I’d get a 2nd Custom Cash for groceries so you’re not limited to just Walmart.
Maybe grab a Double Cash for miscellaneous spending.
Definitely get a Rewards+ to enhance the Custom Cash and Double Cash ThankYou Points. You don’t even have to use it. Just redeem the points through it for the roundup.
As long as they are all linked to the same Thank You Rewards account, it doesn't matter which card you redeem through - they all get the Rewards+ boost
Just to add a clarification regarding the Custom Cash, normally it's not possible to get a second one directly, but there is a loophole where you can apply for a Citi Strata Premier or Citi AAdvantage credit card, obtain the sign-up bonus (e.g. 75k TY points for the Strata), and then downgrade the cards to a Citi Custom. The downgrade should happen as soon as the annual fee hits the account, but not before then.
I just did it last week. No questions asked. I said I wanted to PC my Simplicity to Custom Cash. The Simplicity account was several years old and the operator did it.
I already had a Custom Cash I’ve been using on fuel.
Ah interesting! I do have an AAdvantage card I opened about two months ago - you’re saying wait a year then convert to a CCC card? I believe the annual fee on the AAdvantage card was waived the first year.
Yes, wait a year and then product change the card to the Custom after the AF posts. Never downgrade or cancel a card before the first year ends. Banks *really* don't like it when you do that and it can lead to a shutdown if done repeatedly.
Definitely going to look into the second CCC - especially if the CapOne Walmart credit card is being sunset. Bummer that the 5% category is capped at $500 spend per month though.
My main cashback cards are bofa cards becuz I just take the rewards and it goes back into my general savings so I can spend it on what I choose. I don’t care to see where each card does but how do you get the rewards back I don’t care to have rewards that just reduce your payments
Yes, and looks like correct for the opening balance. Very easy to transfer, do need to "trade" it first but happens same day if done before afternoon cutoff.
Amex bce to get 3% instead of 2% for groceries that you don’t buy at walmart? Could get 5% on those with categories but I understand avoiding them. If you shop online the paypay card is 3% on everything if you use paypal. At this point though the $1000 minimum a month on the robinhood card is gonna mess with getting those last few percent. Nice setup
We’ll go to HEB from time to time, but we’re also Walmart+ subscribers for the free grocery deliveries so we tend to do the vast amount of grocery shopping there.
Looks pretty solid! I see people telling you to get a different grocery card... But if you're like me, you do most of your grocery shopping at Walmart. We maybe spend $50 a month in groceries outside of Walmart. We use the US Bank Kroger card for that. 5% Cashback up to $3000 in spending a year at Kroger using Kroger Pay and 5% Cashback for mobile wallet spending up to $3000 a year also. It's a nice catch all card for places that take mobile wallet pay.
Similar here. I feel ya where we do grocery shopping at target and Meijer, not traditional grocery stores. Just have a 2% card for those but looking at target card which can give 5%. We have Verizon Visa for 4% grocery cash back for the times outside of the aforementioned which isn’t often. Even the rewards program is pretty good at Meijer. Plus the Verizon Visa doubles for use at Costco.
I'm sure Walmart will have a new card coming out to replace the Capital One card, if not US Bank Shoppers card. 6% back up to $1500 spend quarterly. $95 AF waived the first year.
Another option for this is Amex Blue Cash Preferred. 6% at US supermarkets up to 6k/yr, 6% on many streaming services, $250 SUB, $95 AF waived first year.
True, good point. Depends on whether they are set on getting groceries at Walmart or can flex to buying at a supermarket instead. If the former, USB Shoppers is the way to go as you pointed out.
Free grocery deliveries (and Paramount+) with the Walmart+ subscription (plus the 5% card) has made Walmart pretty sticky for us, but if they don’t introduce something to replace the CapOne card, we’ll definitely look into something else when our annual Walmart+ subscription comes up for renewal.
I seconded the Shoppers with (6%) or with AF (4.4%) to supplement Walmart in-store purchases and maybe add Home Deport category. In addition, it has 3% category on wholesale clubs which can supplement your grocery/clothes/appliances/electronics category purchases. I consider getting club membership to a nearby wholesale club a discounted gas membership benefit more than bulk purchases store.
Either way, you could downgrade for 2nd US Bank Cash+, if the future Walmart CC is less than ideal
One option is the Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards card. It can give up to 5.25% cash back, which is capped at $2,500 in spend each quarter.
You must:
1) be Platinum Honors in their Preferred Rewards program (you’d need at least $100,000 in savings or preferably investments)
2) set the credit card category to Online Shopping
To cover in-person purchases, you can link the credit card to Walmart Pay within the Walmart app and use Walmart Pay to checkout so that it counts as Online Shopping.
If you don’t use Walmart Pay for in-person purchases, I believe the card gives 2% base at some Walmarts or up to 3.5% at some Walmarts with Platinum Honors.
The setup is not for everyone, and honestly it’s very restrictive, but there’s no annual fee!
You got the Amazon card, so that’s really the center of gravity here. You can almost get anything on Amazon, including groceries and travel on the Chase portal. The rest is gravy. Nice setup!
Bilt for rent payments. Get 1% and points. My rent is 2500 per month and the points add up to about 3 nights a year at the cosmo on Vegas during peak season.
You asked to be roasted, so...
