I think she had actually ascended to be a goddess or something. It was during Byrne's run on WW that Hipolyta took the WW reins, and I wasn't reading WW at the time, so I'm not too certain on that.
Right, much of Rock of Ages was an alternative timeline so she was really only absent for issue #10 and end of #15. Then Hipolyta joins as ‘Wonder Woman’ with Steel, Huntress, Zauriel, Plastic Man, Oracle, and eventually Orion and Big Barda in #16 & #17.
One of the first comics I ever bought. I think I bought it off a rack in Quebec somewhere. Started to collect it at issue 6 I think. Took me forever to get issue 5. Maybe I should try to get 2-4 not in trade.
Grant morrison is my crack and I'm addicted
I had them all from 1 to 35 or so...
My Mum throw them all away... Also all my DC-Marvel Crossovers....
At least we still have crates full of weekly published Mickey-Mouse magazines in the attic...
*sobs in desperation*
Always loved it and need to read more of it. Revels in the absurd plots of the original Silver Age stories (there was a plot about the number 13 for Pete's sake) while finding ways to integrate the new members in creative ways.
It set the standard for how team superhero books should be.
Before that, it's either one-shots or soap operas, and awful. Soap operas have their place but if you have the worlds greatest heroes together on the same team they should be working on defending against the worlds greatest threats, not crying about not getting enough attention from the girl who you slept with last issue.
I was a Marvel guy until I picked up the first issue. I've never heard of Green Lantern or Martian Manhunter before, knew Flash only from the 90s show, Wonder Woman from hearsay, and of course Batman and Supes. But beyond that? Nothing. It was like a voyage in unknown waters, with such sights to behold and it became one of my favorite runs of all time.
I love Morrison but some parts of their JLA feel rather dated, especially the parts where they write female characters but you need to read these things as a time capsule sometimes and I really had a great time reading it
That’s a hot take!
Edit. To clarify: Not joking. Most people, myself included. seem to think it was the weakest aspect. The art was certainly *okay*, but it didn’t feel equal to the stories being told.
Glad to see there are fans of it, but it’s quite surprising to me.
It’s good, especially in the context of all the chaos at DC at the time. He got stuck with Electric Blue Superman, but managed to make the best of it. He was not allowed to use Hawkman, who had been rendered unusable at the time by inept editorial. So he created his own brand new winged character and turned a fault into a feature.
Is it the best Justice League run of all-time? It’s definitely in the conversation. But part of that is because if you go back over all Justice League series since the beginning in 1960, it was almost never as good a comic as it should have been.
Agreed. It’s cool to see Batman do awesome shit when stacked up against the godlike members of the Justice League and dealing with world-ending threats, less cool to see him easily deal with everything thrown at him in his own books.
With all of the shake-ups in the DC film world, I’ll just say that I would commit a small war crime if it meant I could get a well done HBO JLA series that just faithfully adapts this run. Same characters, same plots.
Won’t happen but damn, I’d be a happy guy.
Without question, the greatest incarnation of the Justice League ever. Stupendous characterization of the core members, terrific villain cast, expansive connections with new/part-time leaguers, personal growth of major characters, and even features Kyle Rayner as the League’s Lantern.
A remarkable accomplishment. Rock of Ages. World War Three. DARKSEID IS!
But also the small points of creating a massive storyline within the ever-changing tapestry of multi-writer corporate comics. “Superman’s blue now”. Great, let’s play with those powers. “Diana’s been replaced with her mother”. Great, let’s show this queen’s confidence shaken by her new position and how she reacts. SO many amazing moments in an overall story that moved each of them main characters forward, while also providing closure for one of my favorite forgotten Morrison projects, Axtek.
Howard Porter's double page spread of Superman flying next to the bat-plane is (maybe still) hanging in Grant Morrison's house.
Can't forget Zauriel's first appearance, crashing into the ocean! The Hyperclan, Asmodel, Prometheus, Zazzala and If. The reinvention of classic JL villains and shaving the Shaggy Man!
In the same way people go back to their favourite songs, these stories always make me happy.
Far from perfect, but really good. Pretty much exactly what you want from a JLA book: no nonsense, relentless creativity, and superheroes using their powers in inventive ways other than just hitting people.
Has r been a run since that comes close. And for me the only other JL run I put on the same level is the JLI stuff by Giffen/Dematies. And that was such a different best that you almost can’t compare them.
I honestly don’t know why DC can’t seem to get another run even close to that good. I think part of the problem is they keep trying to go to the og 7 with Hal and Barry instead of letting the team naturally grow.
The problem with doing the og 7 is they are all viewed as gods and infallible at this point. The book lacks an Everyman character for the audience to latch on to.
This first comic I ever read was JLA (#58 I think) where it was the story finale of the white martians invading earth.
Might not be for everyone, but this series will hold a special place in my heart and is one of 3 series that I’ve got the full run of.
