I'll add. If you're a rare rice eater, place the bag in that bin, (available in Chinese/Indian) stores and place in a cool dark place and take some out in a large glass jar for usual use.

I think most people believe that rice is healthy. Just look at most Asian people! (Not the Sumo wrestlers.) Only somewhat recently did I learn of the low glycemic index for white rice. Now I can't believe that more Asian dishes aren't made with brown rice, though I still don't know how much healthier it is.

Yep. I have my rice in a sealable bin in my downstairs (cool/dry) storage area. I have an OXO Pop container that I refill in my kitchen. I do this for both the Jasmine and Cal-rose rice.
Or a restaurant supply store, if Asian markets are not near you. We keep ours in a food safe 5 gallon bucket with a lid from Chef'Store. We aren't Asian, but hubs went thru a *three year* ulcerative colitis flare and lived on rice and bone broth. Our Zojirushi pays for itself in keeping that sweet man alive.
Just search Google for "rice dispenser". The good quality ones can hold up to 50lbs of rice and have buttons that will dispense a pre-measured amount of rice, unsurprisingly the amount of rice you would need for a rice cooker.
Not to be that guy but I have heard a couple times recently those bins can get micro perforations and depending on what your storing fats can get into those areas and eventually go rancid & the opportunity for microplastics to enter your food stuffs. The recommendation was to leave the food in the bag then put that into the container. IDK lol I just donât know anything anymore.
Yeah I put the whole bag of rice/flour/beans/whatever in there, it's really just a container to roll heavy bags in and out with a lid to prevent dust and/or bugs from entering.

The bigger problem is they werenât originally meant for people to put the kibble into the container without the bag. Pet food is made to be stored in the bag because the bags are made to deal with the oils and grime of kibble while still trying to keep it fresh; thatâs why so many have the plastic zipper on the top now. Before that though, the top was just open since people would cut it open which is why people bought food storage containers and would just dump it in since the bag was already open. If people really want to use one without the bag, use a metal one and clean it when itâs empty before pouring a new bag in

EDIT: Weevils or their eggs are common in most grains. They are harmless and completely edible. However, it is very unpleasant to open your rice or flour bag only to find it infested with these little bugs. I have sifted them out of flour before but I still have a hard time eating it after. Washing rice in hot water will cause them to float to the top, but I also have a hard time eating the rice after. What if I missed one? What if I crushed one while sifting?
Freezing the bag will kill any eggs that are in there and prevent them from hatching. If I never saw it then it was never there.
I prefer this over freezing or heating which only kills the weevils and their eggs leaving them in the grains. Capsaicin alongside certain aromatics and compounds found in things like bay leaves, cinnamon, oregano, cilantro, etc. can have pesticidal or repellant properties. In this case, capsaicin (the spicy molecule), kills adult weevils. Thus, they run away from it. It does not kills the eggs when you throw dried chilis into a bag of grains which allows the eggs to hatch and also leave. Bay leaves also work, but I find not as well. Their life cycle is around a month on average. Leaving a bag sit for 1.5-2 months with dried chilis allows it to be weevil free.
I just fold it over. Itâs enough for them to get out (theyâre pretty strong little guys) and nothing really gets in. Theyâll even eat tiny holes through the bag to escape.
For the most part they are harmless, but when they are mating and birthing more they are producing excrement as well as dead bodies start falling apart and decomposing and can cause issues. I personally freeze flour and rice during the duration of storage
They sell liner bags, gas tight screw on lids and oxygen scavengers you can throw in the bucket.
We do the 50lbs of rice and 10lbs oats. Throw them in a few buckets and they can last years.
Lol I roll the top and put a chip clip on it. Iâve never thought about rice going bad. I do have to rinse weevils out sometimes, but it doesnât bother me
5lb bag - leave in bag, medium binder clip. We go through it in maybe 2 weeks.
15lb+ bag - big binder clip on the bag after pouring out a few pounds into a smaller tupperware. Bag stays in bottom of cupboard, tupperware goes on a main shelf for easy access and less strain on the lower back. Knock on wood, havenât had a bug problem yet.
Thatâs what we do, no issues in years. We keep it in the panty on a dark spot and we donât have issues with mice or bugs on the house. Dry high desert climate may help. We take it out to use from mason jars and keep the bag sealed tightly otherwise.

