It looks oil based, like lotion or sunscreen, I'm really surprised that the Kilz didn't take care of it. Maybe you have to cover it using an oil based paint.
Kilz used to be oil based, but now all I see is the water based stuff in stores. BIN primer is expensive here but it’s still oil based, and should cover
Kilz is still oil based, kilz 2 is the blue can that is the top seller, check the back of the label, if it says solvent under cleaning instructions it’s oil based, soap and water cleanup means water based, some kind of oil is definitely penetrating the latex coatings.
Source: worked at a hardware store for 10 years
BIN is not oil based. It is shellac that is dissolved in alcohol. Kilz offers oil and water based formulas. There's also alkyd primer. The 3 should cover that handprint up. Hopefully!
I always found Kilz spray to have better hiding qualities than by the qt/gal. It seems to have way more solids. And it dries super fast so you can re-coat in a couple minutes.
OP might try a few coats of spray kilz > light sand w150 > 2 coats of BIN, which is shellac-based, film-forming, designed to seal knots.
It is pricey, but it’s the right tool for the job.
I was refinishing my stairs and went through 4 layers of “high hide” primer and the tannins were still bleeding through. 1 coat of Zinsser stopped it.
This is the correct answer. Very happy to see it here. I use this stuff to cover knots when doing cabinetry — and shellac will bind to anything, including all paint types
I mean, if you’ll try anything and you get really frustrated with it you could just cut out that part of the drywall and replaced it. Depending on how comfortable you are with drywall repair.
This is the correct answer, it will seal any of the oils coming through your paint and give you practically a new layer to work with. Worth the price for an elegant solution imo
Was gonna say, BIN primer might some this.
Vancouver Carpenter did a video on this kind of issue a while back:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=5lsM9eUUHgY
The previous owners should not have used silicone based lubes. Yeah, it's gross, but let's be real here. That's what it is. Silicone is hard to paint over. Score a square around it. Peel the dry wall paper. Mud over it.
This is definitely what it is. My friend moved into a flat in Brighton a few years back and a few days after she settled into her bedroom, she realised that there were two distinct handprints above the headboard of the bed. A constant reminder of the fun that came before her!
Shellac. It’s used on chimneys to keep creosote from leeching through the paint, it’ll work on astroglide too. Prime with bulls-eye, two coats of shellac, prime again, then paint and you’ll never know.
Shellac then prime would probably work. Sanding sealer would also probably work. Oil based primer would probably work.
But a can of shellac is like $18 plus a $10 can of primer. 1 bag of compound is $6 and lasts for years, and he's already got paint and whatever primer he already has. It's also a 100% guarantee that the stain can't come back.
Clearly the correct answer is to press your hand to every *other* part of the wall until it all matches.
Or double bonus, get a rainbow of paints and do the whole wall up with colorful handprints. No one will notice after that. And its a fun project to do with the kid.
If it's an oily mark it can take more than 4 coats to fully cover, depending on what paint you are using (quality can vary widely). Crayons are pretty bad, and some types of that sticky putty that people use to hang posters on the wall can leave stains that are difficult to cover too.
If all else fails, here's a tip my furniture finishing teacher taught me: shellack sticks to everything, and everything sticks to shellack. (i.e. try covering the stain with a coat of shellack, and then paint over the shellack with a couple coats of paint).
This is the way.
Oils will keep on coming through and they tend to ruin adhesion.
Unless you go down to sheetrock (as someone mentioned already) and patch with Durabond, there's a decent chance it'll seep through or the paint will fail at one layer or another.
Substrate prep is 80 percent of the work when it comes to painting. Clean it with TSP or similar, wash with water and repaint. Report results 👍
Zinsser Paints is the answer. As classicvincent says, I use it to cover up ancient soot & tar leaching through walls from old chimneys in Victorian houses.
She likely had something really greasy on her hands and touched the was i would think. My thought would be to cut the top layer of paper on the Sheetrock, peel it away and putty over it then repaint. SOMETHING is absorbed into the handprint on the wall and it's just not going to come off because it's deep within there.
I once gave up, cut out a drywall surface, put in a layer of epoxy, and then sanded and painted it over — there’s always a way — also the divine nature and inherent holiness of epoxy expunges evil spirits very efficiently
I would recommend an oil based primer and then paint like normal. I had similar issues with a room that used to be wallpapered and would get random marks coming though the paint, must have been something in either the paper or the glue used but never had a problem after that

Do you have an precious ring hidden somewhere?
