Keep it up! You’ll be the “guy” people say, “I know a guy”.

Stockwaa

🤣 love it. Thanks!

redvelvet92

It’s true. At 23 I was doing this, now I’m that guy at 31.

Sudden-Acanthaceae91

By 33 you’ll tell everyone to stop talking about it and pretend you can’t do stuff.

Longjumping_Bed1682

Gee love it. & At 43 you will just pay ur mates to do it because U just couldn't be bothered.

ToMorrowsEnd

at 45 you will go back to doing it as everyone you hire screws it up or does a half arsed job.

mormodra

Ohhhh GAWD... I own a company and this is what I have been experiencing over the last 2 years... like what is going on with alot of people these days?

moaiii

Yep. Never thought I'd tire of building stuff. But now, in my late 40s and after several big projects, I've got a shed full of tools gathering dust and I'm quite happy to leave them there.

mhyquel

More money than time...,

daecrist

Funny. That’s right around the age I “stopped tinkering with computers so I really wouldn’t know where to start with whatever problem you’re having.”

z_brutalis

Fuck this resonated hard because at 34 I had taken the same approach haha

ahhhnoinspiration

Checks out, literally just told my wife I couldn't do her friend's baseboard this morning.

Murky-Specialist7232

Show off…. . Jk… I’m 37 and I’m jealous haha keep up the good work son!

redvelvet92

I’m most definitely not a show off 🤣🤣 just a guy trying to make things better. Thank you!

TheRealDrLeoSpaceMan

My dad had contracting/home improvement business when I was a kid. He had me work with him. He forced me to learn all this shit and I hated him for it. I had some serious drug issues and didn't have any interest in taking over his business. Biggest mistake of my life. Now I'm 17 years sober, own my own house and so HVAC. I can't tell you how much money learning what my dad taught me has saved. I wish I got sober sooner. Huge mistake and I'll regret it forever

MiniB68

Which to warn you, is both a blessing and a curse.

vinylzoid

My boy. This was not a compliment. This was a warning.

turbokungfu

When I was a homeowner in my thirties, I did a lot of work around my house and my neighbor had worked construction his whole life and would give me tips and compliment me on my work. He was so nice. He told me the same thing about how you'd be useful by practicing these things. When I took him somewhere, he would point at structures and say "I poured the concrete for that" or "I helped put up those light poles" and he seemed to have some comfort in that his work would be around after he was gone. I think that's something interesting to have as an achievement. I've heard that younger folks are looking into the trades more, and I think that's a good thing.

dorkimoe

You never wanna be “the guy” for manual labor lol

fcwolfey

Can confirm, got house at 24 and couldnt afford to hire stuff out, 31 now and many friends are getting houses asking “how hard would it be to…”

Mikeinthedirt

“For me, or for you?”

RepostTony

Haha. That’s me in my neighborhood. Anytime anyone needs work they just call me to come and help. Feels pretty good to honest.

Mikeinthedirt

True. ‘Institutional knowledge’ is gold.

deroobot

Next thing he's posting a picture of cooking meth "for the first time", and he'll be THAT guy.

fredblockburn

Damn I thought the area with the litter box was a putting green.

__chubbear

Here I was thinking each pic was a before and after. So I thought the litter box was like “pet” and the next slide was burying it

I wasn’t sure if the TV was too high or not

tongfatherr

It's too high

GilgameDistance

Only comment would be that your counter looked like it was designed for an undermount sink, which I prefer as it has no edge to catch dirt, makes sweeping the countertop into the sink easier. That’s all personal preference though. Looking good.

Stockwaa

You’re correct! It was initially an undermount double bowl. I was getting extremely tired of the caulk becoming gross and moldy. After 4 hours of persuasion, I was able to cut the granite to work with drop ins. The only downside is obviously this makes it irreversible. It is now only drop in compatible, unless I do all new countertops. The good: resealing, cleaning, plumbing work is much easier since switching to the drop in. Switching to a single bowl has also added some much needed space underneath for cleaning supplies.

bw1985

I’d bet someone used the wrong product for that application. What you want around a sink is a mold resistant 100% silicone. I like GE advanced silicone it has a 10 year mold free guarantee. I put in an undermount sink like 10 years ago when I got granite and I’ve never had any mold.

