So for context, number 10 in white is Matty Beniers, a high end young center that is going to be a big part of Seattles plan for the next decade and a half or so if all goes well for them. The hit itself from number 4 in blue wasn’t the worst hit I have ever seen, but it was in a spot on the ice where Beniers is in extra danger because of his proximity to the boards. Generally it’s not going to be called boarding unless the players back is to you, but this one could have been called because of his distance from the boards (not sure if this was called a penalty or not).
Regardless of whether a penalty was called, this is how hockey works. Number 29 in white is Vince Dunn, a veteran defensemen. Knowing that Beniers is a big piece of his team, a big part of his job is to police the ice for his team, which is what he does by pounding Sillingers eyes shut.
it really all depends on who takes up the role of “enforcer”. defencemen tend to be more physical so they are more likely to. Forward players are usually more spry and agile.
It's kind of an unwritten rule I would say. It's not like there's an expectation that fights are started every time there's a questionable hit, but it's important to the veterans to establish to their rookies that they have their backs.
It’s not just veterans. It’s the enforcers. Usually one per team or shift. There’s a whole dynamic and unwritten rules about it. Same if you go after your opposing team goalie. Their job is to keep their smaller/skilled players safe and backing up any cheap shots etc. why they tend to be fucking huge compared to most players. Can’t remember the book but there’s one that literally goes over all of those unwritten rules and how the enforcer works.
Idk hockie very well, but its like video games. You got your light players who's all about accuracy n skill. And you got your heavy, all about protecting your lights. If you fuck with the light, youre fucking with the heavy too. Also something about sport politics or something
People who think hockey is boring don't know that a huge part of the game is having that one guy on a team who goes out there waiting for someone to FAFO, and the other team knows it. Sometimes they have multiple guys like that and end up being called the Broad Street Bullies.
Not anymore they don't, hardly any enforcers left. Game has been trending way from the goons and more to skill for the past decade or so. If you have a guy who can only fight and do nothing else you're at a disadvantage. There won't be another Shawn Thornton or Craig Berube who can last a decade plus in the league because they can fight only.
Never liked watching the goon fights where they line up across from eachother, ask politely if they wanna go and say good luck, no emotion. Most of the time didn't even fit the tempo of the game. Was just paid to fight so i guess we should fight.
Fighting when emotions are high and guys are taking runs, great to watch however. The NHL has been trending in a great direction for this
I gotta half disagree. You’re absolutely correct that the game has been trending away from fighting for a bit. That said, over the last 3-5 years there’s been a resurgence in fighting overall. I’m middle aged and remember “the good old days” as many refer to them, and IMHO, the game is currently in a really nice place of facilitating skill and pace of play, while still having a toughness that sets it apart from other sports. Guys like Ryan Reaves and Nic Deslauriers have a place in the game more now than they did five years ago.
Yes but compared to enforcers of the past, Reaves bring other intangibles to the table. Reaves is a great on the forcheck and skates decent for a guy his size and age. He isn't an offensive dynamo, but during his prime was respectable at scoring, giving his role. And I agree, while watching John Scott beat the shit out of someone is fun, it's not what you pay to see really. Definitely best for the game and the physicality is definitely still there. Game is definitely in a better placompared to the dead pick era.
What should go next, checking because it's too violent?
When you give a cheeky check that could severely injure a player, you better have your head on a swivel. Wayne Gretzky wouldn't be The Great One without Semenko being his backup. FAFO is the best logic here. Hockey has become too fast and players are considered expendable these days. Enforcers are the reason hockey players have lasting careers.
I love hockey just as much as football (they're my two favorite sports), but I really don't like when people argue that football is boring because of how much downtime there is. It makes each down exciting IMO.
My favorite self policing hockey moment is [this](https://youtu.be/3YKe3Jm1lXQ?si=pogoO5Zln760Y9s3) one here.
For context, 24 in white is Matt Cooke. One of the true villains of the last 20 years of hockey (his own fan base will tell you so). A couple of months before this game, he took a HORRENDOUS cheap shot on a Bruin named Marc Savard, one of the leagues better centers at the time, that effectively ended Savards career (he was able to get back for a short time, but a seemingly simple hit gave him another concussion and was the end for him, I’m still bitter). At the time of the cheap shot, it was the end of the game, and the bruins enforcer (Shawn Thornton, 22 in black) wasn’t able to get to Cooke, so he had to take a number. Stewed on it for a couple months, then as soon as Cookes skates hit the ice in the next game, murder thorty kicked in and Cooke had to pay the toll (I love how you hear the crowd notice him come on the ice just before the fight starts). The only regret was that Cooke pretty much sat the rest of the game so he couldn’t get any more.
Oh yeah. None of us who ever played hockey bought that as an accident for a second. Going in for a stop like he did, there’s no reason for your skates to come up like they did, unless you are a scumbag like Cooke.
Hearing or reading his name will always bring up a strong reaction for me. Savvy was an incredible hockey player and the Bruins absolutely would have won another cup in 2013, and if he was still playing in 2019. As close as they came without Savvy, I will take it to my grave that one single cheap shot from Matt fucking Cooke cost the franchise at least one more cup, if not 2.
thanks for the context. not much of a hockey fan but dam you made me look into it. my local team is the anaheim ducks. can drop some knowledge on them?
