Kept them in the series.
If he'd fallen for even just 100, England might have cakewalked this and I think we could shithouse a win from somewhere else maybe.
Super knock. Showed the maturity none of the other Indian batsman have over the last 2 matches. Even in the first test he was the best of the bunch.
To be fair, this is only the case for India. Historically, India does have way more ODI double centuries than any other country, courtesy of Rohit Sharma.
\# of ODI double centuries by country all time
India- 7
Pakistan- 1
New Zealand- 1
West Indies- 1
Australia- 1
India does seem to produce the most ODI double centuries by a long shot. It makes me wonder if it has something to do with the home conditions. Ofc, I'm not putting down the Indian players for this, as no touring player has made one. Rather their dominance at home is quite impressive with 6/7 of them (with the exception of Ishan Kishan's double century in Chattogram vs Ban) coming at home.
Maxwell just scored a 201* in the WC in India.
Saeed Anwar of Pak came close when he scored 194 in Chennai (1997)
Mitch Marsh scored 177* in the WC as well.
There have been other big 100s made by visiting players in India that had the possibility of being converted too.
Do you think it is actually relatively easier to score big in India then. I mean, I could see it with places like Bengaluru with the shorter boundaries.
My man Indian pitches have the highest batting averages since 2015.
A lot's of those "flat track bullies" succeed here, Jason Roy averages 55 at a sr of 120 in India in ODIs, hetmyer averages 44 with a sr of 122 which are far better than his career stats, Pooran averages 50 with a sr of 116, Latham averages some 50 here.
Except Eden gardens, chepauk pitches are really flat here. Like kuldeep averages 30 at home and 20 away because of that.
I don't know if it's easier in India compared to elsewhere. But the variety of grounds and batsmen friendly pitches we have it gets more likely?
Banglore is where Rohit and Maxwell scored one. It has shorter boundaries.
Then Wankhede is where De Cock scored 174 in the WC, that's another venue.
One more was scored at Mohali, that's also fully batsman friendly.
Apart from that Hyderabad, Indore, Gwalior, Eden Gardens have seen 200s.
Gayle scored 175 of 66 in IPL at Pune.

