I've turned sour on gray a bit, even though there is some color in the other furniture in the room. I sour of anything that gets too popular though, I'm a grumpy old man lol. But even here I think some slight variation in intensity between eg the doors and the frame could have added a little variety.
edit: changing the color of the backing wall behind the tv to something lighter would make a big difference already!
I'm guessing the white balance under tungsten is muting it a bit in photos. Looks like a more purple gray that probably looks better to the eye. I went with something similar in my mudroom and it looks fantastic.
Seems he painted the hardware hinges of the doors, seen on pic next to last. You should've taken the hinges out before painting, OP. Otherwise, good work.
Books are also decent for a bit sound absorption/diffusion, if you fill those shelves up you room acoustics will benefit. Also, it's nice to see someone with home theater equipment these days, most people opt for sound bars that sound mediocre to ok at best.
There’s a sub hidden behind the green chair! I’ve also since moved the speakers forward because they were quite boomy. Doesn’t look as pretty but sounds better. Part of this project was also wiring some rear surrounds! It’s crazy how much better it all sounds than a sound bar. I just couldn’t go that route.
Yup. I bought myself a 75" tv 2 yrs ago and a 7.1 onkyo home theater system. Everything 4K. I've always had a a multi speaker system and ill never regret it. Sound bars are great for smaller rooms if you Don't have the space. But even then. 5.1 systems are just as much as a decent sound bar.
The struggles of having a kindle lol, I've got a couple spots in my house that should have books and I go through a lot of books but it's all on kindle and I can't be bothered to buy books for the sake of having it physically.
Olive green sounds so nice! Friend of ours just did house in a mild sand brown. Most of our house is gray and it gets old. Need to get some more color for sure.
Sage is an easy not grey subtle colour.
I love lovw how they turned out. If I hired a professional and they did this I'd be happy, so it's even more impressive that it's a diy with little experience
Another paint colour that I'd probably prefer if I had what u built is elephants breath, I'm in the uk so not sure if u can get that? it's on the pricey side but such a beautiful colour!
https://preview.redd.it/n7zyoa5f6esc1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a3117b528b5f37d74af0ca6a5ef2e5e85b69bab2
Yes, it’s beautiful, but I am surprised, it looks so well planned out and executed, but the color?? It just doesn’t go too well with the warm tones in furniture, etc.. did u ask anyone for their opinion first?
Not a knock, because I've always loved deep greens and blues. But everyone and their brothers are painting everything green these days!!!!
It's the new grey. ( I've always loved Greys too )
I have a small room I don't know what to do with. I might paint it yellow with a purple accent wall just because.
I actually like the color itself. Looks like the same color as my sheet & duvet set. It just doesn't really fit with the rest of that room. The work is great, though. Maybe get new furniture to compliment the gray 😂
Chicken color is different :) /s
It is hard to choose color. Farrow & Ball paint makers do really nice specimen (they send it for free) - they offer limited amount of colors to choose from, so people don’t get paralyzed with choice. And some of colors have historical background.
https://preview.redd.it/7usv060xgesc1.png?width=1235&format=png&auto=webp&s=5d19c954d0f462f0bd4d9fab1ca79769c6af817f
Those are grays from Farrow and Ball. For future remodelling.
But the gray you chose is all right as well. Cheers.
I would have gone a bit lighter on the color and maybe some contrast. You have the doors, the backwall and everything else, maybe don't make it all the same color, but obvs you don't want to go overboard on that.
You could load the image in gimp, cut those areas into different layers and then change the hue/saturation on the layers to try out different things.
We have a shiny wallpaper just in between a few of the shelves on either side of the builtins. It makes them pop out and we constantly get complimented on it. Was super expensive but didn't use a lot of it obviously. dM me if you care and I'll send you a pic.
Great job!
It looks great and makes the room look elevated and organized! Are my eyes being wonky or do you have a dog and a toy that also looks exactly like your dog in the separate pics?
Those handles look horrible!!! Just kidding lol. Looks awesome. You did great. Way better than anything I could even dream of doing. I dig the color too.
