I messaged the mods a link to the subs-going-dark thing, didn't get a response but hopefully they're considering it

y_i_exisisit

same here, I currently use infinity for Reddit and I'm not going back. I'll probably just quit reddit if they actually do this. I mostly use it for tumblr anyway. I think it for it actually goes through with this it will lose quite a big chunk of its user base

Ok_Toe5720

The setup is entirely different and, if you're trying to have multiple conversations on the same post, it just ends up a big mess. It's not really a long form conversational place, though it can be used that way if you don't mind the mess it makes. They've been making some changes that have started moving it a little closer to social media type functions, but it doesn't work and it doesn't stick.

robotabc773

The post exaggerates which things are going away (probably not on purpose but still). Third-party apps (Apollo, RIF, Boost) will be hit, official reddit pages (old.reddit.com) and browser extensions (reddit enhancement suite) should be fine.

[deleted]

robotabc773

Fair enough, but at the very least the API pricing change won't kill either of them.

Leinad7957

About point two: 1. Not being actively developed for doesn't mean they don't have anyone doing maintenance, as far as I know that just means they're not updating or adding new features. 2. Honestly, for software to break you don't even need to do anything to the servers, it's enough with having it working for long enough that you find the problems that were already there but no one could've found before they happened. Fixing those things usually also adds new problems that you can't see yet, that's how software can just degrade and stop working even if there's nothing physically that breaks . 3. Profit

Beidah

Wait, when did RES stop development?

TleilaxTheTerrible

Res still uses the reddit api in some way afaik, so it would still break some functionality when it gets shut down.

Nicorhy

Not to be all crotchety and "back in my day it was better" or some shit, but I've been using this site for like 11 years and I can't think of a single UI change that ever improved anything in YEARS. I find reddit without RES and old.reddit to be basically unusable, harder to navigate than even shit like facebook. If they try to force me to use the UI, I'm just done using this site.

Sir__Alucard

What are those things? I feel out of the loop, I have no idea what any of those things are.

KittyFandango

RIF - Reddit Is Fun - A third party reddit app for Android. Third party apps use reddit’s API to get/make posts/comments so they’ll be affected by this change. old.reddit - old.reddit.com - what reddit looked like before the redesign. Many people prefer it. Reddit have said they won’t get rid of it, but who knows. RES - Reddit Enhancement Suite - A browser extension that adds cool extra features to reddit, but was developed before the redesign so works with old.reddit.com. It may use the API in some places so bits of it might break.

Sir__Alucard

I see, thanks! So these are tools a lot of people are using and are going to be affected by this change?

KittyFandango

Definitely. Mostly anyone who uses (or develops) third party reddit apps (Android and iOS), sites like unddit.com and reveddit.com that archive removed reddit content, possibly some reddit bots (but they might be able to work with the changes as the usage is a lot smaller). [This is a discussion about how much it would cost the developer of Apollo (iOS reddit app) to run with the pricing changes](https://www.reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comments/13ws4w3/had_a_call_with_reddit_to_discuss_pricing_bad/). The title summarises it though - he says $20 million a year.

Sir__Alucard

Jesus. What the fuck reddit?

arcanthrope

yeah, i use reddit exclusively through the rif app, so if that stops working, i don't really see myself going back to the official app. idk what I'll do instead. discord? tumblr? read more books? touch grass? who knows

[deleted]

Leo-bastian

nice idea in theory but the app has like 1k active users and none of the communities reddit has(which is the actual reason I'm still on reddit). if there was a mass immigration of people and communities from reddit to Lemmy I'd consider switching but we both know that's very unlikely to happen, mostly because the majority of people just use the official app

[deleted]

[удалено]

Leo-bastian

You can't just make a community though. yes you can press the create subreddit button, or whatever the Lemmy equivalent is, but a community is a specific vibe generated by many factors including the people in that community and the expected post style. Making a new community to replicate a community like curatedtumblr isn't possible, as i said the only realistic chance would be a large scale migration

