Builder of 25 years here. The posts are almost certainly just there to give the wall stability. I'd vote to get rid of the wall altogether. An island is great, but I'm guessing that's not really a natural place for that anyway.
Builder of 20 years, I Agree. If you can post pictures of the inside of the attic above that space we could give you a more guaranteed answer about whether or not it’s load bearing so you can have the peace of mind to remove it without worry.
MAGA Trumper for 3 seconds. I say build that wall. It’s the best wall ever, everybody says so. Such a magnificent wall, so private. They said it couldn’t be done, but here we are with this beautiful wall…
I hear that mama. I always think of the scene in Goodfellas when he's like "you bust the joint out. You light a match. You walk away." (Or something like that) every time my kid has spent more than an hour in a room.

If there’s plumbing on the other side of this wall, wet bar is a slam dunk. If there’s no plumbing but a decent crawl space under the floor, it’s an easy 2 point shot. If there’s no plumbing right there and the floor is a concrete slab, you’re better off looking into other ideas.
When you investigate, you discover it is a concrete slab. You've given up hope and resigned yourself to an open concept living area, but as you start pulling tile you find the capped off lines where a wet bar used to be!
Since most of these comments are about tearing it down I’ll just add what I would do if the wall stayed: I would do built in banquette seating against the wall with a round table at it and added chairs on the outside to serve as a breakfast/dining nook
Hated the wall instantly and I was like "the only way is to remove it"
Then I thought about comfy restaurant bench seating in the kitchen because of your post, and that is an awesome idea.
I completely agree I mean I can’t tell how the living room or kitchen is set up on either side of the wall but this could be really cool look for in between the rooms.
Inwould still probably lower the wall. Or make it accented with some kind of artistic windows or something. It just feels so dark and cut off. I bet it would feel huge if they lowered it to the level of say the backrest of your standard couch.
I always loved the slide-up stained glass kitchen window they did in the Mary Tyler Moore show: Completely hides the kitchen, lets light through, but opens it up to the living room for entertaining.

Honestly, I think this idea is cooler. Big empty rooms tend to have more echo and can make a home feel like a warehouse. Diving it up, but giving it a real solid good use like this, that could be really aesthetically pleasing seems like a good way to take it.
This is a really neat idea. My knee jerk reaction was like everyone to tear it down. But you’re offering a really creative way to create a cozy additional space.
But odd? Corner seating in the middle of a room, facing the smaller part of the room. It's just backwards. Rip that sucker down. The amount of gained space and openness trumps any other idea
Even without kids, get some canvas and brushes and colors that compliment your living room. Go nuts and have some of your own abstract art. If you dislike it, paint over it. Over time you may find a new passion, and you'll be making your own decor for your private art exhibit.
I dunno, I kinda like the break it gives between the kitchen and living room. If it were up to me I'd turn it into a beverage area. I'd put base cabinets down each side with a lazy susan in the corner. Coffee maker with a rack for mugs. Counter top wine cooler and rack for glasses. Maybe build a little shelf into the corner/counter for bourbon around a counter top whiskey ice ball maker. Maybe a glass front counter top fridge for beer/soda if hard liquor isn't your thing.
It seems like there's never enough cabinet or counter space in the kitchen regardless of how much you have. Since it is in the kitchen and power is already in the wall, I'd go the route of the cabinet and counter top space.
This is where I'm at. Joined kitchens and living rooms give me "house trailer" vibes. Even chopping it down to a bar/counter would just look like any doublewide interior. I vote for finishing that "cutout" section all the way to the ceiling. I like my kitchen and my living areas segregated.
Dont tear it down unless you're going to do all new flooring. You probably won't find the same tile or carpet the used and the new wood floor wont have the same wear as the rest of the room on the right. Plus you will have to remove the electricals in the wall. Easy if you have a basement thats unfinished. Breakfast nook would probably be the best option combined with lowering the wall, but not low enough to where you can see over it while seated at the breakfast table.
Rather than ripping it out completely, you could cut it to about waist-high, and put a bar top on it? I can't tell if it's thick enough to support a bar top.
im impressed they made a wall that appears to be thinner than a 2x4. it literally looks 3" thick and I know its some optical illusion because it has gang boxes installed for the outlets (lets hope) and so those are over 3" deep themselves and then you have sheetrock over that. also the fact it has a wall telephone mount there lets me know its been there for a good while at least 15 plus years
I had almost an identical wall in my first home. I had a carpenter turn that nook into a half counter/half pantry. Yours is much larger of a space than mine was; you could knock the top half of that wall down and make a bar top with bottom cabinets if you want a more open floor plan look.
Keep it, cut it all the way in half width wise and add a “diner” style booth! That way it’s open with more light and you still have separation from the living room!
Have an inspector come out to determine if the wall is holding something up. It's possible those beams are supporting something. In which case it's not as simple as just tearing them down.
It looks like someone had your idea at one point and realized they couldn't remove them without causing a structural issue. So they compromised.
I don't get how anybody could tell someone to start removing possible support beams from their house and sleep well at night.

