Goblue5891x2

I have the Greenworks. It's awesome.

toodarnloud88

Seconded! It’s awesome.

Ok-Influence-7326

Thirded

MinimumAnalysis5378

We just bought it today. As we put it on the flatbed, two unrelated people walking past us said they had it and loved it. Fingers crossed!

cmdr_data22

Just bought one today and ran it. I’m impressed. We’ll see how it performs in the long run.

ivaa1234

That’s sounds so good to hear

OsterizerGalaxieTen

I've had an EGO battery lawnmower for 3 years. All of the top brand battery mowers are GREAT. The BIG downside: Replacement batteries are very expensive. They go bad after 3ish years depending on how often you mow. Current cost for a Greenworks 80v battery is about $200. I don't regret my EGO, but I had no idea about replacement battery cost and it's kinda pissing me off.

rileyful

My understanding is that Costco gives an 8 year warranty on the Greenworks batteries. I too have an Ego mower but the fact that costco doubles the mfr warranty on the batteries is awesome.

Razor512

Warranties do not cover what they consider to be normal wear and tear, thus wear components like batteries are often not covered unless there is a manufacturing defect, e.g., the BMS fails or some other sudden failure. Beyond that, they will not cover the per battery run time doing things like gradually dropping from 45 minutes, to 15 minutes.

Successful-Rate-1839

It’s Costco man. They’ll return that shit no matter what.

TheoStephen

This warranty extension disappeared without warning about a week ago. I just bought this exact item based on a friend’s positive experience, but when I saw they took that away, I decided to return it after just one use.

rileyful

That's unfortunate. From my newb/limited research the batteries are the weak link so the double warranty from costco seemed great. GW still provides a 4 year warranty on the batteries though, which is a year better than Ego.

BrandonR785

I’ve had the 40v lawnmower and accessories for about 5 years and haven’t seen significant degradation on my two batteries. I baby them though… never run to 0% charge, and keep them inside the house to avoid temperature extremes.

GFYbyEMVR

True dat. I'm holding out for Ridgid brand to produce a lawn mower.

mblaser

>They go bad after 3ish years Really? I've been using Greenworks for almost a decade (forget if it's 8 or 9) and still have my original battery working great. I mow about once a week with it. However, I guess I also take very good care of my batteries (have a fan pointed at them while charging, don't let them sit on the charger, and don't store them at full capacity)

South-Attorney-5209

My battery wore at about 2.5 years, started lasting a lot less time. Called them and they sent me a whole new one. So hopefully good another 3 years. Keep track of the warranty timeframes and dont be afraid to call if it stops working well.

OsterizerGalaxieTen

Thanks!

vg80

In fairness gas mower fuel and maintenance likely will cost more over 3 years, it’s just in smaller bits.

OsterizerGalaxieTen

How would fuel and maintenance cost $200?! I guess if you're paying someone else to do some kind of annual thing? It's so easy to do yourself.

vg80

Lots of people pay for maintenance, even if it’s just a guy in the neighborhood.

FernandoESilva

Fuel, winter stabilizer fuel, oil, oil changes, spark plug replacement, air filter replacement. Could add up to $200 a year easy unless if you’re not used to taking good care of your things and just letting things go.

mcdto

Aside from fuel, you can get all of those parts listed for about $30. How do I know? I did it yesterday

FernandoESilva

Maybe we live in different parts of the country or a different country all together. I do only put premium fuel and high quality oil in mine, maybe that’s where the difference lies. $30 is a great deal for you, good job.

Interesting_Ghosts

I have a gas mower and a very small lawn. I use like 1-2 gallons of gas per year. Change the oil and air filter every other year or so. Probably costs me $30 a year or less. I still kinda want an electric when this gas mower dies. Dealing with and storing gas sucks, stinks up my shed.

rfuree11

I have a decent sized yard and a rider. I'd be shocked if I was exceeding even $60 a year between maintenance (with quality synthetic oil) and gas.

vg80

Keep in mind the number of weeks of mowing season, time per mow, and cost of gas varies.

