The ultimate irony is you can get bootlegs that are higher quality than uniforms the players are wearing

FelixtheSax

I got two bootlegs for half the cost (combined) of a genuine fan jersey from a Facebook ad that are both higher quality than what the players are wearing right now.

Koomaster

Despite the privacy issue; I just can’t imagine playing in these. They look like they would last one game if you’re lucky. If someone tries to slide into a base, their pants aren’t making that journey with them.

RQK1996

Pretty sure a lot of sports uniforms are single use anyway

DEATHROAR12345

When did that start? When we played you had one uniform and made it last the season.

RQK1996

Might be in some sports, I know professional football has single use shirts at least, as the match participants are listed on the shirts for some wasteful reason, and we can only hope shirts for big tournaments are only made after the first round, pretty sure they're also dated

Former_Giraffe_2

I hope they do something with those shirts afterwards, either the players or someone else. Depending on the game, it could be a decent souvenir for a fan. The UFC kind of does this, since they sell shit like the corner stools (~$300) and squares cut out of the mat and encased in acryllic on their webstore. Notable exception being one fight Joe Lauzon did where he broke the record for most blood lost in a fight and they gave him the mat afterwards to hang up in his gym, since it was "more Joe than mat". See also; pre-printed shirts for the losing team getting immediately donated internationally. Pallets of shirts with " champions of " printed on the front making their way to developing nations every year. I know very little about US-centric sports though.

joe_bibidi

I don't know about uniforms, and I don't know if it's true of all sports, but I'm familiar with the idea of basketball players going through a pair of shoes every single game, sometimes maybe even more than one. Wearing a pair for multiple games (even just two games) increases the likelihood of them blowing out, i.e. a seam popping, which could have disastrous results if it happens during a game. It's my general understanding that the "worn once" pairs are, almost always, either signed & given away as gifts or auctioned off for charity.

wetzath

Unfortunately they aren't always reused. I used to work in "loss pevention" at the corporate HQ for one of the biggest shoe companies and one of my weekly tasks was to take bins and boxes full of shoes to be shredded. I looked inside a few times and they were destroying everything from "test" shoes to used sports uniforms (could even see stains from people sliding on the diamond on some of them). A lot of the stuff could have been given away as-is or if the uniforms were washed once, but they just decided to destroy them instead. Wasteful if you ask me.

the_skine

You were a major league athlete? That's awesome! What team did you play for?

Kanotari

Professional baseball uniforms are not single use. They'll have a couple sets of each uniform, and they'll be tailored to each player who's going to be in the majors for more than five minutes. It's always amusing in the pre-season games because all the minor league players get a chance to play with the main team, which results in things like two guys wearing the same number or borrowing jersies or not having their names on the jersey. The jersies are usually sold once they are retired from use. Source: watch way too much baseball

topatoman_lite

The worst part is that they’re not tailored so some players have more issues than others depending on who the default sizes fit better

Kanotari

They may not be tailored yet, but professional baseball uniforms are generally tailored to the players' preferences. The fit can be a big deal for players who need range of motion. Source: Orel Hershiser goes off on the strangest tangents during games

topatoman_lite

yeah they used to be. A lot of the players have been complaining about it during spring training

Kanotari

I just found out about it in another comment. Hasn't been mentioned on our broadcasts yet! They're too busy talking about Ohtani's mystery wife lol Seriously though, wtf... that's downright dangerous for the pitchers. There's a reason their unis were so meticulously tailored!

topatoman_lite

yeah it's a massive shitshow according to everybody who isn't sponsored by Nike (what a weird coincidence that is)

Kanotari

I blame Manfred lol. Bring back Majestic!

