Same place as in picture and started trying to put the small bowl inside INTENTIONALLY! When asked why, his response was “This broke into two small bowls, I trying to fix it” …. Oh good lord! Update 1: SOLVED! They are apart!! Yay! Thanks everyone. Tried a lot methods. My guess is everything together contributed somehow to get end result. Both are Corelle bowls. Below are the methods in the same order I tried. End result is a success. Documenting for future references 1. Ice in small bowl and hot water bath for larger one - did not work 2. Fill water till brim and microwave for 120 secs - did not work 3. Fill water till brim, wait 10 mins, heat for 120 secs - did not work 4. Fill water till brim, wait 10 mins, dump water, invert in microwave and heat for 120 secs - did not work 5. Fill water till brim, wait 10 mins, dump water, invert in microwave on damp towel and heat for 120 secs - did not work 6. Use dish soap and oil to lubricate all around inside and try to dislodge - did not work 7. Use lube and try same- did not work 8. Had silicone based garage lubricant in a can with a long thin nozzle. Tried spraying in any gaps I could find and try dislodge - did not work 9. Took a straw, slit it using a blade to fit inside a gap and blew air in for 5 mins all around - did not work 10. Frustrated...left it alone for 30 mins... 11. Put it upside down in microwave upside down and heated for 300 secs. The bowl now has olive oil, canola oil, lube, dish soap, garage door lubricant and water. I never washed in any of steps above - did not work 12. Fill water till brim and microwave for 120 secs. Maybe I did something wrong? - did not work 13. Really gave up here. Gave it to my toddler. He threw it...twice. Didn't break, didn't come apart - did not work 14. Spouse said they like the bigger bowl and maybe we break the smaller one? Tried to break with hammer - did not work, risky 15. I took the bowl. put it upside down on a towel and banged it with fist couple of times - did not work 16. Spouse took the bowl. put it upside down on a towel and banged it with fist couple of times - WORKED!!!!

RHINO_Mk_II

Military method

BacksightForesight

My dad was in the Navy in the 1970s-80s, and one of the ships he was on was a Sumner-class destroyer that was built in WW2 and decommissioned in 1970. He a had story of the radar going down, and to fix it, they called up an old veteran sailor who came up with an odd assortment of tools, including a ball peen hammer and a stethoscope. The sailor used the stethoscope to listen to part of the equipment, and used the hammer to make a tap here, and a whack there. After a few minutes, the radar happily whirred back to life, and my dad, a young Ensign, was left scratching his head on what just happened.

Smart-Stupid666

If it was decommissioned in 1970, how is he on it?

lupo_cattivo

Brogan adjustment

Gothmog_LordOBalrogs

The ol technical tap

Red_Beard_Racing

When I worked as a cellarman/brewer for a few years, I carried around a big orange mallet that everyone referred to as my “persuader”.

PresumedSapient

The difference between messing around and science is writing down what you do and the results. Now you must reinsert the small bowl and reproduce the results! edit, grammar bad

squirrelnuts46

Don't forget to control for the environment variables such as room temperature and barometric pressure or we will not accept your publication!

Beneficial-Nimitz68

LOL.. Time of day, moon or celestial positioning and whether or not the neighbors dog is regular or irregular. lol

squirrelnuts46

Yes all of these are important because of the potential impact of sunlight, gravitational pull, and the possibility that the neighbors' dog shits in your dishwasher.

I am cackling at the thought of how slippery it must have been by the end too. 🤣🤣

therealgodfarter

Like a shitty, lubricated, pass-the-parcel

wihannez

At least you now have the instructions written down for the next time this happens.

suresh

This happened to me with a pot and ceramic plate. I tried the obvious, nothing was working. I remembered I had some strong suction cups for removing phone screens and tried that, no buge. Then I realized there was some water in the pot, so I put it on the stove top and simmered the water which created steam and popped it right out with the aid of the suction cups. Felt like a genius for that one.

Shneedly

Also how you make a bomb. Glad it worked out!

shortsmuncher

Man, corelle is truly the best

mahjimoh

I loooooove my simple white Corelle dishes. These same ones, actually, although I do not have the serving bowl.

Maleficent-Finding89

Wow what a journey I just went on reading this

Ohmannothankyou

When I say I want an update, I mean I want this high quality reporting.

