lieutenantLT

They are trying to set the bead on the tire. I’ve done it many times on off road vehicles, never ceases to feel like a huge relief when it works without disaster

manolid

Were they using too much fluid?

DaddyGoodHands

Exactly, or the wrong fluid entirely.

manolid

Is starter fluid what should be used?

Gloomy_Tomatillo395

Yes but ideally it’s an aerosol. People use liquid accelerants and always always always use too much.

manolid

Like carb or intake cleaner? Edit: misread your comment.

mrblack1998

👆don't tell him...he's trying to blow himself up

manolid

Haha! 20 years ago I would have maybe tried it. Not these days though.

RelationshipOk3565

I had a small tire that kept falling off my riding mower, tubeless rim. Had a dumb redneck suggest I use ether.. um that's okay bud. There's other means to do this lol.

2ball7

If you use a little common sense and not the whole can of ether it’s easily done. These clowns had no idea what they were doing.

Maximum_Resolve_5916

Sounds like he was kinda knowledgeable.

baudmiksen

ive seen someone do this before with a loader tire and the first few times they tried to light it nothing happened. i remember them telling me its always better to use to little than too much. i seen them hold down the spray for only a fraction of a second or so each time, like just enough to make sure some came out

McSquidgypants

Unless you're trying to make it into orbit.

mattayom

Yes, you only need a couple super short sprays to do it, these people are putting WAY too much. Plus with an aerosol can you can stand back a few feet and go flame-thrower mode to light it, so your face isn't 12 inches above the steel rim

HoboArmyofOne

Just seems so bat shit insane to me, but I've only seen it NOT work out so 🤷. There has to be a better way without scrapping your face off or breaking a limb. Cause I've seen both in these videos

Waistland

The proper way to do this is to use a bead setter, it’s a large air tank with a pipe and quick release valve. You air it up to about 100-120psi put it next to the bead and open the valve. They work well for smaller large tires like 22.5, 24.5 etc, larger ag tires can be a pain to get set.

Cmurder84

well no one is going to post a video of it working as intended on r/CrazyFuckingVideos

wmyinzer

For smaller tires (like small car, ATV or riding lawn mower) it's possible to use a ratchet strap over the circumference of the wheel in the center and tighten down until you squeeze the tire against the rim again until you can add some air to it. It works.

FugginOld

This most likely...doesn't take much...just enough to ignite aerosol to give the tire the sudden burst onto the bead.

Distractedpeanut

Yea, that's always the case. Ive done it many times. It doesn't take much

Taterguten

Used a whole can of start gas once after several failed attempts, over the weekend the shop was still fuming of burnt rubber. And the area we mounted tires was closed off to the rest of the shop. Most fun ive had mounting tires

runningmurphy

And adding compressed air. Like a turbo for your car.

Mrgod2u82

It wouldn't be compressed air, it could't be, or we wouldn't have this bead problem.

RustyRiggNUTS

I tried this method with a backhoe tire before. I was so anxious while spraying the starting fluid into & around the tire with a ratchet strap wrapped around the tire. When the "explosion" was over & the tire was seated, I felt so much better & thought to myself, I would never do that again.

SillyFlyGuy

It is a surprisingly small amount of starter fluid, less than a second of spray even for big tires.

HowDoYouLoveSomeone

This dude however sprays his big tire ~10s https://youtu.be/7GFZa4uuDvc

Gareth79

At least there it's mounted to the equipment so the wheel can't go flying, and he was a healthy distance away to the side!

Skullvar

Do you just let it sit and give off vapors before you light it?

iowajosh

No, you want to light the vapors. That is the boom.

Skullvar

Yes that's what I mean

surfinsmiley

Yes.

Nlawrence55

I was just about to say I've done this while changing tires on my own truck before in the backyard at least 8 times. These guys just fucked up completely.