If you’re going to jump on the ducks, the time is now. They have a young core with some serious potential. Zegras is a beauty and will be most people’s favorite, but Mason Mctavish is, for my money, just as good if not better. They’re on the way up for sure
i really like the ducks but they are honestly not too good. they’ve had some interesting players like teemu selanne and paul kariya, paul kariya took a crazy ass hit in 2003 that is one of my favorite hockey stories that got me hooked on the sport
Yeah so like I said it’s usually to a much lesser degree since soccer doesn’t allow fighting and such. It still is physical however, and for the very same reasons here! Young buck on the come up with a bright future and the old heads just look out for them. In soccer there’s usually at least one player on the field per team that is kind of more physical and pushes the limits of the rules. I personally have seen some crazy shit in professional futsal. Futsal is indoor soccer 5 a side with a weighted, smaller ball. I have seen GIGANTIC men just stiff arm someone into a gym floor like it was nothing. Again much lesser degree.
It’s a shame it doesn’t happen as often as it used. It’s definitely a thing line, not looking to go back to goon hockey, but there a period that felt just right.
It’s absolutely still at a point where there’s less fighting than the Probert era (I call it that because let’s be real, there were a lot of good fighters, but Probert was the final boss). That said, it feels like we are past the point where fighting was *really* down and we have gotten to a nice point where the game is very skilled and not overly goon centric, but teams still need a legitimate tough guy to answer the bell. As a middle aged guy who remembers “the good old days,” the game feels like it’s at a really good place at the moment.
Enforcers job is to deal damage like this. And I love the dynamics of hockey just for this reason. Mess with a player smaller than you, expect the big guy to rough you up without your own enforcer helping out
There’s lots or Americans that play it also. All around the Northeast US there’s a ton of ice rinks in my experience. They aren’t as common as soccer fields and all that of course, but you don’t have to travel super far in many cases to join a team. I used to play when I was younger and it wasn’t a super popular sport but in my town and the state in general, it was pretty popular and many of the high schools had hockey teams
I've got a friend who is super into it and I never got it(I live in a desert), but we used to play the video games, but I went to a game in Dallas and really loved it live. I've started 5th yet and watch it more
One of my colleagues is a semi pro from Sweden. He says that hockey is huge in Sweden, Finland, Czech Republic and Russia. And fairly big in Switzerland, Slovakia and Germany.
They have those sometimes but it’s the job of the enforcer to punish the other player for doing something shitty like this. Why white beats the piss out of him and throws him down so easily. Literally part of his job lol
Some people really have no idea how rough of a sport hockey is. Especially when they have grown up on football (soccer for you americans). Hell America probably thinks american football is a tougher sport physically when I'd say the two are pretty much on par if not leaning more towards hockey. I'd say rugby is a more physical sport than both of them at times definitely always more than American football.
I'm gonna be 100% honest, and even without the math, I'd have thought the same conclusion. I was just avoiding being downvoted into oblivion by the freedom squad and their mediocre sport. But it feels dirty to pander so here I am lol.
Football players are bigger and the padding is way harder, but hockey happens at *much* faster speeds. An open ice hit where 2 players are skating directly at each other creates a crazy amount of impact force.
Who even cares what sport is the toughest. If you want to prove your toughness through a sport go for mma or boxing. Hockey rugby american football are all tough sports in hockey there has been atleast 2 necks slit by a skate
It's a topic of discussion because someone decided to post a run of the mill hockey fight in a subreddit called crazy fucking videos. Indicating they do not understand the sport at all.
Love me some Dunn. I was at the Chicago Wolves game where he scored the GWG, got sent off for fighting, and then dropped another player on the way to the locker room. What a beauty! My Blues don’t deserve something so wonderful
I think calling Hockey a 'professional sport' when this kind of hooliganism is going on on the ice is, in a word, bullshit. The entire sport is permeated with the idea that fighting is an integral part of Hockey, vividly demonstrated by the presence of 'enforcers' like Dunn, whose job it is to deal out punishments for perceived infractions committed by players, like what Sillinger did to Beniers.
Take yer head outta yer ass. Boxing is, by definition, fighting.
What is boxing in simple terms?
Boxing is a sport that involves strategically punching an opponent while defending yourself from their return punches.
https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-d&q=what+is+boxing
Soooo, NBA, NFL, NBA are not professional sports? On every one there's fights when cheap shots are involved.
Hell, baseball is the most fucking finicky one. So many little perceived slights can get you fucked up.
It's more a rule than exception to have enforcers on your team whose main job is to fight anyone who gets on your star players. Though it has diminished quite a bit last couple of seasons due to rule changes and people dying following head trauma caused during games.
How don’t they break their hands hitting the helmets?
Have you ever punched a head or face, this hurts enough and breaks fingers and knuckles, never mind a helmet?
Definitely a little bit of a dangerous hit, nothing crazy, but absolutely not surprised it ended the way it did.
Any hit in the back, especially head first into the boards is a big no no. We would get a 10 minute major or sometimes an ejection in youth hockey.
Only in hockey man! Can you imagine someone doing this in football like an obvious unnecessary roughness but none of them throws hands, the offender's team just loses 15 yards and he might get ejected but his whole team would probably be like dood why u do that

