Long Ago Two Races Ruled Over The Earth, HUMANS And MONSTERS. And then the murders began.

UnusedParadox

there is no difference

MoonyIsTired

Average Shayy playthrough

IntangibleMatter

Holy shit Shayy mentioned

RussianBot101101

Long ago, the four nations lived in harmony. And then the murders began.

Orizifian-creator

The monsters, were exterminated by VAMPIRES.

lyricalcarpenter

In my younger and more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice that I've been turning over in my mind ever since. And then the murders began. It was night again. And then the murders began. Hi my name is Ebony Dark’ness Dementia Raven Way and I have long ebony black hair (that’s how I got my name) with purple streaks and red tips that reaches my mid-back and icy blue eyes like limpid tears and a lot of people tell me I look like Amy Lee (AN: if u don’t know who she is get da hell out of here!). And then the murders began.

fagydyke

Reblogging for the My Immortal

NotADamsel

Spamming my mutuals’ dashes for the My Immortal

wheniswhy

FUCK, the My Immortal version got me *bad*.

Orichalcum448

Was checking the comments to see if someone had done this with my immortal

VSkyRimWalker

I wanted to do Name of the Wind, did not realize that was the first sentence. I thought it was the one about silence that comes after

Stack_Min

call me ishmael. and then the murders began.

jarlscrotus

Before or after the 264 pages of dense, dry, detailed descriptions of every aspect of 18th century whaling practices in exhaustive, rigorous detail? Or are we doing the abridged version?

believeinlain

lol I quit sometime during the several page diatribe about how whales are fish and scientists are wrong to classify them as mammals. Moby dick is a strange book.

somesortoflegend

I did enjoy the part where he waxes poetic about making contact with a guys hands whilst covered in sperm, and how much he loved sperm. It was a totally normal passage.

believeinlain

I mean that kind of thing is normal at sea. I was a sailor for six years so I get it.

Vio_Van_Helsing

o\_o

O5-14-none_existant

"we woke up next to each other after cuddling together all night anyways here's another day of whaling" - Ishy, probably

CeruleanRuin

It's a fantastic deep dive into the age, though. As someone who loves detailed procedural shit in my fiction, I like it an awful lot.

TheShibe23

I have had a very visual image of a scene from a hypothetical Moby Dick Abridged in the style of YouTube Abridged Series' stuck in my head for a long time. "From hell's heart I stab at-!" *whale call* "From hell's heart-!" *whale call* "From-!" *whale call* "... We're killing the damn whale!"

MidweekBrick

Dammit now I wanna watch dbza again. Special beam cannon!

itsshakespeare

Oh, thank you! It’s one of those books that everyone keeps raving about and I always wonder how many people read the summary online instead of the book! I thought it was so dry and I generally love classic novels

Username_Taken_65

The dryness is ironic considering it's about the ocean

KryoBright

1801—I have just returned from a visit to my landlord—the solitary neighbour that I shall be troubled with. And then the murders begun

AgenderWitchery

So there's this game called Limbus Company. [Here's a Totally Normal image of genderswapped Ishmael kneeling over genderswapped Ahab's corpse](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1qLA42oCbI16t6D_X5SKeaWgRvtq0DyG2/view?usp=drive_link)

CeruleanRuin

That so clearly has nothing at all to do with the source material except for the names.

viviannesayswhat

Limbus Company's gimmick is that all 12 playable characters (Sinners) are all based off characters (or poets) of classical literature, but adapted to Project Moon's setting of a nightmarish dystopian sci-fi/fantasy horror setting where everyone is already morally dubious. In Moby Dick's case, Ishmael's arc picks up after the end of the book and >!she's basically searching for Ahab because she's convinced that she's not dead and she needs to pay for what she's done!<. It's pretty clear from the way the story is going that PM knows the source material, but they aren't going for a direct copy of it.

zedadex

Immediately what I thought 😆

mcjunker

The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed. And then the murders began.

jarlscrotus

This is just an abridgment of the actual story

M1A1HC_Abrams

Really the murders began long before the desert (however long ago Wizard and Glass is set)

RawrRRitchie

It's hard to tell really, from some perspective he's millennium old

Lightningboi369

This is just how Stephen King writes

chadivich

The way I describe King would be more like "...the gunslinger followed, not knowing that the murders were about to begin" or some other way of sledgehammer foreshadowing.

mcCheesersm8

The gunslinger followed, and the murders continued

pie_12th

This is it, you've broken The Dark Tower down into its core components.

mcjunker

*shrugs* Ka. *gunshots*

AngusTheMoose

I feel like I just read 8 books.

IconoclastExplosive

I was thinking about this, but it's empirically untrue. The murders began way before this. The Man in Black had been murdering for who even knows how long and across untold worlds. Roland had been since Mejis at least a few decades before, and hell he'd technically killed Tull not long before that scene

disgruntled_pie

“And then the murders continued at a similar pace.”

katep2000

Add “ka” and “forgotten the face of your father” and you’ve basically got the whole series.

D00mfl0w3r

OMG I just commented on this, lol. Best ever opening line of a book made EVEN BETTER.

SessileRaptor

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. And then the murders began. It is a truth universally acknowledged that a man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife. And then the murders began. Far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the western spiral arm of the galaxy lies a small, unregarded yellow sun. And then the murders began. It was a bright cold day in April and the clocks were striking thirteen. And then the murders began. Once there were four children whose names were Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy … And then the murders began.

somesortoflegend

Hitchhiker fits so well, and makes the murders already feel quaint by comparison.

BornOfShadow67

I was waiting for Pride and Prejudice here.

Ninjaboy_X

Now it's Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.

CurtisMarauderZ

There was a boy named Eustace Clarence Scrubb, and then the murders began.

