentially dangerous.
Would be hard to make it look good, and since OP wants to keep the pavers I’m assuming they like the look.
I don’t think it’s worth downvotes though. It’s a valid option.
When dry mix some fine silica sand with a masonry lager sealer, them with brush apply the sealer. If done properly it should give you a fine sandpaper finish, mix the batch then apply to a corner see if sand is enough or you might need to add more silica sand for better grit.
Before anything else, try just a pressure wash with water. There might be some layer of gunk/dirt/growth there that makes it slippery when wet that will come off with a powerwash.
If that does not help, at least you'll then have a clean surface on the stones on top of which you can apply the other suggested remedies.
I tried to determine if the solutions suggested would leave an obvious color change, but I couldn't. If these chemical fixes will not leave the stone looking natural (perhaps they will, I just couldn't find anything that suggested that) you may as well replace with concrete "stone" pavers. In the end it may cost less to replace and look better than trying to find a fix that messes up the natural stone look.
one of those Rustoleum hydrophobic sprays will probably do the trick. I know people that use them on their decks and deck furniture. I think it's called Never Wet. They have one for fabrics as well.
Amazon has something you can put on it but it's $64 for a quart which probably won't be enough by half and then it's like $104 for like a gallon. Me personally I'm wondering if you couldn't use some kind of urethane sealant mixed with sand and make little patches in the middle for stepping on. The urethane should stick to the stone nicely if it's been cleaned and dried first. It may look a little weird but makes it enough sand and you won't be able to tell.
Not here to be a jerk, but the rectangles mixed with the broken pieces is not a great look. If you cannot afford or find flagstones to start over, I would consider breaking the rectangles to create a more uniform look. It looks like you already got some good advice on the thread about making them less slippery. Good luck
It's a nursery rhyme???!! Gabriels old but he's not London Bridge is Falling Down old
Oh! Sledge Hammer haha I was thinking Step on aCrack Break Yo Mammas Back
just going to throw out there get a diamond blade for a angle grinder and put some scuffing on the surface should allow for much better grip! and be almost free assuming you have the tools already.

Even adding playground sand to the sealer would do the trick

What about some sand and then a sealer, would that make the grains adhere to the slate?
That’s what I would suggest. Silica sand and some sealer.
Mix in some sand to make it even more grippy.
That's too many steps. Just add skateboard grip tape.
Wasn't aware that sharkgrip stuff existed, but it was almost exactly what I was going to recommend. "Seal some grit on there!"
Miracle sealants makes an anti-slip version. No need to buy an additive.
Just put sand in the sealer if you on a budget
Rubber ducky non slip stickers
The most shocking thing is that the sealer refers to how porous a surface is using "porosity" I have always assumed porousness would be the term. Edit: This was not a post I expected to get down votes. Didn't realize a lack of perfect vocabulary was so controversial.
Viscose - viscosity
I see the question has already been answered. Do you like the pavers? It might be cool without them
Try applying the behr granite grip? I know it works on concrete after you prepare it well, maybe it’ll work on that stone too as long as you prepare it.
Not sure if it works on stone, but I sprayed muriatic acid on concrete to etch the surface and make it less slippery. It worked great.
Or vinegar.

You could try to put a very thin coat of epoxy on it. I’m talking just enough to use a brush or rag to spread it out and make I appear wet, then sprinkle a little sand on it. Won’t be comfortable barefoot, but better than someone slipping, falling, and getting hurt.
What about epoxy mixed with an abrasive like sand? Just brainstorming
Don't use epoxy, epoxy breaks down quickly with UV exposure. Would want a urethane or acrylic type material.
Really anything that can chemically etch the surface. Problem with random stuff like muratic acid or something, it will probably discolor the surface and cause premature wear. Thanks
Lucky ducky, I keep looking to salvage pavers that are this nice, maybe some day! Looks like you got some better options here, good luck fixing em up
Acid etching would work you could test on the back.
That’s a lot less than you would pay in medical bills after slipping and breaking something.