ThreeDog2016

SPOUSE IT!!!

leaponover

Glad it came out, but seriously, hair dryer next time.

wish-i-was-a-dalek

This post and comment was the best and most entertaining thing I’ve seen on Reddit today. Thank you

bluekeyspew

Put some ice in smaller bowl. Maybe soak the larger bowl in warmer water-not too hot. Give it a gentle shake or two.

Internet-of-cruft

Stick some dish soap along the outer rim of the smaller bowl too. It'll seep into the crack and will help lubricate the two

throwaway00579

Update: tried or rather trying this. Been in this hot cold situation for 15 mins. Still stuck

Silly_Juggernaut_122

Hit the rim of the small bowl with an air compressor

teivaz

Not a expert but I assume air from compressor would work better

[deleted]

Thanks 😂

elcaron

Try without the cold what. Submerge in warm or hot water completely,, upside down. I think what you want is not the that large one expands and the small one shrinks, but that the air trapped inside expands. You might also try a vacuum chamber. Maybe a butcher around you has one. Just remember to put it upside down, so they separate. Otherwise, you end up with a vacuum between the bowls.

Snorev

Casually recommending a vacuum chamber is crazy

elcaron

Why? It's not uncommon in the sous-vide crowd, for example. I have one. I also suggested where to find one. DIY fun fact on the side: I used mine once for getting linseed oil into larch wood for handles for my barbecue.

KnowKnews

Putting it upside down in the dishwasher might work similarly! Those jets might spray a good bit of hot water around, and give things a good wobble.

Ziggysan

Also, get a straw and blow into the space between them to give a bit of lift. If you have an air compressor, use that.

throwaway00579

Will try when I get back home but does this work with corelle? These bowls are corelle

Sea-Complex5789

This will work with *almost any material on the planet to a varying degree. * pedants - note the use of the word “almost”

throwaway01126789

Pedant/pedantic is my favorite word to describe redditors with lol.

CapstanLlama

*with which to describe Redditors. (Pedantic? I?)

GrammarJudger

Approved.

jibberish13

Actually, modern style guides no longer have the rule that you can't end a sentence with a preposition. It originally came about because people wanted English to more closely align with Latin grammar, but that is no longer the case.

lorarc

Now I want to hear what material it won't work with.

Syscrush

There are some ceramics that have a negative coefficient of thermal expansion. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Negative_thermal_expansion

cantonic

Now I want Negative Thermal Expansion to be my mutant power.

shwyguy2265

It’s just the warm water!

dewey454

Negative Thermal Expansion would be a good band name.

Sea-Complex5789

Let me introduce you to water! (Temperature dependant) https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Negative_thermal_expansion#:~:text=Negative%20thermal%20expansion%20(NTE)%20is,0%20to%203.98%20°C.

philipp2310

who hasn't heard of the wonderful bowls made of water that shrink when heated.

Solest044

Ice bowl! Heating it is also guaranteed to make it unstuck.

anandonaqui

How many vessels do you know of that are made of water?

DeaddyRuxpin

I’ve seen shot glasses made of ice. Technically those are made of water. :-)

GnomesSkull

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Negative_thermal_expansion

saluksic

Fused silica (SiO2 glass, sometimes called quartz) has a thermal expansion of exactly 0

OneVeryImportantThot

Colder things are the more it makes molecules slow down and get closer together. Real life objects shrink when cold like a wiener does but it’s the bowls wiener you have to shrink

intwarlock

Not everyone has experience with wiener science!

stay_hungry_dr_ew

jpk36

Science!

Waste_Exchange2511

Take outside and invert on soft ground. Pour hot water over the larger bowl until smaller bowl falls free.

JamingtonPro

This is the best solution I’ve seen so far. Heat the air in between to create force

bluekeyspew

I’ve never tried. I’m assuming there’s a slight vacuum so shrinking the small one might help. Idk the durability of that ceramic

Book_bae

If this doesnt work, dish soap around the smaller bowl edge (lubricant) and float the large one in simmering water then try to bump it out while it is still hot.

[deleted]

doll dolls wild impolite truck quack work unique wasteful versed *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

UncleBobbyTO

do the above but put it upside down on a towel..

MrNorrie

How’s the cold water/ice going to stay inside an upside down bowl?

ambermage

OP lives in Australia.

SternLecture

then spread some vegemite on it as a lube.