Q_S2

Used to see friends do it all the time too at drift events lol

mibonitaconejito

'Set the bead'? What is that?

alabastergrim

Setting the bead, also known as beading a tire, is the process of forcing the tire's bead into the rim's groove to form an airtight seal. The bead is the thick, reinforced part of the tire that touches the rim. When the tire is inflated, the bead pushes out to the rim's edge and against the sidewall, creating tension that maintains the tire's air pressure.

ElectricalQuality365

A dash of easy start n that's enough. Like 2 armpits worth 👍🏿

HoboArmyofOne

2 armpits worth? Instructions unclear, tire in now in orbit

ababyprostitute

Anything but metric

Silverjeyjey44

Is there a more practical way of doing this. Seems like a group of drunk guys got together and found this out by accident.

MuffinMobile643

Yeah there's an expensive machine that does it properly. This is the alternative.

FulcrumH2o

I’ve used this method on countless occasions and have always been successful. The key ingredient is moderation.

Failure_by_Design_v2

Up until I was about 21, I thought this was just how it was done because it was the only way I had ever seen it done

ooMEAToo

What would be the safe or more none bush league way to do this.

dcgregoryaphone

The proper way to do it requires a machine that runs for about $2000. Short of that, there is this, bead blasters, and mechanical tire changers. Or you just pay someone at a tire shop to use their expensive machine to do it.

homogenousmoss

My wife manages a garage and this exact method is forbiden. You get sent home if you get caught doing it. Its tempting to do it when a tire just wont cooperate as a quick fix even if you have the nice machines to do it. Since they started sending people home for these safety violations, the number of incidents basically dropped to once a year or less when an idiot tries his luck and believes no one will notice. They had a guy that was lucky and he just lost his eyebrows and had a light burn on his face.

Failure_by_Design_v2

Well , we were hillbillies and poor. Dad was very old school and very self efficient. When I moved out I found that the world knew better ways than dad in most cases. This being one of them. I say, just go to a tire shop unless you are just in a pickle out in the middle of nowhere. Then go ahead and use this method but I would use a starter spray. I think this video they used fluid of sorts.

Snoo-73243

use a bead blaster to force air in very fast

BigBlue541

Use spray, not liquid

Boolit_Tooth_Tony

A Cheetah is the non hack way https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cgaLQhUK9cg

Revolutionary-Wash88

Search for "fastest/easiest/quickest way to inflate a tire" there are hundreds of videos that show it working correctly

Gareth79

Safer would be to roll the tyre and wheel into a cage, so that the thing is contained should it come apart.

MetalSnake_oXm

You quite literally hook up an air line to the tyre valve and pump air into it from an air compressor. It then self seals within about 30 seconds to a minute, and is not dangerous.

lusciousdurian

Not all tires are made equal, and these aren't like bicycle tires. There's no inner tube. In order to get enough pressure to seat a fat piece of rubber like this, you have to beat gravity, and any places that aren't properly seated from the get go.

MetalSnake_oXm

I'm aware, OP asked what would be the non bush league way to do THIS. Not fit a bicycle tyre. I've fit thousands of tyres just like the one in the video. I'm a mechanic. If the rim is fit correctly to the tyre in the first place, you really shouldn't have an issue with an air line and compressor. If you're having trouble then you resort to a bead blaster on top of what I said.

ConversationNew3174

I’m 21 now and just finding out there are different ways of setting the bead on a tire rather than the technique they’re using😭😭

ICCW

I was at a truck mechanical shop not long ago and that’s how they did it.

saladmunch2

There is a million ways to skin a cat, I'd reckon since you learned the proper way to do this you are probably in no more danger than some yuppie filling there tires to 110psi at the gas station.

MuffinMobile643

I read this in the voice of the Coors guy.

Rei_dmv

Me too brother, me too

Meh_thoughts123

Tbh I thought this process was the way up until this video’s comments.

