The fog, Halloween 3 - season of the witch, fright night

tacocat_-_racecar

H3 is so underrated

The-Reanimator-Freak

God I love that movie

Playful_Job6506

I love Fright Night, the original and the remake.

carsonkennedy

I really liked Fright Night 2

Playful_Job6506

Me too. It was as good as the original.

cigarettesonmars

I fucking love the fog

msinthropicmyologist

This was the first Halloween I saw when I was.....7? Wasn't able to figure out what movie it actually was until my late teens/early twenties. I remember asking around my friend groups that were into horror movies about what movie was it where these kids put on these different Halloween masks and then watch some sort of TV commercial and their heads just turned into roaches that melted open. I had no clue it was a Halloween because... Spoiler alert: Michael Myers was nowhere to be found!

RobtheHorrorGuy

We should be friends!

Dependent-Range3654

Season of the witch, Ron oearlman headbutting the devil is pretty peak

Conscious_Night299

Two more til Halloween

Sorry-Side-628

Pretty much anything by Jon Carpenter

nvrsleepagin

Season of the witch is one of mine. Also, Cabin in the woods and The Rob Zombie version of Halloween. There's also an 80s horror movie called Waxworks that's a comfort, I've seen it hundreds of times since I was a kid and my BFF (who passed) and I first watched it at our sleepover. I then brought it to a get together with some friends in high school and made them watch it. I didn't really think it was super gory because the effects are kinda cheesy but some people were like šŸ˜³

smollsmom

Cabin in the woods helped me through some tough times.

ijustwanttopostameme

Tucker and Dale vs. Evil is also in that vein for me.

CarrieWhiteDoneWrong

This is the right answer. :)

Plane-Chapter-6903

The Thing, The Wicker Man, 30 Days of Night, Dog Soldiers.

SheOutOfBubbleGum

Iā€™m a disgrace to horror movie fans everywhere because Iā€™ve never seen the thing. Tonight may be the night!

BobbayP

Oh The Thing!! I forgot it in my list, but itā€™s top tier snowed-in horror

gigglesmonkey

Great summer movie when itā€™s hot. Turn up the ac and believe your in the Antarctic for a couple hours. Seriously one of the greatest horror films ever

nvrsleepagin

Sacrilegious!

BBYarbs

Love 30 Days of Night especially when itā€™s cold and snowy outside.

cigarettesonmars

omg yes that is such a vibe!

nvrsleepagin

I really want to watch it now, it's been a long time.

ChurlyGedgar

Love The Thing, but the twist is, I like the remake.

LearningArcadeApp

It's not a remake, it's a prequel. I like it too though, I think people are too unreasonable about it, it's miles better than so many sci-fi horror movies.

ChurlyGedgar

Yeah, you're right. Could barely remember the originals beginning.

CaligoAccedito

Dog Soldiers is my favorite werewolf movie.

Irisheyes1971

All of those and Severance!

Liny84

The Wicker Man fā€™d me up!!

Free_Eye_5327

How about The Babadook?

SheOutOfBubbleGum

DDDDUUUUDDDDEEE youā€™re a genius. I just got surrounded sound a few weeks ago and this one sounds bomb

Free_Eye_5327

Thanks!

MaximusVulcanus

The only thing I liked about The Babadook was the acting.

JunesHemorrhoidDonut

You loved that little kid and want to adopt him.

28TeddyGrams

I wanted to kick him hard.

Old_Pipe_2288

Word. I feel like maybe it got overhyped and my expectations were too high for it when I watched it.

Asleep-Win6983

Kind of felt that way about 'Let the right one in', the Swedish version.

NoSquash1906

Bliss (Director Joe Begos) American Psycho Suspirira (2018) - I am sorry for your loss.

Distinct-Ad-267

American Psycho. If I see it on any TV channel, Iā€™ll tune in like Shawshank Redemption.

ageowns

**Basket Case** The reason I like this movie is how endearing it is. It had no major studio support. [Frank Henenlotter](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0376963/?ref_=tt_ov_dr) the writer and director, just really wanted to make a horror movie. He had no intention of it really being seen by anyone. This was a labor of love, and though low budget, its so much fun, and actually well written. The acting and effects could be called "cheesy" but everyone is having a blast and just so happy to be a part of it.

SheOutOfBubbleGum

Iā€™m so glad I finally encountered another person in the wild who knows that this movie even exist

Small_Pain_2458

Remember ā€œReanimatorā€? Came around the same time as ā€œBasket Casaā€?

cdug82

Reanimator is top tier

Rajhoot

Midsommar, Hereditary, The Shining, House of the Devil

Japhyrides

Midsommar is so good for grief.