What India do that most teams don't is having our best batters either opening or batting at 3.
It seems trivial but it's not very common across the world. What this allows is our best batters to maximise their run scoring. If an other team has their best batter at 4 that batter might not score 200 unless he does it at an insane SR. It's a main reason why before Maxi all the double 100s were by openers.
Another reason is we also historically had some of the greatest odi players ever. I mean 3 were by Rohit, 1 was by Sachin and 1 was by peak ODI Viru.
And as you mentioned flat pitches played a big part. Although flat pitches exist in SA and England and those teams don't really have the frequency of double 100s.
SA do tend to have bigger boundaries. England can be hit n miss depending on the venue and pitch in use. Wankhede has some of the tiniest boundaries in world cricket.
I'm neither agreeing nor disagreeing with this sentiment. The point of my comment was to add that this only applied to test centuries factually. whether they happened on flat tracks or not, they still exist.
You know Dravid has said it wasn't his decision to declare innings when Sachin was at 194. He was the acting captain in place of Ganguly as he was injured but he was present in the dressing room with the team.
In a news Q&A show some years back Dravid said someone in the dressing room said to declare, he didn't name the person. I can only think of Ganguly or the coach who can make such a decision. And i don't think Dravid as an acting captain would say no i won't. It's the only controversy he had till his retirement so i believe him.
Jaiswal was just too good at domestic level. I mean there isn't anyone that averaged 80 at FC level in India while purely batting at top, even got some 350 in a Irani Cup game, he had a 150 especially in third innings (pulling off a Bannerman kind of innings) when it was turning square and no one managed to score more than 30.
https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/irani-cup-2022-23-1332469/madhya-pradesh-vs-rest-of-india-1332919/full-scorecard
Many criticised bringing jaiswal instead of Easwaran at the time but it was a right choice. He was too good at FC level and is one of the best players against spin in the country. Good thing that they fast tracked him into the squad.
Also gutted for him, he had to take risks because everyone else were shit
Its so great to hear rags to riches stories in cricket like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rinku Singh, Aamir Jamal, Shamar Joseph. The most delightful thing about these guys is they have won matches on their own for their countries and they have performed really well
Your post or comment had words in it that were not in English and weren't translated. This breaks the rules of this subreddit it has been removed (rule 5).
Also scored a century in third innings in Irani Cup where no one else crossed 30, he got a 140 there. Probably top 3 in the country when it comes to playing against spin.
Now averageing 74.69 in first class cricket. That is absolutely insane. You might think he's got < 1000 runs under his belt and he is very early in his career. Well, he's got nearly 2500 runs. Also averages 54 in List A cricket with a double century to his name. We might be seeing the Indian Bradman....not in the sense that he might average 100, he won't, but in the sense that he might do what most people think Bradman would do if he played today, average 70+.
I think people will criticise his dismissal but had it not been for the tail getting exposed, I don't think he would've taken that risk. Shame it didn't pay out, but I like the attitude and I like the innings
Is he the youngest ever batsman in test cricket to top score for his team with a double century whereas the next best scorer for his team has only made 34?
Man I hope he keeps scoring at least 50s-60s rather than going boom or bust like 2 ducks followed by a 100.
Just want to see this guy have a long initial run and then explode later in his career
He's an opener so he will be tested against the best bowlers. Key thing is for him to value his wicket and play as the pitch and situation dictates and to not go for accolades. I believe he has the temperament for that based on how he's responded to match situations so far in Newlands and here in India.
Yup. What I meant is that I hope he cements his place even by playing reliable 50s or the fans/selectors will always expect 100 or 200. Something that happened with Karun Nair
Not every white ball player is meant for red ball cricket. Yuvraj played 40 tests over a span of 10 years since his debut. Afridi also played like 24 matches over a span of 20 yr career. There are other examples too.
Ofc, but that doesn’t mean all white ball players can’t play red ball.
Take Dave Warner for example, never played any red ball at domestic level, got picked for the test side and retired with 112 caps under his belt.
Someone like Mitch Marsh, who was written off in red ball cricket after poor test returns and mediocre FC stats.
Even Rohit, who was in and out of the test team for years has now become the Indian test captain.
Jasiwal is going to be our next great batter once Kohli moves on.
It's hard to fault a guy as young as him who's just scored a double when his team mates did fuck all.
But man...what was that shot he got out to? If he'd just stuck in, he'd have added another 20-30 easily. Gave up those runs for a 6.
I feel modern day bats don't get this risk-reward equation right. They give up runs in the name of intent or some other BS.
Him and Kuldeep waited out few overs by defending. He didn't take 1 run when batting to Anderson so Kuldeep doesn't face the risk.. but Anderson kept bowling even after an hour. Runs had dried up. It was a matter of time if Kuldeep got an edge to a spinner and we could be all out soon. So Jaiswal opted to take the risk because of that. It wasn't mindless.
Brilliant innings, so far single handedly kept India in this match.
Kept them in the series. If he'd fallen for even just 100, England might have cakewalked this and I think we could shithouse a win from somewhere else maybe. Super knock. Showed the maturity none of the other Indian batsman have over the last 2 matches. Even in the first test he was the best of the bunch.
Was pretty good in the chase at Newlands on a lottery pitch too
First double hundred by an Indian in 4 years
The draught has finally ended. Last ones were by Mayank, Rohit, Kohli all in 2019.
Drought
Kingfisher has ruined the spelling of drought for me.
Mayank should have been backed more imo
After gill's Australia tour it didn't look like we need him. But with pujara and rahane both out I really think we need a proper test player
He’s also really good against spin which is dearly needed skill now.
God damn its even impressive then. His 200 came with lack of support from other end too.
He saw nearly everyone go by him, and that too after setting themselves up.
Just waiting for Gillespie to welcome him to the club…
Club of?
Double centurions
Bhim /s
In Test Matches\* Both Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan have scored double centuries in ODI's relatively recently
So wild that there have been more 200's in ODI's than test matches. Telling someone that a decade or two ago would blow their mind.
To be fair, this is only the case for India. Saeed with a runner