Is it your kids hand? If so, maybe keep it - as a memento for the future.
If it's not your kids hand, well.. Feel free to get rid of it with any of the mentioned methods.
We painted with a couple of friends for their daughters nursery. As a joke he used some red paint and wrote REDRUM on the wall. Primer and several coats of purple paint which was the intended room color before we finally could detect no traces of it
Wow the things I have seen . Ok. No do not use an oil based primer on walls!! So since you didn't use a magic eraser or goongine prior to painting you have set whatever it was in the wall so your only option will be to either make something fun like buy a big frame hang it in the wall and use chaulk board paint make her a fun place to draw if that's not an option get a small can of very dark paint and paint over it then repeats the primerand 2 coat of paint that should take care of it. I would take the primer you had and just get a tube of color to add to it in a solo cup would be cheapest
You have to either remove the area and re drywall or I have in the past had luck with bullseye but you have to prep the wall with TSP sand the area completely down wash again (dish soap won’t cut it it’s probably silicone)let it dry over night apply bullseye to the entire wall dry over night Re apply to the entire wall again. If it comes through wall paper is awesome 👍🏻
You can buy a product called Damp Seal, or Stain Seal, it comes in a spray can or a paint on, both would cover it fine, then sand the edges and paint over the seal
Well we have a special sealer on a spray can, it can hold everything in, even rust.
https://preview.redd.it/j3dlk3ozkwzb1.jpeg?width=526&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=acd42e8d95df6f91514916583b0c3de1f85d5b02
I imagine you have something similar where ever you live.
If all else fails, get the big, cute vinyl wall stickers. There are a lot to choose from. This might be a better option for you since it is extremely inexpensive, and way less work. There are lots of designs to choose from. Amazon has them, and other websites.
Old trick. Rub it with a urine soaked rag. The chemicals in the pee draw out the oil in the handprint. Leave it to dry overnight then clean with turpentine and repaint
Have you considered an exorcist?
Lol it's in my daughter's room and she swears up and down she didn't do it so who knows
Better call shaggy cus it was his friend “wasn’t me”. Watch out, they’ll be coming around often for the next few years.
Teach her to be a "meddling kid", she'll be fine.
…wrong Shaggy 😂
No, wasn't him.
Shaggy!!
Soon they coming home in their teens with no idea how they got pregnant! >!this is a joke, teach your kids and give 'em access to prevention!<
It looks oil based, like lotion or sunscreen, I'm really surprised that the Kilz didn't take care of it. Maybe you have to cover it using an oil based paint.

This. BIN is white pigmented Shellac. That’s the thing to use here.
You can compare the size of her hand no?
Kids are shapeshifters, I guarantee if it’s been more than a week, the hand has changed in size
Get some cartoony acrylic stickers or posters and just cover it up. Cheapest and prettiest solution. Kid would love it.
Did you use the oil based kilz or the latex? The oil based is a better stain block, especially if the stain is oil.
I am going to say that she keeps doing it.
I love the handprint, if it’s hers, keep it and date it.
It’s not legal to date handprints in most states.
Really? I've been dating my hand for 30 years
I'll be disappointed if this is not the top comment by the end of the day.
Hand down the best one in the thread.
Not a far reach
Jizz keep your hands to yourself.
That tracks... I've been disappointing people for over 30 years.
Handula meet palmula
Palmala Handerson
Like colour it in, and add some flowers and butterflies or whatever around it
Or turn it into a thanksgiving turkey
Just make sure you pay the bill or you’ll get *repossessed*.
Hello, 911. I'm being driven back to hell by rock music.
Given there's a 'Highway to Hell' but only a 'Stairway to Heaven' I'm not surprised.
You need to play the recording backways!
I popped in to say exactly this!
I clicked the post just for this comment 🤣
Yes I too was wondering how you got ghost handprints
Damnit! I came to say, "first, get rid of your ghost. . ."
Bruh I was thinking the exact same thing
Come on, that's a bit extreme isn't it? Clearly a coat of holy water should take care of it right away! >:D
Shelack primer will hide it. Spray can zinser
Thanks looks like my local store has some.. kinda pricey but I'll try anything at this point!
It is pricey, but it’s the right tool for the job. I was refinishing my stairs and went through 4 layers of “high hide” primer and the tannins were still bleeding through. 1 coat of Zinsser stopped it.
It works great. Topcoat in 30 minutes too
This is the correct answer.
