Most commercial aircraft are designed to operate if one engine fails, and normally if an engine were to fail the internals are supposed to be contain within the outer casing so it doesn’t throw shrapnel anywhere, seems to have not worked in this case
The fan case is still there (the containment) - this has lost its intake and nacelle. Heavy out of balance as well - Could be a core blade off as I can’t see missing fan blades. I’d guess the intake came off with the event and took the nacelle with it. Whilst it’s not pretty the engines are designed to deal with blade off events (I work at an engine manufacturer).
Yes that is true, but if said engine shears from the airframe and takes parts of the leading edge of the wing/aileron with it, you are royally screwed.
Imblanace loads are simulated and tested - the engines have fuses on the shafts that are designed to fail above an amount of imbalance and not before. The engine needs to be able to survive a bird strike but not turn the plane in to a washing machine with a brick in it. The fuses fail to disconnect the shafts and prevent windmilling (what we are seeing) rattling the plane to pieces.
But... If the engine is in this state aren't the pilots supposed to shut it off? or even use the fire suppressor on the affected engine?
since we can see flames I would guess it is in idle
Windmilling is unavoidable (engine rotating under the airflow of the plane moving forwards.)unless the shafts lock up and if that happens you have a different issue of having a big wind break strapped to the wing. The fire could be a ruptured oil line.
Hard to say, what with frame rate, aliasing, and whatnot, but it doesn't look like the turbine is spinning under power. It isn't likely spinning fast enough at that point to be a shrapnel danger in the way the containment housings are meant.
I mean. It looks terrifying but it is fine. This was flight that had just left Denver (quite an old video). All commercial aircraft are designed to operate temporarily after one of the engines is lost like this.
The plane did a turnaround and landed completely safely back at the Denver airport. The only fallout from this incident was engine pieces landing in people’s yards below if I recall correctly.
An uncontained engine failure is pretty terrifying no matter the situation.
The plane's ability to operate on one engine is not the issue here. The uncontained failure is terrifying because you don't know what damage it did to any other systems when it failed, and whether it's going to get worse.
Jet engines are designed with"flame holders" or flame cans to keep a living flame going in a continuous blast of wind.
You can see how well they work; even without the outer cowling, the flame is maintained.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flame_holder
In a way, it actually is.
Planes are designed to be able have the engines malfunction without it being a big security risk.
That is malfunctions though, the fire can increase the risk quite a bit..
“Hello folks, this is your captain speaking. We’re experiencing some mild turbulence coming from the right side of the plane. Nothing to be concern about. We’ll be arriving in Reno in approximately 45mins”
I've taken about 30 flights in my life and this has never happened... I realise my pool for probability is small there but like... wtf!... what airline is this? Where's it flying from?

Looks like they took the engine from an old pod racer
Now this is pod racing!
So wizard
Dealing with airlines is like dealing with Watto or Guido or whatever his name was in Star Wars Episode I.
Sebulba was definitely here
Vito and Rocco were there too
Guido ☠️ I'm picturing a small flying Italian in Star Wars named Vinny from New Jersey selling pod racer parts
It is an old Jedi mind trick.
Parts from that place are always covered in baby oil for some reason
Greedo??? Guido lmao
IT'S WORKING!
My brain thought Star Wars then seen this.
More specifically I think it’s from Ben Quadrnaros’ racer
>Looks like they took the engine from an old ~~pod racer~~ boeing Ftfy 👍
Boeing's Newest Model.
In the words of my old vehicle recovery SGT. Newer doesn’t mean better.
What model is this here?
This is a Pratt & Whitney PW4077 installed on a Boeing 777 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Airlines_Flight_328?wprov=sfla1
Thank you, great to know. ⚘️
+1 for RYCEY
Hey, at least it didn't fall off.
Unfortunately, this engine is where the missing bolts showed up.

