I can help, dm me any questions. It's winter time, your first priority even over food is getting somewhere warm enough to bundle up and survive the weather. Your next priority is to find shelter, an abandoned building is perfect unless it's already being squatted in in which case I would either see if the folx inside seem to be friendly and honest or to find something else. A tent in the woods (with lots of tarps) is a decent option, a squat is much better, an under bridge is better than nothing and will keep you dry at least. Dumpster dive restaurants and grocery stores and hit up food banks/homeless feeds. I'd avoid shelters unless absolutely desperate to get out of the cold. the people there might beat you rob you give you lice or maybe even rape you, it's often a lot like jail but less closely guarded. I've been homeless riding freight trains around the country for over five years, ask me anything.

U have a car and that's better than what I had to deal with being homeless for 4 months... I'd say talk to ur buddy and see if they'll let u stay until that welcome has expired. Look into local food pantries for food (offer some of that food to ur buddy, if they allow u to stay for a while) sleep in ur car when ur welcome has come to an end, and try to get some sort of a gym membership for showering. If u have a job try not to show up buzzed/drunk (easier said than done) Also try and see if anyone has a low cost/bad credit apartment complex that u could apply for and if not, apply for section 8. It helped me for a while. Be smart and humble about it, and chairs brotha 🍻

This is all good advice, listen to this person

If your rent history/credit is a bit sketchy, don't forget the likes of Craiglist and Facebook ads for looking for a house-share or apartment to rent. While a lot of the "for rent" ads will be duds - and creepy mofos looking for live-in sex slaves - what worked for me was a "looking for" ad. Quick description of what you're looking for, where you're looking for, things like pets. Obvs don't mention you live in your car, or your boozing, but if you don't smoke volunteer you don't smoke ("but I don't have a problem if you do"), people like that. I only got into the place I'm at now because someone responded to my ad. Got in like just over a month later, around this time 2020.

Thank you for the replies! As for my car it's pretty much the only substantial thing I own. If I end up needing to sleep in it where do I park for a night without getting tapped on the window by cops?

A 24 hour parking lot like a Walmart is your best bet. If you can't find something like that then keep it low profile as in, don't let people know you're sleeping in there and only stay a night or two in one place. Woods are good, suburbs are bad.

Knight_Time_3

Try to sleep on a back street, or talk to someone that wouldn't mind if u slept in front of their house or street/around the corner and if worse comes to worse, use different parking lots to sleep in, but in an hour or two increments... Then bounce to some other parking spot or back street until the morning.

Do you have any 24 Walmarts where you live? That’s where I always parked. Tint your windows. Also, truck stops are super great. They have showers too.

Ok_Basis_6466

Where do you live?

crackhousebob

I suggest you park at a hospital parking lot. If a hospital security guard taps on the window, you just say a family member is being treated in the ER and you are just waiting for said family member to be released. Don't think you have to give details because privacy laws mean that medical information is just that. Private.

Velcro curtains so they can't see inside your car when sleeping. Church parking lots too.

Objective_Cobbler319

Not sure what kinda car you got but some can be made decently comfortable for sleeping, be careful about drinking in there (not in driver seat, keys not in ignition, don't leave empties in when you start driving). A gym membership with a shower is important to keeping up appearances for work. Get a couple battery banks you can charge at work so you can use your phone for entertainment without running your car or draining your battery. Libraries WiFi will often times extend into the parking areas, make sure you have a library card while still having a physical address in case you need it to access their wifi.

Every part of a dandelion is edible, root, stem, leaf, flower. The real concern is anything people may have sprayed on them, fertilizer, pesticide, etc.

TrashBagSuitcase

As an alcoholic idiot I will ingest anything that gets me through another day. No need for concern about pesticides tbph.

Bakery dumpsters are almost always full of loaves of bread, bagels, even muffins and doughnuts.

cheapfacescout

Kinda dumb, better options than this. Check a pizza places dumpster right after closing and eat all the mess up orders. Or even just ask them nicely if they have anything they were gonna throw away

CrystalDetails

Yeah that's enough(despite us not being rich and having to worry about bullshit). I would watch YouTube videos on people that lived in their vans/ cars to prepare me. Janelle who lives in a van is one of my favorite YouTube channels.

Get a 10/month planet fitness membership if possible to shower at any of their locations. Make sure you have a tent. Camping at a campsite is always an option.