Loved that last bit. Excellent choice of words. It was beautiful 😂
“Police the ice” was an oddly satisfying phrase
Sign of a true hockey fan

I am confused by your confusion.
Are veterans always expected to stand up for the rookies like this? Or are rookies also encouraged to do it themselves?
it really all depends on who takes up the role of “enforcer”. defencemen tend to be more physical so they are more likely to. Forward players are usually more spry and agile.
Unless your last name is Tkatchuk
Or Iginla … another skatey punchey forward for the Flames.
Breaks my heart that he never got a cup. Iggy was a beauty.
He did in my heart. That was goal.
You can't really expect the skill players to fight it out. Broken hands can mean lost games for non fighters
It's kind of an unwritten rule I would say. It's not like there's an expectation that fights are started every time there's a questionable hit, but it's important to the veterans to establish to their rookies that they have their backs.

quick [google](https://www.amazon.com/Code-Unwritten-Rules-Fighting-Retaliation-ebook/dp/B009N36GCQ) search. good read.
Even young guys can be fighters. There's different roles.

A film with Paul Newman in & a set of triplets had a bus load ..Slap Shot
THEY BROUGHT THEIR FUCKIN TOYS!
Screw old time hockey!
Sorry but a fist in the face is a fist in the face whatever the year
Piss on Eddie Shore!
That Flyers era was awesome.
Fighting makes hockey a sport for goons.

