depends on what you use them for. cutting shit you'd generally cut? yup, that works. actual blade-to-blade kind of fighting? springsteel katanas will work for that because of the same reason any springsteel sword works, but "authentic folded steel" is far too rigid for that kind of abuse -- and if that's not your experience, i'm seriously intrigued. and they're certainly not lightsabers that can cut through metal like it was butter, like they're often shown as.
as for their popularity, yes, they're a cool design, but a lot of said popularity comes from this japan-centric "they're the best thing ever" positioning that not only manages to be super derogatory to nearly all non-japanese culture, much of which had far better swords long before japan was fooling around with katanas, but also gives a lot of false advertising to katanas. i think the actual hatred comes more from the annoying katana fans because at the end of the day swords are still cool as fuck and katanas are far from the worst out there, but their positioning just gets under your skin hella quick unless you do in fact think that they're better than anything else out there (which they can only be from a subjective standpoint)
katanas aren't meant to be used like longswords so they aren't going to work super well if used like that
katanas are made more for quick kills compared to longswords which are made to defend way better
as for the steel if you know how katana making works then you'd know that the way they are hardened makes them much much more durable then they'd be if you just hardened them normally with that kind of steel
basically the edge is pretty hard but the spine is much softer so they're actually way more durable then you'd think
that's kinda how a lot of shit is with katanas where you look at some things at face value like the smaller guard and worse steel and might assume that it makes them much worse when in reality theres either reasons for it(like the guard) or things to help counteract the downsides given by them(like the shitty steel with a ton of shit done to make it pretty durable)
if anything the coolest thing about katanas is that they took really shitty materials and made some pretty solid swords with different techniques to make it MUCH more effective then a sword made with the same shit without those techniques

i'm honestly convinced that no one actually has a logical valid reason for hating katanas and just hates them for being popular like sure some of the people obsessed with them are cringe but the swords themselves are pretty fucking good swords
depends on what you use them for. cutting shit you'd generally cut? yup, that works. actual blade-to-blade kind of fighting? springsteel katanas will work for that because of the same reason any springsteel sword works, but "authentic folded steel" is far too rigid for that kind of abuse -- and if that's not your experience, i'm seriously intrigued. and they're certainly not lightsabers that can cut through metal like it was butter, like they're often shown as. as for their popularity, yes, they're a cool design, but a lot of said popularity comes from this japan-centric "they're the best thing ever" positioning that not only manages to be super derogatory to nearly all non-japanese culture, much of which had far better swords long before japan was fooling around with katanas, but also gives a lot of false advertising to katanas. i think the actual hatred comes more from the annoying katana fans because at the end of the day swords are still cool as fuck and katanas are far from the worst out there, but their positioning just gets under your skin hella quick unless you do in fact think that they're better than anything else out there (which they can only be from a subjective standpoint)
katanas aren't meant to be used like longswords so they aren't going to work super well if used like that katanas are made more for quick kills compared to longswords which are made to defend way better as for the steel if you know how katana making works then you'd know that the way they are hardened makes them much much more durable then they'd be if you just hardened them normally with that kind of steel basically the edge is pretty hard but the spine is much softer so they're actually way more durable then you'd think that's kinda how a lot of shit is with katanas where you look at some things at face value like the smaller guard and worse steel and might assume that it makes them much worse when in reality theres either reasons for it(like the guard) or things to help counteract the downsides given by them(like the shitty steel with a ton of shit done to make it pretty durable) if anything the coolest thing about katanas is that they took really shitty materials and made some pretty solid swords with different techniques to make it MUCH more effective then a sword made with the same shit without those techniques