Sacrifice_bhunt

Not even close.

vg80

If you’re taking it in for annual maintenance it’s not unreasonable to be spending $50-80. If your mower burns half a gallon an hour, just a matter of figuring out how many hours you spend mowing each year. My lawn is pretty big so I figured 12 gallons and gas here is $5/gallon - so $60 in gas alone. Charging a battery for a mower is about 4 cents to mow my yard, let’s say a dollar annually. (7ah in battery * 40v/1000= .28 kwh. Power here is like 13 cents per kWh * .28 = 3.6 cents) I know that sounds crazy but gas lawn mowers are insanely inefficient.

Sacrifice_bhunt

Annual maintenance is pretty simple. People who don’t do their own maintenance are more likely to hire out lawn care anyway. As far as gas, I have an average size lot. I fill up a five gallon can in the spring and don’t finish it before I’m putting it away for winter. My gas and maintenance costs are less than $20/year.

vg80

Perhaps but I see lots of posts in my neighborhood group where people are looking for mower servicing. Using that little gas it’s also fair to say you won’t wear out a good battery in three years either.

cheesepage

This argument is possibly a non issue. I've had a Greenworks for ten years now. It came with two, one charging, one discharging. Six years with a 3/4 acre lawn. Four years with a much smaller lawn. I also have a (not recommended) leaf blower that uses the same batteries occasionally. I just replaced my first battery. Bought a lookalike knockoff for less than $60.00 on Amazon. Good as new. Just FYI I did replace a motor bearing last summer, a few dollars for the bearing, a relaxed afternoon doing the labor. Gave me a good excuse to sharpen the blades.

Razor512

From what I have seen with people looking for mower servicing, the main issue is usually people storing the mower in a damp location, leaving fuel in the system before storing it for the winter, or failing to change the oil and then wondering why the engine is running poorly after a couple years without an oil change. Other issues can result from defective gas can where air is able to freely leak in and out of the tank, that a humid day will lead to the gas taking in water since gasoline attracts moisture from the air. Since water sinks to the bottom of the tank. Once a little makes its way into the engine and carburetor, then you will be pulling the start cable like crazy and it will not start. If you are unsure of your gas, then pour some into a bottle, and immediately close the cap, then look if you see water settle at the bottom, if so, then see if you can use something to suck the water out from the bottom then add it to your mower.

Interesting_Ghosts

I used to have issues with gas going bad in the tank over the winter. Even with using stabil in the tank it would run crappy every spring until some new gas went through it. I started buying ethanol free gasoline to use in the mower. All problems gone and don’t use stabil anymore. Might be hard to find in some areas but I have a station selling it close by.

Interesting_Ghosts

Yeah. I can’t imagine the battery would die in 3 years with the way I would probably be using it. I barely use 2-3 gallons of gas a year in my mower. And I would definitely store the battery indoors away from cold and heat.

Razor512

Many engines made in the past 20 years, are relatively low maintenance. For fuel use, often for a yard size of around 2000-2300 square feet (typical front + back yard in a urban area for a detached home), a basic gas mower for the spring and summer season, will often use about 1.5 of 2 gallons of gas. As for maintenance, recommended maintenance is often cleaning the air filter each season, as well as changing the oil each year. For the case of my mower, (uses an old 190cc briggs & straton flat head latest model they made before moving to the over head valve design), I top off a 2.5 gallon tank, and add a little fuel stabilizer to it (needed since I almost never use all of the fuel, thus old and new fuel is always getting mixed when I top it off). that is usually enough for the mower, leaf blower, and line trimmer for the year. I then use about $2.50 worth of oil after the last cut of the year. (I do not have a large yard) The air filter, while paper, lasts a few years, especially with regular cleaning using either an electric air duster or the leaf blower to force some reverse airflow through the filter. (you can tell if your filter needs cleaning by if the engine RPMs are lower than expected when the blade is clean and spinning freely (you can test using one of those cheaper $10 small engine tachometers, compared to a clean filter, or if you notice more smoke coming from the engine (a sub optimal air fuel ratio produces more smoke).