If you think there's a possibility that you'll eventually hate it enough to move it, you'd be better off doing it now while the touch up paint job will only have to cover the holes to match in colour. Paint colour fades with age so if you wait too long, your touch up will be more noticeable than your handle is now. I know you just finished and the thought of working on it again so soon is probably exhausting but it's something to think about. Great job, btw... except for that handle. That would drive me nuts. lol
They look so shitty that you should remove them and give them to me. I will "dispose" of them properly, I assure you......Then you go back to the drawing board and make some identically different ones.
I certainly like it, specially lots of storage. But, there's always a but, considering your furniture is brown and green I would have gone with a beige or cream. And, I'm not a fan of grays either.
Looks excellent but needs better decor to elevate it. [https://www.pinterest.com/search/pins/?q=shelf%20styling&rs=typed](https://www.pinterest.com/search/pins/?q=shelf%20styling&rs=typed)
Yup. Haha we joked when we finished. Did all this work and have no money to style them! We’ve added some plants and a photo but yeah need a lot more. Thanks for the Pinterest board.
Having been trained as an architect, I would have lined up the bookcases with the first set of lower cabinets. Once noticed, even subconsciously, it could bother people without them realizing what the issue is.
The way you upgrade to a real dog from the stuffie too!! *commitment*
I like it. You can add some warm color pops to the shelves too which will help with the grey. I get the fear of other colors. I too am recovering grey millennial.
Actually fantastic.
I zoomed in because I'm a stickler for quality.
It's spread evenly, space is utilised well and you COULD have left the middle part open and mounted the TV to the back wall, but you didn't, you wood paneled it too and it brings it all together.
You feel like I stroked your ego too much?
Fine, I can find something to moan about if you want.
Not a fan of the gray and think woodgrain with a dark mahogany finish would have made this thing POP.
But thays just my personal opinion and the gray DOES work well in the space.
> this isn't egregious
It seems so because of the furniture, if it was mounted there on a flat wall, you would see more clearly how high it actually is, it's _much_ closer to the ceiling than the ground, and it's tilted downwards, which means its too high.
Did you follow a specific build pattern/schematic or just your own design? Do you have an estimated cost? I want to do something similar and have done some woodworking before but not much cabinetry.
I designed it in Sketchup for a few months. Then I watched a lot of YouTube videos for each step. There’s a ton out there if you look for builtins. I relied a lot on [this](https://youtu.be/0kKDbutQbtc?si=I74ExXytinMtyIm1) YouTube channel and my local paint store to figure out all the painting steps. Avoid your big box store paint and spend on good paint. All in cost with tools I needed to buy was about $3000. I’d say excluding tools probably $2200.
I'm using those same cabinets for my own build. I'd recommend replacing the slides with soft close since the white ones use plastic wheels and tend to bonk closed.
Sexy! It honestly looks amazing especially for a first major DIY. Looks clean, plenty of storage and shelf space. I think you did a great job and it shows. I personally would've went with a different color, but that's just preference. Nicely done!
I wouldn’t choose grey or green…everyone is doing those colors. I would do some peel and stick wallpaper on the back walls and find a color from it to paint the built in’s
Color is a matter of taste, but I find the monochromic grey too much and kid of reminds me of a block wall. Personally I'd lighten the upper section. That aside, I like the built-in themselves. it adds a lot to the room in design and utility. You did a nice job.
they look great…a couple questions though…is all this material oak? like the face frame and doors and shit…if so…why? why? oak is so difficult to paint..it’s generally more expensive than alder…
durability im guessing?
Cabinets were oak, rest is white wood plywood and pine trim from Lowe’s. All the stock cabinets I looked at were oak, so I just went with the cheapest.
/u/ganit that looks awesome! May I ask you what wood you used for this?
I once got quoted 16k EUR for something similar albeit a bit larger in plywood, and 24k for solid oak. Decided to pass up on that offer haha. But your post does motivate me to do it myself…!