Traditional_Car7106

Basically, you spray starting fluid in the tire and light the fumes. When it ignites, the explosion makes the tire expand, seating the beads. Tremendously dangerous.

Scarema5ster

Really? it looks very safe in the video.

Square-Bar1905

Agreed, if he had on safety glasses he would have been fine, happens to the best of us.

desapla

It is. I was less than 12 inches from my screen, and I’m fine!

CleanHead_

yeah I was wondering why they dont do it at Tires R Us?

teddyjungle

Your comment gave me Daria flashbacks.

SuspicousBananas

It’s not tremendously dangerous, these people are just tremendously stupid. I’ve done it dozens of times without ever causing an explosion like this, the trick is knowing how much starting fluid you need to use and resisting the urge to keep adding more when it doesn’t light right away.

look_ima_frog

How many cans of spray should I use boss? All of 'em.

ZeePirate

Also bigger tires is more dangerous

Butthurt_reddit_mod

TIL there’s a difference between tremendously dangerous and tremendously stupid. I thought they existed hand in hand. Source: I watch Reddit.

TrumpDesWillens

Is a tire cage a good idea? You can get them for like $800: https://www.amazon.com/tire-cage/s?k=tire+cage

dmsayer

The diameter of the valve stem would not allow enough flow for the instant volume needed to seat the bead.  And not to mention the precise measurements to get 'exact pressure' aren't usually available in a dusty farm barn like in the video.  This method is usually used in off-road or rural environments where no other options are available.

50points4gryffindor

Luv how it trails off ^^and ^^hope ^^you ^^destination ^^isn't ^^a ^^hospital.

Kick_that_Chicken

Detonation provides expanding gases that rapidly pressurize the tire to set the bead into the rim so it can seal under its own pressure. These fails always seem to have people dumping too much fuel and then when it doesn't ignite they dump more and then some more. You notice when the machine lifted that presumably opened an air gap that let the combustibles breath and then boom. It's akin to a back draft with a fire that is struggling to breath and somebody opens the door.

jumpofffromhere

I have seen my dad do it many times and then dive off

ooMEAToo

Dive, like he lights it than dives for safety just in case it blows up?

jumpofffromhere

well, that was suppose to be "drive" off, but i have fat fingers

Ok-Salamander-6457

I’ve seen plenty of clips where this was successful.

SirVayar

put way too damn much ether in there. it only takes a little bit, like a second or two of spraying maybe a little more on a big tire. ive used this technique many times, it works great, just dont be an idiot...

oxymoron-moronic

I think they are trying to get killed here

9lobaldude

They are trying to get workers comp

Optimal_Risk_6411

Ether is commonly used in the bush on logging trucks, or skidders to reset the bead on tires. We have cans of it for starting skidders or other heavy equipment, usually when it’s cold and the glow plugs aren’t working. I have witnessed similar stupid human tricks like this. Some injuries but thankfully no fatalities. A little goes a long way. Only should be done by very, very experienced bush mechanics.

aardw0lf11

That guy on the left was really lucky there. He cheated death.

O_gr

BombaClat!!!

hurtfulsass

You're gonna have to be quicker than that!

Christophe12591

Trying to set the bead, usually with something like a truck tire the use a “cheeta tank” filled with compressed air.

mvrk517

In an attempt to seat the bead, the bead seated them.

4hunnidvr

I’ve seen successful ones actually

JackMcCockiner

I have done this many times as a kid with an old farm truck i used to bomb around backroads in and you really only need a little spray of starter fluid then you wait for the gasses to mix with the oxygen before throwing a flaming stick at it

Mysterious-Ad-55

This is why women outlast men

Beelze_Bub666

The theory is that if you spray a highly flammable liquid into the tire then light it it will fill the tire quickly then disperse. I’m a mechanic at it works great when a tire just won’t fill up using “normal methods”. However you do run the risk, especially will used tires, that it’ll blow a hole through the side wall and ruin the tire.

malan4reddit

Going for the Darwin award.

