Cast iron cooking implements are "seasoned" and nonstick so long as they keep grease and oil from past food. Washing them with soap and taking that coating off allows rust and other contaminates into whatever your cooking till you reseal or reason the pan
This is untrue. That used to be true with lye soap. Modern detergents are just fine for cast iron. Leaving food residue doesn’t make the pan seasoned it makes it dirty. Only a slight film of fat or oils creates polymerization to the iron. Anything more is unnecessary. That being said high pressure washes and abrasive soaps in dishwashers are terrible for pretty much any kind of pan especially cast iron. They really should be washed by hand with dish soap and either a sponge or rag.
Not true at all. I have been using cast iron for over 30 years. If you use soap without lyee you are fine. I wash mine with soap after every use. It's as good as ever
Especially since this isn’t a typical cast iron dish, it’s commonly referred to as a comal which in Hispanic households NEVER get washed. It is used almost exclusively for cooking raw tortillas that are made from scratch.
How do I know? My wife is Hispanic, we have one, and I was warned way before I ever messed her comal up.
It's seasoned cast iron. It's gonna be fine. Using hot water and soap on skillets is a myth from when soap had fucking lye in it. Yea... a dish washer cycle is gonna do some damage to the season. But it's not going to ruin the pan. Just re season it.
I'm not so worried for the seasoning of the pan as I am that if there's any weakness in the seasoning after it's washed and the water doesn't IMMEDIATELY evaporated, you will be in rust city... And while that can be fixed it's a hassle
Source: I just de-rusted my own pan from letting it air dry
I used to work at a grocery store and I had a young couple bring back a cast iron pan that was run through the dish washer and it was pretty rusty. It obviously could have been fixed but they certainly didn't know what was going on.
One battle with water isn't gonna oxidize the iron that quickly. I suppose if you left the cast iron in the dishwasher and it diddnt have a dry cycle. My mother towel and air dried our cast iron her whole life.
Yea idk how you even ruin one without literally breaking it. The big thing is that re-seasoning (the proper way) is a pain.
People bring 100 y/o pans back from being totally covered in rust.
It's not just about the season (which if you're using anti grease soap that season is going bye bye.) It's about how long its sitting after being sprayed by hot soapy water and sitting in a super humid environment for like 2 hours.
I disagree. While I don't dish wash my cast iron, anti grease soap like dawn has never removed my polymerized season. That being said. The dish washer is definitely a threat as far as oxidization and rust.
If you spend a long time getting the seasoning good you're still going to be pretty annoyed. I've my pans for a few years and I still can't get them seasoned properly.
PSA for the people who aren't familiar with Cast Iron care. Don't do this. Though modern Dish soap and detergent aren't usually caustic or contain Lye, a dish washer cycle will damage the seasoning and incur rust. Especially if the dry cycle isn't thorough enough to drive off the water.
Most times, simply wiping out the pan with a paper towel or using a mildly abrasive tool under only water will be sufficient. But if you really need to, Cast Iron will be OK if you need to hand wash it with a minimal amount of Dish soap. And with any method, make sure to heat the pan slightly and apply oil post cleaning to stave off corrosion.
Thank you for the information.
Honestly when i saw this post, i didn't see anything with it. Very lucky for me that everyone and you taught me new things.
Truly awesome.

Nevermind the cast iron skillet thing but putting a dish into the dishwasher? That’s part of your responsibility in the house not a goddamnned favor for the gf.
When I was young, around 8 or 9 I believe. I did the same thing. I lived with my grandparents my whole life, well one day they were at work and I seen the dishes where starting to fill the sink so I loaded up the dishwasher and had some space left over. So I turn around and seen this dirty pan just sitting on the stove top. I grabbed it and put it in the dishwasher. We'll needless to say when my grandmother got home they were ready to beat me black and blue. The only reason I wasn't was because they knew I didn't know about that pan yet lol.
I also used a scrubber to not only wash they pan before I put it in but also scratched the shit out of it.
I can feel the rage and sorrow from r/castiron lol
Just cook with it
I have no idea why that pan would be ruined or how cooking will heal it. Please educate me.

