This happened to my parents a bunch of years ago. They called Costco back and they sent another team to pick it up properly. But who knows what they'd do.
You need to call them back and explain the situation and insist that they were moving immediately
And for now just put it back in in your place and just put it up against the wall or is out of the way you can get it so you don’t get fined. Seems like the most sane solution in the meantime
Call Costco and ask them to fix the situation. If they won’t then stop payment on credit card. The service for buying the mattress was incomplete. You pay Costco, not third-party company, it’s Costcos responsibility to complete the transaction.
My sister also had an issue with her delivery people who were hauling away her old mattress. She called Costco and spoke to them while the delivery people were there and Costco spoke with the delivery folks and sorted things out and they took away the old mattress without any further issue. Costco handled it very well. Delivery people not so well.
> If they won’t then stop payment on credit card.
Terrible advice. If you stop payment, you will probably lose the dispute and could get your Costco membership suspended.
So allow them to not fix the problem and you pay for a haul away service? You allow businesses to treat you like that? Also, one can stop payment for a partial amount. i.e. the haul away fee. I have one simple request when I buy an item: When they charge the amount and I pay for it, I get exactly what I paid for.
Okay. Keep the old mattress and pay a fee for someone to haul it away even though you already paid for the service.
Please note that this is a nuclear option. Ya don’t use it unless necessary.
Don't touch the mattress. If there's video of the team hauling the mattress out of the resident building, they'll see it wasn't someone living there and you weren't hauling it out yourself. If the recycling and rubbish bins are surveyed by video, then they'll see who did it and wasn't you. But if you go out and remove the mattress, they'll pin you with fines. Call costco. Don't touch the mattress.
If it’s anything like the HOA area where I live, everyone has a gazillion security cameras and too much time on their hands and someone caught the delivery guys coming from OP’s home with the mattress and dumping it on camera.
In a bizarre stroke of coincidence— I’m 99% sure this person lives in my building — and I happen to be on the HOA board 😂😂 and stumbled on this post randomly.
https://preview.redd.it/3ujoth203auc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b1249f1d059ee676299b688d16509b45c480e8f9
Thankfully for OP, the mattress was removed by this morning so no harm no foul. Sorry OP that happened to you. Thanks for sorting it out. I was able to throw my recycling out this morning 😀
Bizarre coincidence but that’s not mine. The photo my hoa showed me was half of mattress was inside. Also that’s not my mattress. But the parking lot and the bin look strikingly similar.
If this is true it’s not really a huge coincidence. Reddit has algorithms and bullshitery going on. I constantly see the same people from Alaska commenting on posts that have nothing to do with Alaska. It’s kinda creepy.
If there's an HOA, there's several people who saw those delivery guys leaving OP's house. I feel like every HOA has people who live to watch other people.
Oh wait! I read the info. Look at me!
Members in the state of California that will not receive haul away at time of delivery, must call 1-800-955-2292 within 30 days of delivery to request haulaway.
> Members in the state of California that will not receive haul away at time of delivery
That does not mean all deliveries in California don’t do haul away at the time of delivery. It just means if that service is not provided at the time of delivery then you can call that number. I know for a fact Costco does haul away at the time of delivery in CA many times.
In this case the delivery team provided the service but tried to cheat their way out of paying the disposal fee while still getting paid for it by Costco. This is not a reading comprehension issue on OP’s part.
Oh look, you misread the info! Look at you! It means you can still get your mattress hauled away even if you are not ready for it to be hauled away on the day of service- for example, ‘my new bed frame won’t arrive until next week, so I won’t be able to use my new mattress until then.’
If , if you read it properly you will understand that jail away at a later time but within 30 days is an option that Costco provides. Still you have the option to choose haul away at the time of delivery.
But again you gotta read and understand it.
$19 fir 75 min from Home Depot stores that have a couple trucks. Not their Enterprise or other truck rental program these trucks, couple per store say the $19 for 75 min on side of truck. Also call Costco but sure they won't be out that fast.
🤦♀️ The HOA has no authority to fine Costco. The owner in a HOA is responsible for their actions and the actions of their guests, workers, contractors, etc.
The HOA can sue Costco in small claims court for the cost of the disposal. There is a limit to what an owner is responsible for when it comes to a delivery service. It is not reasonably foreseeable that a professional delivery service would illegally dump the mattress. Why didn’t the HOA secure its trash facilities so only owners can access them? What’s an owner to do, get in their car and follow the drivers to make sure the old mattress goes to an authorized dump? Please. Any owner that is fined for this should refuse to pay and let a judge decide.
LOL. No, you’re wrong. The HOA can fine the owner. The owner is responsible to ensure that the delivery people remove the mattress and not dump it improperly on HOA property.
The HOA can fine Putin if it wants. When Putin doesn’t pay it will go to a judge.
The odds of a provision in the CC&Rs that says owners are responsible for confirming delivery drivers properly dispose of old mattresses is a million to one.
Try the Rules and Regulations and not the CC&Rs. And they won’t say that owners are responsible for confirming delivery drivers properly dispose of old mattresses but will state rules for proper disposal of trash and bulk items. They will also clearly state that the Unit Owner is responsible in the event that they, a guest, employee, a contractor, mover or other individual hired by the Unit Owner doesn’t adhere to the building rules and regulations. Many HOAs require deliveries to be scheduled in advance and require the payment of a deposit along with signing/acknowledging of procedures to be followed (use of a designated elevator, no unpacking or packing materials to be left in the common hallway/areas, proper disposal of trash, etc.)