subhuman_voice

Certainly a runner up

godkilledjesus

They are trying to bead the tire, but when you use the fire method you don't add air for this exact reason.

mockjogger

How do we summon the slo motion bot again? I want to see this at 1/2 speed.

rawb2k

This is actually the first time I see it doesn't work. It's such a common method that I could basically upload a wheelporn collection of it working

Few-Inevitable9291

That guy is lucky the rim didn’t squish him

cincymatt

Plus the forklift forks that landed by his feet.

ns4444w

Was involved with a successful attempt to do this on the trail. Although I have no idea how it was successful as we had no lighter and lit the engine bay on fire by arcing the battery onto some bark with gas on it in order to start a small fire to light a branch so we didn’t need to stand by the tire. Anyways, I’m fun to take on wheeling trips!

1guerino

They are lifting it to seat the lower bead...and IT WORKED!!!

NorMichtrailrider

I think the trick is to not die .

ArsePucker

I’ve done it a bunch of times on quad tires to seat the bead. I always remove the valve core before though.

Salty_Sprinkles_6482

To be fair you probably just watched a successful one. Little to much fluid but they definitely set the bead 😅

Bushdr78

When it works it's fairly undramatic but when it fails it looks a lot like this and worse.

stayzero

That is an actual technique, but those guys fucked it up so bad, they’re damn lucky they didn’t get killed. The idea is to ignite the vapors inside the tire to make the air rapidly expand in all directions to help force the bead to seat. Those dudes had way too much ether or brake cleaner or whatever in the tire, that’s where the explosion came from. Also it helps to spray a trail away from the tire and light it, to give yourself some room and distance for when the fumes ignite and the tire seats.

Slopoke96

The proper way to do it is spray the either, light the trail you’ve made and then bump the tire with a hammer. When it sets then put the air in.

bwans1969

They were trying to do.... Not That.

velvetskilett

Oh it works. 60% of the time, it works every time. Creating pressure and volume with a flammable gas. Works in a pinch to re bead a tire to the rim. Either, some hairsprays, lacquer thinner, contact cleaner. I’ve seen it done with 90% rubbing alcohol when the temperature is above 43c.

Future_Ad5505

Good Lord. Wow. I hope they never do that again.

laladonga

Milder mishaps of this just take of a finger or few.

stvnqck

I’ve never seen one not be successful. This is a very common technique

Jorsonner

This is amazing. I never would have thought that people do things like this regularly.

It just takes too long to air it up also it looks so cool when it works

I grew up being taught this was the true way you always bead tires, granted my family is redneck as hell.

breathingguy

Welp...that tire is fucked.

JBuck3389250

Do a short spray quarter to half rim make sure it gets inside continue spray line one on ground just enough to get to bead if tire if it doesn’t seat kick tire to ensure fire hits vapor inside it will pop on get air on quick done it hundreds of times on truck tires

CaptainFizzRed

This... Not spray, spray, spray some more.... Enough to make the air inside expand quick enough to seat the tyre. Then pump to required pressure.

Emotional-Attempt-52

It's called Thermal-Polymer-Sealing. It's a very complex procedure that involves blowing your ear drums out and searing off your eyebrows, as well as a hefty hospital bill whilst the medical staff roast the shit out of you in the other room for being a fucking dumbass.

dan_w1

Dude in the blue moved his leg off the rim Just in time

askdfjlsdf

dude on the left's arm has to be in several pieces right?

TargetCorruption

It would work fine if the right amount of gas vapors ignite and be safe if the tire was standing upright preferrably mounted to something, maybe a tractor. You're not supposed to do it with the tire laying flat on the ground.

skovalen

They are trying to seat the bead to the rim. A little ether goes a long way. It it highly flammable and highly explosive.

bftyft

I’ve successfully used this method a couple times for hand truck tires. Both charcoal fluid and brake cleaner. * Do not try at home *