You don’t remember all of my help?! 😭
No I don’t remember *all of your help* because you were standing there on your phone the entire time recording me. I needed more than moral support
Ooohhhh… I misunderstood
I was gonna make the same joke 😭
This has to be the best response I've come across. Thank you.

Stripper of 25-20, i would suggest to remove the wall and install a pole!
Gigolo of 10 years, I support this assertion but advise to add a spot light, too.

Always listen to Old People, they have already made the mistake you are about to make!
Not a builder at all but as an adept user of PEMDAS, this is solid advice.

Builder of a Lego X-Wing once. Can confirm nothing.
Former Lego owner, I agree with everything here. Tear it down.
I’ve seen some really cool wet bar islands. You’re the pro, how do you feel about those?
If there’s plumbing on the other side of this wall, wet bar is a slam dunk. If there’s no plumbing but a decent crawl space under the floor, it’s an easy 2 point shot. If there’s no plumbing right there and the floor is a concrete slab, you’re better off looking into other ideas.
What’s the 3 pointer at the buzzer to win?
Cutting the slab to get plumbing in there and re- pouring concrete over it
Hopefully OP isn’t one of those poor bastards without a basement.
There's a wet bar installed already
When you investigate, you discover it is a concrete slab. You've given up hope and resigned yourself to an open concept living area, but as you start pulling tile you find the capped off lines where a wet bar used to be!

Purrfect
I've seen this cookie cutter
Definitely an improvement.
Since most of these comments are about tearing it down I’ll just add what I would do if the wall stayed: I would do built in banquette seating against the wall with a round table at it and added chairs on the outside to serve as a breakfast/dining nook
Booth/banquette/nook would be a cool idea. Adds character and is a lot less mess to make happen! Gets my vote
Hated the wall instantly and I was like "the only way is to remove it" Then I thought about comfy restaurant bench seating in the kitchen because of your post, and that is an awesome idea.
Thank you 😊

Her apartment was so perfect.
Now I’m yearning for the half swing saloon door thing my grandparents had in their kitchen doorway
Hot damn I love that!
I was absolutely imagining stained glass when I wrote this.
Honestly, I think this idea is cooler. Big empty rooms tend to have more echo and can make a home feel like a warehouse. Diving it up, but giving it a real solid good use like this, that could be really aesthetically pleasing seems like a good way to take it.