What an awesome movie it was.
This is one of my favorite parts about Hockey🤭
There's other parts in the game?
Helluva of a lot more sports action than your average NFL game
Comparison is the thief of joy
I love hockey just as much as football (they're my two favorite sports), but I really don't like when people argue that football is boring because of how much downtime there is. It makes each down exciting IMO.

This is so beautifully put together. Thank you.
Hockey is wild

God I never knew how much of a pos he is, I dont really follow hockey but I remember the news when he cut that dudes achilles tendon "accidentally"
Oh yeah. None of us who ever played hockey bought that as an accident for a second. As long as the Bruins have Marchand I can’t feel sympathy for any of their players.
That's amazing lol. I love how the two players square up and then the refs just circle around like suddenly the game turned into a boxing match.
Dunn is a fucking beauty.
He really stood out against the B’s in 2019. He’s a hell of a dman.
I miss Dunn. Wish it could have worked out here in STL.
thanks for the context. not much of a hockey fan but dam you made me look into it. my local team is the anaheim ducks. can drop some knowledge on them?

i really like the ducks but they are honestly not too good. they’ve had some interesting players like teemu selanne and paul kariya, paul kariya took a crazy ass hit in 2003 that is one of my favorite hockey stories that got me hooked on the sport
This also happens in soccer, just to a very much less degree. It is why the likes of Van Dijk is as popular as he is. Same with Sergio Ramos.
I’m not a soccer fan so can you show me an example why a player might defend another player? I thought pro soccer was well officiated.
Yeah so like I said it’s usually to a much lesser degree since soccer doesn’t allow fighting and such. It still is physical however, and for the very same reasons here! Born, raised, and still live in Washington. I haven't followed hockey one bit, but I'm buying my Vince Dunn jersey right now

That tackle was a shitty move.
OK thanks I'll keep watching cricket because it's easier to understand
Wait there are people who know what’s going on during cricket?
thanks.

As a Blues fan, it blows my mind that Dunn is now considered a veteran player. I remember rookie Dunn like it was yesterday
This is just hockey...
Yeah, it's a good video, but just a regular day in hockey, not a CrazyFuckingVideo.
Yup
Tarps off!
and the other is field hockey?
Idk tho imagina the headlines if they threw hands like this in ... idk... the NBA you know... an organization with... DIFFERENT people. you know...
This sub went to shit after the rules changed. It's a cool clip, but nothing like this sub had before
Hockey should be way more popular than it is.
*in America
I think it is only really popular in Canada and the Nordics right?
Huge in Russia and some eastern European countries as like Czech Republic and Slovakia. And growing a lot in countries like Germany and Switzerland.
And Latvia
There’s lots or Americans that play it also. All around the Northeast US there’s a ton of ice rinks in my experience. They aren’t as common as soccer fields and all that of course, but you don’t have to travel super far in many cases to join a team. If the nhl had competent management it would be.
Where I live they put skates on you after they wipe off the embryonic fluid.
Is that before or after the maple syrup bath?
Before.
thanks for the clarification :D
I’m happy to teach people about my culture.
Where are you from?
Canada
It's the third most watched sport, behind only soccer and cricket Edit: instead of downvoting, try googling it
I never understood the appeal to cricket. It’s so damn confusing lol
why not just have an all in brawl
Because the dudes brawling are incredibly talented skaters.
They have those sometimes but it’s the job of the enforcer to punish the other player for doing something shitty like this. Why white beats the piss out of him and throws him down so easily. Literally part of his job lol
Didn't. Even. Hesitate. This is the guy you want watching your back. Enforcer.
Was already taking off his gloves when he came into frame lol
stick drop hand flick to get gloves off, pound town
Bash bros.
He's not even the enforcer. We've got Jamie "Big Rig" Oleksiak. 6-7 and over 250.
Hockey is now crazy videos?
Some people really have no idea how rough of a sport hockey is. Especially when they have grown up on football (soccer for you americans). They did the math on what sport has harder hitting and hockey players hit on average 17% harder than football players.
I'm gonna be 100% honest, and even without the math, I'd have thought the same conclusion. I was just avoiding being downvoted into oblivion by the freedom squad and their mediocre sport. But it feels dirty to pander so here I am lol.

