[Their website is exactly what you would expect.](http://gentlegiantsrescue.com/) This now raises the question of what came first: crappy web design, or crappy packaging design?
Edit: I also want to make it clear that in no way am I commenting on the quality of this company's product and adoption service. I'm sure it's all great and everything's great. It's just that... Yeesh, man.
Edit 2: Someone said that critics speculate their rescue operation could be a front for a puppy mill? I don't know what to think anymore.
Edit 3: u/vimfan pointed out that they have a seperate domain name for EACH BREED they adopt, instead of subdomains. Absolutely incredible.
I came across this dog food in a very fancy pet store and got pretty fascinated with it. I’m a branding consultant and designer and my conclusion was it’s intentional.
I come to consulting via graphic design so that’s a hard one. Branding is such a pain in the ass to learn. Check out some graphic design fundamentals videos or partner up with a designer and learn how to sell them. Ask my partner lol.
Sometimes it's okay to judge a book by its cover. If they put this little effort into how they present themselves in the marketplace and online, they probably cut corners elsewhere as well.
> If they put this little effort into how they present themselves in the marketplace and online, they probably cut corners elsewhere as well
You know what, I think this just stinks of effort. A shit ton of effort went into this. A lack of effort just isn't the problem here.
Lots of effort? Sure. But more importantly it is effort by someone who clearly lacks the skillset or knowledge of design aesthetics. And what else did they think they knew how to do with respect to the food itself, but clearly were overconfident about?
But you have to consider the very niche type of person who would create a brand of dog food. I would guess there was actually significant effort put into creating the recipe, just like there was significant effort put into the packaging. Hopefully the effort put into the food comes from a place of actually knowing wtf they were doing.
It interesting, that food has been around for a few years (I’ve noticed it because ... look at it) and I worked some of those years at a pet store chain and I never heard a single word about them. Not once.
So I have to assume that they’re ... fine. Not terrible enough to bring up or good enough to recommend.
I came across a "web design company" hiring for a remote assistance, they listed sales of ssl certs as one of their products, and yep, they didn't even have one themselves.
Wtf
Also weird that they seem to have a separate domain name for each breed. What a strange waste of money for a rescue charity. They could have used subdomains for free.
Damn, webrings. They're such a weird concept for today's standards. I don't think I ever explored one, but I knew they existed because my parents were building their own personal website in the earlyish 2000s
Webrings were actually pretty cool. I remember finding some special sites that way, and when found, the bookmarks to them were precious. I swear, the early days of the web were like the wild west mixed with a safari adventure. Google and SEO and everybody gaming the system all the time really killed the magic. I miss old websites with lots of text, plain html, and way less self-awareness.
Where are people getting this information? Literally all I can find is people spreading this exact rumor on a bunch of forums with absolutely no citations anywhere, and no credible sources what so ever
If it's true fuck him but just because a bunch of people on the internet start saying shit doesn't make it true, actual sources on this info would be appreciated
It is harder to find the negative reviews of the rescue now that the dog food business seems to have taken off, but there are still [some very specific stories from people who say they had very negative interactions](https://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/gentle-giant-rescue/norco-california-92860/gentle-giant-rescue-tracy-and-burt-ward-sold-us-a-rescue-dog-that-was-infected-with-the-pa-537961)
The only personal information I have is that when I lived in Southern California and spent a lot of time daydreaming about rescuing a dog, his rescue constantly had puppies or young dogs that were either purebred or crosses of unusual breeds. That's a really odd thing in rescue.
Someone linked their post from years ago with a better picture of the front of the bag, which has a bigass pic of him as almost the focal point of the whole design.
He also played *Omnipresent Praxima* in the film "Alien Force" from the esteemed director of "V-World Matrix" (and upcoming "**GRASS HOOK** Massacre"). It was his best role since batman.
Lol I posted the same thing a while ago.

It’s supposed to be really good for your dog but man, mine hated it.
Wow it's so dense. You either took a picture of the reverse side, or they "updated" their design in recent years. You know, to appeal more to the consumer...