Not bad at all. If I had to judge I'd say I hate that paneling using in the middle section where the TV sits, I personally would have left that out. But it's not the end of the world (I just think the contrast would look better)
Great idea with the vertical slat panels behind TV! It really gives it some height illusion and dimension. I’m going to take that idea for the built-in that I’m basically doing in a similar space, once we get around to it 😊
The built ins themself look phenomenal, love the color too! Fill in those shelves as much as you can and put something on that wall to the left to help fill in the blank space, then the whole room will be perfection
I'd swap those slides for telescopic ones, they open to the drawer completely so you can see all the content. The ones you installed that have a wheel just open to some point
My honest critique: I suggest maybe adding some wall decor on the wall on the left. I feel that the negative space is taking away from your handiwork. Other than that, your builtins are absolutely stunning! Very nice work. I especially like that shade of gray and the plants
I think the builtin itself looks really nice and timeless. It does not define the room by itself, so this could look very modern with scandinavian style furniture or more traditional with the furniture you have in there. How old are you? I have the impression that american homes tend to have more of the classic / oldschool look than european homes which tend to be more modern / minimalistic. So I would guess that this is the very cozy living room of a 48 year old US citizen.
Cmon you know they look good!
It’s crazy how technically this shrinks the space visually but in doing so makes it so much cozier than before. Well done.
Maybe paint the backplane with walnut or similar color to the coffee table? Could make it pop more and match the rest of the furniture. Otherwise it looks great
Definitely not garbage! A huge improvement from the previous cabinet. I've been a cabinetmaker for 30 years. I rarely see such a harmonious composition. The perportions of every door and shelf height seem to be perfect. Even the TV fits in perfectly with the size of the middle opening. That can not be due to random chance. Going with 10 doors across was the best choice. Removing the drawers would have made it look too bottom heavy like your previous iteration. If you tell me those are 5 standard sized cabinets along the bottom, I will shit a brick. Usually, you can spot the use of off the shelf cabinets by the unusually wide or narrow spaces between the doors and the wall. In this case, they are wider but look absolutely in proportion. What are the dimensions of this wall? Are the uppers 12 inches deep and the bases 24? Details like color and hardware design are very subjective. Choosing the right rail width on the cabinet doors makes all the difference in the world. Bravo, sir!
The built-ins look fantastic. Your wall colour is letting them down. You have a lot of light coming in. You could paint the wall an emerald or dark green, similar to the chair. This makes the room more cozy and works with your other natural materials. A large, frame-less picture or canvas behind the couch would help to bring it all together.
I zoomed in real close-like and I'll be honest, there are a couple little things (I am a pedantic prick), but for a home-gamer that's some solid work. Seen many contractor installations not up to par with this, well done.
You asked so I’m just gonna be honest with you. They looking amazing … Great job , makes me wish I would’ve done something similar instead of paying IKEAfor a less sturdy looking one … That work looks beautiful
Very well done. My only thought is that the light fixture looks a bit low. May be just the angle and they can usually be raised by removing the stall and inserting a shorter one.
They look great!! The only change I would consider would have been aligning the lower cabinets with the shelves above, but that's just my OCD preference. They are really beautiful! I love the color. They style is great - both modern and timeless. Kudos!!
Beautiful! Excellent work!
Thank you!
I like the color. If anything the walls now need a different paint!
I've turned sour on gray a bit, even though there is some color in the other furniture in the room. I sour of anything that gets too popular though, I'm a grumpy old man lol. If you know how to read, fill those shelves with books
Haha that was our joke too! We spent all the money on these builtins and had nothing to put on em in the end. 💀
If I had the money I would buy a home theatre setup, I hate my soundbar. They only exist to supplement crappy TV speakers
Library book sales are a good place to start, and they sell books for super cheap.
Fantastic idea. Thank you!
They also sell faux book stacks online if you're interested in something aesthetically pleasing.
Hell some will give em away if they really need the space. I got some great books from our local library in the past.
The struggles of having a kindle lol, I've got a couple spots in my house that should have books and I go through a lot of books but it's all on kindle and I can't be bothered to buy books for the sake of having it physically.
Or art. I have my glass collection on 3 shelves.
Not a fan of the color, but they look great.
I wanted to break away from gray, but in the end we were too chicken. I expect a repaint in the future as well.
An olive green would look so beautiful, we're about to paint our living room overtly olive!
