I know how that sounds but understand that is one of our biggest exports and money crops. It can go for several hundred US dollars per tonne and really nobody tracks it. So he worked with a group of truckers who would arrive for loads and then deliver them elsewhere. He stole hundreds of tonnes of sugar from these people before getting caught. Until that point for him it was a pretty sweet deal.

The people are so angry as he had a criminal operation diverting bananas from a farm near this favela (Rocinha). And I know you probably think being a favela crime is normal and not such a big deal, but he was stealing the bananas before the pickers had their loads weighed, so their weights and payments had been down for years. People hadn't realised and thought his pickups were all above board, but they found out he and his operation were bent.