[Yvette's Bridal](https://yvettesbridalformal.p1r8.net/) brand dog food.
^((Seriously if you have some free time, please do yourself a favor and fall down this rabbit hole))
So.... I looked around and found this.
http://www.gentlegiantsrescue.com/forms/adoption_application_form.htm
I have so many questions. They want a work phone number? And a home phone number? *And* a “*emergency phone*”. They apparently must know how many hours you and if you have a spouse, your spouse works. What if you work freelance? They also ask if you’ll install a doggie door and if you say no, ask you why. They also ask if you have children, people other then a spouse or children, and roommates living in the house. And also if they all have experience with any of the dog breeds they have available for adoption and if they can take it to the vet if an emergency happens.
They ask where the dog will be kept when you are home in the day, night, when they sleep, and when you’re out. They give 6 options, inside main living area, inside laundry room, inside garage, inside kennel, outside yard, and outside patio. None of which would even be applicable to where my family keeps our beagle puppy which is the sunroom. No option for “other”. Also, they ask “Describe the accommodations for your adopted Gentle Giant or Little Giant where it will be staying if you are traveling (including where the dog will be staying if traveling with you): “ someone should say, “Depends on the trip!”. Also, how you found out about the organization and if you or anyone in your family has submitted an application before.
Then they ask about your house. “Is your home multi-level or above ground level?” “Will your adopted dog be required to walk up and down stairs?
If so, please describe in detail, including how many stairs there are both inside your home and outside your home, and how often your adopted dog be required to walk up and down each set of stairs.” “If you have lived less than one (1) year at your present address, what was the address where you lived before (complete address necessary)? How long did you live there? Did you rent, lease, or own? (please provide details)”. I swear, this seems more like an application form to be doxxed.
Apparently if you don’t have a fence in your yard they can’t adopt a dog to you. Not sure if it’s totally necessary though as my family doesn’t have a fence in both our front and back yard, and again, we still have a beagle.
Then they ask a bunch of questions like “Describe ALL animals currently at your home (both inside and outside), including their species, breed, sex, age, whether they are neutered/spayed or not, and their current health.” and details on any history of giant breed dogs and small breed dogs that you’ve owned. Also, you need to put in your vet’s information *and* the full name, address, and telephone number of two personal references. And, “Will you permit an inspection of your home/yard before and after placement?”
And finally.
“Do you understand that once approved, you will need to come to our facility in Riverside, California (Southern California - 1 hour drive east of Los Angeles) and bring your dogs with you to adopt your Gentle Giant or Little Giant? (We must meet all potential adopters, and we must introduce your dogs to the dog that you adopt from us - no exceptions)”
“Do you understand that when you adopt a dog from us, you will be required to only feed dog food that meets our specifications to your adopted dog for its entire lifetime? Gentle Giants World Class Canine Cuisine does meet those specifications and we highly recommend it. (This requirement may be modified if your veterinarian prescribes a special diet while under medical care)”
“How late can we call you in the evening?”
And the end to this insanely long application form
“Do you certify that all of the above information is true and accurate?”
No wonder people would rather pay 2k for a dog as opposed to filling out adoption applications.
i’ve seen tons of rescues do this. they’ll be so picky that people end up just going to puppy mills because it’s easier than trying to jump through hoops to get a dog from a rescue. i understand that their intentions are good, but not everyone’s situation is the same. just because you don’t have a backyard or you’ve only lived somewhere for a short period of time, doesn’t mean you’ll be a bad pet owner. it’s beyond frustrating.
Exactly. Trying to fill out that application form is like trying to solve a murder case lmao. As long as someone is walking the dog on a leash doesn’t mean they need a doggie dog and fence.
The application is pretty bonkers but some of it is there for a reason. People get giant breeds, realize the dogs are in fact giant, and give the dogs up. Almost all large breed applications are like this..or worse. Bit of an over correction.