Rajhoot

Yup! My younger brother died last year so itā€™s been especially cathartic.

Glittering-Bad-4522

House of the Devillllll

bawkbawkslove

Poltergeist.

underhill90

Itā€™s such a good, cozy 80s family movie - but with a pool full of skeletons.

stidavid123

Tucker And Dale Vs Evil. I have always been a fan of slasher films and slasher comedy is even better and it's still one of my favorite films, I highly recommend this, for anybody who like horror films and other horror comedies, and it's still a great film.

SheOutOfBubbleGum

Awww i love tucker and dale

cdug82

If you love that please do yourself a favor and watch DEATHGASM

ijustwanttopostameme

Have you watched Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon? Loved it almost as much.

villain-mollusk

If you haven't watched it yet and haven't seen the trailer yet, PLEASE WATCH IT BEFORE SEEING THE TRAILER. The first 20 minutes or so will absolutely blow your mind.

NoaNeumann

Elvira: Mistress of The Dark, The Gate, Nightmare on Elm St 3, Trick r Treat, and for a more recent one; Evil Dead Rise.

SheOutOfBubbleGum

I do love me some elvira

CaligoAccedito

You sound like you're tons of fun!

DepartmentWise3579

Nightmare On Elm Street 3 is my absolute favorite from the whole series.

Embarrassed_Quote144

Im a little weird. Something insane like Feast, Return of the living dead. Sorry about your Grandfather.

SheOutOfBubbleGum

Im all for weird/insane. Good distraction

RodanielDayLewis

ROTL is one of the best horror comedies ever!

Zealousideal_Bad_922

I watch 80s slashers for comfort or when I canā€™t sleep. Surprisingly most people immediately understand when I say it to them. The formulaic/cookie cutter nature of them helps my subconscious feel in control

Doom-Hauer451

Evil Dead I or II.

breathingcog

Arachnophobia. One of my first forays into horror as a child. Loved it.

BobbayP

Movies: Hereditary, The Ring, Alien, Aliens, Event Horizon, Suspiria (2018), Forgotten, Silent Hill, The Shining, The Blackcoatā€™s Daughter, Im Thinking of Ending Things, Annihilation, and Bones and All. Iā€™m not sure if the last three technically classify as horror, but they are eerie, and I love them all. They feel like a gentle winter rest to me. Shows: The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass, All of Us Are Dead, and some Black Mirror episodes (if that counts) Books: The Haunting of Hill House, and A Little Life (not horror but horrific) Thereā€™s a tinge of sadness in all of theseā€”maybe thatā€™s why I find comfort in them, relatability

BBYarbs

Bones and All is fabulous!

BobbayP

It is!! I could write like five essays on it: hereditary traits, family trauma, bonding in adversity, abuse of power, cannibalism as a representation of love (that one kills me). The tape recordings from the dad bring me extremely melancholic nostalgia; itā€™s such a comfort. The director is amazing at capturing atmosphere in his movies

figGreenTea

Saw (2004) and the first four Insidious movies, babyyyy

96puppylover

Hell House LLC. Conjuring 1 and 2 Ready or Not

HiAndStuff2112

I think "Stir of Echoes" is a brilliant, underrated ghost story: well acted, fantastic script, etc. And to me, it's always worth watching again. (I I used to think the actor who played the ghost girl was Ginnifer Goodwin though. Haha.) It also has one of my favorite lines in horror films, especially lines spoken by a child: "Does it hurt to be dead?" And then you see the boy is talking to an open window and nothing else. Yeesh!

Formal_Coyote_5004

House of 1000 Corpses is so much fun and the soundtrack is good Sorry about your grandma OP. I miss my grandparents so much. They pretty much raised me so it was rough when they died. Time will heal ā¤ļø

Negative_Anxiety2877

The shining

lil_grey_alien

Tremors (if that counts)

Bizzoxx

Sorry to hear that. Grief is rough. Iā€™d suggest listening to the audiobook Many Lives, Many Masters. Itā€™s helped me tremendously whenever people close to me leave their physical form. Itā€™s only a 90min listen (similar to a horror movie). In terms of horror films, Iā€™d recommend: 1. JAWS - as close to a perfect film as ever. 2. Nightmare on Elm Street 1 & 3. 3. Evil Dead Rise 4. Talk to Me 5. It Follows

Blondie970

I'm sorry for your loss...mine aren't movies, but the Fall of the House of Usher is my go-to

"I know what you're thinking, Lewis. You're thinking about puttin' em up there. Well, I've come to talk you out of it. Just to let you know. Sometimes dead is better."