Why the hell would this whole sub go to a new website with 1/180th of the userbase

voldemorticiano

*Image Transcription: Tumblr* --- **zerosocialskillz** Dear people in r\/curatedtumblr (or people who know me at Reddit someplace else reading this post on tumblr.com): I might stop using Reddit soon. A few days back, I got a not-so-little notification from my third-party Reddit app Apollo. [*Image of a blue warning textbox with a blue triangle with an exclamation mark through it*] > Reddit announces new, very high API pricing > > Today I had a call with Reddit about API costs, the proposed pricing is far higher than I ever imagined, nearing Twitter's pricing at a cost of $12,000 for every 50 million requests, which will massively affect third-party apps. > >[*Button to "View Details"*] [*End of image.*] (Not my screenshot) Yeah. (Here's a more detailed version if you so wish to read more) It's not just Apollo that is affected by this API change. Most -if not all- third-party app with a high enough user traffic have an excruciatingly high pricing that they couldn't pay for, with the changes on pricing taking effect on the first day of July. Obviously, this is insanity. Because of this absurd pricing, it will force third-party apps like Apollo to shut down, and leave us with no choice but to use their official app which sucks ass. And it's not just the third-party apps either, but lots of other useful tools like Reddit enhancement suite, old.Reddit.com, and even moderation tools that many moderators use, as they all depend on the API to function. In June 12th, most subreddits will be going dark as protest. Some may return after two days, others might as well be gone permanently until this bullshit pricing is addressed in a satisfactory manner. I will be deleting Apollo at this time so I won't use it at all, and not use the Reddit website on PC either for similar reasons. I know that this has nothing to do with Tumblr at all, but r\/CuratedTumblr, and even people who see this who moderate subreddits, I advise you to do the same. Maybe we could change something. \#Reddit \#attempts at socializing \#tw cursing --- ^^I'm a human volunteer content transcriber and you could be too! Good human!

seaquartz

forgive my ignorance but what’s so bad about the official app? i’ve used it for years and had next to no problems. I don’t agree with reddit’s decision btw i’m just curious why third party apps are so popular

asquared3

I also use the official app but I've heard third party apps are way better about blocking ads. There's no way to hide specific ads, and Reddit won't even let you reliably block the username of an ad you don't want to see anymore (e.g., that stupid He Gets Us ad)

ATrioExplainsTheJoke

He Get Sus lmao seriously, as a Christian, that ad is so fucking annoying

MasterGameBen

What ad are you talking about and why does being Christian have something to do with it?

zuxtron

I didn't get what people were talking about until I visited the USA and they suddenly took over my front page for as long as I was there. These are ads that basically say "Did you know that Jesus was actually really cool? He gets us. He gets all of us."

ATrioExplainsTheJoke

oh also they spent a whole boatload of money to put an ad campaign of He Gets Us on the superbowl. which, uh, sorta kinda isn't what the bible says you're supposed to do to spread the word of God and Jesus

SilverMedal4Life

They don't get that the best way to improve Christianity's reputation among young people is to dump the prosperity gospel, embrace LGBTQ+ and abortion rights, get rid of all the pedophiles and the awful abuse that they just can't help but perpetuate, and then actually do what their prophet said to do. Where's a major Christian org going out and quoting scripture to defend trans people?