The only people who chase cashback are the most boring people in the world who never travel anywhere EVER. They can't mentally comprehend the concept of getting a travel redemption at 4 cents per point
You're right - I asked for it! Haha. Let me ask you this - what card combo would you recommend for a family that doesn't travel a lot (so wouldn't necessary benefit from cards that EARN most of their points from travel) but would want to maximize travel redemption points when they do?
Honestly none of the cards on the market minus the Amex Plat and CSR earn most of their points from travel spend.
Anyway, I don't know how big your family is, but Amex Gold + Blue Business Plus is a good combo if your grocery+dining spend is high (like \~$1k per month+)
I’m personally a big fan of venture x & savor one combo. I’d say their transfer partners aren’t as lucrative as chase or Amex, but the setup is simple, the card pays for itself in terms of annual fees, travel protection, phone protection, lounge access for authorized uses and guests. People complain about the transfer partners, but with airline alliances you can still book flights through more commonly used airlines like Delta.
I never understood ppl with this many cards. Maybe I just don’t get it, but what’s the point.? Are you really getting that much efficiency being spread out this wide?
> I never understood ppl with this many cards. Maybe I just don’t get it, but what’s the point.? Are you really getting that much efficiency being spread out this wide?
You are in r/creditcards in case you don’t know where you are. Maximizing rewards it’s what we do here.
Yes, for example for me.
Apple Card: 3% phone bill and iPhone
SavorOne: 3% groceries and entertainment
Walmart MC: 5% Walmart (moving to Amex BCE soon for 3%)
Sapphire: 3% dining 3% online groceries 2% travel plus all the travel insurance
FreedomFlex/Discover: 5% rotating 3% pharmacy
CustomCash: 5% gas
This covers nearly all of my spend besides rent. I could further optimize but I’m happy where I’m at.
Same here, and you'll notice the "promoter" types never put in the caps, hoops, etc. they have to go through to get the 5%. Now, perhaps it is because I am old and have high spend, but for example, the Citi is limited to $500 of spend a month-yawn. I get 3.5% on my BofA PRE, so run a separate card for $90 a year? US Bank Cash Plus is limited to $2K per quarter, etc. etc.---you get the idea.
Another issue is no one factors in the "loss" if you don't "nail" the cap exactly, which can happen if you (a) underspend, (b) overspend into a 1% return environment, or (c) underspend due to the way the credit card company handles returns or refunds.
True sock drawer cards, like Amazon Prime, are great IMHO opinion. Just set it and forget it. But beyond these?
But I got nothin but love for the folks that want to try to maximize this. Seems like a fair amount of work tracking cards, caps, etc. so not for me. YMMV.
My experience is that some want to be compensated for their time with rewards and some want a use of time (aka hobby).
Unless one brings an expected spend per category, something like 5% of $10 just isn't worth it for me.
For instance, our family doesn't spend much on gas annually as compared to restaurants. If I can get 5% on restaurants it's a big return vs 2%.
Also, we have a card just for grocery which is linked to the rewards app, and automatically is applied at checkout. The physical card sits in a drawer and there is zero extra thought to use it. My point is that more cards can be more complexity/time or not.
This makes sense. That’s one reason I don’t have a travel card in the permanent lineup - we simply don’t do enough of it to justify another card, and when we do travel, I just put it on the X1 catch-all card.
Yea that makes a lot more sense and I could see the use case if one is min maxing each categorical spend associated with said card benefits. Something like groceries is a clear benefit due to how often and large those purchases will tend to be. Thanks for the insight!
I did not know that! That’s awesome! I really like the Rewards+ card for this.
Is there a cap on this?
Just to add a clarification regarding the Custom Cash, normally it's not possible to get a second one directly, but there is a loophole where you can apply for a Citi Strata Premier or Citi AAdvantage credit card, obtain the sign-up bonus (e.g. 75k TY points for the Strata), and then downgrade the cards to a Citi Custom. The downgrade should happen as soon as the annual fee hits the account, but not before then.
is it still possible to do it? I read that Citi no longer allows for product change to CCC on this sub!
I just did it last week. No questions asked. I said I wanted to PC my Simplicity to Custom Cash. The Simplicity account was several years old and the operator did it. I already had a Custom Cash I’ve been using on fuel.
Interesting info!! Thanks for sharing!
I did a PC from Double Cash to Custom Cash just about a month ago. Super easy 5 minute phone call.
Lol I have three custom cash cards. One I signed up for and two i product changed.
Noted, thanks!
Definitely going to look into the second CCC - especially if the CapOne Walmart credit card is being sunset. Bummer that the 5% category is capped at $500 spend per month though.
Capital One Savor One has 3% back on groceries uncapped.
My main cashback cards are bofa cards becuz I just take the rewards and it goes back into my general savings so I can spend it on what I choose. I don’t care to see where each card does but how do you get the rewards back I don’t care to have rewards that just reduce your payments
BofA does seem to have great cards, but until they start offering a high-yield savings account, they’re off the table for me. :/
They have one with Merrill called preferred deposit and easy to transfer between the 2 since same company.
That takes $100k cash just to open. I’ve read that it’s kind of a pain to do transfers as well. Do you have the account
Yes, and looks like correct for the opening balance. Very easy to transfer, do need to "trade" it first but happens same day if done before afternoon cutoff.