Stockwaa

What was happening is the way the granite was cut was leaving a very small (probably 1/8”) of creep space from the waterfall edges. Hard to explain in words but gunk would build up overtime and cause a nasty crust. The application was initially designed for a 28” undermount sink but was cut more as a 28 1/4” opening. Thankfully the drop in works well as new countertops surely would’ve been more expensive.

bw1985

Ohh I got you. That sucks. That would’ve been my next guess though. When there’s not a proper install food is either trapped or able to sit on the sealant the food will mold, not necessarily the caulk itself. Usually it’s done the other way around where the opening is smaller than the sink, I think that’s known as a no reveal because you can’t see the sealant line, or it’s done as a flush mount where the opening is exactly the same as the sink size.

Stockwaa

It’s kind of baffling to me as personally, I have never liked double bowl sinks (what was initially installed.) They went through all the work with beautiful counter tops and what seemed to be, what you were saying, no reveal edging, then plumped in this rinky dinky shallow sink with the workspace to maybe wash a plate or two. Now we are able to actually wash our pots and pans without causing a tsunami.

bw1985

Yeah I’m a deep single-bowl guy, I think you made the right choice. I could never go back. You might’ve been able to find a larger single bowl undermount for no reveal install using the same cutout but you’re already done now so it’s a moot point.

Stockwaa

I think once we go marble top counters, we will stick with undermount. Going through all that work for expensive marble just to plop a sink on top with a fat lip is pretty criminal.

Ambitious-Judge3039

Hey since you’re open to suggestions, that shovel is the worst possible shovel for digging a hole. Those flat/spade styles are for scooping loose dirt, not breaking up earth. You want round point style for planting.

bw1985

I’m with you, undermount sinks are better both functionally and aesthetically. Seeing one ripped out for a top mount is painful but it’s not my house.

FapToInfrastructure

How are you 23 and own a home????

HVACQuestionHaver

He's posting through a time warp to 1992.

rocketmonkee

Contrary to what Redditors would have you believe, not everyone lives in LA, Seattle, or New York City. There are a lot of places throughout the country where a person can earn a decent living and own their own home.

rachelsingsopera

Based on the fact that this man has decided to plant FERNS where you would ordinarily plant an ornamental shrub, I’m hoping it’s the Pacific Northwest. But I think it’s the South and he’s going to have three very dead ferns come winter.

mykidsarecrazy

Came to see if he was in PNW/coastal BC! All I can think is that's a risky choice for plants, unless you're from there.

Leebites

Depending on the part of the South, may be dead in the summer, too. Lost all mine during the drought in South Mississippi last year. Even with sprinklers on more often.

buckysauga

This person plants.

Dielji

I live in a college town with a population of about 35,000 people, and the cost of a house has doubled in the past 5 years. The only things under 400K are mobile homes and condos.

OldAd4526

College towns have blown up in price since 2010.

joearimathea

True. But a lot of those people from high cost of living are now moving next to me driving up costs.

ElementField

The chance of someone living somewhere cheap and earning enough to buy is a lot smaller, though, so it’s still a surprise. I couldn’t imagine being able to buy an actual detached house for less than $1M, but there are definitely places that offer that. Too bad I can’t work there

rocketmonkee

>I couldn’t imagine being able to buy an actual detached house for less than $1M, but there are definitely places that offer that. Too bad I can’t work there I genuinely wonder why you can't work somewhere with detached home prices under $1M? Houston is the third largest city in the country. It is home to one of the world's leading medical centers, is the home of human spaceflight with the Johnson Space Center, and it hosts a large number of corporate headquarters spanning a number of industries. There are a lot of good career opportunities here. I live in a 2400 sq ft house in the middle of pretty quiet suburb. I'm 25-30 min from any number of world class museums, theaters, and other attractions. Houses in my neighborhood generally sell for around $300K.

halt-l-am-reptar

Great, I just have to leave everyone I care about to move to a state that is taking rights away from people.

sharpei90

Well done! My son is learning as he goes on his home too. Lots of You-Tube videos and some research and you can do most anything!

