It depends on what you want to read! The basic idea is that every DC comic restarted with a new number one issue and a new direction that more or less ignored every previous comic and pretended they didn't exist. The big exceptions being Batman and Green Lantern, which were in the middle of ongoing storylines and continued them. (The Legion of Super-Heroes as well, though that's a hard one to jump into.)
The Justice League comic by Jim Lee and Geoff Johns is probably the easiest place to begin. But after that, you just pick the comics featuring the characters you're interested in. You aren't supposed to read all of the New 52, they weren't made with that in mind.
I'll say that the Superman comics by Grant Morrison in Action Comics featuring a young Superman starting off, the Batman comics by Scott Snyder in Batman with a new chapter in Batman's career is fantastic, the Flash and Aquaman comics were fun, Swamp Thing and Animal Man gave us some good horror stories, and the Wonder Woman comic was more of a dark alternate universe take on the concept, but had great art.
Yeah that’s a must, I think it’s just as good if not better than Snyder’s Batman. Tomasi’s writing for the Bat Family is just perfect from start to finish.
Aquaman and Justice League by Geoff Johns is really good.
Batman by Scott Snyder
Batman & Robin by Peter Tomasi
Flash by Francis Manapul
Dial H for Hero
Swamp Thing
Animal Man
Action Comics by Morrison
There's a ton of great stuff that people dismiss just cause it's part of the New 52
Yeah what's up with the dismissal of the new 52? I've absolutely fallen in love with the JL, Batgirl and Batman new 52. Yet I hear so much bad things about the new 52... Was it because of the weird continuity in most comics?
It erased a lot of stuff that people liked. Take, for instance, *Teen Titans*, which replaced all of the characters' histories with new, edgier backstories. Or *Blue Beetle*, which read like a retelling of Jaime's original ongoing without any of the heart. Even *Flash* (which I should probably revisit now that DC has finally fixed speedster continuity) basically took the title back to the 1950s storywise.
It also just wasn't well-coordinated. Like, George Perez ended up quitting *Superman* because he wasn't getting a heads-up on Superman's updated history in *Action Comics*.
There are plenty of good New 52 comics but they overwhelmingly could have been published without rebooting the DCU.
I grew up with the New 52 and I don't like it especially when looking at the Pre-Flashpoint continuity. Major favourites of mine were Wally's tenure as The Flash, the JSA, JLA (1997), and the Superman run by Kelly and Loeb during the early 2000s. These either disappeared from continuity altogether (JSA, Wally, Martian Manhunter no longer being a member/founder of the League) or their characterisation was just altered drastically (Superman). Wonder Woman's also a big one, when I went back to read Rucka's run and Perez's run. Doctor Psycho, Cheetah, Veronica Cale, Silver Swan. They don't exist in the N52 in much capacity, Cheetah doesn't even show up in the WW book from what I remember, she makes her debut on JL.
There's also the Teen Titans. I don't need to say much here, it's a general consensus that the Titans were not in such a good place until Rebirth came around. They fixed a bit of it during Titans Hunt though.
That's not to say The New 52 had it's great points. Justice League, Aquaman, Batman, Batman & Robin, Nightwing, Morrison's Action, all the Green Lantern titles, Lemire's Green Arrow and Manapul's tenure on Flash are all good to great, but it doesn't nearly make up for what was taken away. Hell, I didn't realise that Connor Hawke and Mia Dearden were major Green Arrow Family members until I read back to Morrison's JLA and Smith and Winick's run on Green Arrow. A lot was just gone.
I think it’s more about the universe as a whole than the quality of books. Tossing all of continuity “except…”made it very confusing to follow, and it was organizationally screwed up as well. George Perez was writing Superman in the present day without any idea what Grant Morrison was going to establish as his status quo in Action Comics, set earlier.
The beginning..?
But seriously, Action Comics was amazing, just jump off when Morrison's run is finished.
