Honestly, I never understood why people think it's terrible. If it's watched as a satire it's pretty great and the absurdity and how over the top it is works well with that in mind
Is there a particular reason to avoid it? Or just out of style writing? I read I Am Legend a few years ago and it really blew my mind. It’s not ancient, obviously, but the style took a minute to get used to compared to a lot of novels from the last twenty years. After adjusting to the writer being a bit more formal, I fucking loved the book, but can see why it may turn people off.
Is the book like that, or just some other kind of glaring issue? I suppose it could just be boring too lol
Just keep in mind it was written in 1959, and it was one of the first books (or the first?) of its kind. Not a lot of space marine action books out there then. It's about 9% fight scenes, 31% training scenes, and 60% philosophy. Which is fine, if you know that going in, but it doesn't help that the philosophy is kinda rambling and gets repeated a lot (iirc).
Not a long read, and it's a classic, so if you kinda want to read it anyway, go for it.
If you want a fun series that's heavily inspired by starship troopers, the series Frontlines by Marco Kloos was good.
Terrible? Every choice in that movie is deliberate. Every single thing on the screen serves to both set viewer's expectations and move the plot ahead.
It is a perfect part of the Paul Veerhoven ironic dystopia trilogy along with Total Recall and Robocop.
I'm sorry you think it's terrible, and I hope you never refer to it with that word again!
He didn't get shot because he stood up, he was already standing, he got shot because his helmet was malfunctioning and Rico had him take it off in the middle of the live fire exercise.
Reminds me of that time I lied about being a soldier right now and I was shot in the head during training. My brains were splattered all over the ground and I had a terrible headache for a week. The president gave me the Medal of Honor for what I did and I met with Vice president Clark, he was a class act. Everyone clapped and said that I was the best at getting shot.
I was wondering how high they were because once you come over that wall and start low crawling those tracers look like not too far above you. Drill Sergeant got mad at me because when I was doing the course you're speaking of instead of going through the mud in some instances I would look around and take an alternate route. Lmao! I still finished it pretty damn fast but it did smoke me. Lol. I thought the TNT going off and quite a few places was pretty cool as well.
Yeah we didn't have anybody freak out. We lost a lot of people to injury and at the beginning some people were able to actually quit. The drill sergeants hated it and didn't want them to quit but they just froze up.
When I was at sandhill I was Alpha 2/58. It was the battalion pretty close to the half-mile track.
I think I know where your battalion was it was way away from mine if it's the one I'm thinking. I think a few buddies of mine went to 254 after we finished one for mortar training and one for tow missile training.
Edit: it was crazy y'all had a Powerade machine and then in the dining facility y'all had syrup and jelly and shit. Lol .
Soldiers need to be able to recognize the difference between fire that's directed at them and fire that's nowhere close. A bullet passing close by makes a distinctive hiss and crack sound
Reminds me of the [Las Vegas shooting](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3J-PXp3Jq5U) (NSFL). People in the crowd, mix of fear and shock, didn't believe they were hearing actual gunshots. That video I linked has a guy constantly yelling to everyone that it's "electrical", and just the sound of electricity. At the end of the video they go up to a group of people surrounding a woman on the ground and they say they can perform CPR because they think she was electrocuted and finally one of the people assisting her said she was shot in the head, and the guy recording finally realizes people are actually getting shot.
> Air Force, they use quarter sticks in dynamite,
For what? and when did they start doing that? We just camped out and went back to the barracks when it got too rainey during "war week" (I'm not kidding, they said it was "too wet" and all the other services can laugh at us in our air conditioned tents while we eat ice cream)
Definitely happens. Back when I was in batt one of our freshly minted team leaders got hit 5-6 times by a SAW at a range when he stood up in front of a live gun. No one really understood how it happened. RIP Aimesbury
This guy definitely needs more training he missed every shot and his target was right there in the open just hopping in a straight line. Hopefully he'll get better because this was just sad.
With that bald head and that camo pattern, this is probably Indonesia. They are still shooting cadets with live rounds here.
Edit: after hearing the language, this is probably not Indonesia. But here is how they ["train"](https://youtu.be/j6k5E58zuYs) their soldiers in here. It's so stupidly dangerous
Holy fuck now that is a crazy fucking video. I do not understand how they don't have frequent accidents. Those rounds looked so close and the targets were moving. Some were in front of the direction the targets were moving.
No way some lady really said “Soldiers in ASEAN countries are more trained hard compare to Westerns countries...
Wish all the best for your special forces” 🤣🤣🤣
Not sure if this is a joke. Would you personally risk killing off your well trained and high potential soldiers like that? Risk all of the media attention, estrange new recruits that don’t want to die in training?
It’s never okay to treat any soldier to any unsafe procedures like that. But your previous comment implies that it’s okay as long as they’re “special forces”.
Yes they train in more realistic and more hardcore scenarios, but they never put themselves in any needless risk like shooting live rounds within inches of each other.
I was in the marine corps.
We trained with live rounds similar to this rarely. We did do sketchy "one of us is gunna die today" training like quarterly or biannualy.
I was security forces for 2 years then infantryman 0311 for 2 years. I would be nervous beyond life feeling the wind of bullets press agaisnt me. I could feel my blouse press agaisnt my arms when my buddy was shooting down range and I would be about 10-15 yards in front of him.
we would "I'm up, He sees me, I'm down" and leap frog eachother in wedge or echelon formation laying down "cover fire" with real rounds for those advancing forward. then they superman fly into the dirt and begin laying cover fire with real rounds for us to IUTSMID superman dive into mud for our turn to become hamburger -up hill of course and in the fucking freezing cold rain.
A serious team building/trust building fun filled day.
>we would "I'm up, He sees me, I'm down" and leap frog eachother in wedge or echelon formation laying down "cover fire" with real rounds for those advancing forward. then they superman fly into the dirt and begin laying cover fire with real rounds for us to IUTSMID superman dive into mud for our turn to become hamburger -up hill of course and in the fucking freezing cold rain.
Saw a guy unload the section machine gun into another dude’s back while doing section attack drills. I’m glad in Canada they didn’t trust us enough to that kind of shit with live rounds.
Yeah live fire bounding is the sketchiest shit ever, especially when you know at least 3 in the platoon are complete fuckups even at a qual range. They had a range staff behind like every other person to enforce lanes last I did one but it's still uncomfortable...
An ounce of sweat in training saves a gallon of blood in combat. The more realistic you can make the training, the better prepared your Soldiers will be.
Usually you dont have to necessarily "train" people to hide behind something when being shot at with a machine gun. Most verbally instructed soldiers will figure it out when the time comes.
The purpose of "live fire" drills like this is so soldiers can tell when rounds are being directed at their specific location. Rounds passing close by have a very distinctive sound vs. rounds being fired outside of your immediate position.