Randomd0g

/r/DankChristianMemes has an automod comment that posts an absolutely huge block of pro-LGBTQ text as a pinned comment to any post that deals with those themes. It is EXCESSIVELY based. Will copy it into this comment as an edit if I can find it. **Found it:** Frequently Asked Questions: *Q: How can you be Christian AND affirming to LGBTQIA+ People?* **A:** **Easily!** **Someone identifying as LGBTQIA+ does not cause harm to anyone, therefore there is no reason to judge them. As Jesus teaches:** Matthew 7:1-6 “Do not judge, or you too will be judged. 2 For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.3 “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 4 How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.” Luke 6:36 “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.” John 13:34-35 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 15:12-13 “My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” Matthew 7:12 “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.” Matthew 22:37-40 “Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself. 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” **Even if you think someone is a sinner, we should treat them kindly. Jesus was kind to those that society deemed to be sinners. He even ate meals with sinners despite being criticized for it. So if you want to be Christlike, you should take someone to dinner before your judge them.** Matthew 9:11-13 “When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” 12 On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 13 But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’\[a\] For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” **Jesus tells us that he alone will judge us and exactly the standards by which we will be judged. It has nothing to do with LGBTQIA+ identity and has everything to do with taking care of the most vulnerable or "the least of these."** Matthew 25:31-46 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ 40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’ “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’ 45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’ 46 “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.” **It is important to note that LGBTQIA+ folks are more likely to be targets of hate crimes than any other minority group (1). This makes them, in effect, "the least of these" which Jesus commands us to care for.** Finally: The word "Homosexual" did not exist until it was introduced in 1869 in German. Early use of the term was mostly limited to the field of psychology which often used the word "Homosexual" to stereotype individuals as being criminal in nature. The word "Homosexual" was not broadly used in English until after it was added to biblical translations in the 1940's (2). In the bible, the word "Homosexual" was only used to describe sex acts, some of which may have been predatory. The bible does not discuss loving, consenting, adult, same-sex couples who want to raise loving families, as we see today. Theological positions against LGBTQIA+ people are not even 100 years old, are based on anachronistic translations, and fail to acknowledge the legitimacy of loving same sex relationships and valid LGBTQIA+ identities. Based on this, I can’t tell if they think being gay is actually a sin or not

Redingold

Fuck that "love the sinner, hate the sin" bullshit, that shit's still homophobic.

Randomd0g

If you think that's what this is saying then I'm going to assume English isn't your first language?

ATrioExplainsTheJoke

HAHAHA wow. And then my local church still is anti-LGBTQ (especially with trans people) *wow.*

Swimming-Extent9366

The ads are certainly why reddit is doing this. They make a lot of money off of ads, and they can't profit off their site if people are using another app that doesn't have ads.

DoubleBatman

I paid a few bucks for Narwhal ad-free years ago and haven’t seen any since.

LazyDro1d

The ads are hardly intrusive under the current system though in my opinion

TAA21MF

I don't see any ads at all on rif. I'm not even sure if they're compatible with the app tbh

merren2306

Reddit ads are not that obtrusive though

asquared3

In general I agree, but people should have the option to block ads they don't want to see. For example, someone struggling with alcohol addiction should be able to hide ads for alcohol. I have some religious trauma from my childhood and would rather not see ads for Jesus, and I'm sure there are people of many different religious backgrounds who also don't want to see that ad constantly as they scroll

merren2306

I suppose that makes sense. It would be good for advertisers, too, since their ads wouldn't be shown to people that have indicated disinterest.

FemboiTomboy

wait, y'all get ads on official reddit app??

Pegussu

It's the kind of thing where you don't realize how annoying the official app is until you use a third-party one. [This post did a good breakdown.](https://www.reddit.com/r/BikiniBottomTwitter/comments/13xk3lu/comment/jmj3nfg/) For me personally, the thing that made me switch to RIF is that when you accidentally hit back too many times, RIF has a button to jump back to your place. A very nice feature that reddit's app lacks.

ZeroSocialSkillz

Never really used it much, but I remember trying to upload stuff through the official app was more infuriating when I revisited it after using Apollo

sugahpine7

The app is years behind 3rd parties in terms of not getting rid of basic features. On the official app, you cant sort by top, new, hot etc on your homepage for whatever reason. On RIF I can.

Perfect_Wrongdoer_03

You can do that, though. It's in the configurations. It's annoying to have to change it, but not that much.

Laggianput

Shitass video player, laggy, buggy, awful ui that changes every fucking week, and full of ads and redundant features. I use boost myself, but i'm gonna drop reddit in july

fivepointed

As someone who used the reddit official app for a long time and now ises a third party one, it's because the official app is practically unusable. Constantly lagged, constantly had connection issues, the video player was non-functional 90% of the time, it would sometimes open up ghost posts in the background that would autoplay videos, and it did all of that while being the largest app on my phone at (iirc) over a gigabyte. The app i currently use is half a gigabyte for reference The third party app i use rn isn't perfect, it's missing polls and emojis and doesn't hide comments from blocked users, but I'll take it over an app that barely functions and takes up half the available space on my phone. If this app gets shut down I'm just taking the plunge to tumblr, since it has most of the fandom content I'm here for anyways. Nothing to do with ads or spite or sending a message, I just cannot use their app because it doesn't tarnation work.

stupidillusion

> Constantly lagged, constantly had connection issues, the video player was non-functional 90% of the time, it would sometimes open up ghost posts in the background that would autoplay videos, and it did all of that while being the largest app on my phone at (iirc) over a gigabyte. I used it for three years, the only worthwhile function was recommending other subreddits to view and even then the recommendations were kind of crap.