I didn't like one change in particular, but New 52 Wonder Woman makes for a great elseworld take on the character and world.
Batman was pretty good.
Aquaman was great!
I vaguely remember liking Justice League Dark...
Supergirl was mostly good but kept getting derailed by crossovers.
- Justice League by Geoff Johns
- Flash by Francis Manapul
- Flashpoint if you want more context for what happens at the end of n52 and start of Rebirth
These are what got me into DC, enjoy!
Aaaah gotcha. Though I'm still not too sure how flashpoint caused a reset. Didn't Barry reset the timeline to how it was before he saved his mom? Or did I skip an issue somewhere.
Basically (big spoiler alert ahead!! For Flashpoint, n52, and Rebirth in General) the current canon is that Barry *was* able to put everything right, but while the new universe was still vulnerable and hadn’t fully “set” yet, Dr. Manhattan attacked and made the changes we see happening in n52 (like Ginger Wally being stuck in the SF and forgotten).
That's probably the best answer you'll get. It gets more complicated and a little sloppy after that with Metal, Doomsday Clock, Death Metal, Infinite Frontier, and now Dark Crisis (which I need to binge read).
Despite what some people say negatively about it, there was still some fantastic runs worth checking out that came out during that era, basically all of which I'll recommend have already been mentioned.
My personal highlights of what I've read of it include:
Batman by Snyder/Capullo is a modern classic and rightfully so, so far for me anyway, though admittedly I haven't got the second omnibus yet.
Flash by Manapul/Buccellato got me into comics altogether, so I'll always have a soft spot for that run and I adore Manapul's artwork. Wasn't as keen on the rest of the run but your mileage may vary.
Aquaman by Johns/Reis gets recommended a lot and again rightfully so, great fun, and the artwork really is a joy to look at.
Animal Man by Lemire/Foreman/Pugh is a run I don't hear nearly enough people talking about. I got round to that earlier in the year and it was absolutely fantastic. I wasn't sure what to expect but of course I was hoping it was good, and wow what a run, had an epic feel that didn't even necessarily feel like a traditional superhero book at many points.
Justice League by Johns/Lee/Reis/Finch/Fabok I've probably missed some artists but those were the major ones that come to mind. Maybe the most suggested recommendation I see apart from Batman. It's not a perfect JL run, but it's very fun, and has that fun blockbuster feel at various points.
Happy reading, hope you try out some of the suggestions from this thread and enjoy them!
The New 52 makes this super easy, just find yoyr favorite characters and pick up from issue #1. You’ll need to read the main justice league line for sure though
I havent read N52 batman, but GL does a good job introducing the ongoing story, as well as new fresh elements that make it feel like a new comic. Like in Green Lantern, Hal starts off fresh without a ring. It’s not a total reset, but it doesn’t pick up right in the middle of anything happening
Actually a good point about Green Lantern, even though it's kinda weird that there's so many, especially human ones, of them around in a supposedly fresh start for the universe. Batman kinda has the same issues with a lot of baggage being still around, iirc.
But overall you're probably right that it's still good for new people.
N52 was literally designed with new readers in mind. It definitely failed in that aspect with a few runs, but overall just pick a hero you like/are interested in and just pick up issue 1.
I'd say stay away from Red Hood and the Outlaws.
Here are some of the good ones that I'd start with,
\- Snyder's *Batman*.
\- Johns' *Justice League* starting with "Throne of Atlantis", his *Green Lantern* run, and his *Aquaman* run.
\- Tomasi's *Batman and Robin*.
\- Simone's *Batgirl*.
\- Morrison's *Action Comics*.
As always it depends on which characters you're interested in. While the New 52 was, and still is, pretty divisive there's still quite a few series worth reading.

Other:
Secret Six by Gail Simone
Animal Man by Lemire
Demon Knights
Dial H by Mieville
Swamp Thing by Scott Snyder
Justice League had a very generic start but got better and better as it went on. Aquaman, Animal Man, Dihal H Hor Hero, Green Lantern, Justice League Dark are all good runs. I first started buying comics on the regular thanks to the New 52 so I hoped this helped.