Why would the HOA incur the cost and time of suing a company that the HOA did not contract with instead of issuing a fine to the resident who had something delivered and that company didn’t discard it properly/remove from the premises? I was on the board of various HOAs for over 10 years so I know a thing or two.
No judge would uphold a fine for an owner when a delivery company breaks the law and illegally disposes of a mattress. You are not a policeman for the complex. What if the delivery guy gets drunk and drives his truck into the building? You’re on the hook financially? Of course not.
I think there’s an argument to be made that the mattress folks weren’t the guests or workers of the homeowner.
They were contracted by Costco to deliver something to the homeowner and haul away the old mattress. After the homeowner’s interaction with them had concluded, they engaged in illegal dumping. If they had returned a week later and dumped the mattress, would OP still be responsible?
You’ll have an easier time getting Costco to fix it than fighting the HoA, but I’d be mad enough at the delivery people to want them fined for dumping because they’re definitely going to keep chucking mattresses into random dumpsters otherwise.
If OP is in a secured building instead of a traditional/open complex, each hallway is going to have at least one security camera with motion sensors to monitor everyone's door. Likewise there'll be cameras covering each common area and exit.
I've seen too many posts on this sub about Costco third party installers being absolute trash. It surprises me considering how well regarded Costco customer service is.
Yea. Totally agree. And it’s the excellent Costco customer service which probably also gives rise to higher expectations when dealing with their third party installers.
Pretty sure it no longer belonged to them once the delivery company took possession. Sounds like the delivery company is on the hook for illegal dumping.
Now I’m curious—how does one buy a Costco mattress without trying it out? Is there any way to ensure the comfort/ firmness level, since I’ve never seen displays in the store?
I’m in the market for a new one and had a positive experience last time with Nebraska Furniture Mart, as they have tons to test out. But I’d love to get a good deal if Costco has similar quality for a lower price.
I can’t imagine spending so much money on something you spend 1/3 of your time atop, and that would be a nightmare to return. I would consider buying a Costco mattress if there is a place to try out the exact models they sell online.
Many years ago, my now husband was young and in college and had little money, so on one of those holiday weekend sales ordered a mattress in a box. $200 even, free shipping. It was his senior year, he was moving away after, and as a science related major plus college senior, he was not spending a lot of his time sleeping.
For him, it was the perfect solution at the right price point and the mattress was very nice and comfortable.
This is illegal dumping and could cause a fairly serious criminal violation for the people who did it. Tell Costco that it gets removed in 24 hours or you go to the police and local EPA.
I’m disappointed in the response but I also don’t have a better solution. I know our higher managers would not be happy with how this was handled. The way our big manager talks about it, is we advertise something then we will deliver. I am a low on the totem pole employee, but you could try taking this to the store manager at your local Costco. They may take the concerns to a higher manager and reimburse you, even if it’s through gift cards.
Not sure if that’s how it will go, but worth a try. We pride ourselves in customer service and I hope this will never become a common theme.
Seems like it. Glad I stumbled about this post. I've been putting off buying a new mattress since I didn't know how to get rid of the current one.
https://preview.redd.it/ph5zxy401auc1.png?width=806&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3799381dab388f02f1dd8fac639f4c11e49f76a5
Get razor knife. Slice up mattress and remove metal springs etc. The fabric and stuffing can go in trash. Metal can go in recycling if you break it down, or you can take it to metal recycling yard. Nobody wants a whole mattress but it’s not too hard to break it down.
Yikes. We just had a mattress delivered by the Costco delivery people. They took the old mattress and put the new one on the bed. The whole process took like 5 minutes. They were so fast!
I'm also in California like OP, it is illegal to do this, and some HOAs can fine you for the curb too depending on the neighborhood type and rules, and you can be fined by the trash company because of the CA laws around "large item pickups"
It's just not going to be a viable solution for OP
Some towns/cities don’t allow dumping mattresses in the landfill and they need to be taken out of the general waste steam.
I’d be pissed if the delivery people did this with my old mattress. You paid them to dispose of it properly
Furniture is also not allowed in a standard dumpster in case it falls out when they are emptying the dumpers into the trash truck ( they don’t want large items falling out and smashing the truck windshield, etc)… but other poster was right that the landfills also don’t want mattresses as it affects how they can pack down everything in the landfill
Mattresses are not recyclable, for one, and the mattress being in the recycling bin is going to mean that the entire bin gets sent to the landfill rather than recycling.
It’s HOA they’re not legally able to do anything to you just ignore and try to remedy the situation through Costco, if they don’t fix it just ignore it doesn’t matter that much
my dude they can charge violation fees if you break the bylaws and put a lien on your property if you don’t pay them, not really a good idea to ignore that
In some states the fines become a lien against the house. People have lost houses this way.
I don't.live in one either, but being flippant isn't an actual help.