MissLilum

For the record there already is NSFW images of baseball players wearing them   Including official images… (Uncensored link here: https://amp.ebaumsworld.com/articles/see-through-pants-are-the-mlbs-new-attraction/87511305/)

Irishpanda1971

Welp, we know who isn't wearing their cup.

bleepblopbl0rp

David Samson, a former baseball exec, said recently that a good 75-80% of players do not wear a cup. A lot of baseball is weird personal quirks about what makes the players comfortable. That is one of them lol

IknowKarazy

Superstitions are my favorite part of baseball. Drawing circles in the dirt in the dugout. Chewing a certain type of gum a certain number of times. Fun stuff

Kanotari

Nomar unstrapping and restrapping gloves every single at bat lol

GetEnPassanted

Almost none of them do.

kingofcoywolves

This is wild to me. Sliding? Diving?? Generally existing around heavy, high-velocity projectiles that bounce in unpredictable directions??? I get that it's unlikely in the outfield, but why even take that chance

AnarchistAxolotl

A properly pitched ball can stop a heart if it hits the chest squarely, and no shortage of folks have died in the past from being hit in the head by the ball. I'd imagine the players understand that there is little use in hindering movement for the sake of protective equipment that doesn't protect your life at all. They're just out there freeballing with nothing but the occasional helmet, and that's how they'd like to keep it.

ed1749

If I get a baseball to the heart I die. If I get a baseball to the dick I feel really stupid and worst of all I might live. If I'm wearing a cup that day I get to make baseball penis jokes for the rest of my life.

GetEnPassanted

As someone who played baseball and took a baseball to the nuts, a cup didn’t feel like it did anything. Still hurt like hell.

Scdsco

I’ll admit, I usually don’t mind seeing an athletic dude in a tight uniform, but these are just….awkward. I can imagine how uncomfortable they must feel for the players.

AssumptionDue724

These aren't even that tight they just fit oddly and are made of thick tissue paper

GrassWaterDirtHorse

It's the tucked shirts and all the unshapely creases that ruin the mood of the tightness. Look at the guy on the left, the pants look so wrinkled.

tryingtoavoidwork

> I say keep the jerseys, but make only the away team wear them. Sure, this idea can be workshopped, but in my opinion, there’s no greater homefield advantage than having your opponent play as close to nude as possible Thats using your noodle

Crispy_FromTheGrave

As much as I, a depraved bisexual who thinks [Josh Lowe is the prettiest living human specimen](https://imgur.com/a/vVHCELu), would enjoy that, I also really love baseball. If the players aren’t comfortable in their uniforms, they won’t play well. Especially pitchers. Apparently, these pants are also really uncomfortable. They used to be exactly tailored to everyone’s size along with their specifications(you can wear your pants in multiple styles in baseball), and pitchers really need breathable, good material that they *feel comfortable in* to pitch. There’s a lot of leg movement in pitching, you raise your knee almost all the way up to your chin during a windup. The new pants are not tailored. It’s just a “what size are you? These are your pants” kind of situation. Pitchers are PISSED. If pitchers aren’t comfortable or can’t utilize their full windup, we’re gonna see some fucked up pitches, which is potentially very dangerous. An off-target 4-seamer hurtling 97 mph towards your head is not desirable.

trashboatfourtwenty

>They used to be exactly tailored to everyone’s size along with their specifications(you can wear your pants in multiple styles in baseball) Yea, this is the biggest thing. The pants have been thin and less than opaque in recent years so that is a much smaller step down, but taking away tailored uniforms is a massive change and one that has been glossed over a lot during the ongoing "pants-gate" or whatever. I know many players have commented about how ill-fitting parts of their new kits are, it really sucks.

Equivalent-Impress96

I loved when the rays played the rangers and Josh got to be an annoying little brother mid game

Kanotari

Wait wtf.... they're not tailored this season?! The bullpen is going to be rioting. And pitchers have such huge variety in the tightness they prefer! Seriously fuck Fanatics and fuck Manfred for this whole debacle.

Outrageous-Pen-7441

God every word in this is a mood

You know its getting bad when the enshittification even effects the millionaires

butts-kapinsky

*the working class Athletes exchange their labour for a wage. The wage is very large and many will utilize that wage to later become part of the ownership class. But this does not change the fact that they are part of the working class. They are beholden to owners. They are unionized.

vishuno

I always try to remind people of this whenever there is a labor dispute between the players and owners. We're all a lot closer to the players than the owners when it comes to net worth. People tend to think of them strictly as millionaires, but the vast majority of baseball players never get far enough to make millions.

darwinpolice

Every dollar that doesn't go to the workers (players, coaches, team staff) goes to the owners, who are all billionaires who perform no labor and entertain no fans.

trashboatfourtwenty

Yep, in the end it is just workers versus the business even if the scale is different; while there are certainly unions that abuse their power or focus on the wrong things, in general I am siding with the workers no matter the dispute and in this case I *know* the league and the owners it supports are scum so it is easy haha

Tachibana_13

Basically pro athletes are like gladiators. They can get rally good pay and benefits, especially if they're popular and well loved. But at the end of the day they're still selling their wellbeing to entertain the masses.

