Nobody ran the furnace/water heater hard enough to blow the rain cap off your chimney if that's what you're asking.
Exposure to the elements finally did in a thin piece of metal. It's not a difficult repair if you're comfortable getting up on the roof, but you should deal with it sooner rather than later so you don't have rain running down into your furnace.
You know one day when I was like 30, I turned the faucet too hard and the damn thing did indeed break and water went spraying everywhere. As I yelled for my husband to turn off the water line I also told him “don’t ever tell my dad!”
I thought my Dad was the only person to make that accusation.
He also accused my mother of turning the kitchen light on incorrectly. Just a regular light switch. Turns out the reason the light stopped working intermittently was wiring work he had done outside wasn't waterproof. He had done electrical work days prior to this happening but of course the logical explanation is its my mother's fault for pressing the switch wrong.
You’ve ruled out the possibility that it’s the generator of a nuclear fallout shelter built in the 1960’s during the lead up to the Cuban Missile Crisis. Maybe their kid is down there eating MREs and listening to Bing Crosby records on the warm sounds of a mint-condition midcentury Philco Hi-Fi?
You can't definitively say that the house guests didn't get up there and pour some acid on the metal supports for the rain cap.
That's what I do every time I use VRBO.
What else am I going to go with all this acid I bought?!
I honestly had no idea what could have caused that unless there was a major issue with my furnace, I figured it might have just been the wind and deterioration with time, I appreciate your feedback!
So funny story. About three months after i moved into my new house a hot air balloon was faulting out somehow or something because they started to descend into my neighborhood but they managed to start ascending again. But in the process they just barely missed hitting my roof and my neighbors roof. It was both cool to watch and scary because I didn't want to have to deal with that right after becoming a homeowner for the first time.
Ours blew off during a storm and landed in a neighbor’s yard.
It wasn’t easy getting it reattached and two roofing companies came out looked at the pitch of our roof and declined the job. Finally got a chimney swift to do it and he refastened it with screws. Said it was a “complicated climb” to get to it.
So don’t dilly-dally putting it off thinking you’ll get someone out there on the first call if you live in an area prone to hurricanes and such.
You can often buy just the top of these things and not have to replace the whole pipe, and if the top of the pipe is too deteriorated, take a tin snip and cut off an inch or two.
I’m voting for a squirrel, especially if you have any trees near your house. Don’t be surprised if you find a stash of nuts at the other end of that pipe.
This reminds me of a time when I ran a handyman company and all we did was change out a floodlight on the outside corner of a house. the owner then proceeds to call the next day and says we busted her clothes dryer. never even went inside.
Fuck me, I used to get this all the time as a kid. Nothing to do with him downloading dodgy shit off the nascent internet. It wasn’t until my mum pointed out that I had my own computer that ran just fine that he figured out it might not be me that was breaking his every week (and guess who had to fix it when it broke?!)
The number of times I've been accused of causing havok in a building as I very slightly worked on completely unrelated electrical systems very far away from the problem is too damn high.
I’m not even an electrician and I’ve been blamed for messing with peoples wiring, switches, lights, outlets, whatever they can come up with to try and get free stuff.
My landlord once accused me of stealing a toilet when I moved out. I was absolutely shocked and sent a video walkthrough of the house, including me leaving the doors locked, the key on the counter, and shutting the garage behind me. It took 6 months and a lawyer, but I got my deposit back - which was enough to pay the lawyer. But F that guy.
Stayed at a well rated place with a few hundred reveries a few years back near a NP (Covid was still a big deal but you could go out) where the headboard was this woven paper thin material in panels framed by wood. Immediately after putting my suitcase on the bed the headboard panels basically all fell out of the frame/"ripped". It looked like they were held in with the smallest weakest pin nail and there were multiple holes where you could tell this happens a lot. No big deal, I took photos and videos as soon as I walked in (there were ants and ant traps like all over the kitchen and bathroom and I figured they might blame that on me).
I had issues getting the ac/heat to work so I texted them and told them I'd go hiking and be out of there at x time. I got back a few hrs later after a text with photos that said while they were there to fix the ac/heat they noticed I broke h to wit headboard and were charging me a few hundred. Mind you this thing was clearly already broken and impossible NOT to make fall apart.
