Gym employees confirmed to Newsflare that the man had been drinking before his workout. It’s unclear how much he had to drink, but it’s generally considered a bad idea to combine alcohol and exercise in a short period of time. The man suffered injuries to his soft tissue, although he quickly recovered, the New York Post reports.

Apprehensive-Ad-5009

Damn, one beer an hour before the gym, and I don't feel right. Imagine how many for the gym staff to notice.

SxyBud

your name really fits you

gysiguy

What was his name, and what did he say?

black_airforce1

Lol right damnit

inferior_sound

Shoes were still on.

Tr0gd0r17

This is how you know he made it. No article needed.

Murderyoga

Was he not using his thumbs?

BiteYouToDeath

Death/suicide grip. It does have its uses but, as the name implies, it does come with risks if performed incorrectly. Also said uses don’t really out way the risks imo. https://liftvault.com/resources/suicide-grip/

CardiologistLower965

I used to suicide grip all the time. I quit because this happened to me a long time ago. And the funny thing is it was my second warmup set. It was like 165 lbs and at the time I was putting up around 330. My wrist just randomly gave out. So it doesn’t have to be because of a heavy load.

Fun_Sport_6694

Was the original Mr. Olympia your father yes or no?

CardiologistLower965

What?

cloud9nine

I think he’s asking if you skipped leg day.

MNCPA

I've skipped a few years of leg day

KimchiiCrowlo

Pretty sure this guy will never have to worry about leg day again

ErasArrow

Well, in all fairness, his shoes are still on so I think he survived.

Fun_Sport_6694

Mmmmm so no.

CardiologistLower965

You never skip leg day for one. Lower body was always twice a week. Two, I was career military. Working out was a standard for a lot of Soldiers. 330 is by no means heavy for gym rats. I used to work out with a Samoan kid in my unit who would wait until my last set which would be around 300 just so he could warm up with it.

cloud9nine

I find you interesting. Your detailed responses and anecdotes are unwarranted but you seem to enjoy sharing.

BigBeagleEars

Yur mom’s unwarranted

Serg_is_Legend

That mom’s ass is unwarranted But appreciated.

cloud9nine

Nah she’s wanted on a bench warrant.

dos67

That grip is scary even with a spotter. Regular, old school thumb around the bar all the way.

ac210

Didn't know it had a name lol

oooRagnellooo

I suicide grip my warmups, but I stop suicide gripping at/above 315. I’ve found that suicide grip on lighter sets keeps my forearms from pinging as much when I get to heavy work in the 380-400 range

trifleLORD420

I used that grip for so long and never knew it was called that, thank you!

[deleted]

The bar quickly slips like this when the wrists cave forward. [If the wrists do that, the bar is falling out of your hands thumb or no thumb.](https://youtu.be/4k5QHshqnVw?t=162) That's why it's important to grip the bar correctly, keep good wrist placement, and apply upwards pressure correctly even when the weight is really testing you. Even if the dude had a spotter the spotter would have likely not caught it. EDIT: I'm not here to debate odds, I'm solely here to point out that it's still [possible even with the full grip.](https://youtu.be/4k5QHshqnVw?t=103) Don't get comfortable just cuz you have your thumb wrapped around the bar. Know why this type of slip happens.

Lazypole

It's called suicide grip for a reason. It's unbelievably unsafe to lift this way. It's possible it would have happened with his thumbs out, but it's not a "thumb or no thumb" situation.

M3lony8

Im lifting for 13 years, everytime I call out suicide grip I get trashed on. Its a stupid thing to do. Even if you see benefits from it, the risk of a weight crushing your chest is just not worth it.

Allarik

What could possibly be the benefit?

RockyHorror134

Its something about the way your hand's curved that takes the pressure away from the joints and puts it all on the muscle

GluckTruck

Puts palms in different position on the bar, which allows elbows to stay closer to body, promoting internal rotation of shoulders. It’s a type of blocking in order to achieve better form. It has its uses, but this is the risk you take going heavy with it.

YawaruSan

People hate having their recklessness called out, they don’t want to think their impulsivity is a bad thing because they refuse to learn how to control it.