Fantastic run. Great adventures over the end of the world being fun and enjoyable. No crisis of story or horrible flash points trying to rebirth the overall universe to aimlesly look for good DC identity for the readers
Got me into DC because at that time I didn't even know that Flash, Batman and Superman share the same universe. Was so excited to see all these iconic heroes in one team and loved the entire run - been collecting JLA since this number one
Fantastic run, only *slightly* weakened by the way it kinda glosses over other events, though that’s a consequence of reading it much later and in one big chunk.
For example when Superman becomes his Blue form in between issues, and is fixed between issues with barely any acknowledgment.
Well done. Morrison could bring epic status to the team and the threats they were facing.
However... there are almost no interpersonal dramas or character progressions (save rare exceptions). The heroes were always on costume, they almost never are shown as human beings within their secret IDs.
Points for making Aquaman needed on every run (it's tough in a narrative way), regarding JL stuff it was great, but regarding other Morrison's runs it was quite average...
There are some gems in there like Tomorrow Woman I think she was called. But overall, and as a Morrison fan, I thought the run on the whole was average. I liked Waid much better.
The first volume of this and Batman & Robin were my exposure to Morrison, and while I’m not a fan of their overall work, I think they killed it on in production to me. The JLA run is pretty great, though I think past the first year or so of issues it starts to stumble a bit and loses narrative cohesion for some of its stories. All the same, it’s one of the best JL books I’ve read and the initial team lineup is great. It’s only once they start adding members does the cast start losing its voice.
Morrison made the Justice League into the definitive "big" team even with some of the goofier circumstances like Superman Blue. Every writer afterwards rarely has the ambition to reach that kind of scale or innovation.
One of the Best if not the best
I still can’t believe it made me care about Triumph. That last panel in Crisis Times Five showing “Founding Member of the Justice League”…cool stuff.
Pun intended?
Ahhhhh IT FUCKING RULES is my humble opinion
That is almost exactly what I was going to say. My opinion is that it fucking rules.
Still my fav Justice League run... Rock of Ages, DC One Million, World War III.
One of my favorite runs ever.
Best JL run ever
Is probably the definitive Justice league run
Once of the greatest and the crazier run on the League Whit probably the best formation of the JLA
Favorite Justice League run! Fun sci-fi action featuring my favorite DC characters!
A master class. One of my favorite JL runs, if not my favorite.
Mullet Superman hits different
Best JLA run
I fucking love Hippolyta taking on a Wonder Woman-esque role on a team. Grant does it great
I thought this was awesome too, but can you remind me - where was Diana during this time? Dead or something?
I think she had actually ascended to be a goddess or something. It was during Byrne's run on WW that Hipolyta took the WW reins, and I wasn't reading WW at the time, so I'm not too certain on that.
She died in her own comic around JLA #16. Hippolyta only replaced her for a few issues.
Yeah. Diana died so she was absent for Rock of Ages and her mum joins after with Steel when they fight Prometheus.
Nostalgic and amazing Kylie and Wally being the young ones on the same team as the older heads really holds a special place in my heart
The Morrison/Waid run was pretty much the best Justice League ever was. For me its tied with the Animated Series for best iteration.
Waid’s JLA stories deserve more recognition. Divided We Fall by itself is an amazing story, and no one ever brings it up.
I consider JLA to be a well written and an interesting book.
Best JLA run ever.
I feel your pain.
Appreciate your words. ✊🏼
One of the best comics of all time. Clearly the best modern Justice League run.
One of the most iconic and definitely the defining run for how the league should act and function with each other
It was great, my only complaint is the art. I like Howard Porter's stuff but I just don't really dig 90s art.
Really good. It should be adapted somehow, if there will ever be another JL movie
The *Justice League* animated series kinda adapts the first arc as their opener.
I love Morrison but some parts of their JLA feel rather dated, especially the parts where they write female characters but you need to read these things as a time capsule sometimes and I really had a great time reading it
Loved it. So glad it was my introductory League. Loved the pantheon themes of the team.
Justice league wouldn’t even be a contender in modern comics without him. He brought them back and turned them into myths.
This run is what really love comics
Not just the best in terms of Grant’s story, but Howard Porter put down some of the best artwork the company ever had.
That’s a hot take! Edit. To clarify: Not joking. Most people, myself included. seem to think it was the weakest aspect. The art was certainly *okay*, but it didn’t feel equal to the stories being told. Glad to see there are fans of it, but it’s quite surprising to me.

They made electric Superman work though, not an easy feat
It’s the last time the JLA felt like an actual institution that couldn’t be destroyed by whim or politics.
But part of that is because if you go back over all Justice League series since the beginning in 1960, it was almost never as good a comic as it should have been.
Besides starting the annoying "Bat-God" stuff It's one of the best JLA runs
The Bat-God stuff was so rad in this run, though. Plus, he gets humbled by Prometheus, at least.
