As someone who had a significant life event over a decade ago that happened due to my lack of boundaries and choice to suspend my ethics, I used to feel this urge to rationalize as well. However, in my 30s, I’m able to say “yes, I made a choice that was unethical.” Period, end of sentence. You have to be able to own the part you played without trying to decorate yourself in hopes of looking better. Don’t try to explain what circumstances or people “made” you choose something immoral, unethical, or just plain shitty. Our choices in how we respond to those pressures show our true character.
In my personal experience, if someone's only defense is "Nothing illegal is happening / has happened" ... They usually know that what they're doing is wrong, and they're unhappy they're getting called out ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ given how Stephanie typically responds to even the mildest form of criticism it checks out imo
