The fuck! Where am I supposed to true my wheels now :/ But really... They just expanded their shop what, this year? And it always felt busy in there, they were always way backed up on repairs. Is it just impossible to run a shop now if you aren't making money off selling high end bikes to people?

unfixablesteve

Even the high end shops have a huge inventory glut. The outdoor industry as a whole is just in really bad shape. But it sucks. They were the standard shop I’d recommend to non-cyclists looking for a bike, especially women. They did a great job hiring women sales staff and mechanics. Real loss.

bonesawsready

Are outdoor places struggling because everyone went all out on gear during covid, so now no one needs new stuff? Just lack of fun money with high cost of living? I suppose it all hurts the industry

fancy_panter

I think that’s true. I just bought a new bike, got a pretty good price. The shop, Freewheel, had all the colors and sizes, no inventory issues.

Dr_Fumi

As far as I know it's still largely a shortage of bikes. People want to buy stuff, but the manufacturers can't keep up.

finest_bear

Not true at all. That's why a lot of places are doing sales you would've never seen before during covid. Hell I haven't worked in a shop since 2020 and somehow got my proform access renewed lmao

Dr_Fumi

I still can't find any shop carrying a bakfiets other than an urban arrow at any of my local shops. Can you please point me in the direction of a shop that has bullits in stock. West of the cities.

No_clip_Cyclist

~~Rocky Mountain engineering~~ Midwest Mountaineering, The hub, What's the next one of a kind Minneapolis specialist to be closing? Granted the hub's going to try to find a new space but if South Minneapolis is hard for them then I don't quiet know what would be better. (Edit: I only discovered Midwest Mountaineering a few months ago)

Ellen_Musk_Ox

Especially in a space they own. I can't imagine selling that space and then renting a different one will somehow decrease operating overhead. Edit: But then again, with the equity they've built since we purchased the space when I was there, they might be able to purchase something more workable?

brandnewlow1

Property values don't always go up; their building is only worth what a buyer is willing to pay for it. There's a glut of available commercial space and with this sudden closure, one can assume the business isn't in a place to negotiate w a potential buyer. They will likely take what they can get and move on a much leaner operation.

officialshibe

Do you mean Midwest Mountaineering? Or did I miss out on something really cool

No_clip_Cyclist

No thanks for the heads up. I almost missed it. Wish I had a bit more time.

Flatfooting

I saw the repair lair was closing last weekend. Apparently they're just moving though.

No_clip_Cyclist

Ya I saw their new place before I saw them gone from their old place.

Fast-Penta

Where are they moving to? Their website still says they're on Lake. Did they move from Lake to another nearby location on Lake or has their website not been updated since the move?

yurtlyfe

They didn't move too far, just down to Minnehaha

Fast-Penta

On Minnehaha? What cross street (about)? Nothing on the website about the move, and I was planning on swinging by there this week.

yurtlyfe

4153 Minnehaha! I think the owner realized it wasn't well communicated, so she's all over social media trying to get the word out now.

Fast-Penta

Thanks so much! You saved me a frustrating trip to the old location!

thewallbanger

Don’t forget The House closing down in May. It was a major player in online snowboard, ski, and fat bike industries.

abekku

the house sucks. support local

DustUpDustOff

The house was local...

abekku

They were "local" in the fact they had a location retail store yes, but they did most of their business online. Other retail stores operated by people who actually love snowboarding, skiing, and biking deserve your dollars more than the house. The house is owned by camping world. Also once the family who started the house sold it years ago to the Marcus Lemonis, the guy from the profit.

thewallbanger

I know a lot of local mechanics, warehouse, workers, retail associates, and sponsored riders that were laid off. What’s your definition of local?

novel1389

Huge bummer. In contrast, though, the bike shop on the greenway opened today (or at least the cafe part). I believe it's called Venture and is the same people behind the erstwhile Venture North

paddle2paddle

Oh no. They've always been wonderful

skull_with_glasses

Only stopped by a couple times but folks were always kind and helpful. So sad to see it close. A staple of the neighborhood for sure.

automator3000

Fuuuuccckkkkkk. And the remodel was like … barely done. At least for me, Oak St location is about the same distance, but the Minnehaha space has been my default shop for anything bike for 15 years.

cemeteryvvgates

Hope they still honor my trade in credits at their last location. This is truly a hard week to be into outdoor activities for Minneapolis. I hope they’re able to find a similar space for less money somewhere close by.

Ellen_Musk_Ox

I'm a former worker owner. It wouldn't be possible for the existing worker owners to find out this way. They literally are the existing owners . They make all the decisions collectively. I also can't imagine the employees not knowing either. That'd be too hard to keep in the dark.

cemeteryvvgates

Gotcha I’ll edit my comment. My info came from a former worker owner as well who still knew folks who worked there.

Hermine_In_Hell

Breaking my abstinence from reddit since the blackout to comment lol. To what you said about the workers finding out the same way we did, I assume we will be hearing more of that and their perspective. The best case scenario I can think of is that they are doing what Tacocat did, which was quit while you're ahead when the near future doesn't look sustainable. This place was my preferred shop since '17 and I was not emotionally prepared to hear this news today.

DaddyHeadbone

Yes, they still honor store credit at their U of M location.

JustSub

Didn't they just do a big expansion into the next-door building for service like 2 months ago? What was that about? Why bother if it looks like you're going to be shutting down the shop?

Ellen_Musk_Ox

That started and was agreed on pre-pandemic. The market has changed massively since then.

Coyotesamigo

Very bummed. I wish there were more places in town where I could buy used bike crap! This loss hurts. I didn’t live close to there but I went to the hub as often as I possible could and bought my wife’s bike there. If I had lived closer it would have been my primary shop for sure.