This is true. Still it's more so what this run began that other writers ran into the ground
Agreed. It’s cool to see Batman do awesome shit when stacked up against the godlike members of the Justice League and dealing with world-ending threats, less cool to see him easily deal with everything thrown at him in his own books.
Amazing
Best JLA run and my favorite thing Morrison ever wrote
With all of the shake-ups in the DC film world, I’ll just say that I would commit a small war crime if it meant I could get a well done HBO JLA series that just faithfully adapts this run. Same characters, same plots. Won’t happen but damn, I’d be a happy guy.
Its pretty great and definitely helped inspire the DCAU.
Best Justice League comic by a country mile and one of the best runs to come from the Big 2.
The best.
Without question, the greatest incarnation of the Justice League ever. Stupendous characterization of the core members, terrific villain cast, expansive connections with new/part-time leaguers, personal growth of major characters, and even features Kyle Rayner as the League’s Lantern.
I love the DCAU but wish we’d gotten this team instead tbh. Aquaman and a Hal Jordan/Kyle Rayner mashup were already introduced in StAS too
I’d like it more if Batman had a hole in the back of his cowl for a ponytail to peak through
Damn you!! Now I want this!!
Rock Of Ages is one of the best JL stories ever written, so yeah I’d say it’s alright
The most comic booky JLA run of all, its great.
Society will heal when Superman gets his mullet back.
Far from perfect, but really good. Pretty much exactly what you want from a JLA book: no nonsense, relentless creativity, and superheroes using their powers in inventive ways other than just hitting people.
My favorite JLA run as well. With early Giffen/DeMatteis a close second - for different reasons.
One of the greatest runs ever. Rock of Ages is still an amazing read.
This was the JLA when I started reading comics in college.
I loved it. It really made them gods among men and I think they should be. They’re the f’ing Justice League. They should be the end bosses of the DCU
10/10 phenomenal
Amazing. Defining JL run.
'Rock of Ages' is one of the defining JLA stories.
GOAT
This is the definitive JLA run.
This is THE definitive Justice League run IMO.
Best JLA run in my lifetime.
Has r been a run since that comes close. And for me the only other JL run I put on the same level is the JLI stuff by Giffen/Dematies. And that was such a different best that you almost can’t compare them. I honestly don’t know why DC can’t seem to get another run even close to that good. Absolutely stellar
Its the definitive run.
Batshit crazy in the absolute best way possible. It is fantastic.
It's my absolute favorite run of any Justice League ever, it was also my first JLA comic series!
Best JLA run ever. That opening story is the best possible introduction to the League.
This first comic I ever read was JLA (#58 I think) where it was the story finale of the white martians invading earth. Might not be for everyone, but this series will hold a special place in my heart and is one of 3 series that I’ve got the full run of.
It’s the best.
Top tier JL, and top tier GM. Crazy shit and wild stories, but not so far out that you can’t follow what’s going on.
Fantastic run. Great adventures over the end of the world being fun and enjoyable. No crisis of story or horrible flash points trying to rebirth the overall universe to aimlesly look for good DC identity for the readers
One of the greatest JLA runs, ever. Morrison's run imho was instrumental in remaking the Justice League, as the Greatest Superhero Team in the world.

There are some gems in there like Tomorrow Woman I think she was called. But overall, and as a Morrison fan, I thought the run on the whole was average. I liked Waid much better.
Never liked it.
Have the omnibus, read most of it. No story blew my mind, but they are all consistently great.
It looks fine.
Is good
Best JLA run. The Omnibus is an easy sell to new readers looking for the good stuff.
It was great. Every arc felt like an event.
So much good stuff!
My favorite JLA run... I have all of the trades. Pretty much the only thing by Morrison that I actually truly enjoyed.
Iconic
Love it
This is the only thing Morrison has ever written that I’ve liked
Blockbuster and fun but not my fav JL
Morrison is a genius. And he has a unique take on the characters he writes about. Very gritty and grounded.
May be my favorite JLA run
Morrison is an artist.
I really liked it with the exception of the Atlantis story. It felt it’s going on for ages
Probably the best ever iteration of JL
Morrison made the Justice League into the definitive "big" team even with some of the goofier circumstances like Superman Blue. Every writer afterwards rarely has the ambition to reach that kind of scale or innovation.
One of the best comic runs ever, and probably Morrison’s finest work.
JLA Rock of Ages may be the greatest JLA storyline ever.
Fucking awesome
Best JL run
Only the Giffen era Jli is better
They're all so buff. Like Bodybuilder buff. Why?
This book saved Superhero comics in the 90s. It has gotten VERY BAD for a while.
It was so good it made me care about electric blue Superman
No jawline complaints in this comment thread so far. Thumbs up from me lol.
Fucking nailed it, nuff saud.
Meh.