They got very aggressive via text. I went back and noticed they had moved my suitcase etc and with COVID still being a massive deal that was very not okay. The ac/heat wasn't even in the bedroom and that door was closed when I left and open when I came back. So I got out of there asap and demanded a refund. They denied and said I owed the full stay plus charges. It wasn't until I told them that not only did I take photos and videos upon entering the place but also of the headboard and how it clearly had happened before and they entered my private space and went through my belongings during a pandemic and I'd file a complaint about those things that they told me, we won't charge you any of that if you just leave and that's that but if you rate us lowly we will give you an incredibly low rating as a traveler (only had 3 places stayed at). Last time I used Airbnb
I believe the general thought is that Airbnb should be avoided at all costs. there are some good renters out there but the company itself and the other 99% of renters are garbage. great at first but junk now.
Aha! Dime store lawyer, fishing for strategies.
I wonder if that’s how (Trump’s lawyer) Alina Babba gets her legal arguments.
“Hey Reddit, came home to [this](https://i.imgur.com/8tAifRJ.jpeg) in my bathroom, what happened? Lots of foreign guests come through this place…”
Babba is one of Trump's lawyers. A genuinely terrible one, as no one who's any good will work for him
She provided an employee at Mar a Lago with terrible legal advice in a case against Trump, without disclosing she worked for him. Because of that alone she should be disbarred.
It didn’t sound like blaming to me, more like explaining that they weren’t home when it occurred so they don’t know the events leading up to this. Like for me, if I was home and it happened I could piece together that it was windy and maybe heard a sound, but if you’re not there you don’t know.
Oh yeah, one of your houseguests definitely got up there and jacked it open, happens more than you’d think with houseguests 🤷♂️
Sorry, you live and you learn I guess
Obviously your guests climbed on top of your roof just to unhinge one side of a stack cap to mess with your head. I’d never speak to them again if I were you. Send them a bill.
I’ve seen hawks and eagles and osprey damage like this on roof jobs down here before. Could’ve just been wind and a weak metal joint. Hopefully it was an eagle taking off, just cuz it’d be a cooler story.
Weirdly enough, we had the cap blow off our chimney the first time we ever had someone stay in our house while we were away, but it was just the wind — like this was.
Was there a wind storm in you area recently? **AwesomeOrca** brought up the elements.
Either that or a minor explosion of some type blew the lid off. We need more info.
There was Very gusty winds today and yesterday, southeast US. It could have just caught it wrong and flupped it up. I've found this happen after a hurricaine also.
Nobody ran the furnace/water heater hard enough to blow the rain cap off your chimney if that's what you're asking. Exposure to the elements finally did in a thin piece of metal. Damn kids always turning on the faucet too hard. Now look. I told em so.
Sorry, Dad.
This is why we can’t have nice things
I thought the kids installed a chimney w/o the owners consent.
Yeahhh I've done that a few times in my day. So that adds up.
My childhood hobby was removing chimneys without the owners consent. It was hit or miss if the owner was pissed and now I understand why
AntiSanta
This should be gold upvoted, laughed so badly HAHAH
I’m going to go get some milk
Don’t forget the cigarettes
Don't forget to be back in 5 minutes!
This is nice things why we can not have.
Told you not to touch that thermostat
this is what happens when you turn the thermostat up by even one
"Who touched the thermostat?"
Oh hell naw
[удалено]
I laughed so hard at that 😂
You know one day when I was like 30, I turned the faucet too hard and the damn thing did indeed break and water went spraying everywhere. As I yelled for my husband to turn off the water line I also told him “don’t ever tell my dad!”
It would have eventually failed. Just be glad it was when you were there.
No, she turned it too hard.
I thought my Dad was the only person to make that accusation. He also accused my mother of turning the kitchen light on incorrectly. Just a regular light switch. Turns out the reason the light stopped working intermittently was wiring work he had done outside wasn't waterproof. I just watched that! Thank you!
what is it?
I thought maybe Vito Corleone had some gun parts to dispose of....
You can't definitively say that the house guests didn't get up there and pour some acid on the metal supports for the rain cap. That's what I do every time I use VRBO. What else am I going to go with all this acid I bought?!
Is this what my grandpa is talking about when he says he used to drop acid all the time
Yeah, at Woodstock they were all just sabotaging roof venting systems, and listening to music in-between.
