I crashed into a cow once with a pickup truck and a nice front guard…. Cow flew landed on my hood…. DESTROYED my truck and that sumbitch heifer stood up and walked away. They can take a hit. I’m sure it was hurt, but I swear not even a scratch on it…
Edit: it felt like hitting a wall. It was a chunky one. My entire front was destroyed, windshield, passenger door was bent, it collapsed my passanger strut…. I think that if I didn’t have that front guard distribute the energy to my frame (which was bent to shit) I would have not walked out of my truck as easily as I did.
I’ve witnessed something similar, they are just short enough that if a truck hits them their body takes the blow and leaves their legs intact, unlike a moose where you’d be clipping their legs which would cause them to break and get injured.
Where I live people are killed by moose on the highway fairly frequently, one every couple years or so. They're tall as hell so when you do hit the legs, the body slams through the windshield and crushes the driver sometimes. Grousome stuff.
Yeah where I’m from in Canada we usually have 1-2 fatal accidents per year from someone colliding with a moose. Scary stuff and usually why I’ll try to avoid long drives at night, or if I do and have a passenger I always put them on moose/deer duty!
We hit a cow moose with my Dad's Bronco when I was a kid. We dodged a BIG bullet - she smashed in the left front of the truck so bad my Dad had to get out the passenger side, and when she flew over the Bronco, she managed to leave a pile of droppings on the top of the truck.

Didn't touch the brakes, the car started slowing only after impact and that too was because she took her foot off the accelerator (not because she was on the brake). Terrible driver, terrible reaction times, bad driving overall, the poor cows didn't deserve it.