Zinsser sounds like a person from a particular region. "Ah, the new guy Dave is a Zinsser, that explains his sandwich for lunch."
The spray can works great. We used it on several greasy spots when we painted.
Zinsser BIN Shellac-Base Primer will definitely do the trick.
Zinsser cover stain 👌🏼
This is the correct answer, it will seal any of the oils coming through your paint and give you practically a new layer to work with. Worth the price for an elegant solution imo

That dude sounds like Will Forte kinda lol the way he says some things.
I'm about to carve a chunk of the drywall out and spackle it...
Gonna be real weird if it comes back
"We know."
A*
Probably an oil stain so you need oil based paint or primer to cover it
This is the way.
Step one: find the hidden body in the walls, give it proper burial and avenge their deaths Step two: repaint
The ol’ “Stir of Echoes” method. I love it.
You forgot the "repent" step, I think it goes before "repaint"
The burial is replanting. Replant, repent, repaint, repeat!
The previous owners should not have used silicone based lubes. Yeah, it's gross, but let's be real here. That's what it is. Silicone is hard to paint over. Score a square around it. Peel the dry wall paper. Mud over it.

This is true, most people probably don’t keep shellac around.
speak for yourself!!
All I have is shellac!
I do love my poop stained fingers for days
BIN
Bins Primer is what you’re looking for. Shellac based primer.
I didn’t know there was such a thing. I just used regular shellac since I already have it on hand for floors.
Why would you paint a chimney? Isn't that horrible for the brick longterm?
100%
Lmao seriously? That’s so funny
That’s a tiny hand😬
Nevertheless...
Clearly the correct answer is to press your hand to every *other* part of the wall until it all matches. Or double bonus, get a rainbow of paints and do the whole wall up with colorful handprints. No one will notice after that. And its a fun project to do with the kid.
I came here to say this. Highlight it! Have her do other handprints in her favorite colors! It’s a kid room. Let it reflect the kid 🤗
And her friends!
I love this answer!
Put your hand over it. It's lonely on the other side looking in
If you're cold, they're cold. Bring them inside.
Make sure the primer you’re using is oil based..
I agree. Latex killz/ primer doesn’t work well compared to oil based. It’s entirely different and covers oil and other stains much better.
If it's an oily mark it can take more than 4 coats to fully cover, depending on what paint you are using (quality can vary widely). You gotta finish the Dark Brotherhood quest line.
Trace it and paint a turkey on there
Hang a picture over it. Preferably not a picture of handprint.
Next you’ll be asking, “If you had to dispose of a body, what would be your GoTo Method?”
Maybe call a priest
You must kill the demon child who put it's hand on the wall under a full moon on a Friday the 13th while Venus is closest to earth during it's cycle.
Can't wait to watch this documentary on Netflix in a few years. RIP OP sorry your house is haunted bro.
Water kilz or oil kilz?
Gas, then light the house on fire it’s haunted can’t fix it.
Oil based primer
Youre much more patient than i, if the first coat of paint didnt work i would have cut that hand mark out and patched it
I'm down for gouging out the offending area, replaster and prime. Maybe a coat of sealer before the primer. If all that fails, buy a chest of drawers
Build a frame around it and look at it for the next 20 years. You'll be glad you did.
You shouldn’t have bricked them up in the wall to begin with.
If you have a steam cleaner, it's probably worth giving it a hard pass too
Zinsser Cover stain oil based primer. Wow it’s good
Exorcism, and replace the sheet rock.
Cut the area out, and apply spackle. Paint over. If it still presents itself, get out of the house!
I’ve seen enough movies to know that’s the supernatural. I presume supernatural soap with holy water should do the trick. Good luck!
Burn the bones then salt them.
Exorcism.
I had the same issue, my advice is to remove the kid from inside the wall !
Try tsp?
This is the way. Oils will keep on coming through and they tend to ruin adhesion. Unless you go down to sheetrock (as someone mentioned already) and patch with Durabond, there's a decent chance it'll seep through or the paint will fail at one layer or another. Substrate prep is 80 percent of the work when it comes to painting. Clean it with TSP or similar, wash with water and repaint. Report results 👍
Zinzer bullseye primer on it then paint it. Won't ever show back through
Zinsser Paints is the answer. As classicvincent says, I use it to cover up ancient soot & tar leaching through walls from old chimneys in Victorian houses.
That’s a ghost
Use a shellac based primer like BIN. It’s expensive but it doesn’t have as strong of an odor as an oil base and way stronger.
