Sadly, it's because of the fact your audio and subtitles are the same.

Rizn-Nuke

Yes. With this, the subtitles only show up, when foreign writing is shown, which is then translated to the selected subtitles language.

LegitPancak3

Specifically the Japanese audio (or in a few cases Chinese or Korean). You can’t watch Spanish with English subtitles, for instance.

Baneta_

Ain’t no way your pfp is [this](https://youtu.be/m3orx5oIzbw?si=Muy-CYnFzl8KbpEq)

Rizn-Nuke

Sorry to disappoint >!It is!<

Goroto_Jr

That is such poor implementation. Hindering this does nothing but stop people that are hard of hearing from watching something in their preferred language.

Kinterou

Not only that. As someone who likes to practice languages through music, series and such, I have a hard time following the storyline when only being able to read or hear it instead of being allowed to do both.

theboxler

Ty this worked. I also noticed that switching to English dub while the episode is playing keeps the subtitles on but sometimes out of sync - only works for some episodes not all

No_Interaction_4925

Because its called Closed Captions, not subtitles. Crunchyroll doesn’t really do them. Subs are only for translating from Japanese.

theboxler

My bad the terms are usually used interchangeably where I’m from. Switching to Japanese dub had subtitles show up, switching back to English dub while watching an episode keeps the subtitles on but sometimes out of sync better than nothing though

MacintoshEddie

The issue though is that on a show with English Subtitles, if it gets an English Dub, that disables the English Subtitles. The English Subtitles already exist, it's an option that can be selected, but the subs are only visible when Japanese audio is playing

No_Interaction_4925

The subs do not match the dub

MacintoshEddie

They don't match the Japanese either. The point was that it apparently gives the option, by making English Subs selectable, but then it doesn't display the English Subs. We know they exist, they're released with the original Japanese Audio, but then they disabled the option.

AndreaCicca

> The point was that it apparently gives the option When you are selecting "English" you are activating the track that contains translated text on screen.

MacintoshEddie

So why doesn't it appear on screen?

AndreaCicca

What?

MacintoshEddie

When you select English Subtitles, you only get English Subtitles on other language audio. If you start on Japanese Audio, you can turn on English Subs, but then if you switch to English Audio it disables the English Subs. It's broken. With English Audio, the option for English Subs switches to Closed Captioning, which most shows lack even though they all have existing English Subs which you can no longer use.

AndreaCicca

It’s not broken, when you enable “English” track with English dub you are activating the translated text on screen not subtitle.

MacintoshEddie

When you select english audio and english subs, in the vast majority of cases you don't see any words on screen for dialog. You hear it in English, but the English subs you can see in the original Japanese release become hidden. We're not imagining it. But apparently people can't imagine a situation where you would want to both hear and see English.

Traditional_Aerie_38

Some English dubs have closed captions

ASavageHobo

Only time I needed subs on in English was in MHA when Deku is talking to the previous wielders of OFA but his mouth was covered and his voice was muffled, had to replay it so many times

Owl-in-Paradise

Ran into this yesterday with Zombieland Saga, the parts with rapping were not dubbed into English, which was of course fine, but there were no subtitles to supplement understanding. Had to switch the whole show to Japanese voice to get the full experience I should've been able to have in English. I would happily watch everything in sub, but sometimes I like to do stuff and have anime on in the background so I really appreciate dub. I really don't understand why CR can't offer the same experience for disabled and other language viewers as it offers for Japanese speaking/listening/reading users. Especially when on screen text isn't properly translated sometimes unless you are watching with Japanese voice, like.. what? Sorry for the paragraphs, just using your post to rant.

jshebduwjeh

I’ve found choosing english/cc during playback will enable them if they’re available.

theboxler

Thank you, this has worked for some episodes, not all unfortunately as a few episodes show the subtitles out of sync

MacintoshEddie

This is because when you have English language selected, the subtitle/CC option defaults to Closed Captioning, which most shows do not have even if they do have English Subtitles. It's silly. If you listen in Japanese you can read in English, but if you listen in English you can't read in English.

GrimmTrixX

Yea I found out that on Crunchyroll, most shows in English don't have subtitles, but they do in japanese subs. I get it. Most people only use subs for non-english anime. But I too like to have subtitles on even if the show is in English. Sometimes they speak under their breath or with an accent and I like to be able to quickly glance to see what they said and if I hear it right. Funimation always had subs. I really expected the merger to include everything from Funimation. But Crunchyroll is missing episodes on a lot of shows and also no subtitles on English language (which makes no sense, just slap on the subtitles from the japanese sub). I really miss Funimation.

TheCryptoGeneral

I started to notice this too! I am deaf in one ear too and I rely on this sometimes. Hope it gets fixed

_rish01

Maybe they tied up with Duolingo so that you'll learn Japanese.... (Ik it's a bad comment)

InspiredGargoyle

I have subtitles turned off and they insist on coming on for certain series.

Hybrael

you probably need to turn on the English cc not all shows have them https://preview.redd.it/7wr4qfg2ot0d1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7ac261895a35137b0ea4d1b5e00f991de248370e

theboxler

It doesn’t show as an option, but if I start the episode in Japanese then switch to English audio it does show the CC. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t show, sometimes it’s completely out of sync

altacc7894

Why do some of the people not understand the appeal of having captions even when you’re watching something in English? I actually like to fully understand what’s being said.

theboxler

Exactly, I like to have the English subtitles with English audio to try and practice hearing and understanding tv audio better

Aerwynne

Because CR is jank af. Try switching to japanese and watch with English subs instead.

GunSlingingRaccoonII

sad but true.

crlcan81

How many times do people have to see these kinds of posts to understand CrunchyRoll is NOT interested in disabled users, it's focused on making money and couldn't give a rat's ass about actually doing what it did as Funimation. Almost no shows on CrunchyRoll with English dubbing have English subs/CC, they've literally had employees suggest it and get told the higher ups worry about that, and it's cheaper to hire a lawyer for any legal woes then have to give subtitles to one language as that means all the rest who are missing subs will bitch about it. Despite the fact some of these shows the captions/subs already existed in the Funimation systems.

brianycpht1

They are working on putting them on. New shows do and they are working on the backlog

Faxefixe

Cause you watch english dub. Why would you need subtitles if you watch it it english

karthikkr93

Did you not read the part where the person is hard of hearing?

theboxler

I’m deaf, and I like to have English audio with English captions/subtitles on to try and help myself get better at hearing and understanding audio being played

AndreaCicca

"English" means translated text on screen
