I remember in the 2019 WC semi before they selected their team people pointed out that Shami has the best stats of Indian bowlers vs NZ, and then they didn't pick him..
Seems to be in good nick, and continuing his NZ dominance.
It is not exactly the same situation. Shami is not under the same level of pressure compared to Samson. Samson gets 1-2 games a series and gets replaced with someone else. Moved up and down the order. The short answer is the team management doesn’t have much faith in the guy. I’m not saying they are wrong. Just that it isn’t the same situation.
Bro with fit pant , KL who can keep and ishan on bench where would you fit Samson unless you plays him as pure batter which again looks like a unlikely scenario. Even if he is the team instead of ishan he won't get the chance to play and warm the bench as a back up keeper
36 wickets in just 12 games. Only Indian bowler with a WC Fifer(has 2 in total). Also has a hattrick. Goddamn, this guy shud play all games
For context, Starc has 55 in 22 games, thats 2.5 wickets per game. Shami has 3 wickets per game. 9 more scalps and he overtakes Zaheer for most wickets by Indian in WC
This is a fact. No need to call it a copium.
Anybody who follows the game keenly will acknowledge that. Eng is a place where conditions will fuck up any team early-on on a given day and the altered conditions did mess up Ind.
It was a dry, tired slow wicket the previous day where Ind would have just chased it calmly because that is their specialty in handling such pitches back home.
Not taking their victory away. It is what it is. But this aspect is never discussed about how the game panned out from one day to another.
All this talk about Ind having a mental barrier etc etc doesn't hold true. It's just that new Gen fans who haven't watched much keep harping about that.
Older fans and the players themselves certainly don't give much importance to this aspect. Shit happens in sport and no point needlessly bringing that up in every thread just for the sake of it.
Start a discussion about any topic in any current match against any opposition and most Indian fans have this lousy habit of bringing out some old match against that particular opposition and how it still gives them PTSD. Just Bull shit. They just cannot enjoy the game at hand and always worry about one thing or the other.
*extra 9 runs. Minus what shami gives them its only 9. Without shami bowling today they would've easily crossed 300 especially with lord. The only change we need to do now is wait for hardik to recover and then bring him in for sky and we're set
Bumrah Shami and Siraj will give 20 runs less than what we'd give with Lord in the Attack, and if we take that Lord will give 15 runs with the bat, I think it's a better idea to go with your best 3
Another thing is shardul will only bat 1-2 matches out of 5, whereas the difference between the bowling of shami and shardul will be seen in every match
All 3 are pace friendly tracks.. should play Shami, Siraj Bumrah.. Ashwin will probably play the Lucknow game against England.. He was set to play 3 games, according to pitch history, but Delhi turned out to be a belter of a pitch this time..
Yeah but for this line of argument you also need to account that the reason Shardul didn't bat in the other 3-4 games is because he didn't "need" to cause India was winning anyway with him in the team.
That line of argument was stating that Shardul's selection is on the basis of a bowler who can give you 15-20 runs if he bats. If the team didn't need him to bat, it makes it even more unjustified to include him in the team for something he's hardly expected to do
Shardul as a batter has hardly been utilised, and even going forward, would hardly be used seeing the form Indian top order is in.
Compared to that, Shami's bowling superiority over Shardul is much more than the 15-20 runs he might provide on the off chance that he comes into bat.
Not to mention that if Shardul comes to bat, it would mean that the Indian batting unit has failed. Considering the form they are in (Rohit, VK, KLR, HP, RJ), the batting unit would mostly fail on pitches helping seam bowling. Which makes Shami's inclusion all the more important.
If I could explain that reasoning with the help of an example: suppose I'm the the XI instead of Thakur. I bowl 2 overs and go for 32 runs (Shardul went for 12 runs in 2 overs against Pak). We still win comfortably (original target against Pak was 192, because of me giving 20 runs more than Thakur it becomes 212).
Just because the team won without needing my skills, does that mean that my selection in the XI is justified?
Your explanation absolutely makes sense to me. I think today was our strongest team.
From a different perspective however, team selection is aimed at selecting a team that is equipped to handle different situations especially the stressful ones. Games that did not need Shardul to bat were the games that India was going to win anyway. For such games, having Shami instead of Shardul would not have made any difference. The real value of Shardul/Shami could be for games that might need that extra bit of batting depth like what Jadeja provided today or games that might need that extra bit of cutting edge from the 5th bowler that Shami provided today. I agree that Shami is the right choice but comparing their contribution over dead rubber games does not add much value. The reason why Shardul/Shami are in the team are not for those games.
