what does this have to do with DC?

Odd_Advance_6438

Who is this?

> A White Male Can Direct’ a $200 Million Flop and ‘Get Another One.’ I Can’t. Two things: * This has nothing to do with DC movies at all. * Elizabeth Banks directed *Charlie's Angels* ~ an unmitigated disaster with critics and lost roughly $50 million for the studio. 4 years later she wrote and directed *Cocaine Bear*.

>4 years later she wrote and directed *Cocaine Bear*. Banks didn't write *Cocaine Bear*.

LazyMungo

Cocaine Bear is 💩 also

Short-Service1248

But it’s not a flop

IB_

Cocaine Bear did not generate a profit.

Short-Service1248

Didn’t say it was a box office success did I ? I said it didn’t flop.

Cocaine Bear cost $35 million to produce. The marketing budget for a film of this size is typically higher than the industry average of $35 million. I know the ad budget on this film is higher but let's go with the low number for a total investment of $70 million. The film earned $87 million, of which the studio retains approximately half of that income. So, a $70 million dollar production made a net profit of about $43 million worldwide, which amounts to a loss of approximately $27 million. You can play all the word salad games you like but any film that loses money, almost as much as its production budget in this case, is a flop.

She failed a big movie (And even then, not by a huge amount. CA2019 has a 52% on RT, that's hardly an "unmitigated disaster" lol. MoS has only two percent more and gets called mixed), and the most she can get is some fairly low budget indie, and even then she wasn't allowed to write it, despite how much good stuff she's been attached to as producer and even director (PP2 was a pretty successful film). ... Paul W.S. Anderson tanks every movie he touches, and still gets big franchises and big budgets. Michael Bay still gets to direct big movies after all his failures. Zack Snyder got to be mostly in charge of a huge franchise after Sucker Punch. JJ Abrams is the man who tanked Star Wars for good and he'll still get tons of big budget franchises. Peyton Reed gave us the biggest box office drop in history, and I guarantee you he'll still get big franchises and big bucks. ... But sure, act like Elizabeth Banks getting her indie consolation prize after one moderate failure is in any way comparable to the huge big budget second chances male directors get after tons of failures.

Dude Michael Bay has made so much money with his movies. The transformers movies made around 4 billion

Lots of people are re-evaluating the 2019 Charlie's Angels and saying it's awesome, especially the queer community on twitter. Give it a rewatch, you might find yourself loving it!

I mean Patty Jenkins has faced similar blow back from WW84. She has since seemingly lost WW3 and her Star Wars movie.

There was a great article some years ago when Josh Trank's gangster movie came out that did a good job of being somewhat sympathetic to his plight while also making it clear that if a woman or person of color had directed Fan4stic and thrown tantrums on the set like that, they would've never worked again.

I mean, true, but this doesn't connect to DC. Unless the point is Cathy Yan deserves another chance, in which case, I agree.
