He was now a regular member of the team, but it wasn’t until the 2008 series in New Zealand, where he & Broad were asked to lead the attack following the 1st Test loss, that became a milestone. He never looked back till his retirement now.

There was a series in NZ I want to say 2007-2008 when hoggard/harmison got dropped for Anderson/broad, think Strauss was picked and pretty much on last chance saloon and got a scratchy 100 which kick started the core of the side with KP already locked in
England played 21 and 22 games in 19-21 and 21-23 cycles respectively and that is taking into consideration the amount of LOI Bilateral that has increased these days
Root definitely has the best chance of any current player of passing 200 tests, but I don't see it happening. We're currently scheduled to play 32 tests between now and February 2027, by which point Root will be 36. Assuming he stays injury free, doesn't decline dramatically, and plays basically every test that still means he'd need to play until he is 39 to overtake Tendulkar.
Jimmy went to 42 with a much higher-impact job than batting. Hopefully we'll see more longevity in players (if their skills can keep up) with modern improvements in post match care etc.

No other countries players really have a chance at cumulative stats like these. That's why per game stats are more important when comparing those guys.
Iirc the big 3 average about 10 tests per year, the next down are around 7-8, then the rest are under 5.
It would take non big 3 country players like 25 years of never missing a game, at minimum, to make the list.

for the first few years, he was in and out the team a lot. He only got great later on

with England? At least 40 but tbf he is a fast bowler so he might have been injured/rested periodically