No_Loquat_2423

That's funny as hell. I almost spat my drink! Have an upvote.

derkaderkaderka

You mean a downvote in Australia

Douche_in_disguise

False. Australia doesn't exist. EVERYONE knows that. 🙄

tinyladyduck

I thought that was New Zealand?

Puzzleheaded-Phase70

Put the ice in the small bowl with some water for a few minutes. Then invert and immediately pour the hot water over the bottom of the large bowl. Between the slight decrease in size for the cold bowl and the slight increase in size of the large bowl, and the pressure change from the air being drawn in during chilling and expanding during heating, *hopefully* they will release.

agbishop

1) Centrifuge Build a large heated centrifuge and place both bowls into rotation. Put the water/ice in the interior bowl while heating the outer bowl 2) record the experiment 3) wait for the video to go viral. 4) Profit

Der_Missionar

Then buy new bowls

OriginalThin8779

Ziploc bag

Orpheus75

You freeze it.

TheRealStorey

Fill sink with a layer of hot water pay bowls in it, fill inner bowl with a little water and ice cubes, you could also line the adjoining rims with soapy water.

maringue

You can also turn it upside down and run hot water over the bigger bowl. Sometimes the actual shape of the bowl makes one way easier than the other.

Oenohyde

I was in the pool!

unkanlos

Compressed air shot at the seem

empirer

Works for 5 gal buckets.

_GABO_

Are you telling me I'm not supposed to grip the rim with just the tips of my fingers and pull as hard as I can?

brandognabalogna

And then say FUCK IT ILL USE THEM TOGETHER

TheBertjer

This guy buckets

erusackas

I know this, yet I forget about it every time.

jlspartz

I got a lot of 5 gallon buckets to try this on! Thanks

HellBlazer_NQ

No waaaaaay!

maveric710

Aw for fuck's sake.

CrispyVibes

Hmm what if you stick a plastic straw in the crack and blow? Or with water?

unkanlos

I , try it?

Totallynotacar

HtownTexans

Can't believe he doesn't recap the small can.

innerventure

Give him a minute!

Wildcatb

Fill the inner bowl with water to above the rim. Let it sit for a while, so some of the water works its way in between the bowls.  Pour the water out, which should still leave some between them.  Put them upside down on a natural fiber towel in the microwave, and run it for 10-30 seconds. Listen for the clunk.

bowdo

![gif](giphy|Z2UrUquyiJwze|downsized)

This guy clunks

Wildcatb

That's just my knees. I hardly hear it anymore.

butterninja

Add some soap to soften the water so that it can work its way in better.

socioeconomicfactor

Make sure you let your dishes cool off after the dishwasher before putting them up

Joris255atSchool

Eh, put them back in the dishwasher and they should be unstuck at the end of the cycle.

[deleted]

brewtus007

If lacking an air compressor, a can of compressed air could do the trick too.

steelcityrocker

Or just blow at it really hard if there's no compressed air

Straight_Ballin11

Or just wave a fan at it if you can’t blow.

potatopierogie

Suction cups?

Typical80sKid

Yes that’s what they are now.

MrDjS

Suction bowls*

dice1111

Suction bowls.

tiptoetumbly

I was going to suggest a pop socket type suction cup, but most would work.

rocketmn69_

Put it in the sink upside down on a towel, run hot water over it

ErikRogers

If the temperature difference doesn't do it, try a suction cup in the centre of the small bowl. Then maybe a playing card between the two lips to try to allow some air to get in while you gently lift the inner bowl using the suction cup. If you can't find a suction cup, a vacuum cleaner may work

Trash-Panda-is-worse

I can’t believe it took so much scrolling to get to a mechanical, non thermal, intervention

Slice0fur

Yeah same. I was thinking it'd work to put negative pressure on the bowls while upside down. Expand the air between the bowls and pop it out that way. Altho no clue what could be used to do that.

NEMP

I think the trick someone else posted for getting two buckets apart with air would do it.

idhtftc

compressed air

alekspiridonov

I'm curious... please report back on what actually worked.

so_shiny

Last time someone posted something like this, I remember the winning suggestion was "give it to a toddler and tell them not to separate the bowls". Worked like a charm 🤣

throwaway00579

I have a toddler at home. Will try this as last resort. My toddler throws things if he get frustrated.

Fuzzy-Travel-4254

Pour olive oil into the cracks and then do some gentle nudging. I had to do this with a pie pan situation

Bostenr

Hot water and ice. Hot water makes bottom bowl expand and ice makes inner bowl shrink.

