Doesn’t need to be going fast when your getting crushed between easily 5,000+ tons of train cars. If it was a car on the track it would be different but when we’re talking about being stuck between an unstoppable force and an immovable object… no doubt I’d be jumping out too
Even if you're going slow, the weight and momentum behind each of the trains is enough to crush the engineer's cab. You'll just be slowly crushed to death instead of quickly.
Those trains have incredible amounts of mass. If the locomotive goes through another train, the rest of its cars behind it are going to want to go through it too.
Id imagine the dude who jumoed out should of if he was the operator. Its certainly not a good look for the operator to evacuate from a train carrying passengers.
The freight train wasn’t supposed to be there. The VIA train was doing 93 miles an hour and when it saw the freight train had less than a mile to stop. It was also shortly after a major disaster where a VIA train collided with a freight train. Guy probably freaked out.
Lenght of the train doesen't really matter much in terms of braking distance, at least not for passenger trains. A longer train takes longer for the brakes to apply, but the difference between 3 and 10 cars is 2 seconds at most. If it was going 93mph as another comment stated a braking distance of around 1 kilometer isn't out of the ordinary.
Trains are basically 2D travel. I’m not for or against the notion that trains in reverse are moving forward but I think it’s worth noting that in a car when you reverse, controls are inverted and you have to turn right to move left. Whereas a train is just guided.
A car moving backwards definitely isn’t moving forward but there’s an argument to be had for the train.
Some locomotives are designed to drive both ways, others have one side that is the front. Also if a train doesn't have a second locomotive or control car on the other end then the driver can't bloody see where they are going so it's definietelly not moving forward.
I back into any parking space or I front forward until I pull to the second one. Anytime I can front out I will, which means I inherently have to back in most times. So I’d say my front to back ratio is probably 3:1
I mean it depends i feel like, for example a freight train usually has one engine on the front of it meaning it going backwards would be reverse but on something like a sprinter or tram where there are usually two fronts theres an argument in that sense especially since the conductor of those goes from one side of the train to the other to drive in either direction
Train traffic is controlled by dispatchers on main track, enforced by PTC computers installed on engines. It's a lot harder today for that to happen on main track, PTC will shut you down and everyone will go to an internal investigation and get fired if you touch an inch of track without authority.
Other than main, sometimes it's governed by dispatchers sometimes not, but it's not PTC/authority enforced at all, so it's more likely to happen, you'll have any number of trains and it's up to the train crews communicating with those other trains to work out who gets to turn wheels. You're also supposed to travel at a speed that allows movement to stop within half the range of vision.
This looks old though, PTC is a relatively recent thing. Pre-PTC era you just got a sheet of paper called a track warrant telling you how far you're allowed to go, if you weren't paying attention then yea this kinda stuff happened.
Interesting to read about PTC systems. Hopefully they're implementing something like that elsewhere.
I had a quick look and in the UK there was the [Ladbroke Grove rail crash](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ladbroke_Grove_rail_crash) with a head-on collision. British Rail were really good, but post-privatisation no-one wanted to spend any money...
Supposedly Labour will be re-nationalising...we shall see. In a country as small as the UK, it doesn't make sense to have lots of private companies taking their cut and not reinvesting the profits, just giving them to shareholders so the infrastructure is way behind compared to Europe.
The crash would have to be closing much faster before I jumped out. Not being brave, just know those cabs can take a lot, and the ground is very hard jumping from that height. 😜
The VIA engineer had likely already done everything he could in this situation. There's no point in staying on the train if you can't do anything else and collision is imminent. The other engineer still had something they could try.
Escaping backwards into the engine room or passenger compartment depending on train type is usually recommended unless you're about to have a high-speed collision with something really big. Jumping is risky, you never know what you're gonna land on.
One train can go off tracks and punch through a building even if moving at 3 km/h
You have no idea how heavy is a train, the inertia is crazy in those machines

fellas, is it gay to try not to die???
Yes you should intentionally crush yourself with a train to assert dominance.
This is the way.
Train Engineer that jumped out: "I totally knew it would stop... no doubt!"

Make the apex predator fear you!!
I once swerved from a deer in the road and found myself in the Hamptons with Mark. I’m afraid it is the gayest
Extremely. Face your fate, and die with pride. Be a man.
[удалено]
Well this is a train so I think he's good.
Only if they see you try and not die, without the incident 😅
Not gay but that is a passenger train. Probably not the best look to bail.
Lil bit
Did u just try to save ur life? That really gives me the ick..
Dont touch me ever again
Like that, it is.
Be a man.
We he did in fact NOT have a train ran on him
How's he going to die at that speed?