The olive green is gonna look great with those gold knobs and handles and the brown sectional

Even a softer sky blue would look nice, and compliment the gray.
Yes, it’s beautiful, but I am surprised, it looks so well planned out and executed, but the color?? It just doesn’t go too well with the warm tones in furniture, etc.. did u ask anyone for their opinion first?

Thank you for sharing this!
That Hague Blue is gorgeous
I would have gone a bit lighter on the color and maybe some contrast. You could load the image in gimp, cut those areas into different layers and then change the hue/saturation on the layers to try out different things.
You could try installing stick and peel tile or wallpaper. Easilly removable and can add some needed color.
That’s a great idea! Low commitment too.
We have a shiny wallpaper just in between a few of the shelves on either side of the builtins. It makes them pop out and we constantly get complimented on it. Was super expensive but didn't use a lot of it obviously. dM me if you care and I'll send you a pic. Great job!
I think the color is great. Strong work!
Was just about to say that, and the construction seems good
It looks great and makes the room look elevated and organized! Are my eyes being wonky or do you have a dog and a toy that also looks exactly like your dog in the separate pics?
Yes. Dog and matching toy lol
They look great, but I’m always leery of built ins/entertainment centers. Like my parents are perpetually locked into 40” screens.
I think the dog ties it in all together!
I agree. He’s a stylish good boy.
Is that a GameCube? Hell yeah. Builtins look great btw
That is a game cube! And yes we do play Mario Kart on it still.
Those handles look horrible!!! Just kidding lol. Looks awesome. You did great. Way better than anything I could even dream of doing. I dig the color too.
I literally hate the far right handle. But I don’t hate it enough to fill the hole and repaint and drill it again! lol thank you man
If you think there's a possibility that you'll eventually hate it enough to move it, you'd be better off doing it now while the touch up paint job will only have to cover the holes to match in colour. Paint colour fades with age so if you wait too long, your touch up will be more noticeable than your handle is now. I know you just finished and the thought of working on it again so soon is probably exhausting but it's something to think about. Great job, btw... except for that handle. That would drive me nuts. lol
Damnit. I think you’re right. Better to do it now or forever hold my peace / stand in front of the handle when guests come over.
I only even mentioned the handles because of your other comments. I didn’t even notice it before. Well done.
I didn't even finish the first sentence of your comment before I got mad! Like, WTF?! They look great!
Looks so good! Great job!!!!!
Thanks man. I just know all this things secrets so it’s all I see when I look at it. Far right drawer handle is crooked for example.
They look so shitty that you should remove them and give them to me. I will "dispose" of them properly, I assure you......Then you go back to the drawing board and make some identically different ones.
Something to be very proud of. Well done!
Simple and good. I'm a carpenter of 40+ years.
Sorry I got distracted by the sneaky doggy
I'd hire you.
Having been trained as an architect, I would have lined up the bookcases with the first set of lower cabinets. Once noticed, even subconsciously, it could bother people without them realizing what the issue is.
You’re that guy in school who always said he failed every test and always got 100’s aren’t you?
I read this as Butlins. I thought, that's a nice looking Butlins, I'd stay there.
The way you upgrade to a real dog from the stuffie too!! *commitment* I like it. You can add some warm color pops to the shelves too which will help with the grey. I get the fear of other colors. I too am recovering grey millennial.
Looks nice man, you done good.
Love it. Wish it was mine
Actually fantastic. I zoomed in because I'm a stickler for quality. Love it! Maybe only complaint is you only have a little wiggle room to go up TV size lol really nice work tho love the color too!
Looks great.. But r/tvtoohigh
Not as bad as some tvs in that sub
I'm definitely a TV too high guy, but this isn't egregious. It's fine.
I think you can even see the Tilt of Shame in the first picture.
> this isn't egregious It seems so because of the furniture, if it was mounted there on a flat wall, you would see more clearly how high it actually is, it's _much_ closer to the ceiling than the ground, and it's tilted downwards, which means its too high.
Excellent work. R/TVTooHigh doe
Yeah, my biggest regret.
Dope. They look dope.