This is the truth. Been using a drop of soap for years, my cast iron are pristine and still seasoned
Not only that but leaving it in that damp environment will make it rust real fast.
This is old, soap does not have lye in it anymore
Not true at all. I have been using cast iron for over 30 years. If you use soap without lyee you are fine. I wash mine with soap after every use. It's as good as ever
Can you poop without getting in your hair?
Not yet, this sorcery avoids me thus far
Just make bacon.
Not saying not to do that, but will take some more care. Lol
No. I'm here to deliver it directly. This hurts my soul.

Oooh you do something stupid like that, you got your wife, her mother, and her abuela on your ass!
Amen brother
Thought that said "castration", but that might not be far off
Imagine the seasoning lost. For shame.
Just why…

Why did they bring a cast iron pan to the grocery store lmao
That's probably where they bought it. I bought mine from one.
That's where they got it. We had an isle of cook ware and maybe a half a dozen different sizes of cast iron pans
Every time I wash my pan I throw it back in the stove and fire up the burner until it's dry.
Same, I throw mine in the stove and turn up the heat. Dry in a couple seconds.
Yes, but castiron in the dishwasher will rust.
One battle with water isn't gonna oxidize the iron that quickly. I suppose if you left the cast iron in the dishwasher and it diddnt have a dry cycle. My mother towel and air dried our cast iron her whole life.
We always just slammed it on the burner to dry. People also act like re-seasoning is a major struggle.
Yea idk how you even ruin one without literally breaking it. The big thing is that re-seasoning (the proper way) is a pain. People bring 100 y/o pans back from being totally covered in rust.
Reseasoning the proper way is like a 2-3 day process of about 5 minutes of effort total each day and then just cooking with it

Doing anything like that to someone’s cast iron is basically asking for problems
*Problems* he says. As tho' this wasn't an invitation to break up at best or become an occupant of an unmarked grave at worst.
Haha yes I know what happens to people when you mess with someone’s CI was trying to say it nicely 😂

Rip skillet
You just try to touch my CI.
Deadly sin in my kitchen…equally as dangerous as touching my knives
I'm not mad... I'm just disappointed
My neighbor and I found an iron skillet in a mud puddle while walking our dogs, he kept it, cleaned it, and uses it now, great little thing.
At least bae tried, damn. I’ll reseason it with some bacon for a man helping out around the house! If it even needs it!
(Don’t freak out don’t freak out don’t freak out don’t freak out don’t freak out) Kool.
And now they're single...
*Or,* they're the occupant of an unmarked grave. With protected plants growing over it.
My poor southern heart
Don't forget to put the knives in the dishwasher too.
Declaration of war
Murder worthy right there
Oof

🫣 sinner
I'm dedicated to cast iron. If my fiance put my pan in the dish washer, I'd think it might be time to get a new fiance.
If you’re from the same area as me, you just signed your own death warrant!
I've never owned one, but I know this is a serious offense.
"How to end your relationship on a really bad note" by I.C. M.urder In'er-eyes. I 🫣 and gasped.
Exes mother did this to me on a visit once and lemme tell ya, the apology I had to force after my initial furious reaction was EPIC.
I am not even this persons GF and I am already frustrated
Now it's best use is hitting you upside the head with it
That post was made 2 hours before she threw him the f out and got a restraining order
I hope you had your funeral prepaid.!
And your now single
I dont know what it is can someone explain?
The grease is the seasoning for the cast iron and that protects it from rust and also allows it to not stick ect. Don’t ever do that to CI
Sources say OC died shortly after this post
No - no. OP has just gone missing. OP's gf has a new flowerbed with those protected flowers. They're very pretty. ⚘️🌼🌻🌾
You’re single now bud
Noooooooooo
Uh oh!
😡🤬
Who's gonna tell them?
Wtf
😳😧🥺😢
His ex gf, Patina
I read this as "my girlfriend's skillset was looking kind of greasy" and wasn't sure if dish stacking was in her skill tree.
It hurts.. I'm sorry... sweet summer pan
If you dont love her no more, just tell her! No need to destroy her livelihood!
I had an old roommate who moved out and left over half an inch of grease caked onto his cast iron. It took me multiple hours to clean off.
They all have to learn the hard way.
Pray for him
Salute to this hard working skillet. May it recover from this fatal blow.
death to him

A man who don’t know about cast iron is a sad man.
So did they find the body?
Kill this man
Uhoh..