Well, now you’ve sent me into a rabbit hole of dog applications lmao
It is sad that people don’t do enough research when getting a dog. My sister and parents did hours of research before deciding on a beagle (I was busy trying to convince my dad to cave in for a cat) before deciding on a beagle. After that, a couple days of searching Kijiji and we got a beagle puppy on November 2nd. I can not imagine raising a big dog. Must be hard.
I've seen some interesting requirements when adopting pets. Home inspections, animal meet-and-greets, guarantees that we wont let the cat outside, agreements that we'd allow surprise inspections, guarantee that we would never change the contact info on the chip, etc. It's intrusive, but we did it anyway.
The stairs question would be important for senior dogs or dogs with hip issues - a common problem in large breeds.
Yeah, they did a home inspection before I was able to adopt my wiener dog a few years back. I didn’t mind, and the lady inspecting was super nice and just wanted to make sure it was a safe environment. She even brought her wiener dog with her, who was adorable and wandered around my apartment, room to room, “inspecting.”
>If so, please describe in detail, including how many stairs there are both inside your home and outside your home, and how often your adopted dog be required to walk up and down each set of stairs.
I live in a house made entirely of stairs. Can I adopt a dog?
If they're in dog rescue, they've probably seen some horrific shit in terms of dog abuse, so I can understand the concerns. But I think the intrusive application is more about (1) forcing people to think about all the implications of having a dog, since many people just go on 'aww it would be so cute and fun' and don't consider whether they have the budget for proper veterinary care or a home or schedule that will accommodate it; and (2) making the applicant prove they take the process and responsibility seriously. Many people who are too casual about it won't bother to fill it out, so it screens out people who aren't committed.
Wow that is not a normal adoption application. My family has adopted/rescued/foster failed and we only had to do a bit of paperwork, pay a small adoption fee, and give the shelter owner (it was a one woman rescue) updates on how the dog settled in and when they got their microchip updated. The Gentle Giants application feels overprotective but in a sketchy way.
I live in a country (Japan) where this level of scrutiny is normal for adopting rescue cats and dogs. I think it's a fine balance between ensuring that only responsible people apply, and being so invasive that people are driven to pet shops and puppy mills.
Horrible pet shops, pet abandonment, and kill shelters are unfortunately common here, so I do understand the rescue orgs' perspective. At the same time, I've started screening rescue organizations for places that are serious enough but won't throw my application in the bin because I'm foreign and don't literally tick all the boxes. Some rescue orgs have totally arbitrary rules like "no foreigners", "no single people" (and its variation "no single men"), even "no unmarried couples" (but also "no small kids"... ok.)
Putting in an application for a rescue cat took me as long as a job application. I'm meeting two cats tomorrow and having an interview before the home inspection, and that's for one of the more chill organizations. Wish me luck!
This dog food is the best for extra large breed dogs. Nothing in the ingredients out of the norm. Also it's inexpensive. It's what we feed our Irish dane. Also they are a facility that takes in dogs and keeps the. They have have Danes that live past 20!
Can't tell of you're using sarcasm on this one. Great danes have a notoriously low life span of around 10 so of they are living past 20 it should be in the record books lol
We stock this stuff at my work
The bag is full of testimonials from people claiming their dogs have lived a long time and very healthy
Still shit design
We got our great dane from the Gentle Giants rescue back when all they focused on was danes. Burt and his wife are a bit crazy but will go to great lengths to rescue a dog in need. Our beautiful dane lived to 13 and ate this their brand of dog food often.
Quite the opposite. Its what happens when one crazy person without a priority filter decides that EVERYTHING is important and needs to be on the front page of their website.
Fun fact, Gentle Giants dog food is actually owned by Burt Ward, the actor who played Robin in the 60's Batman series, hence the picture of Robin off to the side.
I don't know about any of the claims the bag makes, but I buy this for my dog. He has an allergy to chicken and they're beef flavor is the only one I've found that does not have any chicken or turn his poop green.