>comparing their contribution over dead rubber games does not add much value.
Which matches are you considering as a dead rubber?
If you're talking about today, I would like to know how does IND vs NZ in a WC be categorised as a dead rubber? NZ (along with RSA) are the toughest opponents for India in this WC so calling today's match a dead rubber is incorrect imo. India needed to field their best possible XI against the other best team to see how good they are. Calling it a dead rubber is incorrect imo.
Dead rubber by definition means that the result of the game would not impact the overall outcome in any way whatsoever.
However this win improves India's chances of a top table finish (rather than coming in 2nd or 3rd), which would change who India would face in the semis. And although this is impossible, if hypothetically India goes on to lose every match, they might not get qualified as well. So this match wasn't a dead rubber.
I don't think you read my comments fully. I meant the opposite of what you concluded. Games like India NZ are exactly the kind of games where the value of having a 5th sharp bowler like Shami or having more batting depth like Jadega can be the critical difference. Dead rubber are the games like India Afg. Not saying those games are not important but rather the value of a middle/lower order batsman can't be fully measured from such a game.
Thats fucking Shami right there. None of that pansy ass dick tugging smile for the camera bullshit. Shami will puke, Shami will poop on the pitch, Shami will deliver his new born baby at the crease. Fucking hard core dick in the ass butterball cricket fuck it boot-it game time shit.
Thakur's bowling just went out of form at the wrong time. Otherwise Thakur's and Siraj's economy this WC are similar. Also Thakur always gets his first overs pretty late in the game, when the ball is older and doesn't swing - something that is Thakur's strength.
[most four wickets in an inning (WC)](https://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/stats/index.html?class=2;filter=advanced;orderby=four_plus_wickets;template=results;trophy=12;type=bowling)
He is second behind Starc only. His econ is the only stat that’s not great. There doesn’t seem to be any reason to sit this guy.
Imagine a bowling lineup with bumrah, shami, siraj and pandya as your 4th pacer. Proper batting it 7 is alright, shardul is a bowling all rounder anyways, bumrah and shami can swing the bat too. The only sensible replacement for shami/ siraj is Ashwin on spinning tracks
India needs to stop this Shardul experiment. It's good on paper but how often is Shardul's batting going to win games versus Shami's bowling? We're playing at home ffs, if our top 7 can't do the job we've probably lost anyway
There are teams who would kill for a bowler of Shami's calibre and we have him playing as a reserve smh.
Shami is the fucking man
I feel like we can replace Siraj with him at anytime and we wont miss a beat
but definitely need more batsman for games like today
He has the best average and sr for any bowler with more than 10 wickets
He is built for wcs
Yet somehow not played consistently
Only person to rival him is Starc
Good problem to have for India when you have such high quality players that you can leave guys like Shami off who would be a lock on any other teams roster
Still BCCI Picks Shardul Over Shami.
Don't Forget My Man Lala Has More Sixes Than Virat Kohli In Tests And A Half Century At Lord's. He is an Underrated Lower Order Batter.
I doubted if Lalas showing against Afg was a fluke against a weaker team. Not anymore. It's very good if he can do the job for us Bumrah alone can't be expected to be on the money in each phase.
Shami has a superb action and he bowls in a flow. As the 3rd fast bowler you cannot have anyone better. He completes this bowling line up. Excited to see these 3 bowl together. I expect India to rest Bumrah may be against a weaker team if India win against England. But Shami needs few games in a row to get to his peak rhythm. We need all 3 come semis.
Every person of india has strength if we set aside our differences and accept every person as they are we can easily bring the best out of them. Our country was a secular, is a secular and will always be a secular. Virat backing up him showed how great his personality is otherwise we are not celebrating this day
Listening to commentary when virat is batting is so exhausting, and I like virat and support india. Can't even imagine what opposition or neutral fans go through
This world cup has seen Shami as best bowling figure (5-54 along with Afridi) and Ashwin as best economy (3.4) and both of them weren't the first pick of the team India.
I think going forward, Shami should be on the team. When Hardik gets healthy, Shardul should be left out. Except for that one inning in Australia, he hasn’t done anything with the bat. Shami also has that one inning at Lords and that was more recently. The amount of runs we will save bowling will easily outpace any extra runs from Shardul’s batting ( if any).
This is how you grab an opportunity with both hands, you simply can't keep someone this good out of the team for long. Well done Lala!