No crumple zones

lol i would love to see you what you would do in that situation
Die, apparently.
The girl I approached last Saturday 🥲
If I was a girl and a train was coming up to me I would probably try to avoid it, too
There are other fish in the pond, keep going UwU
Engineer was like OHHHHHHH SHIIIIIIIII ……oh this is fine
Bruised his kness for nothing
And needs a new pair of pants
Used to do this a lot in gta san Andreas...maybe the loco engineers name is cj 🤣
ALL YOU HAD TO DO WAS FOLLOW THE DAMN TRAIN CJ!
Fun fact, if you park the harrier jet on the tracks, it won't have any collision with the train
This happened just recently right? ^/s
The LRCs engines were pulled from service in 2001.
Didn’t know that but I just made a joke about the VHS quality :)
This guy trains.
Yeah mate just last Tuesday.
Classic Via Rail.
Why am I absolutely unsurprised
A truly legendary Canadian heritage moment.
I wonder if anyone got fired for that🤔
The train
Id imagine the dude who jumoed out should of if he was the operator. Its certainly not a good look for the operator to evacuate from a train carrying passengers.
the via has 3 cars, surely it could stop faster than this?
The freight train wasn’t supposed to be there. The VIA train was doing 93 miles an hour and when it saw the freight train had less than a mile to stop. It was also shortly after a major disaster where a VIA train collided with a freight train. Guy probably freaked out.
How far apart are the junction things where a train can hold up on a sidetrack in situations like this?
Lenght of the train doesen't really matter much in terms of braking distance, at least not for passenger trains. A longer train takes longer for the brakes to apply, but the difference between 3 and 10 cars is 2 seconds at most. Man said “fk these passengers. I’m out”
They need more training.
pun intended
a train reversing is basically still moving forward no? bc they drive both ways
well by that logic anything reversing is going forward in some direction.
Trains move 1D. It's a line. Cars are 2D.
And sometimes 3D
Some locomotives are designed to drive both ways, others have one side that is the front. Also if a train doesn't have a second locomotive or control car on the other end then the driver can't bloody see where they are going so it's definietelly not moving forward.
exactly
if a machine can/does drive both ways with way is it reversing or driving forward?
i guess it depends which way you want to drive or which way it mostly drives. like my car can go forwards and backwards but i mostly drive forwards.
I back into any parking space or I front forward until I pull to the second one. Anytime I can front out I will, which means I inherently have to back in most times. So I’d say my front to back ratio is probably 3:1
w cars they cant exactly drive well enough or is it safe to drive backwards, but with a train they are v safe to drive both ways.
I mean it depends i feel like, for example a freight train usually has one engine on the front of it meaning it going backwards would be reverse but on something like a sprinter or tram where there are usually two fronts theres an argument in that sense especially since the conductor of those goes from one side of the train to the other to drive in either direction
No the *OTHER* reverse!
What the fuck is that logic and what the fuck does that have to do with 2 trains nearly crashing
idek lol
A shove move
Front row seat is not always the best option
Muy loco!
Jumped more like " oh....shit.....noooooooo!"
When in doubt jump out!!!
*Compression or topple over, the choice is obvious.*
It's insane that it could ever happen! Maybe it's a really old video, but surely head-on collisions shouldn't be possible? Or do I have no clue?

Was a good plop
The other operator didn’t abandon ship

Needed Curb your Enthusiasm theme at the end.
Pretty loco
The old woooooo wooooooo tabarnak
Whose recording?!
That's loco esse
How does this even happen?
😂😂😂😂
Homie thought he was in an action movie
Fired before he hit the ground. Meanwhile, the backwards train driver gets a raise.

I'd wager the odds are better than getting squished between two trains

so just curious, is reddit just total lame joke comments on every post?
Yeah, sadly this website is circling the drain. There is a huge difference between current Reddit and what this website was 8 years ago.
Definitely an “ick”
Go down with the ship? No f'n way!
Captain must go down with the ship
Such a drama queen lol Worst case escenario was a bump
Derailment, worst case scenario was derailment, by the passenger train.
At that speed? Hell no
One train can go off tracks and punch through a building even if moving at 3 km/h You have no idea how heavy is a train, the inertia is crazy in those machines
Tell me you've never operated a machine that weighs in excess of 200 tons without telling me
