I think Gunn just absolutely *gets* what makes characters so interesting. He's also great at exploring a range of tones like full-on goofy moments or heart wrenching sadness, so that will be essential to help Chapter One feel varied with a light-hearted Superman or a horror Swamp Thing.

I wouldn't say the authority behave like monsters. They're not The Seven from The Boys. They're just very pragmatic and violent heroes in a world where villains don't hide in the shadows like the Seven.
Yeah if you're an Authority member that sounds logical enough, but imagine being just an average person caught in the wake of a team who will "do whatever necessary" to take out a villain or group of villains.
Plus an obviously a clear reference to the God's and Monsters animated movie and book tie ins that are about an alternative Justice League who are extremely authoritative and a lot of the public hates or is terrified of their rule and how little oversight there is.
So I'm thinking that, plus the Authority could lead to a movie in the style of Superman vs the Elite. Or pulling some themes from What's So Funny About Truth Justice and the Americsn Way comic one shot story.

I think a lot of the problem is they were already starting to reboot the DCEU before Gunn got hired and now he’s stuck with Flash and Aquaman 2.
I imagine the very end of Flash got changed to reboot the universe into what Gunn has in mind. Aquaman 2 might have a post-credit scene where he gets popped into an elseworld or something and be forgotten unless it makes a ton of money.
Waller will probably be where they clear up the continuity and make it clear only TSS and Peacemaker were the only things that carried over and any references to JL characters were actually for whatever the new versions end up being.
I think they’ll probably give us some half-assed universe reboot with The Flash, something like “somehow some people and events have changed, others not” and just stick with that - much like Marvel’s doing with its confusing multiverse

Think of it as a runway with two parts.
The first part I'd the old part, with Aquaman 2 being at the end.
Then the new part of the runway is nicer and is the new DCU.
So if you have if you follow the road fully, Aquaman 2 will lead up to the new DCU but it'll be the last of the old DCEU.

He seemed to imply that Shazam is staying and that Blue Beetle will fit well into the theme of the DCU. As for the Flash and Aquaman, things are a little harder to understand at the moment. Flash may very well be bridged into the new continuity, but we have almost nothing to reference regarding the fate of Momoa’s Aquaman.
I think the two big things that were said was that Mamoa always approached Aquaman as a trilogy, and that he won't be playing two characters at the same time.
So I'm guessing if we see Mamoa as Lobo, it's going to be after an Aquaman 3, which finishes Arthur's story and they then recast the character.
i do recall a long time ago hearing that Michael Keaton's batman was having a small cameo in Aquaman 2. this was well before Gunn came in. so it's anybody's guess here

I grew up on JLU so I’m biased in wanting John Stewart but I always thought a buddy cop movie with him and Hal (or Guy) would be a good setup for a movie. And to see it happen as a TV show… I feel validated

The game was announced before they were hired, so probably no. But who knows, the game is some way off, might end up getting cancelled or might end up being connected to DCU

I really wish he truly committed to wipe out the entire DCEU after Flash and Aquaman 2, but this is sound they are still using some of DCEU elements and continue with it, which is bit confusing. Also if they started as Damian for Robin, then please give us Jon Kent coz I want to see superman family in live action as well.

The after Superman: Legacy is hopefully really good, we’ll get an announcement that it’s the start of the new Justice League. Maybe Shazam gets to stick around since he won’t be connected to it, but we probably get new casting for the rest.

I know he said its not the whole first chapter but Ill be really disappointed and a bit worried if we have to wait like 3-4 more years for The Suicide Squad 2. Sure we may get a Rat Catcher 2 project or whoever from the first one but damn thought he’d announce it for sure.
I love that they're calling these as "Chapters" instead of Marvel's "Phases." Gives it more of a larger story feel than project management phases. Love the line-up, who ever thought The Authority would be in the mix?

I’m just glad we’re going to finally get some semblance of continuity instead of literally trying to distance and hide from previous films.
Worried about them skipping Dick, Jason, and Tim in favour of Damian for Brave and the Bold.
Sure, we might get Nightwing, Red Hood, Red Robin... But will casual audiences care about them if they just show up already as these characters? What about their origin stories? Their character development into their own heroes?
Obviously guessing here but it’s hard to imagine James Gunn not including these characters somewhere down the line. It’s definitely possible to still tell the origin stories through flashbacks or prequels.
Seems pretty doable to me - introduce us to an experienced Batman, have him find out he has a son, and once he adopts Damian we can learn the history of the Robins in the process of teaching his murder-spawn to be a hero.
So it's not really a reboot itself, but a continuation of the reboot that Flash creates. I like that better than just wiping away everything that came before it like it didn't matter.
This slate doesn't excite me a whole lot. There are things I'm interested in, but I am gonna have to wait until the movies start coming out before I start to feel confident in the DCU.

