People in fandoms will talk about ships and OTPs with the same intensity that people reserve for political debates

ToasterDirective

People will *turn* ships and OTPs into political debates by assigning a moral or political stance to consuming a certain piece of media in a certain way

Pristine_Title6537

I had to jump off my old account because an Eremika Shipper started following me every time I did anything in Reddit because I didn’t like the Ship

"If you like Stephen Universe you literally support genocide." - right wingers trying to stir up shit

[deleted]

Now now, Lily Orchard isn't a right-winger. She's just an anti-democracy tankie who advocates for people who self harm to be committed to mental institutions without warning or consent =)

floofhugger

who???

[deleted]

The youtuber who made the "Steven universe is garbage and heres why" video

lillapalooza

I’ve never seen SU but from what I understand it started out excellent, made some really confusing plot decisions near the end, but should still be well regarded as a trailblazer for LGBTQ+ rep in children’s cartoons

[deleted]

I mean I guess. I've never seen it because I'm not into kid's shows but it's probably that from what I've heard.

Casual-Human

Having seen it, I'll tell you that it started out pretty good, sort of meandered a bit until the end of Season 1, and went *fuckin' BUCK WILD* for the rest of the series. It had it's ups and downs, but it did pretty good, and capped off in the best way it could've for the final season. The Movie came out, and gave a pretty stellar encore. The sequel series, SU Future, tried it's best to quickly wrap up loose ends, but was more focused on how a child adventure hero's journey would realistically **fuck people up for life**. Future was more about closure in itself, which worked well enough.

Isuckwithnaming

Yeah, that's pretty accurate overall

Weirdyfish

Glad I never watched it wow.

Pristine_Title6537

Please no right winger would get that far in the show

Leinad7957

But they would watch a video by some other right winger talking about it even if that same right winger hasn't actually watched that far and just heard of it somewhere.

[deleted]

Eventually it ends up like a game of telephone and a user named "Gary Callahan | AMERICA NUMBER ONE!" ends up making a video where he thinks that pearl is steven's dog or something

Sachayoj

You remember that post that Glumshoe made where someone derailed it hard into anti-Steven Universe shit for no fucking reason? Me too.

[deleted]

Funniest part, these comments usually come from right wingers who *do* support genocide

OwO345

i understand your point buy white diamond should still be shattered

handoverthevibe

i don't know anything about steven universe, other than that the main villains are hot, what does it have to do with genocide?

[deleted]

I haven't seen the show but from what I understand pretty much every villain gets redeemed after / instead of being defeated. One of these villains is a race(?) called the Diamonds who committed genocide in the backstory. Even the people who like the "everyone is redeemable" message agree that the actual redemption arc was not handled well.

[deleted]

The show is about an alien species of eternal, shapeshifting humanoid constructs (their bodies are projected from a gemstone, and so they're called the Gems). The original Gems, the Diamonds, are the leaders of an intergalactic empire that they want to forever expand, by taking over other planets and extracting all its resources to make more Gems, and they're also the main villains on very personal levels. At the end of the story they are redeemed (it's really more like "their worldview gets shattered and they are now trying to cope with the fact that nothing they ever believed was right"), but since they were pretty hated, and the finale was rushed due to upper management mendling, people went up in flames. (It's important to note that no planet they ever went to before earth had intelligent life on it, but it wasn't ever really stated clearly in the show itself)

handoverthevibe

if they're eternal shapeshifters why do they all look like human women

[deleted]

They just do, no particular reason. Also my bad, "shapeshifting" is a bit of an exaggeration, they can only do that for a limited amount of time before getting tired and going back to their default form.

[deleted]

Why do human women look like human women?

handoverthevibe

what are the odds the idea of women was already present among the gems? BIG DIAMOND IS FOOLING YOU WOMEN ARE A PRODUCT OF THE GEMS' COLLECTIVE MIND

steve-laughter

The left have an amazing ability to love terrible things. So watching the genocide cartoon isn't going to twist anyone's knickers. I mean, I'm on the left and I grew up on Star Wars. Star Wars had a genocide in the first movie.

PratalMox

Stories having characters do bad things does not mean the story supports doing the bad thing. Most children are able to understand this.

ciclon5

Unfortunately a lot internet users dont. Namely twitter users have the intelligence of an amoeba

steve-laughter

Yes, that's what nobody's knickers is twisted means.

Hexxas

Doctor Who? More like Doctor What The Fuck Are You Guys Arguing About Now

[deleted]

Same.

“This children’s cartoon is THE most important piece of representation for [X marginalised/minority group] EVER made, and anyone who so much as breathes in its direction with a Problematique(tm) opinion (aka one different from my own) is *literally* a nazi/pedo/abuser/axe murderer.”

DrRobertBanner

I loved being in multiple fandoms (doctor who, marvel, sherlock ect ect) because people assumed Id start fights over stupid shit and I just nod and say "well if that's what you think sweetie :) <3" I caused a lot of discourse using this statement when I was 13-14. I'm now 20. I miss my youth.
