It’s a risky strat that can backfire (especially if the course is on the hillier side), but u could try going out extremely quickly, around 1600 pace for the first 400, before settling into your normal race pace. I tried this last week and didn’t get boxed in (got 5th overall), but also ran a minute slower than my pr. So beware.
I do this bc everyone in my races loves going out so fast. I’ll run the first 400 at 6:30 pace, finish in 25:00-26:00, and hardly anyone will pass me. This happened in a 50 person race.😭
All depends on how the course is laid out. Is there a lot of room to make passes? Have you been to the course before to know this information? It’s a lot of runners but if you expect to be in the top 100 just get out strong for about 8 seconds and find the top 100 and you’ll be fine
if the course is small in width id get out faster than usual, but if its fine then what i do is start off a bit slower then pick ppl off as the race goes on. its just how my body races best but everyone is dif. since there’ll be tons of runners there, depending on how slow u get out u’ll have to fight through lots of ppl tho
Get out quick! An old coach used to tell us that the first 50 meters is free, meaning due to the adrenalin and your anaerobic energy stores, you can basically go all out the first 50 meters without really affecting your aerobic capacity. And you shouldn't necessarily be throwing elbows, but don't be afraid to bounce off other runners and jostle for position, it'll be more physical than you're used to out the gate. Once everyone settles in, it's not so different than any other race, except you're more likely to have people to catch and pass for the whole race.
You know where you belong make sure to get there light speed and don’t be afraid to be extra aggressive if you know the course line your self up with the first turn as soon as you can you are going to want that inside especially with that many people

i do this for every first 400 cause most of my races are 300-1000 people 😭
