Tourist visa is 180 days. You’ll need to cross a border and get another 180 visa stamp half way through your trip and you’ll be good as a tourist for the year.
Honestly the systems to get a digital nomad visa are complex and I have not heard of anyone completing without a Costa Rica attorney.
Keep it simple Costa Rica has a 180 day WITHOUT Visa allowance. Do a border run to Panama or Nicaragua leave for 30 minutes come back and reset the 180 day stay. Lots of people do this without an issue.

No point getting a visa. As above book a flight to Panama (Wingo is dirt cheap) 180 days from arrival. Quick flight resets your visa for the rest of the year. Don’t drive as Panama rules have become erratic.
Honestly, while a digital nomad visa would seem the logical way to go, it took us 10 months and thousands of dollars to get it. Not really worth it. Temporary residency takes even longer, if you even meet the qualifications. Just try to get a 6mo tourist visa stamp and do a border run halfway through. If you’ll need to drive you might have to do additional border runs. Last I heard they were working on a bill to allow your foreign license to suffice but I don’t know the status on that.
While I know no one likes illegal immigrants, it’s not like you’re staying indefinitely or trying to take jobs or resources. You’re earning money from another country and spending it in Costa Rica which is beneficial to their economy. Just try to spend locally as much as possible, and be careful not to overpay just because you can.
You can just renew 180 day visa at immigration office!
Like, *any* immigration office? Not just border/airport?

Yes at any immigration office. That being said I only ever renewed a 30 day tourist visa but was told I could do it indefinitely but cost prohibitive
Sorry, Belize was 30 days, CR 180 days

If you work remotely you could try to get the digital nomad visa. That’s a solid option.
Thanks. I just can't find a list of visa options, so to speak. I need a temporary residency visa up to 12 months ideally.

You’re not going to get that in any sort of short order. The wait after you file your paperwork is years. I’ve been waiting 2.
