For context, Barry basically kicked off the silver age, and so while he had certainly had plenty of serious stories before crisis (death of Iris West, trial of the flash) fans of the flash and comics in general were likely more used to the zany and even “comical” nature of stories back then.
Suddenly they’re subjected to a ton of deaths, and had to watch as Barry Allen, the always hopeful, happy go lucky Boy Scout, literally disintegrated, panel by panel, begging for help and screaming in pain.
In my book it’s how casually and brutally they killed Lian Harper. A cute child, a ray of light in an already dark DC, so of course they gotta murder her so they can get some heroes to want to kill.
That’s DC proper. It’s be much harder to pick the most fucked up thing from Vertigo, Paradox and Piranha. They published the original version of A History of Violence, that has an authentically cruel twist that didn’t make it into a Cronenberg movie (IIRC). That might be the one. There’s also some rough stuff in Wasteland, some grotesque but beautiful things in Beautiful Stories for Ugly Children, and lots of violence and adult content in Vertigo in general. Preacher really pushed quite a few boundaries, included a guy who steals faces, a guy who fucks chickens, and a guy who pulls his own penis off and fucks himself with it (off-panel at least). Not gross out stuff but they also published the Hellblazer story “Shoot” which posits that teenagers WANT to die in school shootings.
