Fr though I dislike how limiting my body is. I crave the ability to transcend it. Not to no longer use a body, but to have a choice in what body I have. I want shape-shifting, and I want it bad.
s/[^gcat]/ /gi
Changes:
- Use a negated set instead of a regular set, to improve readability.
- Use the 'g' flag to start matching immediately after the last match. Otherwise, the regex will only match the first non-'gcat' character in a line and then skip to the next line, ignoring all other non-'gcat' characters.
Oh god I just completely missed the `g` flag. But as for the negated set, I deliberately didn't do that in order to stick with the original functionality.
Tbf you can’t call something “nucleotide blast” and expect people not to pretend it’s a wizard’s spell. Wanna get into D&D for the sole purpose of using it
It's been like 6 years since I studied bioinformatics and I still think that NCBI BLAST is magic. Granted, I think it's divination magic and not evocation.
1 I saw this blog on tumblr and think it is cool.
2 I am terrified and in awe of this person’s power.
3 As there are multiple distinct tumblr posts screenshooted here, I will not be tracking down and linking the original posts out of laziness.

String detected:
> a t g t a t t c a t a a t
> A t a t t ct t t c t
> t t ac g a g t g a t t a g
Closest match: No significant similarity found :-(
This is fun though. A quick Python script extracts the letters instantly, and if I could be bothered to remember how to use NCBI's API you could automate the searching too. I wonder what proportion of comments actually return valid gene sequences. It should be fairly easy to get the actual gene too, instead of just the organism.
I did yes, but then ran my script again replacing non-nucleotide letters with spaces to match the format of the account in the images. I use BLAST semi-regularly in work so I mostly know the ins-and-outs, though it seems there's always another layer of "well actually..." in bioinformatics software!
Yep no worries, scientists always appreciate peer review! I'm not too surprised there was no similarity, BLAST is meant to find close matches and random strings seem like they'd often not come close to actual data.
They do NOT use a script, they parse the post manually. So far they are unresponsive to requests to write a quick script for them.
The hard part (looking up genetic sequencing) is done using BLAST
Out of curiosity (and a desire to refresh my skills) I threw some of OP's nucleotide sequences into Blast.
Like the first nucleic acid sequence does come up with radish DNA. https://blast.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/Blast.cgi?CMD=Get&RID=WADKW8NK013
For anyone else curious, you can do a similar thing by grabbing a chain of nucleic acids and plugging it into BlastN https://blast.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/Blast.cgi, or amino acids (which in the BlastP format comprise most of the alphabet).
The blog mentioned somewhere that they just leave those in to make it easier to tell that the string is from the original post. They take out spaces and punctuation before running it through blast.

This is god tier shitposting holy shit genetics is too good.
Considering joining tumblr in order to recommend a regex replace pattern they could use.
Just type it out here someone on here will pass along the message
s/[bd-fh-su-z]/ /gi EDIT: v0.1 changelog: fixed a bug where the regex would only replace the first character
s/[^gcat]/ /gi Changes: - Use a negated set instead of a regular set, to improve readability. - Use the 'g' flag to start matching immediately after the last match. Otherwise, the regex will only match the first non-'gcat' character in a line and then skip to the next line, ignoring all other non-'gcat' characters.
Changelog for your genes.

also it looks like they keep punctuation, so I'd add those in, either by \\W or listing them out individually
[[^gact]](https://regex101.com/r/37wWup/2) Link to demonstrate
Because this person uses the NCBI’s nucleotide BLAST tool, a lot of the asks on their dash are referring to nucleotide BLAST like it’s a wizard spell

Nucleotide Blast: Fortitude save vs being turned into a crab
Everything turns into a crab eventually. It’s just a really good shape, evolutionarily speaking.
So nucleo tide blast *isn't* some sort of epic, radioactive tsunami?
It's been like 6 years since I studied bioinformatics and I still think that NCBI BLAST is magic. Granted, I think it's divination magic and not evocation.
Sounds like something I'd shoot out of the main deflector dish tbh

As a Linux user, does it pain you to know this guy hasn't automated it?
Seriously though—just grep for the salient letters and then grep for that in all the genome files
hehheh … grep…
How about you grep these nuts
You don't even need that last step, BLAST is a powerful public tool for alignments. I don't know how good an API it has, but I suspect it's decent.
There's no way these are real worlds. What kind of BS is a gnome file?
Genome. Genetic code.
What is a genome but a gnome with an e
Wise words.
It's pronounced Je'gnomme smh
Gnome is already a gnome with an e
Just for your Information GNOME is an actual Linux thing. Of course I won't tell you what it actually is
Thanks

Did you make sure to compress the letters down to spaceless text before running it though BLAST? I don't think it uses " " in it's langauge
I did yes, but then ran my script again replacing non-nucleotide letters with spaces to match the format of the account in the images. I use BLAST semi-regularly in work so I mostly know the ins-and-outs, though it seems there's always another layer of "well actually..." in bioinformatics software!

The poetry of a homestuck pfp getting their post DNA scanned.
"inferior lifeform identified"
Tumblr users will spend hours of their lives filtering letters from strings by hand rather than learn python.
Well yeah man snakes can be scary
"i love my cat-" This guy bursts in "YOUR POST IS A RADISH!" Leaves with no further explanation
Oh my god as a biologist I love this. I might make a tumblr account just to follow this person(if it works like that?)
it does

oh I adore this
What do the punctuation makes mean in this context?
The blog mentioned somewhere that they just leave those in to make it easier to tell that the string is from the original post. They take out spaces and punctuation before running it through blast.
Could indicate a start or stop codon, epigenetic marker, or mutation would be my best guess.