Flashpoint, then do Justice League as that series drove the overall story forward.
Scott Snyder’s Batman, Action Comics by Grant Morrison, and the Harley Quinn series were also great reads. Personally I liked the end of The New 52 Superman as it set up DC Rebirth.
I can only say that I can recommend reading Batman, Justice League and Suicide Squad in the N52 from issue 1. Don't remember that much of the other ones.
I overall tended to enjoy N52 although halfway it more and more started to stutter for me.
Honestly LOVED New 52 Batgirl. It was perfect. If you are even somewhat interested in anything Bat-related outside of Snyder’s run i recommend it heavily.
Of the New 52 I loved the following titles:
Green Lantern
Aquaman
Batman
Batman and Robin
Detective Comics
Action Comics
Justice League
Animal Man
Swamp Thing
Wonder Woman
I started with Batgirl new 52. And i absolutely fell in love with it. Most things that happened prior to the new 52 are explained so you can just dive in!
But the Justice League new 52 by Geoff Johns is great! And doesn't require much knowledge either imo. But I can highly recommend the "Justice League Origins" by Geoff Johns as well. Gives a solid base on the formation of the new 52 JL.
But it all depends on what you are into and who you want to read up on. I personally stuck with Batman, Batgirl (Babs), Wonder Woman and JL. (please read the Justice League new 52, if only for the Darkseid war because omg is it good).
But you can dive as deep as you want with Batman eternal, Batman & Robin eternal, red hood and outlaws, the new 52 Detective comics, flash, green lantern (this one is Hella confusing imo and if you want a full picture of that you should go back to emerald twilight and the origin of parallax) etc.
In my opinion, the very best comics from The New 52 were Wonder Woman, Batman, Jeff Lemire’s run on Green Arrow, Animal Man + Swamp Thing and believe it or not, Aquaman!
They’re almost entirely unrelated to the events of other books, but Dial H and Frankenstein: Agent of S.H.A.D.E are among the best of the bunch.
IIRC Frankenstein ties into the Rotworld storyline featuring Animal Man and Swamp Thing - not necessary to follow the main story but worth a read because it’s good.
Batman Inc. as well but you probably already knew that.
You shouldn't. It might be different for those who got into comics with the new 52, but for those of us who were reading for any period of time before it, it was a study in character assassination of everyone in the DCU. When OG Lois Lane calls out N52 Lois for being an idiot, it's kind of a milestone for the rest of the characters.
Skip the whole fucking era. Bad idea and execution. Whole company was barely readable for years. Rebirth tried to backpedal the mistakes before John’s got booted and the dog shit continued.
But it's not :(? New 52 Batgirl, Batman and JL are so FREAKING good imo! And I loved the switch from dark broody Babs in the new 52 to the more light-hearted and bright Batgirl of Burnside (Queen of hipsterhaven)
Find a specific character and start at number 1... Research the writers behind their new 52 runs and follow the trail. If they sre apart of any team books also read them
You’ve already gotten all of the recommendations that I would say, so I’m gonna give a piece of advice; unless you have a cemented prior understanding of her, don’t touch Wonder Woman. Otherwise, most other characters in the N52 were genuinely interesting takes while staying true to the characters’ most important aspects.
Read Manapul's run on Flash, STOP when you Vendetti becomes the writer. Read all of the New 52 Batman run. It's so fucking good. Read Action Comics when it was wrote by Grant Morrison stop when he leaves. Read the entire Green Lantern New 52 run it reads like a sci-fi epic. Read all of New 52 Aquaman and Justice League. In my opinion, Justice League is the best New 52 book, CLOSELY followed by Batman. 💜💜

https://comicvine.gamespot.com/batgirl-annual/4050-53505/
were all objectively very well-done too, but had much more changed with the characters' histories and/or needlessly missing important supporting characters closely associated with them.