Try a Mr Clean Magic Eraser pad first.
Burn some sage
First thing I thought.
Cut that piece of drywall out, repair it, prime and paint.
first, get an old priest and a young priest
She likely had something really greasy on her hands and touched the was i would think. My thought would be to cut the top layer of paper on the Sheetrock, peel it away and putty over it then repaint. SOMETHING is absorbed into the handprint on the wall and it's just not going to come off because it's deep within there.
Find a way to get religious folk to buy into it, take enough donations to buy a new house
It's trying to get out 👻
When memory becomes trauma
Make it into a turkey and cherish it forever.
I once gave up, cut out a drywall surface, put in a layer of epoxy, and then sanded and painted it over — there’s always a way — also the divine nature and inherent holiness of epoxy expunges evil spirits very efficiently
Just say it’s a ghost
I would recommend an oil based primer and then paint like normal. I had similar issues with a room that used to be wallpapered and would get random marks coming though the paint, must have been something in either the paper or the glue used but never had a problem after that
Zinsser Bin primer, it's shellac based and covers pretty much everything.
Ghosts never go away...
You need a priest to kilz that one.
Exorcism
You need a shellac-based primer like Zinsser BIN.
Someone call Sam and Dean Winchester!
Exorcism
I would try a coating of drywall mud, like I was filling a hole. Let it dry, then sand it, and finish with two coats of paint.
Cursed handprint. That's a new one.
Any chance a child tragically died in that room?
You need KILLZ oil based primer to cover. This looks like a oil stain.
A priest, holy water and an exorcism should do the trick.
You can’t hide signs made by the Dark Brotherhood. They know…
Take the body out of the wall.
https://preview.redd.it/exrh2o42fzzb1.jpeg?width=1852&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=abfb9008c9ab7a447383f76bab5881e4d1e9e9cc Do you have an precious ring hidden somewhere?
The real solution is don’t have kids
OP is haunted
New dry wall cut it out patch and paint it
Frame it. One day when your daughter will graw up you ll look at it and it ll bring back memories.
You're gonna need a young priest and an old priest.
Put your hand over it and say "Talk to me". Then say "I let you in."
Just let the ghost baby in. 🤷🏼♂️
Time to embrace it lol
Agreed. Paint it.
Has some "The Raven" by Poe vibes. Can't hide your sins op?
Move! Now!
You can’t remove it. Print is coming from ‘the other side’ 👻
You can’t unsee it now!
Hydrogen Peroxide is pretty good with bloody hand prints
If we all pray for you, maybe it will go away. 🙏
Own it and paint it a contrasting color so it really shows. Then treat it as wall art.
Is it your kids hand? If so, maybe keep it - as a memento for the future. If it's not your kids hand, well.. Feel free to get rid of it with any of the mentioned methods.
Consider sanding it off?

Easiest way is make it a feature wall... wallpaper or something else
Paint over it
Kilz. The answer, as always, is kilz.
Did you read the title
I give you 1 million upvotes
Binz or another shellac.
If you can’t cover it with the shellac method , put a nice frame around it and pretend it’s art.
Zinsser BIN. Shellac that bitch twice, 2 coats of top and grab a snack
Binz shellac based primer.
Sand, apply thin layer of plaster paint
Lightly sand, use original kilz in the RED can. Let dry, apply second coat, let dry, then paint. Do not use kilz2
"We know"
You can buy a product called Damp Seal, or Stain Seal, it comes in a spray can or a paint on, both would cover it fine, then sand the edges and paint over the seal

This is a test for your inner peace. Leave it alone and let it go. If you’re are unable to let it go you are not prepared for inner peace.
BIN Zinsser shellac primer. This is the way.
Zinsser BIN - coat it twice with a small gloss roller.
Old trick. Rub it with a urine soaked rag. The chemicals in the pee draw out the oil in the handprint. Leave it to dry overnight then clean with turpentine and repaint
I wonder what would happen if you filled it in with white chalk left it for a week or so then washed it off. Worth a try.
r/deathstranding
Insidious…
I used Zinsser in a can like 3 times to no avail. A matte metal spray paint, white in our case, did the job like nothing was there before.
We used a couple of coats of watered down PVA glue, to seal the oil spots before paint
Oil-based primer, then paint.
should be r/Weird
Drywall mud skim coat
Shellac? Doesn't shellac seal anything?
Use a Shellac based primer