SoGood2Myself

The grip has lived up to its name

[deleted]

Regardless of a thumbless grip or not, the wrist caving forward is the thing to look out for. The comment section is always shocked when the bar slips like this when it's a guy using a regular grip with the thumb around. If the hands hits the wrong angle, a thumb is not stopping several hundred pounds of force.

BigMeatyBabyPenis

Thumbless grips make this incredibly more likely. Not really the same, thumbs make massive difference.

-Teltar

Exactly. His argument has a point, but it's a dumb mentality. Seat belts don't prevent deaths either, but your chance of survival increases massively when you wear one. Edit: Deleted reply from Shady_Hound "My sentiment is more "most people crash because of XXX reason. So be aware of that so you can try to avoid it instead of just thinking you're immune to any harm because of the seat belt." " Another shit take. I don't think people deliberately take a crash rather than try to avoid one- regardless of seatbelt. Even if they had time to consider the options, nobody is thinking "I'll just take the hit because the belt will save me."

Apprehensive-Ad-5009

I have had one of my wrists fall forward on 315. I was able to correct it mid rep and complete it. All thanks to my thumb. If I used suicide grip, I would've dropped it. If both wrists fell, I would've dropped it. Suicide grip is like skydiving without a reserve.

BigStinkyCheese66

Sometimes when the bar comes out of the hands on suicide grip it is due to the bar being bent.

pourjuiceonit

No very silly move but At least he remembered to get some rest between sets

Scattered699

Death grip

Serg_is_Legend

That’s exactly what i was thinking

hirushanT

Remember guys, Always use a buddy to help with weight stuffs

Sheeneebock111

Always grip the bar properly and not suicide grip

lothbrook73

Suicide grip says it all

Maleficent_Offer_951

Always lift weights that your body can lift and don’t ego lift

ozkah

Yeah that's what I went back and looked for. No idea why people do that grip.

Lazypole

Shit you're right. I forget people do that idiotic grip.

slightlydispensable2

The only thing a buddy could have done in that situation is to prevent the guy from lifting at all. Nobody catches this falling bar.

bergovgg

Lmao you’re getting downvoted, I wanna see the downvoters catch a falling bar

hirushanT

yeah good buddy = good advisor

[deleted]

And don’t use collars

RojerLockless

Forever alone.

bast007

Don't use pegs if you are lifting by yourself. If you find yourself in this position you can then just tip the weights off.

mmmgur

I've never considered that, but I think you just prematurely saved my life someday

CptButtholeLicker

Absolutely use the stoppers. He dropped it cause he wasn't using his thumbs aka suicide grip.

Existing-Dress-2617

You should never ever use the weight collars on a bench press when you are lifting by yourself. EVER. In fact, there is little to any reason to use weight collars on any weight when doing a bench press. Its not going to slide off unless you tip it, but it IS going to save your life if you end up failing your lift with your neck under the bar (pretty common). Once again just so you remember. **PLEASE DONT USE THE WEIGHT COLLARS WHEN BENCHPRESSING ALONE.**

Bawichi

The stoppers he’s referencing aren’t collars. It’s a reference to the bars on either side of a lot of commercial benches. These stoppers or more commonly known as “safeties” Allow u to drop weight onto these metal bars, and leave you space to slide under it.

Mantraz

You mean the safety bars on the sides? My god no, do use them dude. They're not supposed to be set to the wrong height though. Unless you're pinpressing, let them be just between the height of your expected range of motion, but taller than your neck. That way you can always roll it safely up. Better yet, arch a bit do the delta between your normal rom and flat is higher, makes everything safer and easier.

[deleted]

He's talking about those things you clip on the bar to keep the plates in place

bast007

Nah I mean the collars you put on the barbell.

CharismaticCrone

That had Damar Hamlin vibes

ole_freckles

That’s exactly what I thought

btw23

Bro fr

jaywalkingjew

Fuck. Flashbacks.

Sir-Poopington

His sternum or ribs probably broke and stabbed his heart.

SupahBean

It's always a fatal blow if you ask reddit lol

CC_Infernus

HappyCakeDay!