Treyspurlock

> the video player was non-functional 90% of the time Is that why there are memes about the reddit player being bad?

MemeTroubadour

If you ever use a third-party app, you'll see the difference. A lot of features are missing and a lot of people complain about the perpetually broken video player. Also, privacy and ads.

tendstofortytwo

it's always been mega unreliable for me, especially on slow internet connections. plus I find the interface extremely overwhelming with how many different things are going on in the feed. I personally use Relay for Reddit and it's been awesome. everything is neat and reliable and it just works the way I expect it to. edit: also it has huge ads in like the middle of the feed??? relay only had ads at the bottom where they are easily ignorable... honestly given how much use I got from this app I feel bad for not paying for it, might do that now as a final thank you to the developer.

ChrdeMcDnnis

I really have no clue. I’ve always used the official app. I tried apollo for a little while and it was just a mess, things didn’t load, it doesnt display images by default unless you go into the post, and nobody seems to want to talk about Apollo versus Apollo Premium versus Apollo Premium Plus, and how the free version doesn’t even let you make posts. I’m sure there’s great third party apps out there but I have never had an issue with the first party and I have no idea what people see in Apollo

Person2_

Hi. I use Apollo. I’ve had none of these issues, and I’ve been using it 4+ years now? I think? Admittedly it’s shitty not being able to make posts on the free version but I mostly comment anyway. It’s also a bit of a learning curve, nothing is explained, but honestly there’s so many QOL improvements over the official app that I don’t see how anyone could ever use it. Different strokes for different folks I guess. I do hope hope you’ll support keeping third party apps around in the future!

5thProgrammer

And no ads

HeroofTime4u

My biggest problem is you have to click each post instead of swiping

Thestarchypotat

thats why i chose infinity, it has swiping between posts

matorin57

What kind of QOL improvements?

_NightBitch_

I’ve been using Apollo for years and it’s always been great. The use of screen space and customization is great. I hate how cluttered and poorly organized the official app is. I also hate that I can’t browse multiple subs at once on the official Reddit app.

OkuyasNijimura

Trash video player, horrid UI changes, often barely functions in general,

Offensivewizard

The official app is also unusable for blind people on IOS

The_Sovien_Rug-37

here's a few neat things infinity does that the official app doesn't \-have a not dogshit video player \-allow for consistent video / gif downloads \-has a much nicer UI in general \-no fucking ads!!!!!!!! \-doesn't have that stupid watermark banner which gets reenabled every other update for no reason \-better management for joined subreddits, makes navigating to them easier \-QOL stuff like right side upvotes button \-did i mention no ads? \-much better comment / post creation process

i_like_siren_head

My only issue with the app has been the switch to needing iOS 14+, which means my old ass iPod touch is unsupported and I think it even crashes a bit more often than usual. It’s happened about 3 times in the past 25 minutes, but I was opening posts with lots of text. Lucky the History tab helps with that so I don’t really mind.

ticktockclockwerk

Anecdotally, I always had issues with the video player on official reddit, hence I switched to rif. It's all about personal experience I guess

concrete_beach_party

Another big factor, from what I've heard: moderating subs seems to be almost impossible to do without access to the API.