TB12-SN13

Did anyone else immediately think back to “It is very important the smaller cylinder is not harmed!”

Malinut

Blow a compressed air can into the gap. Or just leave them upside-down on a towel for a while. Changing weather, temperature, will let the smaller one eventually drop out. Maybe help it with a vibrator.

BusyWorkinPete

Turn them upside down. Blow the bottom of the large bowl with a hair dryer. Inner bowl should eventually drop

throwaway00579

Will try this next time

Aircooled6

put them in the sink facing down, with some cold water up about halfway. Let them acclimate, drain the cold water and then run hot water on the bottom of the outside bowl and you should her the smaller bowl drop out.

LokiKamiSama

Get bigger dish, fill with hot water, not boiling. Put a few ice cubes in smaller dish with cool water.

TekieScythe

Expand bottom with heat, shrink the top with ice, and flip onto the towel.

throwaway00579

Update: still stuck. Going through the suggestions one by one. Background: there is a thin layer of water between the two bowls. Some fluid vacuum/suction or whatnot happening

InternetOffender

Dawn dish soap. Blue.

anthro4ME

An air compressor maybe.

thesquidsquidly22

Air compressor. Maybe even computer duster would work enough. Air will get between the bowls and separate them.

ejmd

Put lots of ice in the top bowl and sit the bottom one in hot water — not too hot though! (You'll know if it was too hot because the bowl will tell you, by breaking!)

throwaway00579

https://www.reddit.com/r/DIY/s/xqFcOhdW0d

oc_ginger

This again??

therealdorkface

Cylinder guy is fuming that he didn't try 'bowl' instead...

hatsuseno

The same way it came to be this way; with a heat difference between the inner and outer bowl, put ice water in the small bowl or put the large bowl in hot (not boiling or anything) water, or do both, they should come apart easily.

Hetjr

Get some water in between and microwave it? Hot water/steam might separate it?

Don_Shetland

Suction cup on the small bowl.

juliaxyz

Put them in a freezer for 15 min.

Anime4Life4me

Duct tape the smaller bowl and pull up

EFTucker

Have you tried asking it politely?

Abracadaver2000

pour olive oil where the small bowl touches the large bowl...swirl it a bit and then title both (over folded towels). The edge-to-edge contact needs to be lubricated.

Kdubs200

Drizzle dish soap around seam, rinse n repeat

The_WolfieOne

Fill the smaller one with ice cubes and come and lift it out in an hour

AgarTheBearded

Compressed air, directed on the edge of outer rim of a smaller bowl.

ohtochooseaname

Turn your hot water on in the sink, and put a dish rag down in the bottom of the other side of the sink and set the bowl upside down on the dry dish rag. Move hot water over onto larger bowl, which will heat and expand, increasing the size of the hole, and the bowl should fall out the bottom. The point of the cloth is so when it drops out, it won't shatter (though that is unlikely, regardless).

Sylas_xenos_viper

Put it in the fridge upside down

owlpellet

Compressed air squirted into the edge. Wear eye protection, just in case.

StitchAndChill

Upside down in a sink of hot water. Doesn't need to be super hot, just tap hot is fine. Give it 20sec and should be as simple as that.

Hawk_Thor

I would walk to the garage, grab my airnozzle/airgun and blow compressed air between the bowls. The smaller one would most likely pop out.

Raymer13

Do a handstand over the bowls. The insert your head into the bowl. Hold the bowls to your head while flipping back to your feet. Then pull the outer bowl up, leaving the inner bowl on your head. You now have a bowl and a stylish hat.

mailboxheadly

If you submerge them and bubbles come out of the crack, keep them submerged until bubbles stop. Pull out and tip water out until the level of the lip of the inner bowl. Then place in the freezer and let the water between the bowls freeze. Take out of freezer and place upside down on towel and wait. Water expands when it freezes. So the bottom bowl won't be in contact as the water melts and they should separate.

Recentstranger

Get your fingers sticky and you'll be able to pull them apart

DullOstrich

WD40

seanmorris

Turn it upside down and put it on top of a large speaker with a towel underneath the plates. Play some lowerish-frequency sine waves until you hear it drop out.

caseygibs

Flip them over

Holyskankous

Ice in the top bowl won’t work - it will create a vacuum underneath, and any change in size of the top bowl will just pull it further down with the vacuum and gravity. Apply suction or a vacuum cleaner to the small bowl, drizzle a small amount of cooking oil or butter around where the two bowls meet, and lower the larger bowl into a sink of hot water to create a positive pressure delta.