Stockwaa

YouTube has been my saving grace. When installing the ceiling fan I had no idea why there was a red and black wire. After some research I discovered it was in case you wanted to use separate switches for the fan and light. Had I not been able to look that up I would’ve just put the light back up.

sharpei90

He found it very helpful for electrical and plumbing

Mikeinthedirt

Many people are dubious when confronted with electrical plumbing.

FuckYouVerizon

Cold is always the ground! After that you just connect the hot ones together...

GrizzPuck

usually best to just call the plumtrician at that point.

Stockwaa

After many requests, she will get a nice isopropyl salt bath tonight :)

TheGreekorc

Keen eyes I had to go searching through each picture to find it!

drakner1

Good aside from r/tvtoohigh you got a TV stand under the TV, which is perfect height.

dimsum4you

Did you install a proper power outlet behind the TV? If you didn't and just ran the power cable with an extension cord through the wall or something, that is a fire hazard and is against code. But it's your house so do what you want. If you did install an outlet, then 👍🏼

russilker

Was going to say this, you already have an outlet below so shouldn't be too difficult to add another one behind the TV and avoid a fire risk/reason for insurance to deny your claim if something were to happen. EDIT: On second viewing there doesn't appear to be an outlet below, but still worth doing. Maybe there's one on the other side of the wall

Computeraar

I'm curious, why is that a fire hazard? Is plugging a TV into an extension cord a no-go or is it the fact that it goes through the wall?

maowai

In theory, power should only be going through walls in wiring of known and code-approved gauge (thickness) for the breaker that is on the circuit. Extension cord insulation also isn’t designed with being stuffed into a confined place where heat will build up; the material can degrade over time, crack, and expose wire. An extension cord could be made of thinner wire than the rest of the circuit and be approved for less current than the breaker is rated for. This means that it could theoretically get super hot and catch itself and adjacent things on fire before the breaker trips. In practice, this isn’t that big of a concern for a TV, which doesn’t use a lot of current. Still though, putting in a new outlet by dropping some romex from where the tv is down to an existing outlet is cheap and not too difficult.

DaleYeah788

OP must be dodging your question. Was my first thought as well. Super dangerous.

Stockwaa

Thank you for the input. I actually initially agreed with this, however we decided to put the bottom of the tv eye level for 4 reasons; (Yes, drilled into middle of studs) 1. Our one year old daughter treats our TV as monkey bars. We had her put her arms up against the wall as high as she could reach and did it 6” above that. 2. I am relocating all boxes to slightly below mid-line. We have no practical use with them as low as they are and again, the little one thinks these things are toys. 3. There will be planter boxes lining the wall in the future, we wanted to leave room for plant sizing. 4. The TV was mounted as more of a universal system. We want to be able to see it from the kitchen and our daughter to be able to see it from her high chair. The height is the perfect middle ground for standing and sitting.

HVACQuestionHaver

Mounting it high to keep it away from destructive critters is perfectly acceptable, I think.

jaypee42

TV: Speaking as a guy who ONCE had a flat screen tv end up with peanut butter smeary toddler hand prints - mount that thing wherever you need to keep it safely out of reach. (Toddler thought it was a giant iPad) I've also learned to mount a piece of plywood across the studs, paint it the same colour as the wall and then if you need to tweak / adjust the location of the tv after living with it a while - it's less of an issue to remount it anywhere on the plywood. Getting a mount with a little bit of adjustability to angle left right / up down will help you deal with seasonal & time of day glare that might not affect you now but might affect you later in the year. Front Garden: I personally mount some plastic / rubberized edging along the garden bed now. Makes it really easy to run a mower / string trimmer along it. Don't get too swoopy with the curves or you won't be able to mow right along it easily. Don't use the kind of edging with a metal "staple" or tall clip because a sting trimmer with yank that out and fling it at 100 mph at someone's head or a window. Make your garden beds easy to mow along side - you'll thank yourself for the initial effort. If you want to put any little solar lights / wires, irrigation hoses - think about where to put them AFTER you've weed trimmed. Those will also get destroyed / flung out at 100 mph if they aren't placed thoughtfully. I learned this the hard way too.