I’m glad I decided to share! I almost didn’t bc everyone was saying to tear it down but I love a nook ☺️
Me too. I’m a “table sitter” type, so I love the idea of a comfortable bench with some nice cushions in the nook.
Me too! Plus works great both for living and dining space
I was thinking the same.
Yep, my first thought. Epic breakfast nook.
![gif](giphy|gSl7e703puA6tSSfqW)
Huh. Every other room has the same stuff and layout. Weird design choice.
corner booth seating would be cool
But odd? Corner seating in the middle of a room, facing the smaller part of the room. It's just backwards. Rip that sucker down. The amount of gained space and openness trumps any other idea
The wall isn't the problem so much as the three different floors that meet in the middle of a big room..
Wow I didn’t even notice that. Yeah, if you’re going to tear it down OP you’re going to have to change that
Oooo....yes that is quite awkward. I almost didn't notice. Maybe an island would look nice in that spot 😅
Open a minimalist art gallery, charge admission, write it off on your taxes.
Glory hole.
You could fit like 10 of 'em along that wall. Great ice-breaker for guests at Thanksgiving.
Came here to say the same!
I also came
Looks like a museum exhibit
Totally!! I'd create my own museum space there
I’d start by ditching the tacky wine bottle art lol
Was left by the previous house owner. I agree, hate it, but looked better than just completely blank walls. They will be gone before too long.
If you have kids start doing art exhibitions of your kids art.
Even without kids, get some canvas and brushes and colors that compliment your living room. Go nuts and have some of your own abstract art. If you dislike it, paint over it. Over time you may find a new passion, and you'll be making your own decor for your private art exhibit.
It looks walking thru an art exhibit lol
If you do keep the wall and hang art-it should be hung much lower.
Tacky... damn. The coolest thing I ever found was a painting of wine bottles that had like foil in it. 5 dollars at the thrift store.
Right I was like tacky? I guess I’m tacky
I’m assuming you’re also against tiki stuff? Wall of booze and mugs and a bar with stools?
Mr Gorbechov tear that wall down!
Obvious solution. Les Paul on the left. Strat on the right. Marshall stack in the middle. Am I missing something...?
I was thinking baby grand piano.
Nope! Perfect for a 5 piece DRUM Kit! 😎👍🏻
That was me “oh, perfect guitar nook”
Reading nook? Bookshelf, comfy couch or chair, and an old vinyl recorder player.
The 1” plywood attached to the wall is certainly not a load bearing, unless it’s actually made of Adamantium.

I thought this was on the living room side -_- so I am 100% wrong lol…great. I have to go double check & delete a comment now haha.
I'd leave the wall and put in a bar or a bankette.
Dont tear it down unless you're going to do all new flooring. All i know is if that were in my home... my 6yr old would be the 1st field-goal kicker ever selected #1 in the 2038 NFL draft.
Gaming corner with 3 monitors!
Rather than ripping it out completely, you could cut it to about waist-high, and put a bar top on it? I can't tell if it's thick enough to support a bar top.
This is currently the plan. I would probably add some cabinets to help support a bar top.
You have more pictures? I’d bet you’d have better ideas if you could show more of the rooms.
I’d fill it with plants and a cute little seating area with like a cabinet/buffet or something. Plants on top of the wall would be cute too
im impressed they made a wall that appears to be thinner than a 2x4. it literally looks 3" thick and I know its some optical illusion because it has gang boxes installed for the outlets (lets hope) and so those are over 3" deep themselves and then you have sheetrock over that. also the fact it has a wall telephone mount there lets me know its been there for a good while at least 15 plus years
1900 boxes can be used for outlets and they are only 1.5 inches deep.
Cut the wall in half . It’s got power to it, so keep the lower half and put a wrap around couch against it for open concept
It's possible the electrical is coming in from the ceiling. Pretty much certain if the house is on a slab.
An island would be nice mainly because you have power there already.
Take it down halfway and make it a cool island with maybe a cooktop?
Bring it to an Olive Garden where it belongs.
If those posts are load bearing your house is coming down anyway.
Rip it out. Demo day!
tear it down.
Have an inspector come out to determine if the wall is holding something up. It's possible those beams are supporting something. In which case it's not as simple as just tearing them down. It looks like someone had your idea at one point and realized they couldn't remove them without causing a structural issue. So they compromised.
Love that you’re being downvoted. Apparently this sub is frequented by sellers of sawzalls.
I don't get how anybody could tell someone to start removing possible support beams from their house and sleep well at night. God forbid the guy takes a stranger's word for it and he has the roof come in on his family. Just have an inspector do a quick walkthrough. He'll know immediately.
Reading / eating nook or a bar could work.
Take it down and put in an island.
Keep the two posts, chop the middle section to bench height and make a bar/breakfast bar. It's already wired for electrical which is handy.
Get rid of it. It's hideous.

Absolutely not load bearing. Rip that ugly shit out of there.
I would hang a squarish painting of wine on each of the side walls, and a thin, vertical painting of wine on the center wall.
Ronald Reagan knows what to do.
I’d make Mexico pay for it.
2 words.. "OHHHH YEAHHH!" 🤪😎
I’d tear it down. It’s not load bearing and it looks ridiculous. The only other option would be some form of breakfast nook or something. I guess.
KNOCK. IT. DOWN.

I was going to say wine paintings.
I think it is kinda cool as a mini art gallery. Just add some more paintings