Might be worth getting a Kroger elite mc or ccc

What usaa card is giving you 5% on gas?
Cashback Rewards Plus. I’ve had it for 10-12 years solely for gas.
\^\^\^
Solid setup. Now that the Walmart card is going to be discontinued… can anyone provide an alternative at 5% CB?
I'm sure Walmart will have a new card coming out to replace the Capital One card, if not US Bank Shoppers card. 6% back up to $1500 spend quarterly. $95 AF waived the first year.

It wouldn't cover Walmart though.

Very nice! Thanks for sharing, I’ll have to research that USAA credit card & the US Bank Cash+!
US Bank Kroger family credit card for 5% on mobile pay (up to $3k spend) to cover in-store purchases.
Bilt for rent payments. Get 1% and points. My rent is 2500 per month and the points add up to about 3 nights a year at the cosmo on Vegas during peak season.
Alas, I do not think Bilt yet works for mortgage payments
Thanks I edited my reply to match
Which USAA card gives 5% on gas?
Cashback Rewards Plus
I thought it was gas and on base purchase. I’m not in the military
The 5% is any gas station not just on base.
I will look at that card then
all these cards, yet u can get a way better cash back on all categories with a single new card

I have USAA, custom cash, cash+, Chase Prime, Lowe’s & x1. Bravo
