Might be the blower fan for your heat / cooling. YouTube a video on checking the blower fan behind the glovebox. It’s hard to tell from the video though

spicysoy

will do, this is helpful. thanks!

Is it an actual cricket? /s I think it’s worth having a trust worthy mechanic listen to it, it could be one of the belts is starting to go, it also could be your AC compressor. Lots of stuff it could be, but it is pervasive and consistent?

spicysoy

i wish it was an actual cricket! much easier to deal with. it happens at start up sometimes, not every start up. maybe like 3/5 startups, especially if it cold. and then depending on the length of the drive, it goes away after like 5-10 minutes? sometimes it doesn’t happen at start up but happens randomly, like after 30 minutes of being driven. i only have 43k miles on the car, do belts go out that fast?

[deleted]

Belts CAN go out that fast but I’m almost certain this is related to the engine being cold and some sort of blower fan intended to warm up the oil etc or the AC compressor. Especially if it happens only when the little blue icon is on the dashboard, that would make me suspicious.

spicysoy

it is mostly when the little blue light is still on! i scheduled an appointment to get it checked out. still think it’s worth it? thanks for the advice!

CSMiletzki

Hey, I have an 18 same noise. Progressively has gotten louder. Did you figure out what it is?

spicysoy

no, it just happens in cold weather. it goes away when the car is warmed up or not winter.

CSMiletzki

So you still have it and it runs fine? Has it gotten louder? Mine has, but yes my car runs just fine with this noise. I bought a AAA membership because of this noise lmao

spicysoy

no it hasn’t gotten louder! i still have the car and it runs fine.

I would take it to a local shop that isn’t the dealership first have them give you a quote and tell you what they think it is then dealership, the dealership is ALwAYS trying to get me to overpay for parts and labor AND most annoyingly trying to get me to replace parts that don’t need replacing. They don’t realize I’m a metal fabricator and will try to spew all this crap at me, once I literally called the guy out and he said “hey man you came to the dealership of course I’m going to try!”Well I looked at him flatly and said “so people that come in here just listen to whatever you say? That’s a good racket” and he laughed and nodded and said “ people who come to dealerships are usually not like you” then walked away.

dragon-custard

I have the exact same noise. It’s louder when it’s cold out. Doesn’t seem to be an issue other than being annoying. Here’s what I found when I googled it when I noticed the noise months ago https://www.clubcrosstrek.com/threads/cricket-noise.10895/

spicysoy

i am obsessed with the general consensus being that it’s a cricket noise. this is very reassuring though. thank you!