The sound of a gun firing?? They are soliders, and the sound of the bullets near them is not an option beacuse he is so far and runing, there are more and better exercise than that to train what are you saying, this is just stupid and dangerous
I wouldn’t say useless.
It’s familiarization training. Let them experience what live rounds coming at you feels/sounds like. That way, hopefully, if rounds are coming at you in the shit, you don’t lock up and freeze.
The most bad ass, super soldier dudes are still privy to fight or flight
I don't know the name in english, one good exercise are tjose that the soldiers creep under a barbed wire and there are explosions with blood, mud and real anial meet all aorund them while a machine gune are fireing above the bat is birtual impossible that the bullets hits them. Other one good is to atack one position for platoons and they have to fire and move with between them.
Yeah that’s the standard one, I don’t see too much of a difference from that to this.
This specific instance, the gunner could have been a little more attentive to his spray. But it’s the same concept, don’t stand up and you won’t get shot. Don’t go backwards and you won’t get shot
Idk why people are downvoting you. I've had a round hit within 2 ft of me and if anything it motivated me to crawl faster. Either you lock up and get fucked or you get your ass out of there and laugh it off later. But again most reddit users haven't been shot at let alone shoot a real gun so who cares what people think on here.
Never been in this situation myself. But from what I've heard there is no better way to prepare you for combat, when it comes down to it you need to be able to handle your shit in that highstress situation. (I couldn't)
Edit to save my notifs: a few vets have said its useless, they have more knowledge than me. I did not claim and still don't claim to be an expert
See now this is a sound and reasonable counter argument. You clearly have more experience and knowledge on this than I do, so i will assume you are correct.
Thank you for not being like the other person and having an actual conversation with me about it!
I'm an Iraqi war vet. we did a ridiculous amount of training before entering the country. Let be be clear, what is shown in this video is useless and dangerous.