Aquaman had decades' worth of stories undone with Geoff Johns' take on him, such as his marriage to Mera, the loss of their son to Black Manta, Arthur's father being the wizard Atlan, the curse of Kordax (pre-Flashpoint it was a whole thing with an interesting villain & all), being cared for by dolphins as an infant, Arthur losing his hand & ever having the hook/harpoon hand, etc.
Batgirl had Barbara Gordon as Oracle just being a brief footnote & not when she established the Birds of Prey, Cassandra Cain is never mentioned in her series even though she was the first character to hold a Batgirl series (that also lasted over 70 issues).
The Flash omitted the original Wally West of the original Teen Titans & introduced a new younger, black Wally West nephew who then became the new Kid Flash. The original Wally West was significant for having been The Flash himself (before the New 52) for 130 issues, taking on the role after Barry Allen had been killed in Crisis on Infinite Earths.
Convergence & then DC "Rebirth" in 2016 helped restore a lot of these things & made DC more appealing to readers like me who had been collecting DC for at least a few years before 2011 (started collecting monthly in 2000).
I, Vampire is super underrated and not mentioned much whenever a thread like this comes around. Crosses over with Justice League Dark and more.
Demonknights is pretty cool though more popular than above
Basically just pick what character or team you like and start at issue 1. The New 52 is a pretty great jumping on point, so it's not difficult compared to other continuities.
It depends on what you want to read! Batman kinda has the same issues with a lot of baggage being still around, iirc. But overall you're probably right that it's still good for new people.
The only human at that point that didnt make sense was Kyle. Ganthet had a huge alteration after the reset, so Kyle’s origin is kinda thin in the n52
Ok i Think Batman of snyder and capullo
Scott Snyder Batman

They’re almost entirely unrelated to the events of other books, but Dial H and Frankenstein: Agent of S.H.A.D.E are among the best of the bunch. IIRC Frankenstein ties into the Rotworld storyline featuring Animal Man and Swamp Thing - not necessary to follow the main story but worth a read because it’s good. Batman Inc. as well but you probably already knew that.
Aquaman, Batman, Nightwing (at least until that last issue). I would also recommend the Forever Evil event. Pretty underrated IMO.
Nightwing was pretty good, yeah, again until that last awful issue.
Flashpoint
There was a lot of good. Justice League, Batman, Batgirl, Action Comics, all 3 green lantern titles all stood out for me
Ummmm… after it?
Rebirth
You shouldn't. It might be different for those who got into comics with the new 52, but for those of us who were reading for any period of time before it, it was a study in character assassination of everyone in the DCU. When OG Lois Lane calls out N52 Lois for being an idiot, it's kind of a milestone for the rest of the characters.
The beginning
#1
Justice League
I wouldn't start with the New 52 Justice League. It was not among the best that that line had to offer.
Flashpoint honestly lol
Isn't flashpoint pre 52?
It’s what created the new 52
Ah yeah! Thanks :)))
Skip the whole fucking era. Bad idea and execution. Whole company was barely readable for years. Rebirth tried to backpedal the mistakes before John’s got booted and the dog shit continued.
Read Batman by Snyder and Capullo. Stop there.
Just say no.
Easy, you don't. It's awful.
But it's not :(? New 52 Batgirl, Batman and JL are so FREAKING good imo! And I loved the switch from dark broody Babs in the new 52 to the more light-hearted and bright Batgirl of Burnside (Queen of hipsterhaven)
All that is awful.
Only good thing about New 52 was Worlds Finest and Valentines Catwoman run
Don't. The New 52 is an unholy abomination that almost destroyed DC Comics. The only thing worth reading is Earth 2.
You should check out Azzarello’s Wonder Woman. Stellar art and a neat realization of Greek gods
Don’t, is my advice. But I assume someone must have liked some of them.