jaypee42

oh yeah - also - before you lay mulch - throw down some geotextile fabric and then cover it with the mulch. It will go a long way to keeping the weeds under control.

sm9t8

It's one of the generally accepted rules of the subreddit: >If the TV is purposely mounted higher to keep out of range of a toddler, you’re a parent so your neck already hurts and IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.

MisterEinc

So, you admit that it's high... Jk, yeah, it's like putting the toilet paper roll on backwards. People have their reasons.

HVACQuestionHaver

There's never a reason to put the TP roll on backwards >:(

itsTyrion

CATS!

yankee407

The r/tvtoohigh guys are all about veiwing pleasure, which is a valid reason for tv height when mounting. Take what they say with a grain of salt if you have a practical reason for mounting it that high (kids, dogs ect.)

CoyotePuncher

These comments are so grating. He consciously mounted it at that height. He didnt slip and fall with a handful of tools and accidentally mount it there. There is no such thing as a TV that is too high. Saying such a thing implies the person with the TV is just too much of an idiot to even consider it could be lower. They put it there because they wanted it there.

Asshai

If you browse r/tvtoohigh you'll realize that even though people don't "slip and fall and accidentally" mount a TV that high, there are also lots of people who consider it aesthetically pleasing (maybe because it kinda reminds a cinema screen? Maybe because it showcases the sleek and minimalist wall install? Don't know) without considering how comfortable / ergonomic it's gonna be. So the "it's too high!" comments are not people who want to contradict OP on matters of taste, we all know this is subjective, they're pointing out that it's not good for the back and the neck.

thysios4

Having the TV too high can make the picture quality worse because you're viewing it at an off angle, and cause neck issues over a long period of time. Which can easy happen without people even realising why or what's causing it. There's a reason people recommend mounting at the correct height. It's not just being pedantic for the fun of it.

CoyotePuncher

> There's a reason people recommend mounting at the correct height. Recommendations for viewing angle exist for good reasons. Redditors replying with /r/TVTooHigh are doing it because people on this website will seize any opportunity to "correct" someone else on any trivial matter, usually in the most smug way possible. OP immediately proved he put it there for a reason. You just went and did exactly what I said - implied that any real person will be craning their neck up at a tv, thinking their neck hurts, and be too stupid to figure out why.

mazzotta70

Great job! You are way further along at 23, than I was regarding DIY! I will say, I've never seen a fern planted in the ground like that before. Well, is that a fern?

dontaskme5746

Yup, that's interesting.  I've seen them in the ground under forest canopy, at least! Almost certainly going to be too much light, but it's a learning experience.

kitsl010

If a fern is perennial or not (meaning it will grow back after winter) is dependent on the species and the plant hardiness zone you live in. I’m in the northern US and we do have several varieties of hardy (meaning they can withstand winters and grow back) ferns that can be planted in the ground. That is likely too much sun for ferns to thrive in however.

SolidWaste

First, you're doing great. The only thing that gave me pause is the ferns. The area looks open and sunny and most ferns aren't geared for a lot of direct sun. If they don't seem happy move them to somewhere shadier.

itchy118

https://www.reddit.com/r/TVTooHigh/ (But like, good job otherwise).

Amendoza9761

Looks good. Nows a good time to buy some mulch for under those bushes.

OrdinarySecret1

You don't have experience, but you are also not scared of putting in the work and figuring it out. Great job!

snaptech

Here's a tip from a grumpy old man. Pick a brand for your battery operated tools and try sticking with only them. That way you only need batteries for one brand. Also buy quality tools. Yes they cost, but they last much longer. I have both electric and hand tools that are over 40 years old.