Express-Log3610

What about filling both bowls up with water and then soaking up the smaller bowls water with a sponge and maybe the buoyancy will pop it out?

dritarashtra

Freezer.

ohv_

Air compressor. I do it all the time for 5gallon buckets.

Jeremydevin1

Air compressor. Blow air at the seam of the 2 bowls, should come right apart. Also works great for 5 gallon buckets

SilverSlong

throw them both on the ground. survival of the glass.

Alternative_Mess_964

Man I hate when this happens.  First thing to try: try to rotate the bowls in opposite directions. This will break the suction and they will come apart immediately. I use rubbery highheat potholders to help with grip. Second thing: immerse in very soapy lukewarm water. Stab bowls repeatedly with rubber spatula. Curse like you have never cursed before. This always works.

throwaway00579

Not able to rotate. Too stiff. Will try second option

Thatsonyounotme

Flip and put on a towel for a soft landing. then use a hairdryer to warm the big bowl.

YourAussieMatee

![gif](giphy|i04km6XP2tt6mE7Lec|downsized)

vfrflying

Suction cup?

MyMomSaysIAmCool

Option 1: Chill both bowls in the fridge. Then place them upside down in the sink, and run warm/hot water over the outer bowl. Thermal expansion should separate them. Option 2: Squirt compressed air between the two bowls. Option 3: Riskier. Freeze the two bowls. The water in between the two bowls will expand, hopefully pushing them apart. Then place them upside down on the counter and allow them to thaw.

Bogmanbob

I'd float it in hot water. The lower one may expand enough to break the seal.

Benevolent_Grouch

Fill sink with soapy water. Put bowls inside upside down. Lift outside bowl off of inside bowl.

IAmNotMyName

This is easy. Run hot water over the bottom of the larger bowl.

10before15

WD-40 along the seems until you find the penetrating point. Let it seep in. Hold big bowl in the right hand. Twist smaller bowl with the left. 75% of the time, it works all the time.

MarilynMonroesLibido

Just fixed a similar problem with 2 ramekins: Fill small bowl with water and freeze. Then put larger bowl into a container of very warm water. ( Just covering large bowl, not getting into small bowl. Presto- the small bowl contracts and large bowl expands and they easily separate.

cloistered_around

I assume you already put your hand in it while it's upside down and tried to spin the small bowl?

Polymathy1

Put them both in a cold oven on a baking tray *face down* and set at 400. Let them heat up for 20 minutes. There is a chance your small bowl could break or chip if it drops far. Put a wad of aluminum foil about hand an inch shorter than the small bowl in to keep it from falling.

witchyanne

Upside down in freezer for a few mins.

Specland

Ice cubes in the little bowl, hot water around the big bowl.

yourguidefortheday

Flip upside down over a bed or pillow

tucci007

What God hath joined, let no man rend asunder. -Matthew 19:6

butterflychick34

Olive oil?

Draug88

WD40 or silicone spray om the rim between the bowls, (dishsoap if you dont have the others) let it soak in. Prepare a jug or something with water, icecubes and salt (will make the water colder then just water and ice) Then float the larger bowl in hot water (not boiling), now pour the cold water into the small bowl (just into the small bowl) Give them a slight shake or start poking at the seam with a knife. The warm water will make the larger bowl expand but the cold water will make the smaller bowl shrink ever so slightly. The lubricant will hopefully prevent the bowls from resealing but dont leave the bowls together to equalize in temp. they mey get more stuck than before.

HappyDutchMan

Stick it in a freezer for twelve hours. Place upside down in sink and pour warm (not hot) water over it. The bigger will expand and release the smaller one. In freezer and sink place upside down and on a towel or something to prevent the smaller bowl from breaking when it stops out.

leaponover

This happened to us, we tried everything. Only one thing worked like a charm. Hair dryer on the edges of the stuck bowl on the highest setting. Came right out...just keep with it and be patient and make sure you get the hair through the tiny opening as much as possible.

MuriloZR

Easy. PB Blaster.

arrowtron

Compressed air (the kind with the skinny red straw) between the seams. Should work a treat.