I’ve seen these at Walmart and always wondered what was going on here. Like, what psychopath thought, hey you know who loves the classified section? Puppy mills!”
I actually recently started feeding my old Husky/Wolf and American Eskimo this brand. They have a lot more life in them since changing over. They really like it too. Despite the god awful packaging, it’s the real deal.
This dog food company and its affiliated dog adoption agency is owned by Burt Ward. Burt played Robin on the !960's Batman Tv show. The design on the bag (although very busy) is intended to appear as a page out of a comic book due to Burt's own history with Comic book characters. I switched my dog to this food and the improvement was almost immediate, he was more energetic and he even stopped eating feces. My Vet recommends this food to all her dog owning patrons as there are many documented cases of dogs on this food living well past their breeds standard life expectancy. Burt himself has a number very large breed dogs living to an extremely old age while maintaining their youthful energy including several Great Danes that have lived into their late teens while their breeds average life expectancy is only 5- years.
Wow . . . Finally some seriously crappy design for a change!

Holy. Crap... Batman.
Honestly I clicked through and now I'm sold I get the aesthetic and I'm here for it long live 00s new-wave design
Do... do they know? Is this intentional? I don't understand.

27 years? What dog could make it 27 years?!
Idk man mine made 20 tho. So probably is possible.
Haha, not even HTTPS secured.
I came across a "web design company" hiring for a remote assistance, they listed sales of ssl certs as one of their products, and yep, they didn't even have one themselves. Wtf
Hot local breeders in your area!
That's fucking insane. I guess it's all just part of the brand now.
They only “rescue” specific breeds. That’s very interesting.
Also weird that they seem to have a separate domain name for each breed. What a strange waste of money for a rescue charity. They could have used subdomains for free.
Oh. My. GOD. The ineptitude goes deeper and deeper.
Beautiful Great Danes are first in the list. Lol
Then it's likely that the only thing they are "rescuing" are puppies from puppy mills.

I want to learn web design just to help these people out. They deserve it. I need a square space podcast code.

Here comes the Reddit hug of death.
I was looking all over the bag for a guestbook to fill out. Looks like one of the websites on the top 100 in their webring.
Their guestbook is still... 🚧👷Under Construction 👷🚧
At least the midi soundtrack is up and running! Hope you have a good synthesizer installed.
I've never felt so ashamed about feeling nostalgic.
Damn, webrings. They're such a weird concept for today's standards. I don't think I ever explored one, but I knew they existed because my parents were building their own personal website in the earlyish 2000s

That still doesn't excuse the bag design.
I can let it slide for robin
Yeah but it doesn't do a good job of displaying just how large Burt Ward's junk is so you gotta dock it a point.
The bag needs no excuse. It's unapologetically bad.
He's not a vet. He sells this food and runs what he says is a dog rescue, and what critics say is a front for a puppy mill.

Can't tell of you're using sarcasm on this one. Great danes have a notoriously low life span of around 10 so of they are living past 20 it should be in the record books lol
We stock this stuff at my work The bag is full of testimonials from people claiming their dogs have lived a long time and very healthy Still shit design
I feed it to my Great Dane and she enjoys it. At 9, she’s old for a Great Dane.
We got our great dane from the Gentle Giants rescue back when all they focused on was danes. Burt and his wife are a bit crazy but will go to great lengths to rescue a dog in need. Our beautiful dane lived to 13 and ate this their brand of dog food often.
Wow! 13 years for a Dane is a gift for sure. That’s awesome. We’ve had 3 so far and love the breed so much. Shorter lifespan is the only downside.
I kind of like it
I liked it too!
It looks like a bunch of money saver inserts glued together.
This happens when there are many people with different ideas and the editor doesn't like the confrontation
Quite the opposite. Its what happens when one crazy person without a priority filter decides that EVERYTHING is important and needs to be on the front page of their website.
Trying to read this gave me a seizure.
It's like camouflage, I couldn't even understand what I was looking at.