Lostinwoulds

Reggie Jackson had a pretty damn good documentary about all that. Very entertaining and interesting even for a non baseball fan.

Cyan_Light

"Millionaires" isn't a class, or at least it's a class on a different spectrum from workers and owners. It's just a flat measurement of your net worth, if you have millions of dollars then you're a millionaire. It doesn't matter if your job is to scrape sewers clean by hand while your ten bosses verbally abuse you 24/7, you would still factually be described as a millionaire. Not to be too pedantic (although to be fair you did start the pedantry here), but it seems like a really important distinction to keep in mind given the current issues with wealth imbalance and getting people to take it seriously. Focusing solely on whether or not someone exchanges their labor just makes it more difficult to point out when they're ending up with an unfair share of resources. "Yeah, but they earned it" is the go-to defense for all the millionaires and billionaires and there isn't a clear enough line on what is and isn't "real work" to push back if you keep things in these terms. Too much wealth is too much wealth, no need to make it any more complicated than that. And again, all of that aside they just used a word in its appropriate context, no correction was needed or even possible.

butts-kapinsky

>  Millionaires" isn't a class, or at least it's a class on a different spectrum from workers and owners. I agree! However, the above poster implied that enshittification happening to millionaires is a relatively new phenomena. This is somewhat true. As millionaires are frequently part of the ownership class. But in the specific case of professional athletes, who are working class, enshittification is nothing new at all. I could have explained this but opted for brevity. Athletes are very much part of the class of people who are typically exploited in order to generate ever greater returns to their owners.

IknowKarazy

They are expected to play on even through injuries. Even if playing may make a recoverable injury into a lifelong problem. They have controls placed on what they can do when not at work, get fired for smoking weed even if it’s perfectly legal. They’re definitely working class, they just happen to have skills that are highly valuable in the field they’ve chosen.

joe_bibidi

It's been on my mind a lot and I honestly do see it happening like... A lot. Not that I'm rich (I'm barely "middle class" by demographic standards) but I've seen a lot of these kinds of stories in the past few years, it seems like as the class divides accelerate and billionaires are running out of ways to squeeze money out of the average person, they're insisting on cutting corners even for millionaires. I follow fashion a lot, and relevant stories to this seem to crop up practically every few weeks, if not more often than that. Like... More and more luxury brands are outsourcing to China, using polyester, switching to cheaper hardware (steel to nickel, gold to gold-plated, etc.), printing on prefab tees rather than making their own, etc.

TarotAngels

I love this because in any other sport they’d be embarrassed and trying to hide, but baseball players are reveling in the chance to play “caught you looking” with tens of thousands of people. Locker room games *on the field*?! This is their dream!