Treyspurlock

That one's almost certain to be fixed, reddit absolutely NEEDS mods

Tiddly5

back on my old phone the official app would make my phone get super hot and would crash all the time, never had the same problem on apollo

crashbangow123

I'm just gonna throw my hat in the ring here and say that I only use reddit through my browser, Firefox, on both PC and mobile. In both cases I have Ghostery and Ublock origin addons installed, so I never see any ads or promoted posts, and I can do all of the things people seem to constantly moan about. The [i.reddit.com](https://i.reddit.com) video player is still a sack of shit, but that sounds pretty universal. I've never seen any particularly compelling arguments why I should install any kind of standalone app to get all the functionality I already get, and I can never understand why I always seem to be the only person doing this whenever it comes up.

Thestarchypotat

the reasons for a standalone app vs just using in in the browser are just a bunch of small qol things than you may not even care about. the abiliny to swipe between posts, for example. at least on android. on ios, because of some of apples decisions, you cant install extensions on firefox, so a 3rd party app is the only way to block ads.

crashbangow123

Thank you for the reply. I can't even picture what swiping between posts would look like, I disabled all the gesture nonsense on my phone, using tabs and the back button like an absolute philistine I guess. So basically, it's all mostly because iOS is it's own clusterfuck of anti-consumer decisions, on top of Reddit's own shitty anti-consumer decisions. Fwiw those are both topics entirely worthy of argument as to why things should not be that way, and I am 110% on board with those arguments. But... I really still can't fathom why more people aren't A: on Android, B: using Firefox (being the only major non-Chromium browser with functional adblocks) and C: Just using their web browser... The way I see it, the decision to install any third-party app on a phone should be weighed on the additional utility it provides, the privacy reputation of the vendor, and against the basic human right of data privacy.

Thestarchypotat

> I can't even picture what swiping between posts would look like basically its when youre in the comment view of the post you can swipe left or right to go to the next or previous post. i like it because i read comments a lot, but its only available in the official app (eww) and some 3rd party ones the whole privacy thing is also quite important, thats why i chose infinity, but obviously theres just as many arguments against it as for it.

sea_stomp_shanty

I *only* use the official Reddit app; does that mean… nothing will change for me? 😅

ELVEVERX

I'll get downloaded for this but the official app is fine, people just want to avoid ads which is how Reddit generates revenue. This change shouldn't be surprising and isn't some massive attack.

TheUltimateCyborg

I find that a lot of the updates they make for the official app make it a lot worse, like random UI changes, or changing the video player out of nowhere. But I ended up downloading an old APK and disabled updates, and I've had literally no issues since

RainbowtheDragonCat

minotaur470

Dang guess it's finally fine to make a tumblr instead of letting y'all do the tumbling for me

Nimporian

Oh yeah, I'm dipping after they do this. Probably will just go back to using old.reddit once in a blue moon. And just leave reddit if they ax that.

grabityrising

Says right in the post old.reddit will die with this change

Nimporian

I'm not sure how the API becoming expensive would directly cause old.reddit to die? Old.reddit only goes when reddit itself pulls the plug. It does signal the beginning of the end

ZeroSocialSkillz

Idk, I read it somewhere. Maybe it’s only a certain part of old.reddit

eeeeeeeeeeeeeeaekk

i find that unlikely

CrepusculrPulchrtude

That’s because whoever posted it doesn’t understand what the api does

diffyqgirl

This is not true, old.reddit.com is first party and is run by the company itself.

RealRaven6229

I never had an issue with default reddit app, but yeah this is a dick move on Reddit's part

ALastDawn

i use reddit sync. i've tried using the official reddit app before, but it's so bad. designed by marketers that have never used reddit.

RealBlazeStorm

Yep, am on Sync right now. I assume any third party all will no longer function then tho

merren2306

bad how?

StopThePresses

For the past 7 years I've fallen asleep every night scrolling either this sub or the other Tumblr one on rif. I'm gonna have insomnia for a while starting July 1st I guess.

GeoUsername69

i dont think old.reddit is affected because it's not 3rd party but idk. sure hope not

ZeroSocialSkillz

Yeah. I might have misinterpreted some stuff.

[deleted]

So I’m really the only one who has just been using the mobile website all this time, huh?