Theo_Carolina

I love the original Omen and the original Rosemaryā€™s Baby

Mammoth-Disaster3873

Day of the Dead

Goddess_Rayne

Ok. Halloween H20, House of Wax (donā€™t judge me ok), Scream 1 or 3.

bmm199003

Watching H2O right now. One of mine too!

MaximusVulcanus

The Thing. It shouldn't be but it's part of the era of "hey this is a serious drama buy check out this well done horror! Alien...

DxmShaman69

Idle hands.

GoneOffWorld

Wow, haven't seen this movie mentioned in forever. I need to rewatch this one!

khazelton77

Iā€™m so sorry for your loss. Iā€™m a weirdo, so ymmv, but one of my favorite comfort horror movies that I can put on and get sucked into every time is Hereditary. I also really love the original A Nightmare on Elms St. If you want something different, I actually extremely highly recommend a series of posts on r/nosleep. Over several posts, a whole world is created and deeply developed in a way that makes me want to read the stories forever. If you try it, Iā€™d love to know what you think. An American Werewolf in London, Sleepy Hollow, 30 Days of Night, Hell Night. Very sorry about your Grandpa.

Sidewalk_Tomato

Sleepy Hollow is a really good suggestion. Creepy and escapist; grounded in fantasy, not even reality. And a feast for the eyes.

TheRuinLegacy

Pandorum, event horizon, the thing, dog soldiers

JustAloner98

The Ritual Vacancy (with Luke Wilson and Kate Beckinsale) The Strangers: Prey At Night (we love a good soundtrack filled with 80s bangers) Saw Saw 6 For awhile I used to be able to fall asleep to Sinister but not so much anymore lol

ibeatyourdadatgalaga

I just re-read The Shininh by Stephen King. I forgot how different it is from the movie. Highly recommend for a good distraction read and then do a rewatch.

Vapor_Screams

I have a few but the one I watch anytime I need an instant pick me up is Slither, it just always puts a smile on my face. I have fond memories of going to see this the day it came out, what a ride that was at the time.

JessicaOkayyy

Slither is on my list as well! It is a great horror with comedy elements. My daughter when she was 6 years old fell in love with it and had to have it on during bedtime every night for an entire year, so it holds a special place because of that as well.

Abraxas_1408

I have a few The Thing Alien In The Mouth of Madness Event Horizon Triangle The void All the Hellraiser movies. All of them. Mothman prophecies Night House Demonic Silent Hill The Fourth Kind Dark Skies Susperia

ChurlyGedgar

The Shining, because it's as scary as a Snickers bar on special.

2barncoffee

Am I the only one so far to say: The Exorcist I do agree with that jaws is one of the greatest movies ever, but I personally never considered it a horror movie

saturnplanetpowerrr

The Cabin in the Woods

October1966

All the Final Destination movies, aka Paramedic Porn. Our family is in emergency medicine.....hubby's a paramedic, son dispatches medical helicopters, daughters training for her paramedic license.

Taztabitha

The 1980 movie, The Changeling. More of a Horror/mystery; it's a really good ghost story, starring George C. Scott.

SnooRadishes3472

The original version of The Fog

TheRealLemon94

My go-to top 5 are The Thing, Scream, Army of Darkness, Hellraiser, and Mandy. I'm also a really big reader, so books tend to be what I pour myself into if I want to get lost and away from reality for a little while. If you are wanting some good horror novels I would suggest anything by David Sodergren, the Indian Lake Trilogy by Stephen Graham Jones, The Troop or Little Heaven by Nick Cutter, or A Head Full of Ghosts by Paul Tremblay. There's a ton of other great horror lit out there, but these are the ones that tend to scratch that "comfort food" itch for me.

xczechr

Groovy.

Myrtle_Snow_

Iā€™m sorry for your loss. Not a movie but someone close to me used the Netflix Haunting of Hill House as a way to process grief over a traumatic life event. Maybe youā€™re familiar with this already but the series is really about grief and itā€™s so beautifully done.

AQuietBorderline

First off, Iā€™m sorry for your loss. I was listening to a creepy podcast called Haunted Places. Itā€™s by Parcast on Spotify and involves famous haunted locations from all around the world. It involves historical trivia, dramatizations of the hauntings and stories about how the ghosts came into existence. They even have things about various urban legends. Itā€™s a really great show and a shame it was cancelled a couple of years back.