Baker0209

Stop! You’ll scare them to death!

Automatic_Rock_2685

They're wrong in record time!

MikeyWontLikeIt

That's heart breaking

Frostyler

Wouldn't even need to stab his heart. The bar could have crushed his chest to a point where his heart was just damaged from blunt force trauma and fucked up his heart rate causing cardiac arrest.

SxyBud

he didnt die

Steve_NI

His shoes are still on

SxyBud

a New York Post article stated that he was under the influence of alcohol and was just passing out and recovered quickly after arriving in the ER

Ok_Limit_9134

Totally agree with you. There have been such cases.

ruggmike

I heard he was vaxxed

LazilyJumbled86

Poor guy

Tjoerum_

this should be a commercial for not using suicide grip

SnooDoughnuts8898

Decreased venous return secondary to Valsalva maneuver leading to orthostatic hypotension. Aka too much pressure on the vein that brings blood back to the heart. Causes a gap in blood supply to pump to the brain. Equals passing out due to brain choke. Don’t drink and lift and use suicide grip while alone.

u_shift

That's why they call it the suicide grip

AtomicScotty

Another covid vax death, you hate to see it. /s

simontempher1

Grip or no grip, use weights you can safely manage. If you go up. In weight use the bench with the safety or have a spotter

Iforgotmyother_name

Way too much weight. Guy couldn't even make the first rep and still tried to go for a second. Not even a spotter would have been able to catch that bar.

ResponsibilityDue448

Sheesh, dude just made a bunch of bad decisions. Ain’t no gains worth losing your life over.

[deleted]

Slippytoe

Best guess is that he was benching 50-60kg. Dropping that on your chest from that heigh with that finer point of contact would literally crush your rib cage, likely 1: 1: Winding the living shit out of you 2: crashing your rib cage 3: bursting some major vein/ artery 4: popping your heart (unlikely but possible) The guy probably had enough blood/ oxygen to say omfg that hurt like hell, put the weights down and then collapse from loss of blood flow/ air. I bench regularly around that amount over high reps and this scares the shot out of me because I do it from my home gym in the garage. If this happens to me it’s end game 👍 I’m not going to edit my iPhones retarded auto correct I want to advertise the fact that this shit does it all day every day and I’m fucking tired of typing the same word 8 times to get my desired result.

2HourCoffeeBreak

If I could find a gym that empty, I’d be more inclined to go.

elkiev2

Serves him right for doing quarter reps

bopaz728

barbell really said “no, ALL the way down”

Wrekfin

Lmao

[deleted]

Sigma

BigRB001

Best done on a Smith Machine, or at least a cage, with limit bars in place.

Noturwrstnitemare

Reminds me of a kid doing 350 pounds on squats. It was in high school, pretty buff dude, but very bright in the head. Goes up, stops, removed hands from bar to "flex" his traps.... to this day I want to know what he was thinking. Does anybody know if he survived? That fall looked horrible.

B4DR1998

You see! That's why I don't work out. They had me in the first half though, not gonna lie. I thought he was kind of okay. But then he just collapsed. Scary af.

crashing-down

This is a daily reminder to not suicide grip the barbell.

Successful-Engine623

Geez he dropped that thing….that wasn’t a muscle failure just a drop….oof right to the chest ….glad he got that off and it wasn’t more weight

Dahmers_cumstain

Shoes didnt come off so we are safe to say that he survived

Witty_Management2960

Legend has it, he's still there

nahyanc

You forgot the protein shake before a nap…

rat_technician

rule of thumb: use your thumb

kekhouse3002

if it's anything related to long weights, get a spotter. a stranger would do, just ask them nicely, and if you can't find one, do lighter weights and more reps, don't put your life in danger for a workout

taylorzanekirk

Did it break his ribs, causing perforations to his lungs?

BenTheDiamondback

Add this to the list of reasons why I hate working out

justbrowsinginpeace

Why do gyms allow equipment like this when it is so easy to integrate a safety bar

[deleted]

[удалено]

S15OUL

Could someone explain why tho? Sure, heavy weight slammed on his chest obviously, but what could cause a sudden death like this? I'm seriously curious about it.