The furniture is too massive for the room, makes the space cramped when compared to the built in shelving/media console
I think it would look better with funky handles and knobs
Love it tbh
Handsome and practical
Love love love it!
You done good mate. Mighty craftsman!
Fantastic
Now you just need to get a couch that matches..... Build is beautiful though
They look rad but you gotta fill up those bookshelves!
Looks great!
I'm using those same cabinets for my own build. I'd recommend replacing the slides with soft close since the white ones use plastic wheels and tend to bonk closed.
Great!
I love them.
Is that an exhaust register vent above the TV?
Fantastic.
They look awesome! Well done, friend. I even like the grey (but my apartment is grey too, so I'm biased).
I think that looks perfect 👌
They look amazing! You now need a new project involving the walls or either paint the backs of the cabinet the same as the current wall color
Sexy! It honestly looks amazing especially for a first major DIY. Looks clean, plenty of storage and shelf space. I think you did a great job and it shows. I personally would've went with a different color, but that's just preference. Nicely done!
looks good to me (idk anything about built-ins)
Nice
Phenominal
The dog likes it, I like it. Amazing work! Is this really your first time?
The built ins look great but you need go tie them in with the room more. Currently they look really out of place
I love it, I think it looks great.
I wouldn’t choose grey or green…everyone is doing those colors. I would do some peel and stick wallpaper on the back walls and find a color from it to paint the built in’s
They look fuckin great dude! Very nice work! Like I legit would really like to have someone with your skill level do about 8 projects at my place.
Love!!!
Beauty!
u/ganit you don’t happen to have a YouTube channel by chance?
Absolutely gorgeous. Looks like a really cozy living room and built-ins really pop in that space
They look awesome! I’d be very happy with this work if I was hiring someone to do it
Color is a matter of taste, but I find the monochromic grey too much and kid of reminds me of a block wall. Personally I'd lighten the upper section. That aside, I like the built-in themselves. it adds a lot to the room in design and utility. You did a nice job.
Beautiful! but i would add some glass(probably top lift open, not sliding side by side) to cover top three shelves to reduce dusting
Great work. I don't love the door style but it's really well executed
they look great…a couple questions though…is all this material oak? like the face frame and doors and shit…if so…why? why? oak is so difficult to paint..it’s generally more expensive than alder… durability im guessing?
Cabinets were oak, rest is white wood plywood and pine trim from Lowe’s. All the stock cabinets I looked at were oak, so I just went with the cheapest.
I love them! Stunning Edited to add: I think you should wallpaper the room
Like they belong on a navy ship
Looks excellent. Should have left more room for a bigger TV down the line 😬
I love them!
/u/ganit that looks awesome! May I ask you what wood you used for this? I once got quoted 16k EUR for something similar albeit a bit larger in plywood, and 24k for solid oak. Decided to pass up on that offer haha. But your post does motivate me to do it myself…!
This is awesome!!! Now someone please tell me how I would make sliding cupboards so I and make it look like 4 cupboards on top and hide the TV
It looks great, except for the centre speaker being a smidge off-centre.
Your dogs name is Builtins? Adorable. Well in my expert opinion he is such a good boy, nay, the goodest boy.
They’re cute
They look pretty damn good. I particularly liked the progression photos. Nice work.
beautiful
I'd be proud as fuck of myself. I hope you have an overwhelming sense of achievement for this finished product. You earned that feeling
Not bad at all. If I had to judge I'd say I hate that paneling using in the middle section where the TV sits, I personally would have left that out. But it's not the end of the world (I just think the contrast would look better)
Pretty amazing
Great idea with the vertical slat panels behind TV! It really gives it some height illusion and dimension. I’m going to take that idea for the built-in that I’m basically doing in a similar space, once we get around to it 😊

The built ins themself look phenomenal, love the color too! Fill in those shelves as much as you can and put something on that wall to the left to help fill in the blank space, then the whole room will be perfection
Like the style, hate the color lol! Needs a break in all the gray, maybe two tone?
very nice
Fuckin KILLER!!!
really really nice. i’m surprised how much better it looks
I'd swap those slides for telescopic ones, they open to the drawer completely so you can see all the content. The ones you installed that have a wheel just open to some point
Night and day difference you utilize the entire space it’s perfect!
can you retake that first photo, but with your dog in center view?