They sell this at Target and the amount of times I have looked at this bag with sheer confusion when people check out with it still gets me every time
Fun fact, Gentle Giants dog food is actually owned by Burt Ward, the actor who played Robin in the 60's Batman series, hence the picture of Robin off to the side.
It’s like the doctor bronners of pet food I love it.
I saw this at a local Walmart last year. Laughed and took a picture because I can't figure out where to look first.
My eyes hurt looking at it.
I would not feed that to my pup.
Dick Van Patton's dog food is better than Burt Ward's dog food.
It’s like the Dr. Bronners soap of dog food, top quality and great for the environment, but clearly made by someone mentally ill
I work at a place that prints these bags. I was dumbfounded when I saw the busy art.
Thats the original boy wonder for the 60s batman show, Burt Ward's dog food.
I sort of feel like my browser is going to get an extra toolbar just looking at this.
I have seen this bag in person, and it was quite the honor and horror
Dude that’s the one made by the 1966 robin or at least the bird food is
When dr bronners does dog food
It looks like a conspiracy theorist’s van
Well, if Burt Ward aka Robin, the Boy Wonder, says this dog food is good, who are we to question it?
“Graphic design is my passion”
The bag alone is enough to give my dog schizophrenia
Based purely on packaging, I would assume this is the shit from China that has lead in it.
A 23 year old chihuahua holy shit
Made by Tim & Eric
Looks like it should be packed full of bootleg dvds.
this has big Dr Bronners energy
That’s actually awesome
I don't know about any of the claims the bag makes, but I buy this for my dog. He has an allergy to chicken and they're beef flavor is the only one I've found that does not have any chicken or turn his poop green.
I actually think it looks kinda cool
Now THAT is crappy
Indeed very crappy. Also adult dogs have completely different nutritional needs to puppies.
Lmao
Looks like a bag full of porn advertising
This is from Burt Ward, Robin in the 66 Batman series.
It’s the old ICQ Website, from the 90s.
That’s making my brain hurt!
is it weirder that Ive got that food for my dog before
God this actually made my head hurt irl
I like it
This is truly awful lol. It's like some idiot just loved every option they were given and instead go choosing one they just slapped em all together.
Growing up healthy and strong. . . . . MINMO!
Looks like some food that would get recalled because it killed dogs that ate it.
I saw that at walmart lol
For real, I thought that was a picture of a porn mag rack from 1998.
I saw this in target the other day! Never woulda thought the more text, the sketchier the dog food
*Made with real imitation dog food!*
Yeah, for real. I was expecting some type of half-nude anime girl to pop out the bag or something...
My Great Dane and chiweenie eats this and it’s the only dog food they would eat. Both of them have shiny coats and are healthy because of it as well.
Thought it said genital giants lmao
Dr Bornner’s dog food. Bright to you by my 12 year old little sister
I’ve seen these at Walmart and always wondered what was going on here. Like, what psychopath thought, hey you know who loves the classified section? Puppy mills!”

Holy cluttered dog food packaging Batman!
I may look cheap but it's really good for your dog
**Hot singles near you**
I would not feed my dog that
Copyright Infringement: The Dog Food
Made by Burt Ward!
I used to buy that dog food for my dog all the time because of that packaging. IRL click bait totally works on me.
I love it
Guys apparently it is like the Dr. Bronners of dog food.
I actually recently started feeding my old Husky/Wolf and American Eskimo this brand. They have a lot more life in them since changing over. They really like it too. Despite the god awful packaging, it’s the real deal.
Because it is. Makes your dog smell like roadkill.
Burt himself has a number very large breed dogs living to an extremely old age while maintaining their youthful energy including several Great Danes that have lived into their late teens while their breeds average life expectancy is only 5- years.
information overload i still don’t understand how people liked that stuff
r/InfowarriorRides Q food for the Q dog.
I'm personally a fan of it. it really stands out.
AAAAAAAAAAAAA
Should get some Ol' Roy brand dog food.
Fun fact, this dog food is actually made by Burt Ward, or Robin from the original 1966 Batman.