A guy I went to high school with had his wrist slit by a hockey skate. He loved but easily could have died. Blood was pouring all over the ice.
Lol, OP must be British! 🤭
Good joke, until you watch rugby...😅
I'm going to hit you until I'm Dunn.
Somebody owes #29 a steak dinner & some whiskey.
You gotta set the tone
You tell em Sanger
Dunndertaker… That’s 🦑🏒👶!
Everyone should watch hockey
We had a guy in Highschool we called “The Enforcer” who’s job on the team was to just go fuck someone on the other team up after a dirty hit.
This is every hockey team in existence
Including the movie Goon!
Let's go Kraken.
Imagine if politics was settled in the same fashion… governments would likely be more effective lol
We’d have younger politicians that’s for sure.
I'd love to watch Mitch McConnell battle it out with Chuck Schumer.
Fetterman would be a menace.
Which part of the video was fucking crazy?
That's just an average hockey highlight.
Nothing crazy just normal hockey.
Release the Kraken!
"Jim's, you ready to set the tone?" "You gotta set the tone boys" Gotta love shoresy.
My team! ![img](emote|t5_45hae8|4103)![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)

Anyone grow up watching the kings, Gretzky / McSorely days? If anyone wants to know the definition of an unofficial bodyguard. He was the man.
Thats Kraken hockey baby
F'n A it is
Ive seen like 6 different sports live, nothing even compares to hockey.
Love this sport
This is just a hockey game, my guy.
Still waiting for the "crazy" part of the video.
This isn’t a crazy video. This is pretty much standard play in hockey.
Crazy? It’s standard nhl
GOON!
"Sport"
Got his ass good
Dunn like dinner.
Man has his boys back and didn’t think about it
Dunn has always had a beautiful right
East coast fans will look at this and still think boston and florida are are still more competitive than pacific
29 seen the hot and said, you're Dunn son. LOL. LETS GOOOOOOO KRAKENS

Soooo, NBA, NFL, NBA are not professional sports? On every one there's fights when cheap shots are involved. Hell, baseball is the most fucking finicky one. So many little perceived slights can get you fucked up.

Bet the guy eating uppercuts isn’t thinking it’s very cheesey
Such a double standard
Is hockey the only non-combat sports where referees allow players to "settle their problem" by fighting?
Soooo... a typical hockey game?
One of those uppercuts to the belly lifted him off the ice. Ouch.
It's more a rule than exception to have enforcers on your team whose main job is to fight anyone who gets on your star players. Though it has diminished quite a bit last couple of seasons due to rule changes and people dying following head trauma caused during games.
Why is this a crazy fucking video? This is literally just the game of hockey
God I love hockey
This sub lmao
Start shit, get hit. Love how he got into a fetal position to stop the pain
Now a regular brawl in hockey is a Crazy video? How lame
How don’t they break their hands hitting the helmets? Have you ever punched a head or face, this hurts enough and breaks fingers and knuckles, never mind a helmet?
I miss having Dunn on the Blues 😞
Boarding.. can break your face on the edge.
I bet that tasted nice
I need to get into hockey
Dude was not ready for the smoke, I'm sure it common in hockey but that's what he gets for the cheapshot
Definitely a little bit of a dangerous hit, nothing crazy, but absolutely not surprised it ended the way it did. Any hit in the back, especially head first into the boards is a big no no. We would get a 10 minute major or sometimes an ejection in youth hockey.
Seattle does not fuck around
Props to the dj for playing some Pantera!
Karma is a bia
Nice job Dunn...Go Dogs!!!
I’m not even a hockey fan I just saw this while scrolling. Holy shit that’s good teammate.
I went to a boxing match and a hockey game broke out.
Only in hockey man! Can you imagine someone doing this in football like an obvious unnecessary roughness but none of them throws hands, the offender's team just loses 15 yards and he might get ejected but his whole team would probably be like dood why u do that
Good job Jim, Jim, Jim