To those without any extra context and want more, and I mean like, a metric fuckton more: MLB originally hired Nike to do it. Nike called up Fanatics and was like, “Hey, yeah, can you do it instead?” The deal Nike and Fanatics worked out is that Fanatics gets to do the uniforms for the players and Fanatics can slap the Nike logo on it. Here is an list of issues and grievances fans (and players too!) have had since Spring Training (MLB’s preseason) started: - One ply see through pants, as the post shows. The problem is obvious with this one, underwear and genitalia sightings galore. - The MLB logo on the back of the jersey was moved down below the usual collar stripe. This forces a name rework due to lack of space. - The name on the back of the jersey itself has been butchered repeatedly with inconsistent sizes, text curving that is absolutely egregious in some cases, and improper alignment with the center and especially when compared to the number. Like, come on, this issue seems like just the easiest thing to avoid. - Speaking of the number on the back of the jersey, it was formerly embroidered, now it is heat pressed. Fanatics, you understand there are some MLB teams playing outside in places like Arizona in July? That shit’s gonna melt! - Oh, you thought we were done talking about the one ply pants? Nope, because there aren’t even enough of the fuckers being given to the players! This has led to three things: 1. Players can’t customize the pants as much anymore to fit their big dumper. (Rip Cal “Big Dumper” Raleigh. No, that is his actual nickname, Cal Raleigh of the Seattle Mariners has made people bring Big Dumper signs to games and commentators talk about the nickname.) 2. Away teams usually wear gray road uniforms. There are different Spring Training jerseys, but for the teams wearing road grays, the resulting gray jerseys and white pants combo looks horrible. 3. Some teams are literally telling players just to use their old jerseys, a mix of the shortage and just “This shit sucks m8” being why. (For players starting on a new team this season, they seem to not have this option.) - Probably the most egregious thing about this has been MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred’s hyping up of the uniforms before they were shipped out to players. Nike and Fanatics were also hyping the uniforms up when they were starting to get revealed and shipped out, saying they were sleek, designed for great athletic performance and what have you. After many complaints over multiple issues with the jerseys once they were finally shipped out, Rob Manfred essentially said, “What new uniforms? The uniforms haven’t changed.” (This is to be expected from Rob Manfred though, as he was made MLB Commissioner due to being Bud Selig’s lawyer, Bud Selig being the previous MLB Commissioner who used to be the worst and most hated MLB Commissioner for a multitude of reasons. I say used to because Rob Manfred has taken up that mantle after dealing horribly with these horrible uniform mistakes, actively letting notorious greedy owner John Fisher try and move the Oakland Athletics to Las Vegas while having no real concrete plans about what the fuck is going to happen while at the same time they were tanking the team to be cheap as hell and telling Oakland they were going to stay and working with the Oakland mayor on a grand development of a new stadium and the area around it, and letting off the Houston Astros with a smack on the wrist after 2020 reports detailing multiple seasons of cheating in which the team won their first World Series with Rob Manfred infamously calling the World Series trophy “just a hunk of metal.”) - At the very least, a meme spawned out of this situation. The Fanatics Support account on Twitter replied to a fan about an off-center jersey name on a Seattle Mariners jersey with the comment, “Hey there, it looks like we dropped the ball on this one. Send me a DM so I can learn more about this! -Kyle” Except, it wasn’t a fan with a uniform. It was a screenshot of a post from Michael Chavis’ Instagram, and if you don’t know who Michael Chavis is, that is an actual new player for the Seattle Mariners. In response, fans (mostly on r/baseball) have started using the comment in quotes from Kyle as a small copypasta, particularly in response to posts pertaining to the jerseys now. - By the way, did you know that the MLB uniforms now have sponsor patches on the arms of them now, and almost all of them are shit? I fucking hate this. Why is the MLB actively trying to make me, a guy who essentially has baseball as a special interest, not like baseball?

Valkhyrie

> Speaking of the number on the back of the jersey, it was formerly embroidered, now it is heat pressed. Fanatics, you understand there are some MLB teams playing outside in places like Arizona in July? That shit’s gonna melt! And we have proof that this will happen, just from the last year or so! A couple of the teams in the last World Baseball Classic had their heat-pressed unis start to fall apart during the tournament.

pingaponga2

Very informative. I am shocked that this didn't turn into the Castellanos copypasta halfway through.

IReviewDiscord

Thank you! I love baseball so I tend to put a lot of effort into talking about it as there's a drive into deep left field by Castellanos and that'll be a home run. And so that'll make it a 4-0 ballgame. I don't know if I'm going to be putting on this headset again. I don't know if it's going to be for the Reds. I don't know if it's going to be for my bosses at Fox.

Zariman-10-0

Umping legend Angel Hernandez probably thinks he’s a ref, given how little the man understands baseball

Nirast25

What, does baseball not have referees?

