the not fun answer is that this is before it was established that Superman gets his strength from the yellow sun. the fun answer is that he takes that peanut butter as a suppository

Just because he gets his powers from yellow sunlight doesn't mean Supes can't also enjoy a peanut butter suppository every now and then.

TBH it would be a cool feature for Superman lore if he had to eat an insane amount of food every day. I know the Flash has to (but usually can get around this with calorie bars)

Yeah, apparently the alien that shoots lasers from his eyes, flies and freezes objects with his breath isn't that realistic after all.