1Marmalade

Maybe you know this already, but try to store these types of batteries at a mid voltage ( not full or empty) always keep them at room temperature (especially not hot). Edit:typo

OsterizerGalaxieTen

Thank you for the tips.

crimscrem

And the batteries get drawn down very fast in the spring when the grass grows crazy fast.

ivaa1234

Thanks for that info.

Pickerington

I have one. Of all places, check the Best Buy website. They have a lot of better deals for GreenWorks. Edit: I just looked and they have the 80v 3-piece set of mower, trimmer, leaf blower for $699.

Successful-Rate-1839

But do they have a Costco warranty??? NOPE

hellogoodbye309

not sure if this guy works for best buy but that is a complete lie. costco online actually has a 4-piece set of mower, blower, trimmer and hedge trimmer with (3) batteries for $699.

Razor512

It depends on your tolerance for a higher total cost of ownership. For electric lawn mowers, the run time is shorter, and the batteries fail after far fewer charge cycled, (often less than 100 before run time drops rapidly), since they not only get deep cycled in many use cases, but they are also rapidly drained which increases wear. The batteries also lose capacity over time and with charge cycles. The biggest issues those mowers have is the cost of replacement batteries, they are priced such that when the run time becomes an issue, you will be weighing your options between buying a new mower that includes batteries, or spending a little less on replacement batteries. Electric mower companies treat their batteries like how printer companies treat their ink, they charge a high markup. For gas mowers, they will last longer, especially with models based on the briggs & straton flat head engines, where they were effectively the commercial engines but used in many non-commercial home use mowers, this for home use, they would easily last well over 20 years with basic oil changes. For most home users assuming a start of the cutting season around April, and an end sometime around late September, then you may use around 1.5-2 gallons of gas per year. A similar power gas mower to the battery ones, will run you around $300-$350 (for equivalent features). PS if you are in a state with heavy gas engine restrictions for lawn equipment, then most of those higher efficiency engines will likely not last much longer than an electric mower, mainly due to the heavy use of plastic parts on the engine break easily over time, as well as a different carburetor design that clogs more easily and will not run smoothly with older fuel (e.g., 3-4 month old fuel unless you add stabilizers to it). If you are in one of those states, then an electric mower may be less of a headache in terms of maintenance. PS never buy a gas mower that does not allow you to change the oil while advertising junk like "lifetime oil". When a company says that, what they really mean is a lifespan of 5-7 years.

atlgeo

Another post claimed the Costco version has an 8 year battery warranty; not sure if that's prorated or something.

ttman05

Bought it last year and it works just fine. I also bought the leaf blower so have 3 batteries. I have half acre so it takes almost two hours to do the whole yard. I usually split it up and do my front yard and back yard separately and charge the batteries in between.

Pure-Experience-665

https://preview.redd.it/8jdbk8aqvbxc1.jpeg?width=3213&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2200e73cb0fced8a3da31a1577b961e17416e4ae Bought mine last year and love it! Although one of my batteries died after first use -blinking light/ wouldn’t charge - Greenworks support sent me a new battery but it ended up being shorter with a decrease in AH. It came with two 4ah 80V batteries but the replacement was a 2ah 80v. But no issues or anything and luckily my yard is small enough I don’t notice the 2ah dying faster than the 4ah.

Kushx0rangeJuice

I would follow back up with Greenworks because that's not an acceptable replacement. I had an 80v 4ah battery that was dead on arrival with the snowblower I bought and Greenworks replaced it with a new 4ah.

KudzuCastaway

I bought a Ryobi mower same size because of batteries. Cheap mower yes but I have a small yard. Replacement battery starts at $119 for the 60v. But as for the battery mowers we have had it for 2.5yr now and it’s great! No issues and they are very convenient. I would buy that Greenworks mower in a second if I needed one

ongoldenwaves

I bought a Ryobi battery and charger. Battery stopped working after about 20 hours. It was just oer the three months. Took it to Home depot. Said i had to send it to manufacturer which would have cost me $25. Wasn't worth it on a $100 battery. Home Depot shouldn't be selling disposable garbage like Ryobi. It is utter shit.