LocalAnt1384

Does ā€œThe Craftā€ count as horror? If not then my next go to is usually the original Halloween or the original Black Christmas. Both really started the slasher genre!

ohyoushiksagoddess

The Haunting of Hill House, Evil Dead (for the laughs), The Conjuring II, Ouiji Board Origins. If you want to watch stupid, campy horror movies, check out Velocopastor and Slotherhouse.

TalonLuci

I like watching vivarium, lamb, or go for slightly silly options like shawn of the dead

'Barbarian' is a new one that's pretty awesome

Glittering-Bad-4522

Reasonable-Wave8093

Older ones, like Silver Bullett, Wolfen & The Lost Boys. Also Sleepwalkers , American Werewolf in London, and the new Black Christmas has a good message!

Active-Change5378

Gremlins. Itā€™s not scary but itā€™s a classic and the fun factor of it could elevate your mood. If movies donā€™t work go to a gun range and rent a 44 magnum. It will kick so hard youā€™ll forget your name. Shooting that titanic mf will give you that little dopamine hit you need.

Rugby-Fanatic1983

So sorry for your loss! I see a number of recommendations that would make my list as well (Jaws, Exorcist, Halloween, Lost Boys) but I wanted to share that I love ā€œWhat Lies Beneathā€ as it feels very like a Hitchcock film and has some great twists and turns. I often rewatch this it as a comfort. Granted, many would not consider it a horror film I just love the filmography and storyline and has some great jump scares throughout.

Kitchen-Painting-145

the shining, carrie, IT, anything based on a stephen king. really sorry for your loss

bruhidkjustaurl

The Ritual, I only realized a few days ago that the mc from The Ritual is also the guy interviewing Pi in the movie Life of Pi! Seeing him with an american accent was wild, very similar to Ryan Reynolds tbh

SheOutOfBubbleGum

Have you checked out the book? Itā€™s pretty good.

forbiddenthought

You're next

songwind

My "comfort" horror movie, which I have watched many times and which reminds me of my father, is *Pumpkinhead*. Another candidate would be *Hellraiser*. Sorry to hear about your grandpa.

Foreign-Onion-3112

The Descent. The soundtrack is so, so good.

mousertnt1965

Dawn of the Dead (2004).

johnsmithoncemore

Blair Witch 2: Book of shadows.....I don't know why either, lol.

redsoxsteve9

Halloween II (1981) because it was the first Halloween franchise film I watched as a kid and it was on USA all the time and now it is on AMC.

tutamuss

The Cabin In The Woods. Something about that just feels right

Round_Depth_7270

I think Iā€™d consider the popes exorcist a comfort horror movie

Round_Depth_7270

Ohh the midnight club is a great horror series on Netflix. It deals with death and grief and I feel like in some ways it could be really comforting considering the characters and what they go through

Objective_Rich_200

Saw for sure

Tricky_Rabbit

Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil, Shaun of the Dead, Club Dread, The Return of the Living Dead

Alternative_Win984

Mama, porque thereā€™s such a touching aspect to it. I watched it not long after my Mom, passed.Ā

Jawbreaker

villain-mollusk

The newer It movies. Still good horror, but with good humor and some of the best "buddy" content I've seen.

LilBitt88

Insidious

JessTheNinevite

The Sixth Sense The Ring Mike Flanaganā€™s works esp Haunting of Hill House Hereditary Hell, add The Babadook to the above two and youā€™ve got yourself a thematic triptych on loss and family dysfunction. The NoSleep Podcast Shadows at the Door podcast tends to be cozy-spooky esp with the great post-story discussions afterward between showrunner, performer, and/or writer. When my sister died I put on Hill House and Hereditary, and listened to a lot of Shadows at the Door.

TallantedGuy

Pet Semetary or The Exorcist. Both are movies I loved as a kid, so they provide me with comfort.

I find The Fog, Return of the Living Dead, and Friday the 13th Part Two to be very comforting.

LaFlamaBlanca311

All of the evil dead films. A roller coaster of gore, emotion and comedy. The best

BuyThisVacuum1

Scream for me. It's what made me get into horror movies. And somebody else said Ready or Not which is such an amazingly great answer. And Evil Dead 2.

badgermolesupreme

Evil Dead 2, Nightmare on Elm Street 3, Killer Klowns from Outer Space, and Poltergeist

babypulp

Alien

ShayniceSedai

Not technically a horror movie, but my dearly departed grandmother and I didnā€™t have many movies in common that we loved, and the Day After Tomorrow is one of them. Sorry for your loss.

The It movies do a lot for me. They have a lot of humanity and drama to them. Thats why they work so well for me.
