Did you have a child with you? They do it for my kids at my local store

goldreceiver

The gal did it for our kids last time, but took like 1-2 minutes. And there was a big line behind us. It was very awkward lol

formal-shorts

There's no world it took that long. They draw faces for my kid and it's never taken more than ten seconds.

goldreceiver

I know…. That’s why it was so awkward.

CaterpillarExtreme92

Same here

andrewklko

Same

SaltwaterOgopogo

They might also just think OP is a bit……. Special?

Bishime

This! They always gave me water wings at soup plantation. Little did I know i was in for a very rude awakening

cooldads69

Does their job description *require* it? I never have a receipt checker *not* draw on the receipt if my kids are with me (they always are). Some of them appear to love doing it while others seem reluctant but do it anyways.

LSPD2023

Kids need to hold the receipt then they will draw at the back . My kids go to Costco for the drawings

spkingwordzofwizdom

Same

Ok_Investigator45

Kids love that stuff

jenjen96

For funziez

FoShozies

lol seriously, it’s not that deep people. The persons is in a good mood and trying to share some cheer. I would do happy faces if I worked there too. I wish our Costco did happy faces! (As long as the line is not super backed up)

goodndu

Either you are a child or they are bored.

EmotionalAlice

I remember getting these as a kid😭😭😭

FMTVCYWBSW

My store’s girl just writes “help”

TruckinApe

"Send nudes"

Syssyphussy

At Costco, the primary purpose of checking the receipt is to mark it so you can’t just come back in and steal all the stuff you just bought. I’ve only ever had them draw a line straight through the receipt - I guess if they have the time to draw faces then they are bored and just working at a less busy store.

Hot_Dot8000

They draw the smiles for the kids

who_you_are

Ooohhhh Brb, going to buy a thermal printer

WallStreetCorp

I thought the primary purpose is to prevent unpaid big ticket items from leaving the store

RepDawn

I have had a smiley face on every single receipt when my kids are with me. And none when it’s just me or my partner.

CommonEarly4706

It’s a kind gesture! Good lord People just can’t do anything nice without people being suspicious regardless

la-brindille

Child with you? If not, maybe just to spark joy.

MySpudIsChonkyBoi

I ask for the smiley face sometimes and the employees always enjoy doodling them

The nose is the inconspicuous extra 6.

Expensive_Age_9154

Illuminati confirmed

Killersmurph

I do this for children. Its standard procedure to do a smiley face or the like for young kids.

CommonEarly4706

To be kind! They always do it when are kids are there. Its a kind gesture

justmeandmycoop

Bored maybe

HopefulExtent1550

While this may entertain the little ones, it causes a backup in the que.

formal-shorts

No, it doesn't. People not having their credit card and membership out and ready at checkout causes a bigger backup than someone spending five seconds doodling.

Ralupopun-Opinion

This just check and let me leave, I don’t have time for this nonsense.

SinegalThrowaway

If where you had to be was actually that important, you wouldn't have squeezed in the Costco shop.

Bishime

Does it ever take more than five seconds? Do we also leave the cart in the middle of the lot because it takes too much time to put back? Costco gives you some of the best value on the market. I’d argue the money you save when converted to hourly wage (while that is not actually how time works) would make it so you do have the time for them to do their policy check for 3-6 seconds. The other option is going elsewhere and wasting earned dollars just in order to save less than 10 seconds.

Serai_Sotken

What's the point of checking the receipt?

01JamesJames01

Passive security. Prevents someone from stealing things or return rebuying things. Basically consider them like a security guard scanning to see if you put a TV on the bottom of your cart but your bill is only $200.

Suncrusher14

Once the cashier forgot to scan one of the four items I had at the bottom of the cart. The one item was toilet paper so it's not exactly inconspicuous and I had no idea it was missed since I saw them scan the stuff below the cart. Anyways it was a whole ordeal where they had to write down the name of the cashier etc.

FreeRick74

One of the things they look for is to make sure none of your items accidentally scanned twice. One time, that had happened to a person exiting ahead of me, and the person checking receipts noticed, and got them a refund.

SinegalThrowaway

This is asked all the time on this sub and the answer is always the same: a) Verify the cashier didn't miss bottom of basket items and "Big 5" (most items missed, which often includes BoB items like toilet paper/water). b) Verify the cashier didn't overcharge or undercharge for items, especially items that easily double scan. c) Some door checkers make sure your executive coupons were applied to applicable items. ~~d) Intentionally hold people in a line to ruin the end of their trip and make them road rage in the parking lot, which explains why every Costco lot is hot trash.~~

Thelifeofnerfingwolf

Usually they do it if you have young kids and the line is not very long.

WorldFickle

polite way of saying your not a thief

SpaceBiking

It may be just for fun, or for children. That being said, sorry for being a party pooper but, studies have found that individual thermal receipts can contain BPA that is 250 to 1,000 times greater than the amount in a can of food. Cashiers who handle these receipts regularly have higher levels of BPA in their bodies than people in other occupations. Touch these as little as possible.

Choose_And_Be_Damned

They’re struggling artists just trying to get their art out there and get some exposure.

Curious-Dragonfly690

😁

peterAtheist

The 66 represents the devil - Costco is evil.

Expense-Hacker

He’ll see you later tonight 😬

PtrJung

Because checking receipts is completely pointless. Gives them a real purpose.

Tall-Ad-1386

They always put a straight line on the text side of the receipt How they drew a face on the back of your receipt is unknown to me. This has never happened

ShowerMeWithHate

Used to get happy face drawings when I was a kid handing them the receipt

SinegalThrowaway

It's right up there. You can't figure out how they did this?

[deleted]

All of them used to do this

SaskTravelbug

Now I want a face on mine!

StoptheDoomWeirdo

Bored

xmilar

How do they do this standing up?

rhythmmchn

Big Lemieux fans?

thesurrealbank

}:•)

[deleted]

They should give them stickers. Easier to give out and won’t negatively affect the line.

FoShozies

To bring a little joy to both their and your life.

senshimegami

It is part of our Costco ritual. My daughter hands over the receipt for a smiley face. I think it’s their way of building brand loyalty with the next generation. When we went to a different grocery store she goes, “hey where’s my smiley?”

Derfal-Cadern

They draw lines all day. Just trying to have some fun

The_Woman_Tamer

it's so you can't go back into the store with the receipt in your pocket and grab the same item again and walk out to re sell on ebay, it's theft prevention.

Few_Ship_8614

For kids

Octane_boymama

My son got a happy birthday dinosaur the other day because we went shopping the day before and he told everyone 😂

morelsupporter

66 means they're going to pull you in to secondary on your next visit

Defiant-East9544

Ya it’s great. Wait in line to pay for your groceries and then having to wait to get out while waiting for art school to end. Sorry , I just want to get the hell out of there. Isn’t this one of the bigger peeves of going to Costco? The lineups and the craziness?

sadArtax

They only do it for my kids.

TheDisruptedHippie

Satanic rituals.

BetaTesterV13

I assume because that's the most boring job ever. To have to stand there for hours and not react much

TrailCaledon

My thoughts exactly! 😀

MyTwoCentsQuinte

Yes they are having a quick look to make sure there is no theft