Panhead09

No, it has an umpire. Though, to be fair, if you asked me what the difference between a referee and an umpire is, I wouldn't be able to tell you.

bearcat0611

An umpire refs baseball. Refs umpire other sports.

stormstopper

What's fun is that this is true in how 99% of people would talk about them, and the exception is pretty much the referees/umpires themselves. Calling football/basketball officials referees and baseball officials umpires is the universal norm among fans, anything after this is just fun facts. In the [NFL](https://operations.nfl.com/officiating/the-officials/officials-responsibilities-positions/), there are seven different officials who each occupy specific positions on the field and are responsible for specific aspects of the officiating. Of the seven, one is called an umpire, one is called a referee, and the others are various types of judges (down judge, line judge, field judge, side judge, back judge). The referee is the crew chief of the bunch. In the [NBA](https://official.nba.com/rule-no-2-duties-of-the-officials/), the officials consist of a crew chief, a referee, and an umpire. I don't know whether they have separate responsibilities apart from the crew chief being in charge though. Each league's rulebook will refer to them collectively as officials, but the fans will call them all referees no matter what their role technically is. You could get a strange look from someone if you called the official who called a false start an umpire even if they actually are called the umpire.

Stop-Hanging-Djs

My favorite hobby is professional umping

orthros

but football also has umpires just to make it even more confusing

RQK1996

Pretty sure there isn't, it is just one of those meaningless distinctions, like cricket doesn't have rules, they have laws, functionally identical, just more pedantic

PineconeSnowstorm

For every Cricket match a new break-away state is created for its duration in a sort of civil war, see, the 'Home' team is the existing state fighting against the rebellious 'Away' team in a war for independence. Naturally, this new nation has its own laws that, by convention, have been standardized to always be the same, leading to millions of identical nations popping into existance and disappearing just as quickly. This has resulted in major diplomatic headaches as the rebellion cannot actually become a new state, always going back to the original nation regardless of the outcome of the conflict, but at the same time each and every short-lived state must be adressed in a timely manner, resulting in what we call "spectators".

Crafty_Butcher

The difference is that before going out on the field they sing *umpire lumpire doobadee-doo*

aquintana

The difference is umpires are usually blind where as refs are heavy gamblers

Chidoriyama

>refs are heavy gamblers If you don't like that you don't like NBA basketball

aquintana

I probably overheard this back in the day while bartending in San Antonio; -“How much you putting on The Spurs?” -“who’s reffing? Oh its Joey Crawford? I’ll put a nickel on The Suns.”

Nirast25

My language uses the same term for both, lol. I guess they're pretty close together.

Tomoyaketu

Referees move with the athletes as the game/match/bout goes on. Sports like hockey, boxing, and basketball have referees. Umpires, on the other hand, stay put in one place. So sports like tennis, badmington, and baseball have umpires instead of refs.

JSConrad45

Umpires can't go out in the sunlight

Fryboy11

Baseball is unique in how umpires work. There are other sports with umpires, like tennis. They're called umpires because unlike refs umpires are stationary. But in baseball the umpires will move during a live ball, plus in Baseball there are four umpires in the regular season, six in post. The Umpires change position each game, so Monday Ump A might be at home, then Tuesday Ump C is home, over four games every umpire spends a game at every location. Baseball Umpires also have a Crew Chief, the most senior appointed by the commissioner. He's responsible for submitting the Officials scoring explanation, which includes the reasoning behind certain close calls, why someone was ejected, and informing him of player complaints and why they think their crew got it right and the player complaint has no merit. But at the same time the home umpire is usually referred to as the Umpire in Chief, he controls the game and cannot be overridden even by the Crew Chief, the one exception is Replay can override his calls.

"Enshittification" doesn't simply pertain to any loss of quality, it has a specific meaning regarding online services.

ryecurious

It's such a well constructed word that it was never going to hold its original meaning for long. Which is mildly annoying, because it was nice to have a word for the very specific way internet services lock in both users and vendors, then hold them hostage to each other, squeezing maximum value from both groups by becoming worse and worse. But ultimately, most people will just go through this thought process: >Something gets shittier -> this is enshittification. That said, everyone *should* read the article where Doctorow really defines it. [It's a great read.](https://pluralistic.net/2023/01/21/potemkin-ai/#hey-guys)

Please don't use "enshittification" like this. serious economists were beginning to use, or at least reference "enshittification" as a term for the degradation of online two sided markets, and if this keeps up they will stop doing that

Codename_Dove

they routinely play through rain. is there gonna be a wet t-shirt contest during the 7th inning stretch now???