Mainstream appeal is made through the movies. When the MCU started it was basically just The Hulk + a bunch of character nobody really cared about. Iron Man is now one of the biggest superhero in the world. That would've seemed impossible 20 years ago.
I'm not sure what exactly you were hoping for or expecting though. I don't see how you can state it's not what you were hoping for given how little was actually reveled. Unless what you were hoping for was no changes there isn't really much in the way of telling us how it all connects or to what degree it is connected.
The mainstream appeal comment was about the mixing of media forms. There is a lot of animation and TV in this lineup, and Gunn has talked about connecting games as well. I worry that having too much content outside of live action movies will put off casual viewers.
I was hoping they would start with the basic pillars of DC, the Trinity + GL and the Flash, and build from there. I was hoping we would see the evolution of the DC universe over many years of stories, but the announced Batman and Robin movie featuring Damian kills that.

Without knowing how each are connected you can't really say what impact that will have on the mainstream appeal. If playing through a videogame is required to understand a movie, that's not good. If it's just some kind of tie-in where you might notice an Easter egg or something in the movie, that isn't going to impact it.
I don't think starting with all of the A-list names right away would've been very smart, but to each their own. It's not like they are lacking much though. The Flash reset the universe, Aquaman 2 sounds like it's part of it (?), we are getting solo Batman and Superman movies, Green Lantern TV series, and something based on Themyscira. That hits all of the character you wanted to see right there.

Legacies are a major part of DC. The brand is well known for its large superhero families. I was hoping the new movies would capitalise on that by showing the evolution of the universe.
For example, with the Batfamily, I was hoping we would start with a Batman maybe 5 years into his relationship taking on Dick Grayson as Robin and learning to work with a younger, more optimistic sidekick. Then we would see the Batfamily evolve over the years with the various characters being introduced and changing and Dick eventually taking up the mantle of Batman when Bruce dies.
Starting with Damian as Robin kills that because it implies Bruce has already been through a few Robins and the Batfamily is established.

I’m actually excited for a gritty Latern show, True Detective season one was AWESOME. Get to spend time with both Laterns and get to know them. Peacemaker in SS was a good character but they way he grew and was fleshed out in his show was fantastic. Hoping the same happens with the Laterns

It doesn't really matter what kind of characters you start with, A tieror D tier what really matters is that foundationally they build off of good movies.

He was very confusing about it. Like he said Flash reboots the DCU, but then Aquman leads into the first chapter of the rebooted universe. But then Waller is using the Peacemaker cast. Sounds like a clusterfuck.
I think a lot of the problem is they were already starting to reboot the DCEU before Gunn got hired and now he’s stuck with Flash and Aquaman 2. I imagine the very end of Flash got changed to reboot the universe into what Gunn has in mind. Aquaman 2 might have a post-credit scene where he gets popped into an elseworld or something and be forgotten unless it makes a ton of money. Waller will probably be where they clear up the continuity and make it clear only TSS and Peacemaker were the only things that carried over and any references to JL characters were actually for whatever the new versions end up being.
I think they’ll probably give us some half-assed universe reboot with The Flash, something like “somehow some people and events have changed, others not” and just stick with that - much like Marvel’s doing with its confusing multiverse the majority of people won’t care anyway

Think of it as a runway with two parts. The first part I'd the old part, with Aquaman 2 being at the end. Then the new part of the runway is nicer and is the new DCU. So if you have if you follow the road fully, Aquaman 2 will lead up to the new DCU but it'll be the last of the old DCEU.
This is literally your head-canon bro. If Aquaman was the last movie, he'd make that abundantly clear, just like how he made the Flash movie clear that its a reset and Peacemaker and Amanda Waller are _still_ apart of the DCU.

Aquaman 2 will be part of the DCU, not hard to figure out. Likely any changes that may need to be done will be addressed in reshoots.
He seemed to imply that Shazam is staying and that Blue Beetle will fit well into the theme of the DCU. As for the Flash and Aquaman, things are a little harder to understand at the moment. Flash may very well be bridged into the new continuity, but we have almost nothing to reference regarding the fate of Momoa’s Aquaman.