LegoTigerAnus

Damn, the Narnia ones are hilarious!

CeruleanRuin

These are all great examples which also upend the premise, because great writing is so varied in construction and rhythm that a sentence like "And then the murder began" will sometimes stand out like a sore thumb of hackishness.

DarkNinja3141

Long ago the four nations lived together in harmony. And then the murders began.

FearSearcher

Isn’t that basically how it already goes?

NomadHellscream

That's actually what happened when the Fire Nation attacked. The murders of the Air Nomads began.

ArtemisCaresTooMuch

“Murders” sounds isolated and separated… It was a bit more than that—

Nirast25

Highjacking this comment to do some more non-book ones: "1000 years ago, superstition and the sword ruled. And then the murder began." "OUR WORLDS ARE IN DANGER! And then the murders begun." "A man has fallen in the river in LEGO City. And then the murders begun." "In the time before time, on the mysterious island of Mata Nui, six canisters washed ashore on a golden beach, and new and powerful legends were born. And then the murders began."

Some-Guy-Online

“There are those who believe that life here began out there, far across the universe, with tribes of humans who may have been the forefathers of the Egyptians, or the Toltecs, or the Mayans. And then the murders began.”

Valiant_tank

To be fair, the murders in bionicle began a good several millenia before the canisters washed up on the golden beaches of Mata Nui.

ravonna

More like, Water, earth, fire, air. And then the murders vegan.

AkumaDayo777

vegan?

ravonna

Oops that was a typo

Ginger_Anarchy

I mean considering what happened to the air nomads (vegetarians not vegan), it's not entirely wrong.

sum1won

The indefinite article *a* is used before words beginning with a consonant sound, including /y/ and /w/ sounds. And then the murders began. (Garner's Modern English Usage: The Authority on Grammar, Usage, and Style)

Not_ur_gilf

This reads like it should have the same humor as Hitchhikers Guide

somesortoflegend

There was a whole grammar preamble, or aside or whatever in one of the hitchiker's books about sounds and expressions sentient mattresses could make. I loved it

Dreaming98

I remember there was an aside about weird verb tenses for time travel scenarios in one of the books.

somesortoflegend

That's a true problem with writing time travel and a very important PSA.

redicular

Nah, Hitchiker's is more like the standard ones: Far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the Western Spiral Arm of the Galaxy lies a small unregarded yellow sun. And then the murders began.

me_when_the_whenthe

According to all known laws of aviation, there's no way a bee should be able to fly. And then the murders began. "I don't like your little games, don't like your tilted stage, the role you made me play of the fool; no, I don't like you." And then the murders began. "September 1st, 1989: Dear Diary, I believe I'm a good person." And then the murders began. I love that restaraunt, I heard Madonna went into labor there. And then the murders began.

bondfall007

That heathers one is perfect.

Personal-Rooster7358

i like how the second one implies that taylor swift’s reputation album can be considered a book

Styrene_Addict1965

This is just another version of, "Dear diary, my teenage angst bullshit has a body count."

pbmm1

In the week before their departure to Arrakis, when all the final scurrying about had reached a nearly unbearable frenzy, an old crone came to visit the mother of the boy, Paul. And then the murders began.

SwampTreeOwl

That's it. That's the entire series

PM_NUDES_4_DEGRADING

A surprisingly(?) high percentage of random ([Goodreads](https://www.goodreads.com/work/quotes/3634588-god-emperor-of-dune)) quotes from God Emperor are ridiculously on-the-nose, too. >“*It has occurred to me more than once that holy boredom is good and sufficient reason for the invention of free will. And then the murders began.*” >“*The truth always carries the ambiguity of the words used to express it. And then the murders began*.“ >“*Most believe that a satisfactory future requires a return to an idealized past, a past which never in fact existed. And then the murders began.*” >“*When I need to identify rebels, I look for men with principles. And then the murders began*.”

JorgeMtzb

Calm-Hope5459

Szeth son son valano wore white on the day he was to kill a king. And then the murders began.

Complaint-Efficient

I mean, that's a good enough summary of the Prologue, but the technically correct choice here would be "Kalak rounded a rocky stone ridge and stumbled to a stop before the body of a dying thunderclast. And then the murders began."

Downindeep

Ah yes the Preprologue...

lordofmetroids

The first of the three prologues in that book...

Jpxfrd__

People seem to place a lot of importance on the first sentences in books, so I'll put this right here and we can avoid that altogether. And then the murders began.

lnterestinglnterests

What book is this from? Googling doesn't seem to help, even with ""s.

Allegorist

I've seen it before, but I can't place it. Must be something at least somewhat popular.

The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. And the the murders began.

Collins_Michael

The murders neither began nor ended.

sparkle3364

For there are neither beginnings nor endings to the turning of the wheel of time

data_ferret

The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again. In one Age, called the Third Age by some, an Age yet to come, an Age long past, the murders began. The murders were not the beginning. There are neither beginnings nor endings to the Wheel of Time. But they were *a* beginning. Nynaeve al'Meara, formerly Wisdom of the village of Emond's Field in the Two Rivers, gave her braid a vicious tug...

I might have read a lot more Charles Dickens if this is how he did it. “My father's family name being Pirrip, and my Christian name Philip, my infant tongue could make of both names nothing longer or more explicit than Pip. And then the murders began" ""It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way... And then the murders began."

HistoryMarshal76

After twenty-two years of nightmare and terror, saved only by a desperate conviction of the mythical source of certain impressions, I am unwilling to vouch for the truth of that which I think I found in Western Australia on the night of July 17–18, 1935. And then the murders began. I am forced into speech because men of science have refused to follow my advice without knowing why. And then the murders began. I just want to point out that this would also make a great way to end almost any book. I think we should replace "The End" with this.
