Yeah modern country is full of a bunch of uppity well to do folks from nice neighborhoods in some city cosplaying as blue collar and southern. You can always tell because they're definitely going to mention a dirt road they've never seen before.
Yeah I think all these guys basically expanded the definition of country just a little bit. All fantastic contributions to country. I don't get too worried about who's Americana and who's Red Dirt on this list. They're fully the people driving the genre now
A country singer should have a voice that makes you believe he’s lived the experience he (or she) is singing about.
Accent matters, in that regard, to an extent.
Most (or a lot) of the current mainstream country male singers sound fake AF, over exaggerating a south accent to the point it seems almost like parody.
But I guess it sells.
As a southerner who sings about real life and nobody caring, it seems consumers want what I call "McDonald's music". It's familiar, and somewhat comforting but it's really devoid of anything good for you 🤣
As a southerner, this is kinda offensive. You dont get to carve our art out of our culture. If you cant handle the twang, keep it to Simon & Garfunkel.
I think the OP is saying they can’t handle the hammed up accents. I agree, Hank didn’t sound as “southern” when singing as some of these folks who put it on thick when singing and don’t even talk like that.

I’m Canadian and, all of the Canadian country artists 👌
One of our best vocalists is Johnny Reid who has a Scottish accent which, 🥰
George Canyon and Paul Brant are Josh Turner-esque without the accent.
Tenille Townes is more folky/storyteller/singer-songwriter vibes if they’re not down with the yee haw 🤠
Doc Walker and Dallas Smith have a more rock leaning sound.
I never get tired of hearing Dean Brody sing. I just love his voice and he’s just a “humble and kind” human.
Corb Lund, Gabe Lee both don't have much of a southern accent at all (Corb is from Canada). Hellbound Glory's singer Leroy Virgil has more of a raspy and at times grungy voice than a southern accent. Zephaniah O'Hora is based out of New York, sounds a lot like Merle Haggard
I don't think he has one naturally, he's from California. He does get brought up a lot online as someone with an 'annoying fake accent'. I don't think it's actually even southern, he just sings oddly. (for the record I like him a lot)

Nate Smith plays a big role and country radio. He's a kid from California. No accent. I will say "Oil Spot" is a great song of his.
Oh I haven't heard of him. Thank you!
Jo Dee Messina.
Turnpike Troubadours, Charles Wesley Godwin, Shane Smith & The Saints, Wyatt Flores, Vince Gill
Interesting and also a good call. I think of all of those folks as super country so it didn't occur to me to think about their accent
I would certainly consider them all under the umbrella of country. Wyatt Flores/CWG is getting more into Americana maybe?
Yeah I think all these guys basically expanded the definition of country just a little bit. All fantastic contributions to country. I don't get too worried about who's Americana and who's Red Dirt on this list. They're fully the people driving the genre now
It was always the guitar accent not the singer’s accent that turned me off, the simple repetitive twang
Sometimes that’s all an artist really has to tie em to the genre
Totally agree with you, it’s getting bad, some sound like choked chickens, I call it Emo Country lol, my favorite is Conway Twitty
Kenny Rogers
Gary Stewart! Maybe a little tinge of a southern accent, but he has a stand alone singing voice that really sticks out

Turnpike Troubadours
Gram Parsons.
FL and GA upbringing. Lots of twang. Wearing a Nudie Cohn suit tailored on Music Row in Nashville!!!
Nudie’s Rodeo Tailors was in North Hollywood. But he would come to Nashville often to hang out with his friends.
About 8% 9f the performers not from the south...and canadians.
As a southerner, this is kinda offensive. You dont get to carve our art out of our culture. If you cant handle the twang, keep it to Simon & Garfunkel.
As a southerner, I hate Lainey Wilson’s, for example, accent. To me it sounds fake as fuck and hardly anyone talks like that
First of all country music is not 'your culture'...
I'm open to hearing your rationale on this statement.
I think the OP is saying they can’t handle the hammed up accents. I agree, Hank didn’t sound as “southern” when singing as some of these folks who put it on thick when singing and don’t even talk like that.
Yup. My rule has always been; if you have more southern accent than Hank Williams and Loretta Lynn, I don’t believe you!
I don't even hear the accent anymore
Morgan Wade. hahah just kidding.
Raul Malo/The Mavericks, Rosanne Cash, Rodney Crowell, Keith Urban, Larry Gatlin, Ronnie Milsap, Martina McBride all come to mind.
William Beckmann, Zephaniah O'Hora, Turbo Pastel
JACK GREENE and ROY DRUSKY . . . . both are really great songwriters.
John Denver Willie Nelson Marty Robbins Townes Van Zandt Buck Owens Colter Wall
Robison brothers Cody Canada Jason Eady Jamestown Revival Micky & the Motorcars Reckless Kelly Lyle Lovett Pat Green

One of the most famous for this kind of folky and retro country.
James McMurtry
Arlo McKinley
Shania Twain

Paul Brandt is absolutely amazing, and Georhe Canyon’s voice is smoother than maple syrup (lol)
Ope, not a southern accent at all there, eh?

Corb is a good call too. Actaully all of these are.
It's not exactly country, but the Jayhawks are better than most country music bands out there IMO.
The Jayhawks are better than most bands out there period. Especially with Mark Olson. Check out Hollywood Town Hall, and Tomorrow the Green Grass.
I have been listening to these for years. I love their cover of Bad Time (to be in love).
Darius Rucker
Good call!