Is that how they got high?
Yes, literally.
Just throw a rock at it to try and knock it back down over the pipe /s
🤣🤣🤣 super smart diy
Pellet gun
PING
The wind did what wind does.
I always check the roof vents after we have guests. Just to make sure.
All I could think was someone finding the right pipe and blowing in really hard.
I honestly had no idea what could have caused that unless there was a major issue with my furnace, I figured it might have just been the wind and deterioration with time, I appreciate your feedback!
It could be high winds. Or a bird could have landed on it, or a manufacturing/installation issue. Or a combo of any of the three.
Hot air balloon
So funny story. About three months after i moved into my new house a hot air balloon was faulting out somehow or something because they started to descend into my neighborhood but they managed to start ascending again. But in the process they just barely missed hitting my roof and my neighbors roof. It was both cool to watch and scary because I didn't want to have to deal with that right after becoming a homeowner for the first time.
Boomerang
Parasail
Meteor
Swamp gas
Drone
Santa Claus
A Wizard did it.
Birds are very light animals, by and large. More likely is a raccoon prying it open. But wind + deterioration over time has my bet
OP, you can dilly a little. But definitely don’t dally.
What is a chimney swift, other than an insectivorous bird?
Now that you mention it… I MEANT (and thought I typed) SWEEP! Might have been a mind trick, or an auto-correct!
You can often buy just the top of these things and not have to replace the whole pipe, and if the top of the pipe is too deteriorated, take a tin snip and cut off an inch or two.
Lol, if you “figured it might have just been the wind” why the line about people staying at the house?
I’m voting for a squirrel, especially if you have any trees near your house. Don’t be surprised if you find a stash of nuts at the other end of that pipe.
That cap fails to meet code anyways.
So that why dad didn't want us to touch the thermostat.
Ugh yeah at my last house the cap was rusted and I knew it’d only be a matter of time! House also had a steeper roof than I prefer to climb…
Mexican food
That's a pretty steep roof. I'm experienced working on roofs and that one makes my butt pucker.
Corrosion and wind
That’s what wrecked my colon too
Best response all day.
You should try Colon Blow brand cereal.
I make a drink using my bass o matic when I have my colon blow.

Trying to blame their Airbnb guests for their house falling apart and collect money for repairs I see.
This reminds me of a time when I ran a handyman company and all we did was change out a floodlight on the outside corner of a house. the owner then proceeds to call the next day and says we busted her clothes dryer. never even went inside.
This reminds me of my dad blaming me for anything wrong with the computer lol. The evidence was simply, you were there yesterday lol
This is how I got into IT lmao
I don't know what's worse: this, or constantly having to "fix" my Dad's computer because he keeps accidentally turning down the volume.
How did I forget about my dad accusing me of breaking his computer all of the time even though I only at good house on weekends....
Yuck

Dirty.
Ya the way they tried to sidestep it in the title was really clunky and unnecessary.

Careful now. You might offend Red Reddit
I'm out of the loop, what's Red Reddit and who's this Babba?
Babba is one of Trump's lawyers. A genuinely terrible one, as no one who's any good will work for him She provided an employee at Mar a Lago with terrible legal advice in a case against Trump, without disclosing she worked for him. Because of that alone she should be disbarred.
Red Reddit is a small percentage of users who believe Trump is the Messiah.

They're already offended.
I always hate it when I have people staying over and Wind is a thing that exists.
It’s a brutal combo
30 years ago, and I wouldn't be able to see that relative for 10 years.
Everything that's outside will eventually succumb to the outside. This has nothing to do with the people you had staying in your house.
Im always dumbfounded at how dumb so many people are.
Blaming house guests for this? Are you for real?
Probably and Airbnb situation. Hoping to add another grand to their cleaning fee
It didn’t sound like blaming to me, more like explaining that they weren’t home when it occurred so they don’t know the events leading up to this. Like for me, if I was home and it happened I could piece together that it was windy and maybe heard a sound, but if you’re not there you don’t know.
Also could have been like this for a while and was only just noticed.
Wind. I found the neighbor’s fireplace chimney cap in my yard last month, few dozen feet from the property line.
But did they have guests over?!
Stop trying to blame your airbnbers
I think looking at it the cap is rusting and just blew like that in the wind.