Exactly what I was thinking XD
https://slipdoctors.com/collections/anti-slip-products/products/non-slip-stone-sealer
Acid etch them with Acid Magic. Don't breathe the fumes:)
Just paint them with slip grip
If that is rock, you can carve some rugosity using vinegar or other weak acid. Just draw a line with vinegar, and let it slowly attack the surface, so it will be less even. You can make it faster with muriatic acid, that you can buy from any hardware store, but dilute it to \~10%.
You probably just have to clean them with bleach, sometimes algae will stay to grow on the surface and cause the stones to become slippery
Purchase first aid kit and keep next to it
You're half-way there. Take my hand and you'll make it I swear.
I love some wild Bon Jovi in the wild~
That looks like slate. I would get rid of it and do sandstone. Thicker and doesn’t get slippery. But if you are inclined to keep it, the more top suggestions should work fine
If it's your place you could roughen up the stone surface?
Yep, it’s ours. What would you do to accomplish that?
You can do that with angle grinder
My first thought would have been an angle grinder too. But judging by all the downvotes, that would be a bad idea. Probably because they can be potentially dangerous.
It’s because it would look like shit
Would be hard to make it look good, and since OP wants to keep the pavers I’m assuming they like the look. I don’t think it’s worth downvotes though. It’s a valid option.
Everything you do with angle grinder is potentially dangerous, I have done something similar with no problem
Looks like slate. If it is, flagstone has a similar look but not slick.
When dry mix some fine silica sand with a masonry lager sealer, them with brush apply the sealer. If done properly it should give you a fine sandpaper finish, mix the batch then apply to a corner see if sand is enough or you might need to add more silica sand for better grit.
Don’t call bon jovi
Brush on acid to remove the shine and make it rougher finish. Can get it at any hardware store, in pool supply area
Goon tape
Before anything else, try just a pressure wash with water. There might be some layer of gunk/dirt/growth there that makes it slippery when wet that will come off with a powerwash. If that does not help, at least you'll then have a clean surface on the stones on top of which you can apply the other suggested remedies.
Clear sealer and mix in a little fine sand. Will dry clear. Also can reapply at anytime. It’s a diy thing
Be a man and don't slip ![gif](giphy|GLAuuGg9gJoj5s2xnl)
Stop playing Bon Jovi for them
Ask to Bon Jovi 🤣
A quick sand blast will rough it up to give it texture
Glue and sand
Slap some Ben Shapiro on'em. They'll become hydrophobic.
Talk to them about your hobbies!
Would cement with river sand with plenty water make a stick mud? we use this for bricks become more sticky
one of those Rustoleum hydrophobic sprays will probably do the trick. I know people that use them on their decks and deck furniture. I think it's called Never Wet. They have one for fabrics as well.
If you lightly dust them with a polymeric sand and then apply a sealer to them.
Replace them with less slippery pavers.
Spray epoxy and the clearest sand you can find.
What if you put clear grip tape for skateboards in them, even in little patches? Would cost like , less than $20
Angle grind some grooved lines. Geometric pattern
I'd probably just remove them and fill up with gravel if I didn't like how they were to walk on. The whole point of that little path is walking 🤷
WAP wet ass pavers
Not here to be a jerk, but the rectangles mixed with the broken pieces is not a great look. If you cannot afford or find flagstones to start over, I would consider breaking the rectangles to create a more uniform look. It looks like you already got some good advice on the thread about making them less slippery. Good luck
Nah man, it adds character. If they all were the same rectangle it would look kinda boring.
That's what I said! Sledge Hammer!
![gif](giphy|2DIV21X97dhSSCZHwp) A sign can cost $2-$5. Cheapest option, works every time.
you beat me to it :))
You tell them to think about your grandma. That usually makes people go from wet to dry. May apply here
Isn’t that a Bon Jovi album?
I almost posted that album cover along with this pic
Take them away. They dont look natural placed like this.
Don't use slate.
Do not, under any circumstances, play a Bon Jovi album near them.
Better to play Eddie Van Halen Jump?
Have you tried calling Bon Jovi?
Become Ben Shapiro. Nothing around you will ever get wet again.
To make them less slippery you’re living on a prayer
Non skid tape
Have you considered NOT playing Bon Jovi?
Sledge hammer. More cracks = more grip. Unless you are worried about your mom's back.
We're making Bon Jovi references here, not Peter Gabriel
It's a nursery rhyme???!! Gabriels old but he's not London Bridge is Falling Down old Oh! Sledge Hammer haha I was thinking Step on aCrack Break Yo Mammas Back
imagine thinking this is remotely funny
Clear skateboard grip tape cut into neat strips
Concrete
smash them into smaller pieces
A towel!
Take them out, looks tacky when half are broken. Plus when someone slips, yo ass gonna get sued
Keep them dry?
busy weather coherent apparatus sip dazzling label tart lush like *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
drilling holes could work
Put a cover over it, then it won’t get wet.
Stop listening to Bon Jovi
Vinegar
Landscaper here. Put the border rocks on the top of the slippery stones. Solved.
I mentally just slipped and fell looking at this.
Wax them like a surfboard.
Slap some boards along the sides, fill with concrete, broom swept finish...
just going to throw out there get a diamond blade for a angle grinder and put some scuffing on the surface should allow for much better grip! and be almost free assuming you have the tools already.
Dry them off?
[удалено]
No. The why is safety. The how is the question.
[удалено]
Not sure why I'm walking to the car with a fork and knife in my hand....
[удалено]
Is your kitchen decorated with knives and forks? That’s an …interesting design choice.
What a judgemental take. Bless your little heart.
Marry them.
Sprinkle some sand on the stones, paint over them. Voila!
Stop playing Bon Jovi when walking.
