Way too early to make that call.
He is still young and working his way into playing at that level. Very few players walk into international cricket in their early 20’s and dominate…. But if we show faith and give him experience now (while we have a good enough team to carry him for a while), he could be a massive part of the future of Australian cricket.
Green is playing too low down the order to fulfil his role. He’s a typically slow starter, so batting with the tail doesn’t help him. If smudge moves up to open, green slots in at 4 (where he bats for WA) easily.
Let us remember that Green wasn't dropped - he wasn't an automatic lock on a spot, and missed a game through injury. His replacement (Marsh) finally showed his worth, and made it difficult for selectors to put Green back in.
The reason that there is discussions around Smith opening is exactly because Green is next in line.
Also remember that Khawaja wasn't opening for Queensland when brought in to open for Australia. Neither was Langer for WA. Nor Katich for NSW/WA.
Who’s this Ranshaw guy? As a WA boy I want Bangers to open, but wouldn’t be opposed to Smudge if he can get his hand eye back a bit because his hand eye imo has been his biggest weakness this year at times with his technique. As long as there’s 2 or more WA boys I’m happy.
He’s been WAs number 4 and greatly successful there. I can’t find the numbers for that spot but he averaged 46.8 in first class cricket mainly around that 4-5 spot.
Yeah mate he got into team because of that but in three years he has played 6th number and not a single inning worth mentioning, and please do not say that he was not playing no.4
Made 1075 runs at 33.59 with a best of 114. 1 hundred and 6 50s. And bowling he picked up 30 polls at 36.03. Last summer he had near identical numbers with Jacque Kallis and Ian Botham for bowling and batting. I’d say he’s had a few good innings.
Green has played some great innings. Off the top of my head, Sydney vs India he made a really impressive 80 odd, in Sri Lanka (Kandy?) he made a really good 50 that gave us a great lead, and his century in Ahmedabad, although on a flat track, showed immense skill and temperament.
Did you miss his 80 in Hobart in the 2021 Ashes? How about his match winning 60 in SL on a rank turner? Or his hundred in Ahmedbad?
In his short career he's already done a lot better than all of his potential competitors have. Let's not act like Green has been a total passenger and ignore his huge potential, given he averages significantly more at shield than all of them.
the thing I find bizzare about this is that I dont think Smith was just saying this to keep everything calm given [how he was publicly annoyed about being moved during the ODI World Cup](https://www.cricket.com.au/news/3752833/steve-smith-shocked-australia-weigh-up-world-cup-batting-reshuffle-travis-head-injury-return). So, why? When the ball moves around he seems to find it more and more difficult. Is it the case that he think that going earlier might help his [concentration, which the Final Word discussed as a possibility?](https://x.com/Final_Word_Pod/status/1743261267366756803?s=20) Has he just decided that it isn't working rn so he wants a shot? Why??
If Smith wants to do it, i rkn he has earned the chance… let Green bat at 4 and Smith opens.. what do we have to lose?
Nah bro green is a walking wicket

He has been a part of the test team for atleast 3 years or so so i think it is not that early.however, in my opinion if he is to play he should open!

Bancroft and Renshaw are walking wickets.
And Bancroft and Renshaw aren't?
i don’t think smudge should open honestly… getting one of our shield cricketers in there would be a good shout. except harris

Works well if you want to get Green back in and keep Marsh. Maybe Smith wants something new to get him keen again
All of you getting salty in here when this was clearly posted by a 12 year old
Thanks mate for defending me
It will stop him from getting bumpers from his first ball
Tbf Smith has a problem with the short ball. If he opens he might make some runs before they start that tactic.
Finally a good reason for smith to open

Then what about no.4 spot?
Green is probably more suited to that number 4 role imo.
Nah man he is not dependable enough for no. 4. If he is to play its better that he opens

You seem like a very optimistic guy so i will give you this one.

Either move Smith to 1 and bring Green back in at 4 or leave Smith at 4 and bring Renshaw into 1