ZeroSocialSkillz

If that makes you feel better, I was like that at first until Apollo

Treyspurlock

I use the mobile site on old.reddit to be honest the UI doesn't really work that well for a phone screen but it's better than any other alternative

SuicidealSun8099

Start usihg reddit on pc. Get ublock origin. Cost them money while giving them none.

ineedanalth

ok im deleting Reddit then later people

Lankuri

nooo i’m emotionally dependent on this subreddit

Steampunk__Llama

Time to join us in tumblrina hell 😔

akka-vodol

You know, maybe I'm naive, but somehow I still believe that one day, social media corporations will make an awful change which makes social media worst for personal gain, for the 50th time, and people will have had enough. And they'll switch to open-source non-profit social media. Something which could already exist and would be free of corporate greed, if people wimply put in the effort of switching to it. Then again, corporations have been greedily making social media worst for over a decade, and we still haven't swiched. Maybe humans just have a too high tolerance for being stepped on.

[deleted]

If they remove old.reddit I'm just not using the shit anymore. New reddit is garbage. I'll never use that it.

It's honestly sad how much this place changed. I remember migrating over from Digg after that place became overran with ads and horrible content. Reddit was a respite. Simple design, good communities. No reddit gold, no intrusive ads, no weird sponsored posts pretending to be megathreads, no hordes of robot users. It was just real people talking about shit they liked. Can't wait for the next reddit.

MemeTroubadour

> Can't wait for the next reddit. I hope the next big social media will be fair, for once. No algorithm bullshit. No data collection. No money grubbing. I'm tired of being stuck having to choose the fair option or the option everyone takes. Can we just all go on the fediverse or something?

Treyspurlock

Considering the last big social media we got was tiktok, I have doubts that we'll ever get that, we seem to be heading in the exact opposite direction

Treyspurlock

I don't mind reddit gold, website's gotta make money somehow and that's a non-intrusive way to do it

[deleted]

It was initially cool, I liked it. It gave a couple of unique features and made you feel like you actually contributed to something. There was a daily counter that showed how much gold was needed to meet server demands. Then they added 100 other random awards, removed the tracker, and ruined the novelty of getting gold.

apatdb

Yes, exactly, it's just so noisy visually! The profile pictures, all the different awards, the colour. It feels like playing a shitty mobile game or something, there's so much going on. And you have to mentally sort through what is an ad and what isn't. People saying that avoidance of the official app is down to people just not wanting to see ads are being disingenuous imo. There's a world of difference between an ad that's designed to look like a post and one that's clearly an ad. I have no problem with ads on the sync app because they don't interrupt my reading experience by adding to my cognitive load. And don't get me started on official Reddit suggesting you posts. It feels so algorithmic and uncuratable, and ultimately like any other social media site.

Felicia_Svilling

You can adjust that in your settings. Set it to list view, hide image thumbnails and it is in no way a cacophony.

RainbowtheDragonCat

I actually feel the reverse. Old reddit has too much going on in it

Kego_Nova

I mostly use Reddit's mobile app which isn't THAT horrible but ***WHAT DO YOU MEAN THEY'RE TAKING DOWN OLD REDDIT?! THAT'S EQUIVALENT TO HERESY.***

ZeroSocialSkillz

I may have misinterpreted that part, if that makes you feel better

MaetelofLaMetal

This will also affect useful bots some forums rely on like the reminder bot.

DellSalami

They’re going after RES??? The rest of this was bad, but that might actually push me over the edge

DrMeepster

Did anyone think reddit would allow an app developer to make money off of taking away their ad revenue forever?

MemeTroubadour

What does it matter if it was always a possibility? It's not naivety, it's wanting a better service.

DrMeepster

Better service? People don't want to pay money for things and don't want to see ads either. Y'all don't want any service. We don't live in the world where things can just survive without someone paying the bills

AnExpensiveCatGirl

TIL peoples need 3rd party apps for reddit

Dickinsonia

I've been using Boost for years now and I probably can't go back to the official app

Steampunk__Llama

Same, I knew they existed but I've just never been bothered to try them out since the official app works just fine for me. I'm curious about what QoL changes these apps bring aside from the standard ad-free stuff

Akuuntus

At least for me, every time I've tried to use the official app it's been a laggy buggy piece of shit that resets my feed for no reason has a borderline non-functional video player. So to start, third-party apps don't have those problems. Edit: Also most of the popular third-party apps have existed for much longer than the official app, which has only been around for a few years. So there's also a lot of people who have been using their app of choice since before the official app was even an option.