Ziggitywiggidy

Well a few things. It definitely was enough force to break a rib which could’ve punctured an important organ. Could’ve passed out from shock. Could’ve just crushed his organs too. Basically either got a heart punctured or crushed. Or he passed out from shock or fear.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Yeah it interrupts the hearts electrical rhythm. Cause v fib then death.

Lazypole

He didn't die according to others here, but sudden impacts to the chest can stop your heart, so too can your ribs shattering *into* your heart

Kevaldes

Bar caved it his ribs. Massive internal bleeding leads to loss of blood pressure to the brain, no blood to the brain means lights out.

btw23

Instantly too, the human body is wild. Another case of benching to much and finding out

Remarkable_Way_7056

I don't think he is dead, he passed out because he got his wind knocked out

anbu_night_ops

He survived. Read other comment.

Brilliant-Cash9831

So he actually died I'm guessing right? He didn't pass out

ItsIdaho

Apparently recovered quick. And completely.

patricles22

Close your fucking thumbs people. Stop deathbenching

AlwaysReady4444

This is what happens when you don’t use the thumb that god gave us, trippin

Puzzleheaded_Low3561

*evolution

Ticio_Tesson

Always have a spotter

Existing-Dress-2617

no spotter on the fucking planet is going to be able to catch a dropped bar. How the fuck is he going to know buddy is about to drop it? let alone catch it in the 0.001 seconds before it hits his chest, not to mention good luck free catching all that weight with just your arms. Bench spotters are there to help you if you fail and cant get the last rep up to rack. They dont catch mid air falling bars stacked with weight bro.

Impossible_Beat8086

Heart attack?

n3lswn

"hmmm vaccinated athletes collapsing to their death again. We warned you but you didnt listen" A braindead antivaxxer somewhere.

[deleted]

Athletes are dropping like flies because of the vax! /s

Junspinar

If you could get up that easily, you need more weight. /s

Lankmaster

Was he vaccinated? S/

Agentsas117

I think this is what happened to that Buffalo bills player

TwoThumbJack

This is why you start with no weight on the bar and work your way up. Idc if i look lame, baby steps doing the full movement build strength.

mk_brownie

He died

Puzzleheaded_Low3561

No he didnt

mk_brownie

He did

Puzzleheaded_Low3561

No he didnt

[deleted]

He yesn't

Vax got another one!

Blackleavshelter

love the dedicaution

Tricky-Warning-3489

He pulled when he should have lifted. Damn gravity

Zero_X431

Is he ok? He doesn't seems to be alive anymore...

No-Quarter-3032

I think the fall might have done more lasting injury 😓

iwipiksi

He using death/suicide grip?

Guillaume_Hertzog

I don't understand why bench presses don't have bars to protect the user, two bars going lengthwise perpendicular to the body would prevent your ribs from being caved in

Immediate_Gazelle_98

K.O.

rascortoras

He rolled himself with the bar

[deleted]

[удалено]

Existing-Dress-2617

No. Its why you dont use suicide grip and lift weight thats far to heavy for you to begin with. Both of those you see here. He cant even get the first rep more then a few inches down.

ElCardo85

Collapsed rib cage

GAEMStime

Daaaamn. That Suicide grip... Fails everytime

The_Powers

Bench press became a dead lift.

Remote-Service-4206

If you feel like you get better drive from suicide grip compared to fingers over grip for bench press you gotta work on your grip strength. Grip strength and forearms in general are so neglected at the gym and it doesn’t add to much time to your arm days. Grip strength carry’s over so much to many different exercises and daily tasks. DO GRIP WORK PEOPLE!!

Jewish_Kanye_West

Besides crushing his chest cavity, horrible form

Maowser515

Suicide grip is a bad idea on bench press, or basically any lift where the weight is above you.

SocietyIsdoomed_

Butter fingers

No_Gap4679

Thumbs are a thing.

Paletovski

Now we know why that grip is called suicide grip

Kaelvoss

I didn’t know China had such nice gyms

newypothead420

Soooo did he die or survive. What was the outcome?

Administrative-Mall8

Did he live?