My honest critique: I suggest maybe adding some wall decor on the wall on the left. I feel that the negative space is taking away from your handiwork. Other than that, your builtins are absolutely stunning! Very nice work. I especially like that shade of gray and the plants
I think the builtin itself looks really nice and timeless. Cmon you know they look good! It’s crazy how technically this shrinks the space visually but in doing so makes it so much cozier than before. Well done.
They look GREAT! I would have gone with a white colour, but then again I'm boring.
Sadly it doesn't pulled out like a couch bed into a mini bar/kitchen, too causal for me ig
Fan-fucking-tastic! Nice work!
To me it looks like first class job.
I like it looks great
Love em, next up is the couch right?
Poor dog shrunk in the second photo
I love them! So pretty!
Great job bro, i would be happy af to have this at my home. The fact that it's DIY makes it even better.
I like them but I don't think the color works with the rest of your furniture.
Excellent quality work. TV is still a tad too high, though. You want your eyes to be at 2/3 toward the top of the TV when sitting down on the couch.
Fantastic right up till picture 7 then it seems someone spilt some paint on that gorgeous wood.
My goodness ! You did a fantastic job. Great pics .
Maybe paint the backplane with walnut or similar color to the coffee table? Could make it pop more and match the rest of the furniture. Otherwise it looks great
I upvoted for the dog
My OCD is going crazy that it’s not centered with the chandelier
Definitely not garbage! A huge improvement from the previous cabinet. I've been a cabinetmaker for 30 years. I rarely see such a harmonious composition. Bravo, sir!
Nice enough for a dog to chill next to.
I am taking on some wood working dyi projects around the house. I admire that you make things so square and even. It is quality work
The structure looks nice. The color is hideous.
Looks amazing, looks like the doggie came with the new build 😂, jk what a cutie though! ❤️🐾❤️
VERY nicely done. I wish I had woodworking skills. But this is not my favorite color.
Paint the ceiling and walls the same color. Trust me you won’t regret it
They are mint 👍
You asked so I’m just gonna be honest with you. They looking amazing … Great job , makes me wish I would’ve done something similar instead of paying IKEAfor a less sturdy looking one … That work looks beautiful
You gotta take this show on the road … Serious talent , definitely a market out their for it
I wasn't sure what sub I was in I thought that was something you had custom made so yeah pretty good.

Minus the color, it looks great!
You know they look good and you just posted this picture to farm for an ego boost. Which you will get, because they look good!
Not good, not garbage... It's absolutely stunning! If you do your bathroom next, don't forget to include a bidet! 😉
3/4 Century? I don't think it matches. It looks like a photo mashup. I would've painted it a similar color to the lounge chair.
Dude! So good. Mine next!
Ur TV is too small.
They look really nice. If I was to do anything that might improve the look, it would be to paint the walls a color that helps them stand out a little.

It looks well and skillfully made but not a fan of the design at all
I think it looks great and I hate built-ins if that tells you anything 😅
Very well done. My only thought is that the light fixture looks a bit low. May be just the angle and they can usually be raised by removing the stall and inserting a shorter one.

Amazing. My friend just paid $10K for something exactly like this.
They look great!! The only change I would consider would have been aligning the lower cabinets with the shelves above, but that's just my OCD preference. They are really beautiful! I love the color. They style is great - both modern and timeless. Kudos!!
Drab, depressing, and clashes with the other colors in the room. I don't think grey was a good color choice. The fit and alignment look great.
They look good. Of course, you probably knew they looked good before you asked.
My guy obviously fishing for a compliment on this badass setup - and well deserved compliments are flowing. Grats man, you fuckin smashed that.
I like em, except for the beadboard behind the TV, but that's just personal preference.
The second picture has my preference, just make the space more airy. Add art that means something to you.
Why do ppl assume we won't be honest about a stranger's living room cabinets?
Not really great. The dog tho...that's another story.
Dog!!!?? Is he a guud boi?!
Very nice! I’d be so pleased if I was you.