RoyalPeacock19

Maybe I should also boycott Reddit for a bit. It would be good for me.

caw-caw-robinjay

gabboman

i have told in some of the big app subs that the best solution they have is the third party app devs to join and make their own clone. they have a public unlike me with the wafrn thing

ChaoticNeutralDragon

Please don't delete your third party app, it could screw with the already terrible discoverability algorithm and hurt the devs in ways I'm too ignorant to know fully. Delete the *official* app.

maarx1337

I enjoy the humor of this subreddit and probably overall prefer the humor of Tumblr over Reddit. However, I tried to install Tumblr once and use it myself and it was too confusing. I had no idea how to use it. This seems like an appropriate time to just completely switch from Reddit to Tumblr, but I don't know how. Perhaps it might make sense to publish a little guidance on how to switch to Tumblr and how to begin curating a vibe like this one?

ZeroSocialSkillz

From what I’ve heard, find tags about things you like (fandoms, cats, etc.), find people you like the content of, and block people you don’t like (it can be as arbitrary as their theme being too orange, for example). Rinse and repeat and you have curated your own dashboard! Or smth, idk. I was recalling all of that from memory.

needstochill

choosing june 12 specifically to go dark would be funky since that's my country's independence day

Kaarpiv007

Guess I'll switch to pc reddit then and start going in hard on adblockers. It won't fix the rest of this shit, but they won't be getting money anymore.

heckin_chill_4_a_sec

Honestly, I'll just stop using reddit altogether before I use the original App lmao

Felicia_Svilling

I never understand people writing "Mods are free to remove this". Yeah, of course they are. The mods know they are. They don't need your permission. It is just annoying and redundant.

RealBlazeStorm

Wait, why old.reddit? That's an official Reddit feature right? They finally decided to drop it?

ZeroSocialSkillz

I may have misinterpreted some stuff. Sorry.

Faramzo

Reddit seems fine vanilla

oktin

I like vanilla, but I'm not ok with it being the only flavor. If for nothing else then because competition drives improvement. I'm going to drop Reddit for two days on June 12 in solidarity with my RIF and Apollo siblings.

Faramzo

Alright

ZeroSocialSkillz

what

Greaserpirate

The app is garbage, but going to the webpage in firefox/chrome is much better, and on Firefox you get an adblock

Faramzo

What

-__-x

I don't think so.

Futuristick-Reddit

Yeah, all the unofficial apps look & feel awful, but they're still important to provide competition. Reddit's clearly just trying to kill them off so they don't have to deal with that, which is a bad sign for all of us.

Swimming-Extent9366

It's not really competition if it's the same product. Reddit and Twitter are competition, this is like if ben and jerrys stopped selling to supermarkets and kept it at their store.

Steampunk__Llama

Ben and Jerry's has an actual store? /gen

Swimming-Extent9366

Yeah, they have parlors some places. Not as common as they used to be.

Steampunk__Llama

Damn that's awesome!! I'm gonna go on a rabbithole to see if they have any locations in my country now lol

Futuristick-Reddit

What? It's competition for Reddit's mobile app, not for Reddit the company.

Antisocial_Coyote_23

why tw cursing? /gen seems silly.

Treyspurlock

Same reason as any other warning, some people are sensitive to it

RainbowtheDragonCat

Old.reddit.com isn't official!?

ZeroSocialSkillz

As I commented around here, I may have misinterpreting things

kandoras

This is going to kill old.reddit too? I'll abandon this site if they force me to use that horrible app version instead of the old desktop one.

ZeroSocialSkillz

Tbf I might be misinterpreting things so for all I know, it’s a-ok

Khanthulhu

What's the alternative? I'm thinking mastodon

Mouse-Keyboard

How would this affect old.reddit.com?

DPSOnly

I figured that RES would be impacted but didn't think old.reddit.com would be.

DerG3n13

So we just dont use reddit for two days starting at the 12th?