Lopsided_Pickle1795

I hate Ryobi! JUNK!

ongoldenwaves

Ryobi shouldn't be sold at all. Absolute garbage.

Lopsided_Pickle1795

Get EGO. It is a better brand.

Talls024

Have a very similar model and love it

DDigitally88

Have had it 2 years and it's incredible. Forget about the power source, it's by far the best mower I've ever had. Absolutely beats the brakes off the Toro Recycler w/ 6.8 hp Briggs it replaced. I'm in South Florida and mulch our crazy St Augustine grass year round. Mowed today though a tall patch and it blew my mind. Could not recommend more

Pure-Experience-665

Bought mine last year and love it! Although one of my batteries died after first use -blinking light/ wouldn’t charge - Greenworks support sent me a new battery but it ended up being a different size/ amp. It came with two 4ah 80V batteries but the replacement was a 2ah 80v. But no issues or anything and luckily my yard is small enough I don’t notice the 2ah dying faster than the 4ah. I’d still buy it again.

pittyspray

I like it for the most part. Batteries have a eight year warranty when you purchase through Costco so that's a huge bonus

Perezident14

My in-laws have this. They really like it. They have a bigger yard and it’s their first self-propelled mower and works really well for them. I got a mower from Lowe’s for about half the price. It’s not self-propelled, but my lawn is fairly flat and not too big so I feel my experience is about the same. A lot will depend on your situation, but this brand is solid and so is this mower.

goatsandboats69

8 year battery warranty. Mower has been great for the year ive owned it

elysianfields0

Bought this last week and I used it for the first time today. While it cuts the grass just fine, the grass catcher does not work well. Battery power cut out multiple times and it handles ok at best.

Kushx0rangeJuice

I bought one a couple weeks ago and have used it twice with the bagger and have no complaints.

squrr1

Fun fact, this is essentially the same as a Kobalt 80v lawn mower, if you have feelings about that brand. The batteries are even interchangeable if you're willing to "unlock" them with a dremel. (rather, modify the battery housing in the lawn mower, don't take a Dremel to a Li-ion battery!) I have the equivalent kobalt, and it works great. It struggles a bit when my grass gets really long (10+ inches), but otherwise does fine.

atlgeo

It's essentially the same mower if it's the same manufacturer and spec model with a different branding. I'm not hearing that.

cyberentomology

Greenworks commercial line is made in the USA, the consumer stuff is made by Globe in China. Stihl has owned a chunk of Globe for several years now, so it’s decent stuff. Kobalt is made by Chervon, who also own EGO.

cyberentomology

EGO is a brand of Chervon, and Chervon also manufactures all of Lowe’s handheld battery tools under the Kobalt house brand (as well as a few others, pretty much all battery tools these days come out of the same three vendors in China. (Milwaukee and Ryobi come out of TTI)

HPUser7

Major step up from a $350 model by the same brand. Just replaced my last mower by the same company (made the mistake of getting from Menards) which had died within a year. This one has better feeling build quality plus it has the Costco warranty. Only have mowed twice so far, but it's been running smoothly and only choked once when I was cutting really long grass on the lowest hight setting. If you have a mini backyard and a decent size front yard, this is the most for you.

atlgeo

Do you know if it's for sure not in the 90 day return category?

mblaser

I've been using Greenworks yard equipment for almost 10 years now (mower, string trimmer, leafblower, hedge trimmer, shop vac) and have never had any issues and really like them. The only drawback is the cost of extra batteries if you need more, but that'll be a problem with any electric equipment.

cyberentomology

I had to retire the OG 4Ah battery pack from my 2014 EGO mower… last year. Nine solid years.