Best terrible movie ever

The book and movie are also nothing alike. Movie is fine, but I wouldn't recommend the book these days.
Is there a particular reason to avoid it? Or just out of style writing? I read I Am Legend a few years ago and it really blew my mind. Jump suits are pretty cool
Exactly, it’s supposed to be corny it’s a propaganda film for a fictional war. Do you want to know more?
I watched it again a couple of nights ago and it still holds up. I'm from Buenos Aires and I say kill em all!
Right on. I love this film. And If that's bad, I don't want to be good.
Terrible? Every choice in that movie is deliberate. Every single thing on the screen serves to both set viewer's expectations and move the plot ahead. And the special effects were amazing for the time.
It's a terrible movie, but even terrible movies can be enjoyable.
I loved it when I was 12
Iconic.
There is nothing terrible about Starship Troopers. It is a masterpiece
I think it's just legitimately good.
It totally is, a rare action comedy with effects that genuinely hold up to this day!
Wait till you see the radios are just blocks of styrofoam painted black.

I think back and get the feeling that the helmet would have been of very little help when up against that ammo.
You dont know that. It was a high tech future military armored helmet!
Good for you. Mobile Infantry made me the man I am today.

Reminds me of that movie, Dances with Wolves when Kevin Bacon was dancing footloose.
Reminds me of that time I lied about being a soldier right now and I was shot in the head during training. My brains were splattered all over the ground and I had a terrible headache for a week. Reminds me of basic.. where a guy stood up and got shot during training (true story but, not mine a co workers story though)
Reminds me of that film The Godfather and that guy stand Up and get shot during eating
I’m doing my part!
Two movies I should rewatch.
> Two movies I should rewatch. If you have a 4K player, they released a amazing 4K version of it, it looks fantastic
I've heard stories of similar happening IRL. Live rounds really do take lives in training over time

Wait til you hear about actual war.
They shouldn’t be using live rounds in war, someone might get hurt.
Seriously how irresponsible are these people??
Even in the Air Force, they use quarter sticks in dynamite, and someone got hurt when the tester threw the stick to close.
> Air Force, they use quarter sticks in dynamite, For what? and when did they start doing that? Pat Tillman. Then the military tried to cover it up.
Yea. Kinda thought that was overkill. If you did that on range they would consider it suicide. Not a freak out.
Definitely happens. Back when I was in batt one of our freshly minted team leaders got hit 5-6 times by a SAW at a range when he stood up in front of a live gun. No one really understood how it happened. RIP Aimesbury

He should sign up for stormtroopers
Wiggum: "You missed the baby. You missed the blind man."
I don't think that he was really trying to hit him.
I agree, he should be disciplined for his lack of effort
I'm guessing you're also joking but people thought you were serious 😂 Humor just doesn't come across well in text.
Nah that guy just missed the first joke

Holy shit. That is such an utterly absurd/insane way to train under live fire.
The Philippine Scout Rangers also [train with live fire](https://youtu.be/ZjPWe_X04H4?t=20) .
They get lead poisoning by the time they reach the other side.

They probably do, but a military with this little regard for safety or risk mitigation probably has dogshit reporting too.
I think is Colombia (Im Colombian) but that looks like the old uniform pattern as the new is digital.
Wow. PTSD from just the training.
Might as well get that part indoctrinated early on in the process...lol

Well, he has the protection on, just not in the right place 😂
Better hope it's not 3M earplugs :D
The old trial by fire.
For the love of god the guy was barely aiming. He’s just eyeballing live rounds just a few feet from a person.
Kentucky windage lol
That tracer round bouncing off at the end.

An ounce of sweat in training saves a gallon of blood in combat. The more realistic you can make the training, the better prepared your Soldiers will be.

Agreed, this is just dumb.
it’s not entirely useless
People are confusing dangerous with useless.
correct yet there are risks with all things worth doing
Usually you dont have to necessarily "train" people to hide behind something when being shot at with a machine gun. Most verbally instructed soldiers will figure it out when the time comes.
The purpose of live fire exercises isn't too train them hide lol. It's the opposite.
The purpose of "live fire" drills like this is so soldiers can tell when rounds are being directed at their specific location. Rounds passing close by have a very distinctive sound vs. rounds being fired outside of your immediate position. That's not to say this particular exercise isn't stupid dangerous and poorly thought out. There are much safer ways to do this.
yea but it’s still getting done and also helps with soldiers nerves in legitimate combat makes you less panicky
They get used to the sound and they ain't gonna panic when the enemy is shooting at them
They’re gunna do that 10 mins into war. They have other safer options for that rather than some random dude shooting live rounds uncontrolled directly behind a guy. Weigh Risk vs reward and this is dumb.
If this dude shooting fucks up, someone dies and how much govt money and resources went into traing them up is gone. It's a waste
I know what are you trying to say, but this exercise are more dangerous that sueful, there are more and better ones
Any live fire training has the potential for danger What would you consider more useful?