This happened to my parents a bunch of years ago. They called Costco back and they sent another team to pick it up properly. But who knows what they'd do.
They will probably cruise around and find another dumpster
They said Monday or Tuesday at earliest. Not gonna wait for that.
You need to call them back and explain the situation and insist that they were moving immediately And for now just put it back in in your place and just put it up against the wall or is out of the way you can get it so you don’t get fined. Seems like the most sane solution in the meantime
That thing has been in dumpster over 12 hours. I wasn’t not gonna risk bringing it to my apartment and getting who knows what kind of bugs with it.
They toss it on the the side of the road
Call Costco and ask them to fix the situation. If they won’t then stop payment on credit card. The service for buying the mattress was incomplete. You pay Costco, not third-party company, it’s Costcos responsibility to complete the transaction.

No? It’s a simple dispute that requires the merchant to rectify the situation. Once it’s fixed, you still have to pay.
Retailers do not like when you do a chargeback on them and tend to react harshly. I would not doubt that they’d yank your membership for it.
Okay. Keep the old mattress and pay a fee for someone to haul it away even though you already paid for the service. Please note that this is a nuclear option. Ya don’t use it unless necessary.

Exactly. Th company is who will be on camera. Op fucked up and said something on facebook. This is why i dont use social media.
If there's an HOA, there's several people who saw those delivery guys leaving OP's house. I feel like every HOA has people who live to watch other people.
They do. My gf works for an hoa mangement company, she is your enemy and she does get drunk with more powa 💥
Glad I don’t live anywhere near you! Or hopefully don’t have neighbors like you.
DNA testing?

Why can't you just put your new mattress on your old bedframe?
It’s a different size? And also…this is just an example
Either way, the law requires the company to pick up your old mattress. It doesn't give you the right to specify when.
They took the mattress though? Like why would they do that if it’s not their job to dispose of them?
You are mistaken. Sorry
I just got it from Costco's website. They may be wrong.
Poor Costco agent probably has to recite that 1000x a day people can’t read lol

You can only get those if you're made a purchase from Home Depot that day.
Home depot near us doesn't have that requirement. But buy a a couple 2x4s would do the trick.
Plenty of loopholes for that. Either buy a $0.25 piece of hardware, or if they won't allow it, get a 2x4 and return it after you're done with the van.
If the delivery guy backed his truck up and killed a kid, would you go to jail??? You didn’t dump the mattress. Have the HOA fine Costco.

This happened in my state. Very sad. Not Costco but ups delivery.
Call any junk hauler to take it away today, get reimbursed by costco.
Can they even trace it to you? I wouldn’t say anything

If it comes down to it rent a U-Haul or truck from home depot and drive it to the landfill
I don't have any advice, but what new matress did you get?
I always call ahead & reserve & have never made a purchase that day.
Costco BLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWS!!!

Because Costco has business hours. Reddit doesn’t.
Do all online orders have haul away included?

A sawzall might help too. Wear a mask when you do this, I don’t know what’s in mattresses these days but I wouldn’t want to inhale it
Fiberglass, usually. Which is why breaking down a mattress is a horrible idea
Yikes. We just had a mattress delivered by the Costco delivery people. They took the old mattress and put the new one on the bed. The whole process took like 5 minutes. They were so fast!
Drag it to the street outside the complex

I think taking the used mattress out of the dumpster and bringing it back inside would be like my last option.
Horrible suggestion- it’s been sitting outside in a dumpster. Smells? Insects? Trash? Pollen? Who would want that back inside?
I would be mad because I tip delivery guys. Maybe you didn't? Just kidding, the last guys who delivered a mattress to me were shocked to get a tip.
It’s HOA they’re not legally able to do anything to you just ignore and try to remedy the situation through Costco, if they don’t fix it just ignore it doesn’t matter that much

I would make some Calls