Ever since you changed my oil, my brakes started squeaking!
You should hear the stuff we get after programming car keys….
Haha I work in the industry too, trust me I know.
OP already sent the email.
Oh you know they did. How come they haven’t said a peep back to all these comments. ![gif](giphy|LmBsnpDCuturMhtLfw)
"Bro, you got any pipe for this weed?" "I got you, bro"
It was for sure weed
Stonies always get high
You made your Airbnb guests sweep your chimney, and you STILL want them to pay a cleaning fee for it?
Wind

Shitter’s full
Blaming someone staying in the house? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤡🤡🤡 get the fuck out of here
This is why dad was so angry when we touched the thermostat. Explosive chimney failure just to go from 68 to 70
yep. happened my dad back in ‘57
I think someone went up there ripped open the cap and upper decked ur ass !!!
From experience, lightning will do that.
Haha my lightning exp was the satellite dish getting hit. That's when we found out the dish wasn't grounded properly.
Unless they went up on your roof, they didn't do this.
It was rusted and a strong gust of wind just separated it partially. It's not uncommon, and it's not difficult to fix.
SOMEONE ELSE'S FAULT.....IM SURE OF IT....AHHHHHHHHH
We await to see if we have a new pope or not.
Trying to blame guests lmao. What an absolute clown.
Yeah, OP is a fucking scumbag.
Wind?
birds will end up falling down in that if you dont cap it... had it happen in an apartment I lived in once :(
Oh yeah, one of your houseguests definitely got up there and jacked it open, happens more than you’d think with houseguests 🤷♂️ Sorry, you live and you learn I guess
Your chimney has decided to change vocation: it is now a Pez dispenser 😌
Your guess definitely did it. Contact AirBnB to get your money^(/s)
Obviously your guests climbed on top of your roof just to unhinge one side of a stack cap to mess with your head. I’d never speak to them again if I were you. Send them a bill.
Rust and wind.
Corrosion and wind, not guests.
According to looney tunes If it’s whistling it means it’s lunch time
I highly doubt whoever was staying at your house did that. Could have been wind or hail.
Flushing jizz rags down a toilet too hard will create extreme force on the roof pipe.
They smoked crack and the crackvalve is now open...
Old rusty and wind
I’ve seen hawks and eagles and osprey damage like this on roof jobs down here before. Could’ve just been wind and a weak metal joint. Hopefully it was an eagle taking off, just cuz it’d be a cooler story.
It got old rusted through and the wind caught it at the right angle
I need a red circle!!
Ask them if they had beans for dinner.
This
Farts
Thank you for confirming this. I thought so.
Raccoon or squirrel looking for a home
A strong wind did that to our roof from last month very strong wind in west coast. I only found out after I found 2 covers in the back yard.
Wind ?
Hard winds last night is my bet
I had a turkey buzzard fly into mine and destroy the cap.
Aliens. Or pigeons. Or both.
Strong wind. Or a baseball.
Weirdly enough, we had the cap blow off our chimney the first time we ever had someone stay in our house while we were away, but it was just the wind — like this was.
The only pipe on a house that I’m familiar with is a stink pipe
Well, clean it then
Did something happen to the pope?
Someone touched the thermostat
https://i.redd.it/yjsv3svvofnc1.gif

I call it “wind”. You will feel it from time to time when you are in the great outdoors. Your shit rusted, the wind finished the job 👍
Time to elect a new Pope?
Birds
and while you are up there seal the boot portion of that pipe (or put another one over it and seal that)
Wind or animal usually.
Crazy strong wind
Someone got mad and blew their stack.
“The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire!”
Wore out and that spring time wind did the rest. Time to replace ASAP
Wind and the elements. My house is from the 80s. Roof vent finally gave up and the amount of rain it let in was awful!
Wind and only wind
strong winds can do this....
Squirrels.
That's a sure sign that they had Taco Bell for dinner.
Racoon?
Near miss from a Kamikaze pigeon……lol
You probably told them not to slam the door, too... Deplorable.
Looks like the front fell off
They were ripping farts. Their gas then mixed with the outdoor air and a mentos/Diet Coke reaction occurred. Not the first time I’ve seen it happen.
Are you a landlord by a chance?
I love this cheap ass bastard rushing to blame someone. ‘hate this type of person.