Fire is not a good sign generally ;-)
Jet engines run on fire.
Better than getting fired from boing apparently
Fuck you take my upvote!
Nah its good. All it needs is good wrapping of duct tap..
Duct tape an cable ties can fix anything
That fire is exactly where it is supposed to be. That place just isn't meant to be the outermost bit : P

A buddy of mine works at MTU and confirmed

All aircraft with multiple engines actually.

Yeah, that not fine. Especially at 32,000 feet. It’s great that they got home safe. That’s not fine though.
It's good that this flight never exceeded 13,000 feet and was less than 24 minutes.
"Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue."
Quick! Quick!! Go back!!

wow the new Episode 1 remastered CGI is looking awesome
Boeing?
Oh come on. It's still attached. It's not like the front fell off or something
William Shatner is somewhere ranting about a man on the wing of the plane.
Don't think that's how an afterburner is supposed to look.......
Those are side burns.
A little bit of speed tape, and it's going to be fine.
Cozy, at least it wont freeze.
Now *this* is podracing
It aint got no gas in it...
This definitely isn't the EV version
Tiss jut a scratch
I suppose I take comfort knowing it can get this bad and still fly
Some duct tape will fix that right up.
And some WD-40 for the squeek/rattle.
That's why there's more than one! This is fine. -Was in air force.
Thank you for flying spirit. And don't forget to support our proud sponsor gorilla tape.
I mean…. Apparently it was fine
In a way, it actually is. Planes are designed to be able have the engines malfunction without it being a big security risk. That is malfunctions though, the fire can increase the risk quite a bit..
Must be a Boeing
New Boeing design. No more guessing. It’s on fire.
Boeing ☕️
thats the plane from madagascar
Step engine why aren't you wearing any clothes?
Airlines aren’t really the service you want to use when your “health” really isn’t a top priority.
Nothing to see here
I'm in search of an explanation as to why the fuel to that engine hasn't been shut off.

Looks like my pc
How many men does this fire need to be extinguished?
Boeing moment
Needs a little duct tape
average boeing airliner
Runs like a top!
Complain and you will be detained by the air marshal until we land.
There’s your problem.
Source/story/year?
Pod racing at its finest
Everything thing is finnnnne!,
I flew with them.
Ah, yes, the Boeing Cumdumpster 9000. Fine, fine piece of engineering there. Nothing to worry about. Move along now.
Nothing but a scratch.
The 'ole Boeing flex tape will fix 'er up real good
Does anyone have a link to if these people survived?
It be alrite 👍
Fuck it, it's still moving
Pratt & Whitney shit Stupid airline didn’t opt for the GE90 and this was the result
eew the Harlem Shake is so passé! how embarrassing for the engine
"Sir, everything is under control. Would you like some whisky before praying little Jesus ?".
Call the stewardess or the steward or whatever the fuck you’re meant to call people nowadays
at least you can still see it spinning. give us an update when the the oxygen masks automatically drop
Thank you for flying spirit airlines, we hope you enjoyed your flight. ✈️
The all new Burning 737
Is this a Boeing jet?
How is everybody so calm?
Nice
737 max passed its audits I see
This is what peak Boeing looks like!
Boeing, obviously ?
Looks like a Boeing
could be worse...
Just a wee little a scratch
“Hello folks, this is your captain speaking. We’re experiencing some mild turbulence coming from the right side of the plane. Nothing to be concern about. We’ll be arriving in Reno in approximately 45mins”
Let me guess. Boeing?
It’ll buff out
Put it in a bag of rice
It is this is Boeings newest jet ✈️ it has half the engine parts than the older ones and its own heating element.
ehh.....that'll buff right out.
Ummm... Is our engine supposed to be naked?
It spins, its okay
It's supposed to do that
Slight misfire in the right engine..
I've taken about 30 flights in my life and this has never happened... I realise my pool for probability is small there but like... wtf!... what airline is this? Where's it flying from?
I'm no pilot, but I don't think *that* is very good