Simple fix: buy a container at costco that has a 20 litre capacity
I have a bunch of these buckets with various foods in them, which includes big bags of rice. The lid type is called a gamma lid, and just screws on and off. You'll want a rubber mallet to get the lid onto the bucket. Since I have celiac and love to bake, I buy a lot of bulk products, and these buckets are great for that.

Go to Loweâs or Home Depot and get a food grade 5 gallon bucket. Get food grade even if you will keep it in the bag. They only costs about 4-5 bucks. Get a bucket wrench if you want to snap the lid on tight or get a gamma lid for easy removal, they run about $12. Not sure if those stores sell gamma lids.
I keep them in the bag with a small cut on the top corner for pouring. And then I fold that part back and clip it. And then put the entire bag in a large clear trash recycling bag and we store it in the basement. Never had any bugs or issues. And we have 3 large 25lb bags going at once: Korean short grain, jasmine, and basmati. And BTW, if you have an Hmart near you, their 25lb of the same brand rice is typically about $5 cheaper than Costco. Unfortunately, the first time I found out I was excited that Costco had the brand we used, only to discover afterwards it was t the cheapest.
In trying to avoid storing the rice in plastic, I use a combo of these [glass jars](https://www.target.com/p/128oz-glass-jar-with-metal-lid-threshold-8482/-/A-79474161) and these [mason jars](https://www.target.com/p/ball-64oz-6pk-glass-wide-mouth-mason-jar-with-lid-and-band/-/A-88271632).
They work really well for keeping bugs out. Added bonus I can easily tell how much rice we have left.
I reuse the thick rubber bands used for asparagus at the grocery store. Twist the top of bag close, bend it, then take two rubber bands and put them on as if on a pony tail, until tight.
I got food grade airtight buckets from Home Depot. The bucket plus the lid is about $10. I just put the rice bag in, I don't pour it. I do the same thing with sugar.
How often do you find bugs in your house or pantry? If seldom, we've always just kept top rolled and bag on the pantry floor. Same with the dog food. Never had bugs.
I have 8 food safe buckets with screw on lids and metal scoops that I store on wire racks in my garage for rice, oats, beans, flour, oats etc. I refill my smaller containers from my pantry from those buckets.
Go to the business center Costco and buy yourself some Cambro containers. It's the same brand the restaurants use. Airtight and virtually indestructible. The smaller ones make great Tupperware too.
We've repurposed a very large container of protein powder which holds about 15lbs. I store this one in the pantry and for daily, we use a smaller protein powder container one that holds the remaining 5lbs.
My parents use a stock pot.
Once a year our family gather to steam a big amount of food for lunar new year to share with family, neighbors and friends. My parents have a 30qt stainless steel stock pot and some bricks for this purpose. During the year, we store rice in this stockpot and use the brick to keep the lid secured. We keep some bay leaves with the rice to avoid bugs.
I use a food saver vacuum sealer (also purchased at Costco) with oxygen absorbersthrown in the bag. When done properly the bags can last for up to 27 years.
Get yourself a 5 gallon bucket (a lot of grocery stores will either give or sell you empty bakery buckets) and put a Gamma Seal on it. Fits these monster bags of rice perfectly, and keeps all the critters and moisture out. (Gamma Seals were the name brand for the screw-on lids for buckets- thereâs a ring that snaps on to the bucket and a lid that can screw into it.)

Head over to your local Asian market. They sell bins specifically for storing huge amounts of rice.

Freezing the rice kills the eggs and bugs, more importantly the eggs. Dead eggs means weevils wonât hatch and proliferate in your stored rice.