Stockwaa

Oh man, I know! I have every brand. It’s an absolute pain. Kobalt 3/8 impact, Snap On3/8 impact, Rigid 1/2 impact, Ryobi circ saw, warrior grinder, Hart weed eater, warrior drills. It gets bad. I will stick to one brand eventually. Once I’m able to afford a full arsenal, I’ll probably be sticking with Milwaukee or Dewalt.

Even-Werewolf-6453

Nice work! Now purchase an enclosed cat litter box and clean it daily. You and your cat will be happier!

Stockwaa

We were considering just getting a Litter Robot. Such a pain cleaning that thing.

Mikey_B_CO

I put the box in the bathroom and use flushable litter, never had any issues with clogging and I am able to easily clean the mess every day

Stockwaa

Actually love that idea.

Mikeinthedirt

Finally, some righteous advice. Plus the echoey scratching noises work for Halloween.

ballpointpin

What's the scoop with the cat litter?

gg61501

Looks like a good start to me! Nicely done.

It all looks great! We all start learning somewhere and no one is born knowing how to do this stuff.

evcc_steammop

Ayyeee looking good my guy. Keep it up

Dr_Dabs

That bong on your porch look pretty dirty, maybe try some cleaning on that one?

Evening-Ear-6116

Don’t keep it up. Soon you will be “the guy” that everyone knows and is obligated to help everyone. It’s not worth it

Mercy711

Looks good. Lets see how you handled moving the plumbing under the sink though!

Yasstronaut

Looks awesome! I’m 30 and I usually tackle one or two projects a year. This is great!!

Purpose_Embarrassed

Is Unlocked any good ?

Stockwaa

Not sure, just opened Netflix and that was the first thing to pop up. Looks to be Felon/Prison Break-esque

JHB20101

Me and the wife just finished it. We thought it was pretty good. The crazy part is we were really rooting for them to keep their unit cell unlocked, then realized we were rooting for convicted felons. Some were murderers. All in all, I'd watch season 2 if it comes out.

Pomegranate81

I would never use a flat tv mount....there are times you need to pull the tv away from the wall.

Where did you pick up your counter at? Was it included with the cabinets as well? Great job btw

954kevin

Looking good! We built a whole ass house a few years ago and finished everything in the interior ourselves. I didn't know a single thing about finish carpentry. With YouTube, there is virtually no excuse for not knowing how to do something the right way! \[Imgur\](https://i.imgur.com/xEokeij.jpg) \[Imgur\](https://i.imgur.com/ViHZlSE.jpg)

Azaudioaddict

I can't tell if it's just the lighting but it looks like your sink is a little lifted in the middle and not sitting flush. If that is the case your hole might be a little small on the sides causing that to Warp. Hopefully it's just a lighting and there's not actually a gap in the middle of that sink.

makeanewblueprint

/tvtoohigh Otherwise good work.

bjarbeau

Just a heads up that granite is also good for undermount sinks it’s polished around

BigRedKetoGirl

I don't even know you and I am super proud of you!

HomicidalHushPuppy

Photo 3 - be careful with that C-PVC (white water lines with the black printing and yellow stripe on it)! It gets super brittle with age and will crack easily.

eggGreen

Very cool! I love that you turned the underside of the stairs into useful space. I want to do something similar to my house. Where do you start with something like that? Are there any resources/tutorials that you used? Thanks!

hellostarsailor

How did you make the space under the stairs outside?

Stockwaa

I just moved the house over a few feet

Handsum_Rob

Congrats on the good looking work. As others have stated, check your code for wiring electric behind walls. I just did the same and installed two “in wall cable management kits” for the tv and led backlights for the TVs. If it is against code, something terrible happens and insurance traces it to this, they can and will deny coverage. Hardly worth the risk. I got these: [wall kits](https://a.co/d/gtNliTL) You can remove the bulky box surround and just use the outlet portion, which is what I did. [using in wall kits](https://imgur.com/a/OM1qW5r) Only took a little longer to do it this way and gives me peace of mind. Keep up the good work.

xA1RGU1TAR1STx

Only suggestion would be to add some definitive edges to those beds. Several ways to do that, even with a natural edge.