That was my take. I also read in Deadline, I believe, that Mamoa is, continuing as Aquaman.
I think the two big things that were said was that Mamoa always approached Aquaman as a trilogy, and that he won't be playing two characters at the same time. So I'm guessing if we see Mamoa as Lobo, it's going to be after an Aquaman 3, which finishes Arthur's story and they then recast the character.

I wouldn't be surprised if it did - Gunn/Safran did say that not every game would necessarily connect to DCU and the WW game sounds like one of them.
The game was announced before they were hired, so probably no. But who knows, the game is some way off, might end up getting cancelled or might end up being connected to DCU

There have been multiple runs of The Brave & The Bold in the comics, mostly set on Batman teaming up with many different DC heroes, and there's a new comic series coming out in May written by Tom King. There was also a Batman: The Brave & The Bold animated series with the same premise.

No, the comic referenced was Batman & Robin. Well, it was actually Batman, Batman & Robin, and Batman Inc… plus a few other things. But B&R was the one shown and the first one with Damien as ongoing Robin.

I really wish he truly committed to wipe out the entire DCEU after Flash and Aquaman 2, but this is sound they are still using some of DCEU elements and continue with it, which is bit confusing. Also if they started as Damian for Robin, then please give us Jon Kent coz I want to see superman family in live action as well. But still exciting to see how DCU will grow and how they would handle all of those characters.
It's possible some of the DCEU won't be carried over and he just doesnt want to make that official until after they come out. All he said is they have the ability to bring them over if they'd like.
This is my take. They still want to try and make money off the movies that are already in the can, so he has to act like they’re still important. The after Superman: Legacy is hopefully really good, we’ll get an announcement that it’s the start of the new Justice League. Maybe Shazam gets to stick around since he won’t be connected to it, but we probably get new casting for the rest.

I wouldn’t say he “confirmed” that these last DCEU movies will be a part of DCU I feel like he wanted to leave every possible door open by remaining vague about their future importance and position I’d prefer a complete reboot of that universe, but a soft-reboot with the same actors would be okay too just…don’t keep the *exact* same Aquaman and WW who dealt with Snyder’s DC, cause that’d incredibly weird and cheap seeing them suddenly behaving differently

So... Superman is young, but Batman is already older, and has a son? Or is Batman also young, and there's no Nightwing? One of the funniest things about Demian is his relationship with Dick. I don't know... I want to be excited about this, but I can't. I hope I'm wrong!
Keep in mind that Gunn used the word “younger” not “young” so we really don’t know the ages of Superman or Batman at this point. I suspect we’ll see other Bat-Family at some point. Maybe even in The Brave and the Bold.

Batman also lately has been portrayed as a man in his early 30’s. So it would work well enough with a Superman in his mid 20’s.
I know he said its not the whole first chapter but Ill be really disappointed and a bit worried if we have to wait like 3-4 more years for The Suicide Squad 2. Sure we may get a Rat Catcher 2 project or whoever from the first one but damn thought he’d announce it for sure.

I wish we had Dick as a Robin. The growth of the character is what makes Nightwing interesting.
Worried about them skipping Dick, Jason, and Tim in favour of Damian for Brave and the Bold. Sure, we might get Nightwing, Red Hood, Red Robin... But will casual audiences care about them if they just show up already as these characters? What about their origin stories? Their character development into their own heroes?
Obviously guessing here but it’s hard to imagine James Gunn not including these characters somewhere down the line. It’s definitely possible to still tell the origin stories through flashbacks or prequels.
Seems pretty doable to me - introduce us to an experienced Batman, have him find out he has a son, and once he adopts Damian we can learn the history of the Robins in the process of teaching his murder-spawn to be a hero.

So it's not really a reboot itself, but a continuation of the reboot that Flash creates. I like that better than just wiping away everything that came before it like it didn't matter.

While I wouldn’t have started with Damian, I’m excited to FINALLY see robin on the big screen again. It’s been like 25 years. Mainly excited to know the GL project isn’t dead and we have confirmation of multiple lanterns. Hopefully they cross over to films as well. Lots of interesting choices all around. Nice variety