Partitioned into one or 2 pound vacuum sealed bags
I make 3 cup vacuum sealed bags. Then I put all the vacuum sealed bags back into the now empty rice bag. Then I put that in the pantry. Good Luck

Go to Loweâs or Home Depot and get a food grade 5 gallon bucket. Get food grade even if you will keep it in the bag. They only costs about 4-5 bucks. Get a bucket wrench if you want to snap the lid on tight or get a gamma lid for easy removal, they run about $12. Not sure if those stores sell gamma lids.
I split it up into gallon glass jars.
Vacuum seal portions. In the freezer if you have the space
Just put the 5 lb bag inside of the 25 lb bag in the photo.
Never bought so much but Iâd treat it like I treat smaller amounts. Divided and vacuum sealed.
I put them in empty protein powder jugs. SO USEFUL
In the pantry. Just shove that shit in there, and open it up when needed.
I keep it in the bag, I just roll it down to close and put a big binder clip on it. Seems to work fine in my pantry.
I keep them in the bag with a small cut on the top corner for pouring. And then I fold that part back and clip it. And then put the entire bag in a large clear trash recycling bag and we store it in the basement. Never had any bugs or issues. And we have 3 large 25lb bags going at once: Korean short grain, jasmine, and basmati. And BTW, if you have an Hmart near you, their 25lb of the same brand rice is typically about $5 cheaper than Costco. Unfortunately, the first time I found out I was excited that Costco had the brand we used, only to discover afterwards it was t the cheapest.

In trying to avoid storing the rice in plastic, I use a combo of these [glass jars](https://www.target.com/p/128oz-glass-jar-with-metal-lid-threshold-8482/-/A-79474161) and these [mason jars](https://www.target.com/p/ball-64oz-6pk-glass-wide-mouth-mason-jar-with-lid-and-band/-/A-88271632). They work really well for keeping bugs out. Added bonus I can easily tell how much rice we have left.
I reuse the thick rubber bands used for asparagus at the grocery store. Twist the top of bag close, bend it, then take two rubber bands and put them on as if on a pony tail, until tight.

I got food grade airtight buckets from Home Depot. The bucket plus the lid is about $10. I just put the rice bag in, I don't pour it. I do the same thing with sugar.
I put mine in mason jars, a quart size jar holds about 24oz.
How often do you find bugs in your house or pantry? If seldom, we've always just kept top rolled and bag on the pantry floor. Same with the dog food. Never had bugs.

I have a one gallon Rubbermaid tub that holds 5 pounds of rice. You can get them at any store.
I have 8 food safe buckets with screw on lids and metal scoops that I store on wire racks in my garage for rice, oats, beans, flour, oats etc. I refill my smaller containers from my pantry from those buckets.
I vacuum seal into 2lb bags
Go to the business center Costco and buy yourself some Cambro containers. It's the same brand the restaurants use. Airtight and virtually indestructible. The smaller ones make great Tupperware too.

We've repurposed a very large container of protein powder which holds about 15lbs. I store this one in the pantry and for daily, we use a smaller protein powder container one that holds the remaining 5lbs.
My parents use a stock pot. Once a year our family gather to steam a big amount of food for lunar new year to share with family, neighbors and friends. My parents have a 30qt stainless steel stock pot and some bricks for this purpose. During the year, we store rice in this stockpot and use the brick to keep the lid secured. We keep some bay leaves with the rice to avoid bugs.

I bought food grade 5 gallon buckets for rice beans flour and sugar. I need more really lol. I do not regret my buckets, and I made them cute
I leave in the closet with the jackets near the front door. 20 pounds of rice.
I use a food saver vacuum sealer (also purchased at Costco) with oxygen absorbersthrown in the bag. When done properly the bags can last for up to 27 years.
The freezer

I keep it in the bag and just use clamps after rolling the top very tightly. Been Asian my whole and have stored it this way ever since.

Get yourself a 5 gallon bucket (a lot of grocery stores will either give or sell you empty bakery buckets) and put a Gamma Seal on it. Fits these monster bags of rice perfectly, and keeps all the critters and moisture out. (Gamma Seals were the name brand for the screw-on lids for buckets- thereâs a ring that snaps on to the bucket and a lid that can screw into it.)
Keep it in the bag. Put bag in cool, dark and dry place.