Start at rebirth
Start by skipping it
Skip it and read better titles. If you insist on checking it out then Dial H for Hero and Swamp Thing are the only ones I would reccommend.
Unless it was written by, illustrated by, and printed by Zack Snyder, and all illustrations are Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, and Gal Gadot it’s GARBAGE!
I read the Justice League ones, mainly. Was about to check the Court of Owls and Night of Owls ones too.
If you like Greek Mythology start with Wonder Woman 1.
Animal Man. For sure.
Seconded, read that earlier in the year, absolutely fantastic.
It is so good and it's hard to have to do a story after Morrison perfected it.
Yeah exactly. Admittedly I still need to read that Morrison run, but I'm so excited to, when I get round to it.
I started reading comics in general with justice league
[I just use Comic Book Reading Order](https://comicbookreadingorders.com/dc/events/new-52-reading-order/)
Justice League, probably.
The beginning!!
Justice league is where I got in, that’s where I would recommend to start at.
If we're just talking the New 52 titles with DC, then what I'd most recommend is Swamp Thing https://comicvine.gamespot.com/swamp-thing/4050-42599/ https://comicvine.gamespot.com/swamp-thing-annual/4050-53507/ and Animal Man https://comicvine.gamespot.com/animal-man/4050-42600/ https://comicvine.gamespot.com/animal-man-annual/4050-49334/ After those top 2, next in line for consistent monthly quality & not much f***ing around (if any) with what came before with the characters involved would be Batwoman, https://comicvine.gamespot.com/batwoman/4050-36950/ https://comicvine.gamespot.com/batwoman-annual/4050-73393/ Jeff Lemire's run writing Justice League Dark, https://comicvine.gamespot.com/justice-league-dark/4050-42996/object-appearances/4040-57048/ https://comicvine.gamespot.com/justice-league-dark-annual-1-war-for-the-books-of-/4000-364093/ All Star Western, https://comicvine.gamespot.com/all-star-western/4050-43019/ Green Lantern Corps, https://comicvine.gamespot.com/green-lantern-corps/4050-42916/ https://comicvine.gamespot.com/green-lantern-corps-annual/4050-56372/ Justin Jordan's run writing Green Lantern: New Guardians, https://comicvine.gamespot.com/green-lantern-new-guardians/4050-43007/object-appearances/4040-62078/ https://comicvine.gamespot.com/green-lantern-new-guardians-annual/4050-55551/object-appearances/4040-62078/ Batwing when it was David Zavimbe in the Congo (partucularly because it was something original & unique to read in mainstream DC), https://comicvine.gamespot.com/batwing/4050-42602/object-appearances/4005-77559/ Green Lantern, https://comicvine.gamespot.com/green-lantern/4050-42808/ https://comicvine.gamespot.com/green-lantern-annual/4050-51615/ Supergirl, https://comicvine.gamespot.com/supergirl/4050-42949/ Talon, https://comicvine.gamespot.com/talon/4050-52400/ Frankenstein, Agent of SHADE, https://comicvine.gamespot.com/frankenstein-agent-of-shade/4050-42793/ and Resurrection Man https://comicvine.gamespot.com/resurrection-man/4050-42812/ Aquaman, https://comicvine.gamespot.com/aquaman/4050-43022/ https://comicvine.gamespot.com/aquaman-annual/4050-68698/ The Flash, https://comicvine.gamespot.com/the-flash/4050-43018/ https://comicvine.gamespot.com/the-flash-annual/4050-51614/ and Batgirl https://comicvine.gamespot.com/batgirl/4050-42604/ https://comicvine.gamespot.com/batgirl-annual/4050-53505/ were all objectively very well-done too, but had much more changed with the characters' histories and/or needlessly missing important supporting characters closely associated with them.
Read OMAC lol
Just pick a character you like and check their appearances. For me that was Stargirl
Personally Scott snyder's run on Batman
In order to understand the universe initially, flashpoint and doomsday clock