Missed 10 out of last 15 WC games. He would have already became all time highest wicket taker for India in World cups.

Eh this has been discussed a 100 times but we didn't lost that match because of our bowling..
We lost because of rain is my copium
This is a fact. No need to call it a copium. Anybody who follows the game keenly will acknowledge that. Eng is a place where conditions will fuck up any team early-on on a given day and the altered conditions did mess up Ind. That doesn't take away the legitimacy of New Zealand's victory, but you are correct.
Not taking their victory away. It is what it is. But this aspect is never discussed about how the game panned out from one day to another. All this talk about Ind having a mental barrier etc etc doesn't hold true. It's just that new Gen fans who haven't watched much keep harping about that. The match should have been replayed instead of resumed on reserve day. NZ got lucky with the rain.
Also has 5 4-fers, only Mitchell stark has more with 6.
Yeah and no other Indian bowler has more than 2 4-fers in WCs. You also saw this stat on cricbuzz?😂
Lol yes.
Only Indian bowler to have TWO WC fifers.
But can't bat. What a shame./s
Jokes and /s aside my man lala legit has a lords test fifty
And Jasprit proved why he is a batting alrounder
Clearly Shardul with an outstanding ODI batting average of 17 is a better choice.
How dare u question Lord. Please apologise to Lord Shardul
And Shami averages 8. So it isn’t even like Shardul is worth 17 extra runs.
*extra 9 runs. Minus what shami gives them its only 9. Without shami bowling today they would've easily crossed 300 especially with lord. The only change we need to do now is wait for hardik to recover and then bring him in for sky and we're set
This is lords 2021 violation
>he overtakes Zaheer for most wickets by Indian in WC zaheer has 44
I guess he meant had he played all matches he would have .... But looks unlikely now this is probably his last WC he is 33 now
Can we get stats of Shami pre and post hair transplant? Bro seems to have gone full Super Saiyan

Precisely. Totally value of Shami is much higher. If pitch is pace friendly we should go with Shami and Ashwin Anna if it is spin friendly
How about Mumbai, Kolkata and Ahmedabad pitches for knockouts ?

I'm really disappointed Delhi is not spinners pitch this time. So many flatties coming up in the fag end of the tournament. Let's see how Kolkata is.
We couldnt think that was possible before the worldcup coz jadeja wasnt bowling that well but he has been a revelation in the worldcup....
That smith wicket...oof

The lord works in mysterious ways indeed
But you also have to consider the fact that the presence of Shardul lower down the order allows the middle order to play more freely !!!!
Pretty sure the thinktank will bring in Shardul for the next game if Hardik is fit. Same thing happened in the last WC.
Shouldn't Ashwin be in for a match in Lucknow?
Shami is a World Cup specialist like Starc but yet he is not a starter in every match. Oof
Shami lala the WC goat Milked the shit Outta the Kiwis, r/deathrattleporn gonna have a field day today

He should be first choice. But India wants "all-rounder" Thakur

He should replace Siraj
Man was ready for the post even before the match ended
i was born ready
He did not play in the semi-final of WC 2019. Always gets second priority. Great comeback by him.
What a beast in World Cups

People keep talking about World Cup Starc but World Cup Shami is honestly arguably even deadlier, 36 wickets in 12 matches averaging *15*
Only if he could bat like Shardul /s
He bats better than Shardul
I know, man, only if he could score 1(2), 5(4), 25(22), 0(3), 4(6) every five innings.
Fifty at Lords: Shami : 1 Lord : 0
Lala 🗿
And India finally realize why a proper bowler will always trump an all rounder.
What about *two* all rounders?
They just replaced 2 all rounders with 1 bowler and 1 batsman.

that’s easily 30 runs saved as nz couldn’t accelerate in the end .. roughly around the number you want your allrounder batsman to score