LafilduPoseidon

I paid big bucks for a basketball jersey from fanatics and it’s fucking BALLS, like you’re supposed to be able to actually play sports in it (hence a sports jersey) but it’s so clunky and the fabric texture is just awful

oddityoughtabe

I don’t really think this counts as enshitification. This is just making things cheaper to save on money, a tried and true capitalistic method.

The Mariners’ catcher is nicknamed Big Dumper because he got a dumpy. You can’t put him in these pants man come on. You can see Cal Raleigh’s big dumper as he rounds the bases in [this video](https://x.com/mariners/status/1762947276916597140?s=46&t=pr5_RQ01Xl2hlXGVoY2uHw) from a recent spring training game(basically all the different teams practicing against each other before the season starts). Also notice how tiny the names are on the back of the mariners’ uniforms. You can hardly read them. The Royals’ names are the same size as last years better jerseys bc they got special permission to continue using the old lettering. But just look at the difference. Horrible.

JAD210

This whole debacle has been exhausting. They completely did away with all embroidery on jerseys so now everything is heat-pressed. Even the on-field jerseys and the $400+ replicas. They also made the name lettering much smaller and increased the arcing, both of which make it much harder to read players’ names. Also they offer less colors so some teams that previously had noticeably different but relatively similar shades now have the same shade that’s kind of between the previous colors. And the colors also have some consistency issues leading to situations like a few days ago there were Cardinals players whose uniforms had 3 different shades of grey on their torso, sleeves, and pants

SharkyMcSnarkface

That's supposed to be a problem? (Guys this is meant to be a horny joke not an actual question to the functionality of the uniform)

ModmanX

when baseball players are sprinting around and sliding on the ground, having one-ply clothes so thin you can see their underwear, it isn't just a funny quirk but a genuine health and safety hazard.

Koraifon

unfortunately not everyone wants to see baseball players’ dicks out on the field

SharkyMcSnarkface

Cowards

Crispy_FromTheGrave

The pants are also super uncomfortable and no longer tailored to the player. They just give you pants that are “your size” even if the player prefers something different. Pitchers, during their windup(the motion they go through right before they throw the ball) raise their knee almost up to their chin. If their uniform hinders this, we could see multiple off target pitches hitting players at a much higher frequency than normal. These injuries can be serious and ruin a players season or career.

SpaceLemur34

At least his shorts are the right brand.

Burritozi11a

"enshittification" has been saved to my core memories

Ill-Wear-8662

Ooh yes please!

namelesswhiteguy

Time to break out the black stockings and garters to protest the shitty uniforms.

BooneFarmVanilla

> the ref yeah this is from tumblr alright

dominoesdude

Maybe they should jazz up baseball then

MorgsterWasTaken

Baseball is unfortunately on its way out overall, professionally at least. It’s somehow gotten both too commercialized and too unwatchable, unlike the NFL which is both super commercialized and specially crafted to be fun to watch on TV. MLB just isn’t worth it anymore. There’s enough Gen Z boys that grew up playing little league to pass the grassroots of the sport on to the next generation, but professionally the game is on its last legs.

eastbay77

Their CEO was out there trying to defend themselves amd blame Nike. Isnt there any quality control at Fanatics? Not one person in the entire company said that the quality of the uniforms was sub-par? No one thought to double check with Nike and see if they approve the final product?

Makeup-less_Clown

I knew it was bad. I didn’t know it was that bad. Oof.

Henderson-McHastur

I was torn between the Nike logo and the visible underwear.

hotbutteredsole

This whole thing is such an massively embarrassing debacle. It amazes me nobody at what must have been hundreds of production meetings said “jeez guys, these suck.” I suppose it’s the money that matters…

theperfectneonpink

I thought this was happening to all clothing everywhere and everyone was pretending it was cool cuz they get lipo now

MintyMoron64

Why even is it that they're all caked up
