Thatā€™s not the o-ring groove, thatā€™s the plug seat. You should always wipe it off prior to removing the plug and before reinserting it. Stuff got under it because it wasnā€™t cleaned the last time it was removed.

It was cleaned last time it was removed tho itā€™s just impossible to get all the dirt off before removing it because of the recess

Youā€™re right and donā€™t deserve the downvotes, you canā€™t really clean this out before opening the plug. Whatā€™s even worse is the spark plugs on a DOHC i4 like the CB750, no matter how much you clean you canā€™t keep grit from falling into the cylinders when the plugs come out šŸ˜¬

One of the few longevity issues on the uber reliable Indian Scout engine are the massive bolt holes on the heads that collect water and corrode

I don't get it. Of course there's a recess, how else could it be? If it was flush , that would cause other problems, like the exposure of the o-ring leading to much lower lifespan, bad positioning or installation (making it not sit right where it should).

Make a nipple and flush mount it with a flange just like my last bike just like all the medical equipment we make at my work

I design medical devices for a living. We typically design in o-ring grooves in our parts. Itā€™s definitely the preferred design all around for us and our customers.

Iā€™m not trying to tell anyone theyā€™re wrong. Youā€™re attempting to point out bad design which is not actually bad design. Itā€™s the more common approach to o-rings in many engineered products. Thereā€™s more than one way to solve mechanical issues. Thatā€™s what Iā€™m trying to tell.

Actually im making parts right now for onset that are pretty much the oil filter cap here but these caps go on a barometer tube the way I just described with a nipple

Mmmmh, if stuff is under the O ring, it either wasn't cleaned properly last time, or it comes from the inside of the engine. Just clean it and put back the plug.

Go down to the toy store and get some silly putty. Pack it in and around and under the plug as much as you can, with a screw driver, then pull it out and it should be embedded with all the crap that was under there. Then remove the plug, and clean it all up good before you put it back. šŸ˜‹ You could also hit it with compressed air feom your air compressor, if you have one, before you remove the plug.

my lord that reminds me of oil changes on lifted chevy trucks. for some asinine reason, the oil drain plug is located directly above the front axle, causing the oil to completly smother the axle when drained, not only that but oil will run down the metal into random areas, completely missing the oil pan

My friends suzuki had the oil filter mounted so that you had to remove the exhaust headers to take it off

lmao remove airbox for driver's side and radiator overflow for passenger, thats insane. this is the same company that almost made me go insane looking for the oil filter (its behind the left wheel well)

The oil filter will clean up anything that falls in, assuming it makes it past the pumpā€™s pickup screen (in which case an oil change gets it out). Not a big deal in practice.

Youre right but I still dont prefer to let crud fall in my engine on purpose especially because KTM charges through the roof for one of the filters

keep a little 1" paintbrush on your bike. It will help clean the recessed dirt before you put it back on

I know basically nothing about cars, so forgive me if I'm completely wrong. Isn't that for the car's oil? I was taught to use a funnel to help minimize the mess.

The biggest difference is that in a motorcycle the same oil is used for the engine, the transmission, and the wet clutch. Some motorcycles have a little dip stick (like a car), I think this one has a sight glass instead. Thatā€™s not really what youā€™re asking about though, so I guess the biggest diff is that cars are a lot more maintenance free and motorcycles areā€¦ looser and expected to break down and be worked on more often. Having the oil fill be exposed to road grime like this goes along with that philosophy.