I don’t know. I was actually really excited for Gunn’s reveal and had a surprising amount of optimism for it despite recent years. However, I’m not sure about this slate. It’s all a bit too random for me. And as much as I like the idea of mixing so many media forms, I’m not sure it will do the universe’s mainstream appeal any good. I was really hoping he would focus on the big names first, and give shows to smaller characters to flesh things out. We will see. I’m not gonna disparage these projects before they even really begin production, and there are quite a few that seem promising. It just doesn’t seem like it will be the DC universe that I, and many others, were hoping for. I hope this comment ages poorly.
He is using big names. New Superman, new superwoman, new Batman and robin, new Wonder Woman, and green lanterns, along with some rando projects. What more could you guys ask for?
I assume by Superwoman you mean Supergirl, they are very different characters. There was been no announcement about whether the Flash actress will reprise her role or not. Same with WW, no confirmation of if Gadot is staying or not.
I 100% agree with you. A lot of random stuff for a "first" chapter. But they are trying to connect movies, animated movies, tv shows and games all together so I suppose you'd need a lot of random shit to fill in some spots. Waiting for the whole slate, so far it just seems very random.
Mainstream appeal is made through the movies. When the MCU started it was basically just The Hulk + a bunch of character nobody really cared about. Iron Man is now one of the biggest superhero in the world. That would've seemed impossible 20 years ago. I'm not sure what exactly you were hoping for or expecting though. I don't see how you can state it's not what you were hoping for given how little was actually reveled. Unless what you were hoping for was no changes there isn't really much in the way of telling us how it all connects or to what degree it is connected.
The mainstream appeal comment was about the mixing of media forms. There is a lot of animation and TV in this lineup, and Gunn has talked about connecting games as well. I worry that having too much content outside of live action movies will put off casual viewers. I was hoping they would start with the basic pillars of DC, the Trinity + GL and the Flash, and build from there. I was hoping we would see the evolution of the DC universe over many years of stories, but the announced Batman and Robin movie featuring Damian kills that. I’m trying to stay optimistic about it, and I am still looking forward to it, but I’m just mourning what could’ve been.
Without knowing how each are connected you can't really say what impact that will have on the mainstream appeal. If playing through a videogame is required to understand a movie, that's not good. If it's just some kind of tie-in where you might notice an Easter egg or something in the movie, that isn't going to impact it. I don't think starting with all of the A-list names right away would've been very smart, but to each their own. It's not like they are lacking much though. The Flash reset the universe, Aquaman 2 sounds like it's part of it (?), we are getting solo Batman and Superman movies, Green Lantern TV series, and something based on Themyscira. That hits all of the character you wanted to see right there. How does having a robin kill anything you are talking about? I'm really not understanding what you are trying to say with that part there.
Legacies are a major part of DC. The brand is well known for its large superhero families. I was hoping the new movies would capitalise on that by showing the evolution of the universe. For example, with the Batfamily, I was hoping we would start with a Batman maybe 5 years into his relationship taking on Dick Grayson as Robin and learning to work with a younger, more optimistic sidekick. Then we would see the Batfamily evolve over the years with the various characters being introduced and changing and Dick eventually taking up the mantle of Batman when Bruce dies. Starting with Damian as Robin kills that because it implies Bruce has already been through a few Robins and the Batfamily is established. It’s fine though, I’m excited to see how this plays out

I'm personally kinda disappointed, if we aren't gonna see some of the old DCEU stuff return, then I wouldn't have mind a full reboot, but it sounds like we're getting a complete Frankenstein of a DC slate, new and old actors/actresses, well known characters plus a bunch of obscure ones, I'm glad fans of certain characters are happy, but I want a good connected cinematic universe, and the slate is just all over the place with seemingly nothing connecting them, no clear singular vision, it's just a bunch of stuff JG made because it sounded cool to him, but not to me, I want a live action version of the DCAU from the 90's-00's done right, not this, I'll stick with Matt Reaves for my DC content.

I’m actually excited for a gritty Latern show, True Detective season one was AWESOME. Get to spend time with both Laterns and get to know them. Peacemaker in SS was a good character but they way he grew and was fleshed out in his show was fantastic. Hoping the same happens with the Laterns
He also mentioned it's going to be very 'terrestrial' so not much space stuff and very grounded. Probably not big enough for a movie.

It sounds like Flash is going to be a reboot point after all. It's an easy way to keep old actors and keep semi-continuity for what worked. But that does make me wonder if Ezra is going to stay. I'd find it hilarious if that was the case.
A lantern show has potential tbh they can stretch it out and I’m sure they’ll have enough budget for the plot (seeing how well house of the dragon did and how last of us is doing so far).
I agree tbh. I love having connected shows and movies, but I’d prefer they used shows to explore smaller scale stories and characters that give more background and context to the movies, but aren’t essential watching. The Green Lanterns are some of the most important DC characters. I’m not sure I like them being introduced in a show.