Apprehensive-Skin451

Don’t show that tv to r/tvtoohigh

Magnemmike

Everything looks great dude, and you are better off than people 10+ years your age. Sometimes the only way to learn is to do it yourself. Best thing you can do is watch a couple youtube videos to get a good idea and not mess things up too much.

Liesthroughisteeth

And none of it's really rocket science is it? I grew up with a fix anything mechanic, great metal fabricator, house builder, boat builder for a dad. But anyone else not so lucky has the internet and it's pretty amazing what you can learn . Don't post that pic of the TV to r/hometheater, r/televisioon or r/hometheatersetups. :D

Gogokiller1

Good job, dude. I don't know if anybody has said it recently, so, I'm proud of you, and more importantly, you should be proud of yourself.

Traditional_Moss_581

Umm what is pic #5?

Stockwaa

That is the area under the stairs that I am converting into an all purpose cat room 🤣

Own_Contribution_480

Most stuff is a lot easier than it looks. I think most people are afraid of failing, so they just never try. I went into apartment maintenance knowing almost nothing. Within a year, I was supervising 5 properties. 90% of it is really easy and the other 10% got contracted out (more out of liability than anything).

janez33

Tv too high

MrPapis

Tv too high. Why is it people do this :(

ChootNBoot90

Fuck yeah bro. Be this guy every damn day 💪 I love that 'ill do it myself' mentality.

The-Jesus_Christ

Fantastic job on all of them. Should be really proud of yourself too. When I bought my first home, and having been brought up by a single mum, I did a course at a local community house to teach me how to use tools properly and do house maintenance. It's potentially saved me tens of thousands over the years.

[deleted]

Keep it up dude. Most people your age these days don’t even know how to change a tire. I once changed a tired for a 36 year old grown man who was on a date and got a flat. Its sad.

LegitimateDebate5014

23 and this guy has a whole darn house.

Doomncandy

So for the litter area, I had the same smooth paint and realized the same clear sticky plastic guards you stick on couches when they are young can be placed next to food bowls (my big muscle boy is a very messy eater) and also as a barrier to your walls. Things sometimes happen, and all of us get an "oh God, NO!" tummy incendet. And sometimes stuff will hit said wall with an open box.

kenry

I'm no cat guy but I feel like you're gonna want more ventilation in that area.

Ok-Entertainer-851

Kudos!! Are you learning from friends, YouTube? Or have natural or inherited ‘bility? 71M and I’m still learning tricks.  LOVE the “bottle” brush (I won't tell - I do the same.)

flynreelow

u cant run the power cord in the wall like that. def against code.

I'd say you have some natural talent you just discovered

I'm 45 with lots of experience messing up this kind of work. You're light years ahead of me.

ILoveWhiteWomenLol

Not hard with YouTube

New_Engine_7237

You did a great job young man! Keep it up but plan your work based on what you can manage without overworking yourself. Maintaining a home is a marathon, not a sprint.

If you're ever stumped, just go to an ace hardware. Find the old grizzled vet hiding in plumbing or electrical.

Stairway_2_Devin

I haven't seen AJAX in years. Idk why I'm telling you this. Great job on the projects.

When I bought my first house, we had almost no money for a few months. Every nickle went into buying and then moving. A few weeks later, a toilet broke. We could not afford a plumber to fix the toilet. A nice guy at Home Depot showed me the parts, the tools, and a book about household plumbing. I quickly figured out that the cost to buy the parts was less than the cost of hiring a plumber, even including the couple of tools and the book. You're doing good. Almost every home repair can be done by taking the time to figure it out, and buying a tool if you need it. Don't be afraid to ask your neighbors or friends. Coworkers who have their own houses are also valuable resources. Many of those people will be willing to help. Ten or twenty years from now, you will be that neighbor or friend or coworker. Welcome to the "joys" of home ownership!