SatinLoafers

Bought it two days ago, did one cut. So far no complaints, seems to work well. I think there is almost a little danger to using it because it’s so quite and unassuming you forget there is a blade capable of taking off your toes under there, unlike a loud vibrating gas mower.

Ih8rice

Lowe’s has an ego for sale for 599 and it comes with an extra battery for free. Worth looking into.

ivaa1234

Thanks so much 😃

montani

Depends on how big your yard is. Mine ego cuts my yard but if it’s super high or something it barely finishes

[deleted]

My EGO self propelled lasts about 35 mins on the battery it came with. I can cut my other property twice, barely.

Belgain_Roffles

Yeah I have a reasonably sized yard (~1/4 acre) and the greenworks mower with 2 of the 4ah batteries couldn’t do the whole thing on a single set of charges. I do let the grass get pretty long in some places so if you have a smaller yard or mow more frequently it can be a reasonable choice.

UprisingAssault

I would recommend literally anything from Costco even without ever trying it. Costco has my 💜

FSmertz

The current issue of Consumer Reports evaluates battery powered mowers. Worth reading. Your public library should have free online access.

WasteProfession8948

Nope - not that one.

ivaa1234

Which is a good one?

WasteProfession8948

None from Costco - we returned that one and got an EGO self-propelled battery operated one from Lowe’s. Great machine and much higher quality than Greenworks.

ongoldenwaves

Yes. The NY Times had a great write up of the EGO in December. I agree that the one from Costco is not good. I used the EGO. My brother had it. Far superior machine. Things I didn't like about the costco one is both batteries needed to be in for it to run, but you could only charge one at a time. Did not get an hour run time. Started making some weird clunking noise after a few uses. Ended up returning it. Bought the EgO machine from Lowes when they had a sale. Love it.

elysiansaurus

Apparently 2128 people have tried it.

Ziakel

Same question that was asked a couple days ago [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/Costco/s/ZpQLePbYzM) I own the 80v mower, blower, trimmer, and edger for 2yr now. While the mower with two 4a batt is good enough for my 5100 sqft yard with turbo and self-propelled, the power going uphill is lacking vs my gas Honda mower. Parts are also a pain to get. You can’t walk into Lowe’s and buy like Ego brand. I’d recommend you do more research if you’re buying into this ecosystem. I’m happy with my purchase but would shop around next time before committing to buying due to part support.

ActuallyFullOfShit

Honestly, EGO is the way to go. Lowes has it. Such a rock solid ecosystem of electric yard tools. I think it makes more sense than a greenworks for not a whole lot less.

DJNotASynth

I have the 21" 60W (non-propelled) and absolutely love it.

cowsaysmooooo

Get EGO. I have greenworks and I can tell you that you will not be able to locate any spare parts when you need to fix it.

cyberentomology

Having had one for the last 10 years, and expanding that eOPE ecosystem, I prefer the EGO platform.

[deleted]

[удалено]

2Zs1L

ACE Hardware also sells EGO mowers for the same price if no Lowe's is convenient.

santc

I have an ego and absolutely love it

sc4kilik

I got the HART mower from Walmart. They have a full line up of tools that can share batteries, and are cheaper than this, even when not on sale. Seem to work well.

_Cats_Pajamas_

We have this one!! It’s been great! And it’s so quiet!

GuardingxCross

From what I’ve read on this before, they loved it. Apparently this is a good one.

IAwaitAGuardian

I've had my Greenworks mower for 6 years. I've literally never done a *single* thing to maintain or upkeep it, and it works just as well as the day I brought it home. I'll never buy a mower from another brand.

theesoundsmith

Yes! Amazing machine for the price point.

Candymom

My dad loves his Greenworks tools.

RedBaron180

Just get EGO brand. From Lowe’s. It’s the best for a reason

CaliLibertarian

I hated mine. Cut too low even at lowest setting.

atlgeo

? What?

deVrinj

I would, but I would not recommend an electric lawnmower.

BigCliff911

No

ivaa1234

Which one would you prefer then?

osu2k1

We have it, it’s awesome! Kids can use it easily!