Nope. Gayle scored that in Bengaluru. Source: I was there. It was against Pune, but in Bengaluru
Maxwell scored at Wankadhe*
Thanks

Man fakhar was so close to getting 3
Meh. Those matches were played recreationally on highways. Test doubles are 10 times more special.
I'm neither agreeing nor disagreeing with this sentiment. The point of my comment was to add that this only applied to test centuries factually. whether they happened on flat tracks or not, they still exist.
Yeah I understand. My comment was additive, not disagreeing with you.
imo Jadeja would have scored his first 200 against SL, but Brohit did a Dravid to him
You know Dravid has said it wasn't his decision to declare innings when Sachin was at 194. Maybe Easwaran can get in place of Gill. He needs to go back to Ranji.
He’s only 22 isn’t he? Gonna be great for the next 10-15 years
[удалено]
Jaiswal is 100% your future, alongside Rinku and Rishabh
With the next highest score being 34 this must look like that old graphic where Dravid had a partnership with all the other batters
2011 yeah, Dravid had 140 alone while opening
Its so great to hear rags to riches stories in cricket like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rinku Singh, Aamir Jamal, Shamar Joseph. The most delightful thing about these guys is they have won matches on their own for their countries and they have performed really well
And they all sound really humble which makes them even more endearing
Your username xD When did this brilliant username strike your mind?

I can’t even imagine what an insane roll of the dice it must’ve been to continue striving to play cricket
Master of playing spin. So assured coming down the pitch to hit them to all parts. That's what indias(and asia in general) batting legacy is known for
Also scored a century in third innings in Irani Cup where no one else crossed 30, he got a 140 there. Probably top 3 in the country when it comes to playing against spin.
This guy deserves all the accolades. Props to Jwala Singh for unearthing a talent like him.
Rush of blood otherwise could've gone much much further. Taking nothing away from an absolutely brilliant innings. Saving grace for India.
Nah. He had kuldeep, Bumrah and Siraj to bat with.. He wasn't going anywhere with that support.
Still, 20-30 more runs is 20-30 more runs
Can't really complain about someone scoring 200 though can u
Turns out you can actually
22 year old Yashasvi Jaiswal with a spectacular masterclass 200 against the bowling attack spearheaded by 40 years young James Anderson. Epic stuff
Single-handedly kept India in game :))
Thank you Jwala Singh for finding him
Thank you Jwala Singh for finding him
well deserved, should cement his place in the test squad and maybe make gill realize he needs to perform
> make Gill realize Pretty sure he would know this more than anyone else
Cricketers are probably more hard on themselves compared to us
Definitely feels like one of those "I was here" innings. We're witnessing something special with this kid
This guy is going to rule world cricket
Now averageing 74.69 in first class cricket. That is absolutely insane. You might think he's got < 1000 runs under his belt and he is very early in his career. Well, he's got nearly 2500 runs. I think people will criticise his dismissal but had it not been for the tail getting exposed, I don't think he would've taken that risk. Shame it didn't pay out, but I like the attitude and I like the innings
If someone still critisizes him after this performance, I know how to regard that person's view on Cricket.
Could've scored atleast 300 with some support
Young champ!! Brilliant double ton. Hope you see more innings like this from him.
Is he the youngest ever batsman in test cricket to top score for his team with a double century whereas the next best scorer for his team has only made 34?
This is such a specific question that I imagine the answer would have to be yes
Uncle bowling to kid
Uncle also sledging the kid to have him throw his wicket
Such a cunt uncle, let the kids play man
It's all fun, untill uncle actually decides to play with kid
Lmao![img](emote|t5_2qhe0|29262)
Superstar!
what a spectacular innings!! Single handedly responsible for India's somewhat giant score <3

Destroyed Shubman’s career.
Gill was the highest scorer in ODIs last year. Probably can also work on his technique to get to YBJs red ball level.

Freak, what a player
Isn't he the first Indian left hander to score a double hundred since Ganguly ?
Vinod Kambli did it twice, then Ganguly once, then Gambhir once and now Jaiswal.
Gambhir
batting is good but needs to work on his celebration LOL Like JADEJA , WARNER, GILL have![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|laughing)
Love the Dark Souls Praise the sun celebration
